Abstract:A computer code for evaporator design was created based on the methodology described in the Part I of the paper. By using the code, a brazed aluminum evaporator with flat tubes and louver fins was designed for purpose of replacing a wavy finned tube evaporator coil used in the transport refrigeration application. Based on the design, a prototype brazed aluminum evaporator was manufactured, then tested in a calorimeter facility at various operating conditions. Comparison of the calculation with the experiment showed that the computer code predicted the evaporator heat transfer rate within 8% for no-frosting case but under predicted the heat transfer rate by 17-24% for the case that frost formed on the evaporator surface. The reason for the under prediction was the blockage of the air flow passage by the frost.To investigate the effects of evaporator configuration and operating condition on evaporator performance, a series of calculations were performed using the computer code. The calculation results show that, as the vapor quality is increased, the refrigerant side heat transfer coefficient first increases, after reaching a peak value at a vapor quality at which dry-out occurs, turns to decrease. The average refrigerant side heat transfer coefficient is sensitive to the dry-out vapor quality. However, the total heat transfer rate is insensitive to the dry-out vapor quality because the air-side thermal resistance dominates. The total heat transfer rate and refrigerant pressure drop depend on ratio of the number of tubes in the first and second passes. A critical ratio is observed at which the maximum heat transfer rate and minimum refrigerant pressure drop occur. As the air inlet humidity increases, the latent and total heat transfer rates increase but the sensible heat transfer rate decreases.
