Abstract:In this paper, we prove the 2-dimensional Bernstein theorem for a class of fourth order equations including Abreu’s equation. The main ingredients of the paper are the a priori estimates and the proof of the strict convexity.

Abstract:We prove a Bernstein type theorem for ancient solutions to the mean curvature flow in higher codimension. More precisely, we show that for a complete ancient solution { M t } t ∈ ( − ∞ , 0 ) \{M_t\}_{t\in (-\infty ,0)} , if the mean curvature vector is uniformly bounded and the ω \omega -function for M t M_t satisfies ω ≥ ω 0 \omega \geq \omega _0 uniformly for some constant ω 0 > 1 2 \omega _0>\frac {1}{\sqrt {2}} , then M t M_t must be an affine subspace for each t ∈ ( − ∞ , 0 ) t\in (-\infty ,0) .
Interior Estimates for the Monge–Ampère Type Fourth Order Equations

Abstract:In this paper, we give several new approaches to study interior estim-ates for a class of fourth order equations of Monge-Ampere type. First, we prove interior estimates for the homogeneous equation in dimension two by using the par-tial Legendre transform. As an application, we obtain a new proof of the Bernstein theorem without using Caffarelli-Gutierrez's estimate, including the Chern conjec-ture on affine maximal surfaces. For the inhomogeneous equation, we also obtain a new proof in dimension two by an integral method relying on the Monge-Ampere Sobolev inequality. This proof works even when the right-hand side is singular. In higher dimensions, we obtain the interior regularity in terms of integral bounds on the second derivatives and the inverse of the determinant.

Abstract:Let Vn+1 be an (n + 1)-dimensional real vector space and (F) over tilde = (alpha) over tilde phi(s) s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be all (alpha, beta)-metric, where (alpha) over tilde is an Euclidean metric and (beta) over tilde is a one form. Minimal surfaces with respect to the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and the Holmes-Thompson measure are called BH-minimal and HT-minimal surfaces, respectively. We give a Bernstein type theorem for minimal graphs in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde) with n <= 7. Let (F) over tilde (b) = (alpha) over tilde phi(s), s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be a Minkowski metric with b := parallel to(beta) over tilde parallel to(alpha) over tilde. We use a PDE to characterize the BH-minimal and HT-minimal graph over any hyperplane containing the origin in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde (b)). Then we prove that this PDE is an elliptic equation of mean curvature type when b is an element of [0, is an element of) for sonic constant is an element of > 0 and give a Bernstein type theorem for BH-minimal surface in (V-3, (F) over tilde (b)). BH-minimal cones with an isolated singularity at the origin are also given.

Differential Geometry and its Applications

Abstract:C.P. Wang [Geom. Dedicata 51 (1994) 63–74] studied the Euler–Lagrange equation for the centroaffine area functional of hypersurfaces. In terms of a local representation of the hypersurface as a graph, this equation is a complicated, strongly non-linear fourth order PDE. We consider classes of solutions satisfying these equations together with completeness conditions. We also formulate appropriate centroaffine Bernstein problems and give partial solutions.

Abstract:In this paper we first introduce a transform for convex functions and use it to prove a Bernstein theorem for a Monge-Ampere equation in half space. We then prove the optimal global regularity for a class of Monge-Ampere type equations arising in a number of geometric problems such as Poincare metrics, hyperbolic affine spheres, and Minkowski type problems.

Abstract:We study the solvability of the second boundary value problem for a class of highly singular fourth order equations of Monge–Ampère type. They arise in the approximation of convex functionals subject to a convexity constraint using Abreu type equations. Both the Legendre transform and partial Legendre transform are used in our analysis. In two dimensions, we establish global solutions to the second boundary value problem for highly singular Abreu equations where the right hand sides are of q-Laplacian type for all $$q>1$$ . We show that minimizers of variational problems with a convexity constraint in two dimensions that arise from the Rochet–Choné model in the monopolist’s problem in economics with q-power cost can be approximated in the uniform norm by solutions of the Abreu equation for a full range of q.

Abstract:In curve and surface modeling, Bernstein polynomial compositions are widely used for various geometric operations. So it is important to investigate them both in theory and practice. The problems are investigated by using polynomial interpolation and symbolic computation, and the proposed method is applied for curve and surface cases. Compared with two existing methods, the proposed method has the advantages on computational cost, coding efficiency, storage cost. However its numerical accuracy is lower than the method based on the generalized de Casteljau algorithm.

Abstract:Bernstein polynomials provide a constructive proof for the Weierstrass approximation theorem, which states that every continuous function on a closed bounded interval can be uniformly approximated by polynomials with arbitrary accuracy. Interestingly the proof of this result can be done using elementary probability theory. This way one can even get error bounds for Lipschitz functions. In this note, we present these techniques and show how the method can be extended naturally to other interesting situations. As examples, we obtain in an elementary way results for the Szász-Mirakjan operator and the Baskakov operator.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the general Bernstein functions for the first time. The properties of generalized Bernstein basis functions are given and demonstrated. The classical Bernstein polynomial bases are merely a subset of the general Bernstein functions. Based on the new Bernstein base functions and the collocation method, we present a numerical method for solving linear and nonlinear χ ‐fractional differential equations ( χ ‐FDEs) with variable coefficients. The fractional derivative used in this work is the χ ‐Caputo fractional derivative sense ( χ ‐CFD). Combining the Bernstein functions basis and the collocation methods yields the approximation solution of nonlinear differential equations. These base functions can be used to solve many problems in applied mathematics, including calculus of variations, differential equations, optimal control, and integral equations. Furthermore, the convergence of the method is rigorously justified and supported by numerical experiments.

Abstract:Bernstein's classical inequality asserts that given a trigonometric polynomial $T$ of degree $n\geq1$, the sup-norm of the derivative of $T$ does not exceed $n$ times the sup-norm of $T$. We present various approaches to prove this inequality and some of its natural extensions/variants, especially when it comes to replacing the sup-norm with the $L^p-norm$.

Abstract:In this paper, a compact finite difference scheme with global convergence order O(tau(2) + h(4)) is derived for fourth-order fractional sub-diffusion equations subject to Neumann boundary conditions. The difficulty caused by the fourth-order derivative and Neumann boundary conditions is carefully handled. The stability and convergence of the proposed scheme are studied by the energy method. Theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments.
