Abstract:This paper is about architect Professor Xia changshi,the forerunner of Ungnan modern architecture.By studying his life and works,it describs his persistence in modernity at a specific period of historical histoical and political environment,which affected the Lingnan architecture education and practice.Xia changsh s the first one to combine western modern architectural theory with regional culture and climatic characteristics of the Lingnan area,which effect greatly on the development of Lingnan modem architecture.

Abstract:In the first half of the 20th century, Chinese renaissance style became the dominant architectural style in China, with striking characters such as big roof and exquisite decorations.Such style was adopted by American architects in chapels and educational facilities,by Kuomindang in Nanjing,by Japanese in northeast China, and by PRC after 1949. Abstract:In the process of modernization of Chinese Architecture at the beginning of the 20th century,the emerging public as well as professional media played a crucial role in the foundation of a Modern Architecture discipline.Modern media has fundamentally changed the nature of the Architectural discipline and the modern profession of architects as well,which has been ignored in traditional paradigms of historical studies in the history of Modern Chinese Architecture.This article aims to cast fresh light on the relations between emerging public media and emerging professional Chinese architects drawing on early 20th century periodicals and documents.The whole discussion will cover three aspects:the public image of modern architects,architects' intervention into public media and the tension between professional and cultural identity in the first modern architects.
