Abstract:R134a will be phased out soon due to its high GWP. Replacing R134a with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and non- or slightly flammable fluids in the systems in stock should maintain the same level of system performance. This study focuses on the drop-in alternatives for R134a regarding a Mobile Air-Conditioning system. A simulation model coupled with a microchannel heat exchanger model is developed and validated for calculating the system Coefficient of Performance (COP) and capacity of the Mobile Air-Conditioning system. A comprehensive method is developed to evaluate the alternative candidates combining the performance simulation and the flammability estimated of mixtures. The evaluation includes the system performance, environmental impact, and flammability of alternative mixtures. 15 pairs of binary mixtures from six pure fluids (R134a, R1234yf, R1234ze(E), R32, R227ea, and R152a) with 99 compositions are evaluated as R134a drop-in replacements, and the results are discussed. There is no perfect mixture found that is nonflammable, has low GWP, and has higher system efficiency and capacity than R134a in this study. Using R152a as a drop-in replacement of R134a can increase the system efficiency and capacity, but R152a is flammable. By adding R134a or R227ea to R152a can reduce the flammability of the mixture. R152a/R134a, R152a/R1234yf, and R32/R152a have higher COP and capacity than R134a, but they are not safe or environmental friendly enough. The mixtures for replacing R134a as drop-in alternatives with low Global Warming Potential (less than 150 or 700), nonflammable or slightly flammable are listed and discussed. The method developed in this study can be extended to evaluate alternatives for replacing other working fluids in any thermal application that will be restricted.

Abstract:Waste heat can be well utilized in absorption refrigeration systems. The auto-cascade absorption refrigeration system could obtain a lower temperature than that of the traditional absorption refrigeration system since the non-azeotropic mixed refrigerants with large temperature glides were used. In this article, the performance of an auto-cascade absorption refrigeration system using R23/R134a/DMF (dimethylformamide) solutions as the working substance was analyzed. Optimization analysis results showed that, to some extent, the coefficient of performance (COP) could be increased when the low pressure of the system decreased or the high pressure increased. The reasonable upper limit of the high pressure was the high pressure at the turning point of COP, and the reasonable lower limit of the low pressure was the low pressure at the turning point of COP. The COP of the system monotonously increased with the increase of the mole fraction of R23 in solutions. The low R23 mole fraction solutions were more appropriate.

Abstract:R41 was selected to substitute for R23 in an auto-cascade refrigeration cycle with a rectifying column at-60℃.Performance comparisons and analyses were conducted when R1234ze (E)was selected as the less volatile component.An experimental apparatus was designed and established to compare the performances of R23/R1234ze(E)and R41/R1234ze(E)in the system.Both theoretical and experimental results showed that when adopting R1234ze(E)as the less volatile component,COP values decreased slightly and the compression work per unit volume decreased by 1/3—1/2 after the substitution of R41 for R23.Besides,the refrigeration capacity per unit volume also decreased slightly,but the refrigeration capacity per unit mass showed an obvious increase, which would result in significant refrigerant charge reduction.More importantly,the reduction in GWP of R41 would bring obvious environmental protection effect.

Abstract:Based on the sequential quadratic programming(SQP),optimization of compositions for alternative mixture refrigerants is conducted with COP as object function under specified working conditions and constraints. The optimum compositions of several refrigerant mixtures as substitutes of R22 are obtained,and comparisons with other available substitutes are made. The results show that SQP is a quick and stable method with high accuracy, and the demand on initial value is not very strict. It can be used for selecting refrigerant substitutes and composition optimization.

Abstract:R32 has a number of advantages compared to R410A,such as zero ODP and less GWP value.It is now regarded as a possible substitute refrigerant for R410a.This paper presents a comprehensive review of the application of R32 on air conditioners and heat pumps by comparing both operational performances,such as the system efficiency and the requirement of refrigerant charge,between systems using R32 and R410a,and physical characteristics,such as lubrication oil preference and flammability,between both refrigerants.The comparison indicates although systems using R32 have slightly higher energy consumption and discharge temperature of compressor,it has much larger cooling capacity than that using R410a.Hence,R32 is ideal to replace R410A.However,there are still limitations for spreading the application of R32,such as the possible deterioration of system performance caused by a high compressor discharge temperature and the restriction on the refrigerant charge amount due to the A2L level flammability of R32.Nonetheless,domestic and international legislations tend to set less restriction for the application of R32.This tendency will certainly promote researches on using R32 to replace R410A in domestic air conditioner and heat pump systems.

Abstract:Steady-state simulation algorithms of variable composition and constant composition air- source heat pumps were proposed by using R32/R134a,R32/R134a(wt30/70)or R22 as working fluid respectively.Comparison on performances of both systems was also reported at the same working condition.The results show that the variable composition system can extend working temperature range and keep heat output constant.Power consumption and discharge pressure of compressor in this system are higher than R32/R134a(wt 30/70)'s but lower than R22's,and its heating coefficient of performance(COP_h)is higher than R22's.These results verify the advantages of variable composition mixture system modulating the capacity of air-source heat pumps.

Abstract:Phase-out of R22 will start in China but the existing alternatives to R22 are unsuitable in some application.On the basis of the present status and requirements for new environment-friendly alternatives,we proposed using R32 to replace R22 in household/commercial air conditioning in 2009.In this paper,the analyses on some issues for R32 to replace R22 are performed including evaluation of the effect on carbon dioxide emissions,the maximum charge limitation in a unit,the energy saving,the feasibility for the refrigerant transform in the air-conditioning industry and the chemical engineering industry,and the key problems to solve in the application.The comparison between R32 and some alternatives to R22 such as R410A,R290,and R161 is discussed.The results show that R32 may be an attractive long term candidate to replace R22 considering the balance of carbon dioxide emissions,safety,energy saving,and availability.

Abstract:The theoretical simulation and thermodynamic analyses of the Linde-Hampson refrigeration system using multiple eco-friendly zeotropic refrigerants are conducted to compare the optimal COP, volumetric refrigerating capacity and irreversibility distribution at the cold space temperature of-45 degrees C to-25 degrees C. The genetic algorithm is employed on the global optimization of Linde-Hampson refrigeration system to find out the optimal operating pressures and proportions of mixed refrigerants. By comparison, the most potential binary and ternary re-frigerants are selected as R744/R1234ze(Z) and R744/R1234ze(E)/R1234ze(Z), respectively. The temperature glide of ternary refrigerant is mainly regulated by the proportions of the middle-boiling-point and high-boiling -point components. The temperature glide of zeotropic refrigerants should well match the temperature span between heat reservoirs, since the matching degree plays an essential role in system performance, and it can be regarded as an important basis for the selection of mixed refrigerants. The results of comparison with the R744 two-stage compression transcritical refrigeration system and the cascade refrigeration system using R744 and R1234yf show that the Linde-Hampson system using suitable mixed refrigerants can obtain the greatest COP and can be considered as a supplement and alternative. The research results will provide a reference to the appli-cations of the Linde-Hampson refrigeration system using eco-friendly zeotropic refrigerants for freezing process in considerations of environmental protection, safety, and efficiency.

Abstract:Implementing the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol has imposed certain restrictions on the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Taking this opportunity to promote the alternatives of high global warming potential (GWP) HFC refrigerants in the room air conditioner (RAC) sector as well as improve the energy efficiency can bring double benefits. With the RAC sector as an example, a demand-emissions-cost model is developed to assess the potential and costs of emission reductions in different regions of China under different scenarios. The model includes three scenarios: a business as usual (BAU) scenario, a Kigali energy efficiency (KAE) scenario with simultaneous energy efficiency improvements following the Kigali amendment, and an accelerated transition energy efficiency (ATE) scenario with accelerated HFCs reduction and energy efficiency improvements. The results show that under the KAE and ATE scenario, the GHG emissions of the RAC sector will peak in 2025 at 389.8-393.9 Mt CO2-eq and 378.8-382.8 Mt CO2-eq in China. The main contribution to this result is the alternative of low GWP refrigerants. From 2021 to 2060, the cumulative direct emission reductions are about 6.4-7.4 Gt CO2-eq and 8.5-9.5 Gt CO2-eq in KAE and ATE, and the cumulative indirect emission re-ductions for both scenarios are 1.6-1.8 Gt CO2-eq. The cumulative abatement costs are $286-321 billion and $288-322 billion (prices in 2020). Under the ATE scenario, direct emissions from refrigerants in the RAC sector are near zero in 2060, and indirect emissions depend on the power system structure. The RAC sector's average abatement cost varies significantly in diverse climatic environments. Given the variation in average abatement cost, it is critical to tailor mitigation policies to local conditions to ensure maximum benefits.

Abstract:The performance of an auto-cascade refrigerator with a liquid-gas separator using six pairs of binary refrigerants with ozone depletion potential(ODP) of zero was optimized by a new approach at the temperature level of-60℃.The optimization results show that the refrigerant composition(the component and mole fraction) and operation pressure condition(the pressure level and pressure ratio) are the main parameters which determine the COP of the cycle.The 0.55 and 0.6 mole fractions of R23 for R23/R236ea are the most prospective nonflammable refrigerant among the R23/R134a, R23/R227ea,R23/R236ea at pressure ratios of 7 and 10,respectively.The 0.65 and 0.7 mole fractions of R170 for R170/R600 are the most prospective natural binary refrigerant among the R170/R290, R170/R600a and R170/R600 at pressure ratios of 7 and 10,respectively.
Experimental Study of Split Room Air Conditioner Charged with R290 and R1270 as Substitutes to R22

Abstract:It is urgent to seek more suitable refrigerants as the traditional R22 used widely in air conditioners nowadays is under phase out for its environmental problems and hydrofluorocarbons(HFCs) would aggravate global warming effects,while hydrocarbons(HCs) have drawn public attention.In this paper,R290 and R1270 were adopted as refrigerants in a R22 original split room air conditioner to carry out performance experiments using air-enthalpy test method.The results indicate that under normal condition,adopting R290 as a drop-in substitute to R22 would offer 5.0% lower cooling capacity and 10.3% higher energy efficiency ratio(EER),and the use of the 20% larger displacement compressor could help increase cooling capacity by 8.9%,but reduce EER by 8.3%,however,the performance is better than that of the original R22 system.And the performance of the R1270 system is better than that of the R290 system under normal condition.The results also show that,with respect to the original R22 system,HC systems have higher increase rate and greater increment in both cooling capacity and(EER) with the decrease of outdoor temperature and they have better performance when outdoor temperature is relatively low.The results demonstrate that HCs are promising substitutes to R22 and deserve wide application prospects in air conditioners.

Abstract:Currently, R410A refrigerant is widely used in the air conditioning system. However, R410A is a kind of binary hydrofluorocarbon mixtures that has significant climate change effect and scheduled to be phased out in future. To explore the possible alternative refrigerants, this study investigates several azeotropic and near-azeotropic mixtures consist of the new generation fluorinated refrigerant HFO-1243zf and its performance enhancer. First, a mathematical simulation model of the precision air conditioning system with a reheater was built and verified. Based on this, the refrigerating cycle performance, refrigerant charge, global warming potential, total equivalent warming impact (TEWI), flammability and economic analysis matters of R1243zf/R134a, R1243zf/RE170, and R1243zf/R227ea were studied. It is found that the required refrigerant charge can be reduced as 3.13% to 35.9%, compared to R410A; besides, the coefficients of performance are elevated in range of 1.05% to 10.25% with the proportion variation of R1243zf. All the new mixtures have smaller TEWI values than R410A, reducing 8.2% to 18.3%. The estimated prices of R1243zf/RE170 and R1243zf/R134a are lower than R410A. The flammability of R1243zf/R134a and R1243zf/R227ea are acceptable as the requirements of ISO standard 5149, but not for R1243zf/RE170. Comprehensively considering, R1243zf/R134a mixture with approximately equal mass ratio is thought to be an ideal substitute to R410A in precision air conditioning system under the current situation.

Abstract:<p>High global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants for refrigeration and heat pump systems or organic Rankine cycle systems are being phased out because of their impact on climate change, such as R134a, R410A and R404A. So it is urgent to find the refrigerants with excellent environmental protection performance. Firstly, nearly 40 alternative refrigerants, including pure refrigerants and mixed refrigerants, are classified according to their environmental and safety characteristics. Secondly, the performance parameters of some typical alternatives, such as refrigerating capacity, COP, safety and environmental protection, are comprehensively compared. It can be concluded that R513a and R466A have good comprehensive performance as alternative refrigerants of R134a and R410A respectively, while those alternatives to R404A have both advantages and disadvantages. The application and technical characteristics of R32, some typical HFOs, natural refrigerants and mixtures are summarized and analyzed. In addition, our group has carried out experimental and theoretical research on the flammability of low GWP and flammable refrigerants such as R1234yf, R161, R290, R600a and R1150, and found that hydrocarbons are more difficult to be inhibited than halogenated hydrocarbons. Finally, a new research idea on the risk of refrigerant explosion is put forward, which can cover the refrigerant leakage, combustion and risk aversion.</p>

Abstract:Increasing CO2 emission due to the practicing of high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant like R22 in split air conditioning (AC) units needs the best substitute to match with environment and safety protocols along with good energy efficiency. In this study, 14 alternative refrigerants have been chosen to replace R22 in a 1.5 TR capacity of split AC from the existing studies. The performance of each refrigerant has been analysed thermodynamically and compared their results with R22 by accounting for discharge temperature, power consumption, coefficient of performance (COP), total equivalent warming impact (TEWI) index, and life-time cost. Overall from this theoretical analysis, it was observed that the best refrigerant for each considered measure is not unique; for example, R290 was best in terms of refrigerant charge and discharge pressure, while R444B was chosen to be superior in terms of COP, TEWI, and life-time cost. Therefore, a multi-criteria decision-making methodology tool-based optimization has been carried out for selecting a single superior refrigerant for the future by considering thermal properties, COP, TEWI, and life-time cost. Results of the evaluation based on the distance from average solution envisage R290 and R1123 as superior and worst choices to replace R22.

Abstract:Refrigerants are largely produced and consumed in China currently, and the new agreement on the 19th meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol accelerated the phase-out of hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), so the alternative to refrigerants has become more urgent in China. Europe countries promote actively the natural refrigerants as the alternatives to HCFCs, and US mainly uses HFCs as the alternatives to HCFCs. The Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Alternative Refrigerants Evaluation Program (AREP) of the United States Air-conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and Technology & Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) Reports of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) are introduced in order to provide guidance of alternatives to HCFCs in various fields.

Abstract:CFCs and HCFCs, widely used in refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, have been or will be phased out according to the revisions of the Montreal Protocol because they deplete the ozone layer. Many substitutes have been proposed, but no one has perfectly replaced the CFC and HCFC refrigerants. New generation alternatives are being investigated worldwide. According to the industrial and environmental requirements, many factors should be considered in the screening and evaluation of refrigerant alternatives. A new method is proposed using the soft algebra method—fuzzy multiple evaluation. The weights for different factors are determined mathematically and criteria values for all the objects are made dimensionless to quantitatively compare the different alternatives. A new long-term drop-in mixture alternative THR02 is developed and evaluated in a series of theoretical and experimental evaluations. THR02 is proved to be an environment-friendly, nontoxic, inflammable, drop-in alternative to CFC-12 and HFC-134a. The thermal performance of the compressors and refrigerators with THR02 as a drop-in is equal to or higher than with CFC-12 and HFC-134a. The compressor and refrigerator using THR02 perform reliably after long-period running.

The present status, analyzes problems and requirements for new environment-friendly alternative. Also advances an idea using R32 to replace R22 in household/commercial air-conditioning, compares and analyzes the thermophysical properties, environmental characteristics, safety, theoretic cycle performance, market availability of R32, R410A, R290 and R1234yf. It shows that R32 is an electric choice considering carbon dioxide emissions, safety, energy-saving and market availability, and is an ideal refrigerant alternative to replace R22.
