Social Stratification and Political Attitude: The Effects of Social Transformation since Reform

Abstract:With the social transformation in the past 30 years of reforming and opening up, the structure of China’s social class has been reshaped; some scholars argued that social class has been formed by itself in China, and even the formation of political class was undergoing simultaneously. As the important aspect of social class formation, political attitude stratification in the reform era is researched in this paper, through multiple correspondence analysis using four surveys from 1990 to 2003. Results indicate that some features of political attitude stratification have emerged since 1990 and there is a strong correspondence relationship between social class and political attitude. Meanwhile, stable relationship exists between the class identity and social class while the attitude to economic reform weakens its relation with social class, the attitude to political reform strengthenes its social class base. We also found the explanatory power of income has a decline trend. However, both occupation and education factors show a stronger power to interpret the political attitude stratification.
