Abstract:This paper studies the evolution of occupation-industry employment structure of China.The industry employment structure is studied within the Casells-Singelmann's classification of six sectors,and the factor which influences the structure change is decomposed into three parts: the industry shift effect,the occupation shift effect and the interaction effect,using the structure change model.The model expands one dimension to dual dimension view that includes occupation and industry at the same time.We find that the industry employment structure is a dominant effect,but the occupation structure change is deeply influencing the employment structure change,and its importance is increasingly presenting in the recent years.

Abstract:Transformation from agricultural society to industrial society is the only road to a modernized country.Reasonable social stratification in the country is helpful to the transformation.With overseas professional stratification standard as a reference,based on profession population statistics in the country,peasants in transformation period can be divided into eight social strata according to the degree to which they possess economic power and social capital.At the present early stage of stratification,every stratum is not completely off the country;the strata boundary is not clarified;the professional stratification and region stratification are not in balance;the strata disparity intensifies.The analysis on characteristics of country stratification can help the Party in power research and integrate effectively the country strata structure.
Concealed Tendency of Social Reproduction:An Empirical Study on Attainment of Occupational Status

Abstract:Under the system of redistribution,national policies and institutional arrangement acts directly on the process of social stratification. To some extent,this means reproduction of class structure. The question is,with the introduction of market mechanism,has this reproductive character been limited? Empirical study on attainment of occupational status shows that so-called "achieved factors"have strengthened impact on the process of people's attainment of occupational status,whereas factors of family background affect people's attainment of occupational status through the achieved factors. Conclusions from empirical study remind us of the concealed tendency of reproduction of social class structure.

Abstract:In recent years, Chinese college graduates have faced a challenging employment situation, calling for an analysis of the social stratification function of higher education. This paper used linear regression to analyze factors influencing the occupational status attainment of college graduates. The social stratification function of higher education was found to be significant. Educational factors were essential for occupational status attainment. Nevertheless, new graduates’ occupational status could also be affected by individual and family factors. On the whole, college graduates achieved stratum promotion. Men had higher occupational status and longer mobility distance than women, and rural graduates had higher occupational status and longer mobility distance than urban graduates.
Stratification or Polarization: a Qualitative Study of the Formation of Status-Based Subgroups in China

Abstract:Researchers continue to debate about how high-status and low-status members will divide into subgroups. The purpose of this research is to enrich the faultline, subgroup, and status literature by specifying how and why status-based subgroups (i.e., subgroups based on status positions) are formed within a team. This research employed a grounded theory approach and conducted interviews with 111 individuals distributed over 21 work teams in Chinese highly competitive industries. The results identify two typical formation patterns of the status-based subgroup: vertical stratification that indicates team members vertically split into different subgroups along status hierarchies, and horizontal polarization that indicates team members at the same status horizontally divided into different subgroups. Furthermore, the results distinguish different sources for the formation of stratified and polarized status-based subgroups. This study expands faultline and subgroup literature by identifying multiple formation patterns and sources of status-based subgroup, and contributes to status literature by clarifying how high-status and low-status members will bound together or split within a work team. Economic Consequences of Horizontal Stratification in Postsecondary Education: Evidence from Urban China

Abstract:Drawing on nationwide representative data, we study the patterns of horizontal stratification of higher education in contemporary urban Chinese society, examining how college major, location, and ranking affect college graduates' occupational income and the likelihood of assuming a managerial position. The results suggest that (1) college major differentiates graduates' occupational income, with STEM and professional majors having significant economic advantages. (2) College ranking is significantly correlated with the likelihood of assuming a managerial position, implying that college ranking is an effective signal of prestige to employers in urban China. (3) A "Big City Effect" is detected as college location is significantly associated with salary levels after controlling for job location. This study adds an Eastern case to the literature on education stratification. Theoretical implications of empirical findings are also discussed.
Social Stratification and Political Attitude: The Effects of Social Transformation since Reform

Abstract:With the social transformation in the past 30 years of reforming and opening up, the structure of China’s social class has been reshaped; some scholars argued that social class has been formed by itself in China, and even the formation of political class was undergoing simultaneously. As the important aspect of social class formation, political attitude stratification in the reform era is researched in this paper, through multiple correspondence analysis using four surveys from 1990 to 2003. Results indicate that some features of political attitude stratification have emerged since 1990 and there is a strong correspondence relationship between social class and political attitude. Meanwhile, stable relationship exists between the class identity and social class while the attitude to economic reform weakens its relation with social class, the attitude to political reform strengthenes its social class base. We also found the explanatory power of income has a decline trend. However, both occupation and education factors show a stronger power to interpret the political attitude stratification.

Abstract:<span>By innovatively applying positioning theory with reference to a framework of willingness, capability and power, this study explored how pre-service teachers' professional identities dynamically change through the negotiation of various positions. A qualitative approach was adopted using data from six Hong Kong pre-service teachers in a teacher education programme for teaching Chinese as a second language. Multiple data sources, including interviews, reflective journals, classroom observations and lesson plans, were collected over one year. Pre-service teachers were found to negotiate individual deliberated self-positionings before entering the education programme and forced self-positionings from significant others during the education programme in three key stages: pre-positioning, negotiated positioning and performed positioning. Three differentiated positioning trajectories were identified that were greatly influenced by the pre-service teachers' levels of willingness, capability and power.</span>

Chinese Occupational Prestige - A Comparative Analysis

Abstract:Prestige ratings of 46 occupations from a 1988 sample of adult residents in Tianjin, a large industrial city of China, are reported and analyzed in this paper. Tianjin's prestige ratings are similar in overall pattern to rating scales from Beijing, Taiwan and the US and to Treiman's Standard International Occupational Prestige. However, certain occupations received significantly different ratings from Tianjin's raters than from those in these other studies. Both intra- and interstudy consistencies and variations in occupational ratings are examined. In addition to such conventional variables as education and income, the author suggests two macro-social factors to explain interstudy variations in ratings of certain occupations in Tianjin, Beijing and Taiwan.

Abstract:China's class structure is changing dramatically in the wake of post-1978 market-oriented economic reforms. The creation of a mixed "market-socialist" economy has eroded the institutional bases of a cadre-dominated social hierarchy and created conditions for a new pattern of social stratification. Although conditions remain dynamic, results of a 1998 urban survey that measured strength and diversity of social ties among 400 households in four of China's largest cities documented networks of social exchange among 13 occupation-based classes that identify a class structure distinct from the cadre-dominated social hierarchy of the Mao era. In particular, analysis of visiting during the Lunar New Year celebration suggests an urban society simultaneously divided along two axes: one by economic success in the more privatized economy and one by distinctions in political authority at the workplace. Thus contrary to those who privilege market transactions as the primary engine for creating a new class hierarchy, we conclude that to understand processes of social stratification one needs theories and methods that work simultaneously with multiple dynamics of class differentiation rather than presuming linear hierarchy.

Abstract:We extended the analytical frame from two aspects by adding self-employment as a new level of occupational stratumsand distinguishing the effects of reconstruction of social ties into gaining occupational stratum and income,when we analyzed the traditional issue of the relationships among social ties,occupational stratum and income.Then,all the theoretical hypothesizes were tested by using the empirical data.At last,we gave an explanation to the results drawn from data analysis by organizingqualitative materialsand the political implication was discussed as well.
Social Stratification and Mobility of Urban Residents in Shanghai

Abstract:There are two controversial viewpoints about the type of the social class structure of urban residents in Shanghai: "pyramid" or "olive".Moreover,the social mobility between different classes is overlooked in recent studies.According to the three dimensions of public power,property rights and market ability,this paper sorts Shanghai urban residents into six social strata.Using data from Shanghai Citizens Life Condition Survey,the author finds that current Shanghai residents' social stratification structure is far less an olive type but a typical pyramid type.The analysis based upon different time mobility tables shows that,over time,the father's social status has stronger correlation with the son's status.Meanwhile it appears certain boundaries among those strata,so that unskilled workers and agricultural laborers are more difficult to across the boundary and realize upward mobility.These trends may bring about certain risks to the modernization of Shanghai residents' social structure.

Abstract:This paper is a fundamental research on stratification system/schema.In the existing literature,power or authority is a rarely used variable in the empirical research of stratification,and researchers seldom describe the structural features of social power due to the lack of consistent measurement method of testing hypothesis on power distribution.Given the deficiency of empirical studies on social stratification,we construct an authority stratum system based on the direct measurement of work situation and organizational authority under the principle of power-domination relationship.The authors reveal the nature of the power-domination relationship among different social positions through analyzing the proxy variables of this stratum system.Finally,the paper tests the construction validity of the authority-based stratum system from four dimensions:socioeconomic status,employment conditions,subjective identity of strata status,and life style.

Abstract:Under the redistributive regime, work units and place of birth were the two structural barriers against occupational mobility, maximizing resource differentials among work units and localities while minimizing socioeconomic differences between occupations. The 2003 Chinese General Social Survey demonstrates that these structural effects continued but were reduced by market-oriented reforms with the rise of the non-suate sector. The results show that income returns to occupational status are significantly higher in the non-state sector than in the state sector, both strengthening the status meaning of occupation and increasing the socioeconomic inequalities among individuals and families. To what extent do people view the increased socioeconomic inequalities as legitimate? How equal or unequal are opportunities for socioeconomic mobility? These are the important sociological questions implicit in the present research.
Understanding the Mechanism of Social Stratification in Contemporary China

Abstract:This study develops a “power generation theory" to explain the mechanism of social stratification in contemporary China. The author argues that in the process of marketization and reform of decentralization and profit-sharing, public power generates “rent-seeking ability" while it exerts as redistributive power. Rent-seeking ability plays a role in social stratification in a different way that redistributive power has been taking, and power elite incumbents are able to use rent-seeking ability to gain private interests. Meanwhile, marketability also has an effect on social stratification in so far as the market mechanism counts. Thus, the basic institutional arrangement of socialist market economy determines that redistributive power, rent-seeking ability, and marketability co-constitute the dynamic basis of social stratification. The hypotheses about income inequality based on the proposed theory are well supported by a sampling survey data collected in Wuhan in 2003. The research findings suggest that the “power generation theory" offers a better explanation than the previously dominant “power transition theory" and “power persistence theory" for the phenomena of elite circulation/reproduction in Contemporary China.

Abstract:This essay reviews post-1980 research on class stratification, socioeconomic inequalities, and social mobility in the People's Republic of China. Chinese class stratification has transformed from a rigid status hierarchy under Mao to an open, evolving class system in the post-Mao period. Socioeconomic inequalities have also been altered. State redistributive inequalities are giving way to patterns increasingly generated by how individuals and groups succeed in a growing market-oriented economy; rigorous empirical studies have been conducted on occupational prestige, income distribution, housing and consumption, and gender inequality. Finally, occupational mobility, a rare opportunity under Mao, is becoming a living experience for many Chinese in light of emerging labor markets. Scholarly works on status attainment, career mobility, and employment processes show both stability and change in the once politicized social mobility regime. There is relatively richer research output on urban than on rural China, despite the greater and more profound transformations that occurred in rural China.
Rationalization, Market Transition and Differences in Job Opportunities——A Diachronic Analysis of the Occupational Attainment of Chinese Urban Residents Over Time (1949-2003)

Abstract:In modern society, occupational attainment is of great significance for the individual’s acquisition of social status. Previous studies of the occupational attainment of Chinese urban residents were more concerned with the impact of institutional transition on factors influencing occupational attainment during the post-1978 reform; their analysis of the impact of pre-reform changes in social structure upon occupational attainment and institutional transition over time is clearly inadequate. It is therefore necessary to conduct a diachronic analysis of the occupational attainment of Chinese urban residents since 1949 from the perspective of structural change and institutional transition. The results show that in the middle and late periods of the Cultural Revolution, father’s work unit status already exerted a significant impact on children’s access to employment. Since market transition started, female employment has been more subject to the pressure of market competition than male employment. These findings not only provide empirical evidence for the theory that structural change can induce institutional innovation but also provide factual grounds for a better grasp of women’s disadvantage in employment and for the formulation of policies for social intervention designed to diminish discrimination against women in employment.
Institutional Segregation and Structural Discrimination:Occupational Status of Young Migrants in Beijing

Abstract:Occupational prestige is one of the most important indicators of individual socioeconomic status.As the capital city and political,economic,social and cultural center of China,Beijing holds more high-status occupations than any other places in China,and therefore has been attractive for young migrants who aim to pursue a better career.Based on multiple waves of census and mini-census data,this paper examines the changing trend and determinants of occupational status of young migrants in Beijing over the years 1982 ~ 2005.Analytical results suggest that the occupational status of all people has improved over time,but local residents have experienced a fast pace of enhancement than migrants.While a lower status is a shared phenomenon by young people,regardless of locations and types of hukou,young rural-urban migrants have the lowest occupational status,suggesting triple disadvantages as rural-ers,outsiders and youth.Clearly,regardless of time period,the relative socioeconomic status reflected by occupation has never changed in the reform-era China due to institutional segregation.
