Abstract:Microstructures and corrosion behaviours of forged CoNiCrMo alloy, forged CoCrMo alloy and cast CoCrMoC alloy after different heat treatments in saline solution with or without citrate and Hanks' solution have been studied. The tesults showed that the recrystallization temperatures of the both forged alloys were 1000 degrees C, the grains grew with the increase of solution heat treatment and prolonging of aging time. The alloys presented typical anodic polarization behavior of cobalt-based alloys in saline solution. A secondary passive region was observed in Hanks' solution and the secondary passive region of forged CoNiCrMo alloy was narrower than those of the other two alloys. The addition of citrate in saline solution decreased the transpassive potential and heat treatments did not significantly influence the anodic polarization behavior for all three alloys.

Abstract:There is a very complicated electrolytical environment in oral cavity with plenty of microorganisms existing there. Various forms of corrosion would develop when metallic prosthesis functions in mouth. One important corrosive form is microbial corrosion. The metabolic products, including organic acid and inorganic acid, will affect the pH of the surface or interface of metallic prosthesis and make a change in composition of the medium, thus influencing the electron-chemical reaction and promoting the development of corrosion. The problem of develpoment of microbial corrosion on dental alloy in the oral environment lies in the primary condition that the bacteria adhere to the surface of alloy and form a relatively independent environment that promotes corrosion.

Abstract:Cobalt–chromium (Co-Cr) alloys have been widely used as dental-restoration materials for many years. This study sought to investigate whether selective laser melting (SLM) is a more appropriate process than traditional casting (CAST) for fabricating dental Co-Cr alloys. Metallurgical microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Vickers hardness and nanoindentation tests, and friction and wear tests were used to evaluate the microstructure, surface compositions, mechanical properties, and wear resistance, respectively. Additionally, the biocompatibilities and cell adhesion of the alloys were evaluated with L-929 fibroblasts via CCK-8 assay, Live/Dead staining, flow cytometric analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation and real-time PCR (RT-PCR) assay. The XPS results showed that the two alloys were all mainly comprised of Co, Cr, and O. The hardness in the CAST group equaled 7.15 ± 0.48 GPa, while in the SLM group, it equaled 9.06 ± 0.49 GPa. The friction coefficient of SLM alloys remained at approximately 0.46, but the CAST specimens fluctuated significantly. SLM alloys exhibited shallower wear scars and less wear debris compared with CAST alloys, simultaneously. Additionally, there were higher survival and expression of cell-adhesion-related genes on SLM alloys of L-929 cells, which meant that the deleterious effect on L-929 cells was significantly reduced compared with that for the CAST alloys. Overall, the wear resistances and biocompatibilities of the Co-Cr dental alloys were dramatically affected by the fabrication technique. The SLM technique is advantageous over the CAST technique for fabricating Co-Cr dental alloys.

Abstract:This study explores the corrosion behavior of a dental cobalt–chromium (Co–Cr) alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) under conditions simulating the oral environment. Specimens were fabricated using either SLM or traditional casting methods. Microstructure and surface characteristics were evaluated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. In addition, sample corrosion characteristics were assessed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Large microstructural differences were observed between SLM and traditional cast samples, with SLM exhibiting a more compact and homogeneous microstructure. The SLM samples also exhibited a slightly thicker surface oxide layer in comparison to traditional cast samples. In artificial saliva at pH 5, no differences were observed in the electrochemical corrosion properties or XPS surface characteristics of SLM and traditional cast specimens. However, in artificial saliva at pH 2.5, significant differences in electrochemical corrosion properties were observed, with SLM specimens exhibiting more corrosion resistance in comparison to traditional cast samples. The enhanced corrosion resistance of SLM samples in an acidic environment provides further support for their use in dental applications, where the oral environment can become temporarily acidic after meals.

Abstract:The keeper and cast dowel-coping, as a primary component for a magnetic attachment, is easily subjected to corrosion in a wet environment, such as the oral cavity, which contains electrolyte-rich saliva, complex microflora and chewing behaviour and so on. The objective of this in vitro study was to examine the corrosion resistance of a dowel and coping-keeper complex fabricated by finish keeper and three alloys (cobalt-chromium, CoCr; silver-palladium-gold, PdAu; gold-platinum, AuPt) using a laser-welding process and a casting technique. The surface morphology characteristics and microstructures of the samples were examined by means of metallographic microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) with SEM provided elements analysis information for the test samples after 10% oxalic acid solution etching test. Tafel polarization curve recordings demonstrated parameter values indicating corrosion of the samples when subjected to electrochemical testing. This study has suggested that massive oxides are attached to the surface of the CoCr-keeper complex but not to the AuPt-keeper complex. Only the keeper area of cast CoCr-keeper complex displayed obvious intergranular corrosion and changes in the Fe and Co elements. Both cast and laser-welded AuPt-keeper complexes had the highest free corrosion potential, followed by the PdAu-keeper complex. We concluded that although the corrosion resistance of the CoCr-keeper complex was worst, the keeper surface passive film was actually preserved to its maximum extent. The laser-welded CoCr- and PdAu-keeper complexes possessed superior corrosion resistance as compared with their cast specimens, but no significant difference was found between the cast and laser-welded AuPt-keeper complexes. The Fe-poor and Cr-rich band, appearing on the edge of the keeper when casting, has been proven to be a corrosion-prone area.
Analysis of microstructure and fatigue of cast versus selective laser-melted dental Co-Cr alloy

Abstract:Statement of problem: The forces exerted on teeth and prostheses during mastication are repeated and dynamic, resulting in fatigue damage to dental prostheses. Most fractures of dental restorations are fatigue failure. The 4-point bend fatigue behavior of Co-Cr-Mo-W alloys manufactured by investment casting (CAST) and selective laser melting (SLM) has received little attention. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the 4-point bend fatigue property of dental Co-Cr alloys and determine the relationship between microstructure and the 4-point bend fatigue property of Co-Cr alloys created by traditional casting and SLM. These can guide the use of Co-Cr alloy in dentistry. Material and methods: Co-Cr-Mo-W alloys were fabricated with a dimension of 45×2×2 mm by investment casting and SLM. The 3-point bend test measured the ultimate bend strength with 3 specimens in each group. The 4-point bend fatigue test evaluated the fatigue life under various stresses, with 6 specimens in each group. The specimens were mechanically ground, polished, and electrochemically etched. Scanning electron microscopy was used to identify the microstructures of both etched specimens and fracture surfaces. X-ray diffraction investigations were used to determine the phases. Significant differences in the bend strength were analyzed by using the independent samples t test (α=.05), and the fatigue test was analyzed with ANCOVA (α=.05). Results: The mean ±standard deviation bend strength of SLM specimens was 1837 ±3 MPa, higher than the 1200 ±6 MPa for CAST specimens (P<.05). The maximum bend stress of the SLM specimens without fatigue failure was 735 MPa, which was statistically higher than the 394 MPa for CAST specimens (P<.05). The microstructure characteristics of the SLM alloy contributed to its excellent fatigue performance. In SLM alloy, the γ phase constituted the majority with some ε and Laves phases, while the cast alloy possessed higher ε and Laves phases. The grains of SLM alloy were equiaxed and fine, and the second phases were fine and dispersive. In contrast, the cast alloy possessed clear dendrites, and the second phases were sizable. Conclusions: The SLM dental Co-Cr-Mo-W alloy had statistically better 4-point bend fatigue properties than cast alloy, which was associated with an improved microstructure.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the electrochemical-corrosion behavior of a dental cobalt-chromium(Co-Cr) alloy fabricated by selective laser melting(SLM) under conditions simulating the oral environment.Methods Co-Cr alloy specimens for dental use(cylinder,10 mm in diameter and 3 mm in thickness) were obtained by fabrication with the same Co-Cr alloy using SLM technique(SLM group,n=5) or traditional cast technique(control group,n=5).The electrochemical-corrosion behavior of the specimens were analysed with the parameter of polarization resistance(Rp),which was examined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests in an artificial saliva solution with two different pHs(before diet,5.0;after diet,2.5).Results At pH of 5.0,Rp values of SLM group and control group were 4.25±1.11 and 3.82±1.40 respectively,and there was no significant difference between two groups(P0.05).At pH of 2.5,Rp values of SLM group and control group were 5.83±0.88 and 3.49±0.83 respectively,and there were significant differences between two groups(P0.05).Conclusion Compared with traditional cast technique,dental Co-Cr alloy fabricated by SLM has better anti-corrosion behavior in acid oral environment after diet.

Abstract:Dental alloys based on Co or Ni are commonly used in dentistry to fabricate dental prostheses, including crowns, bridges, and partial dentures, but even though both alloys are highly biocompatible, some patients may experience allergic reactions to nickel. This comparative study investigated the behavior of two dental alloys in the oral cavity, analyzing their microstructure, corrosion behavior, elastic modulus, hardness, and tensile strength for ingot and cast crowns. The microstructures of commercial Ni-Cr and Co-Cr samples were analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD); elastic modulus and corrosion behavior were determined after immersing the samples in artificial saliva. Ni-Cr alloy has a corrosion potential more negative than Co-Cr alloy; this means that the first alloy is more likely to undergo corrosion than the second alloy. Ni-Cr sample with a higher elastic modulus is generally more rigid and less flexible than Co-Cr sample with a lower elastic modulus. The analyzed Co-Cr alloy has a higher resistance to corrosion, resulting in a more esthetically pleasing and longer-lasting restoration. The Co-Cr alloy also has a lower density than the Ni-Cr alloy, which, combined with its strength-to-weight ratio, makes them ideal for partial dentures where the prosthesis needs to be lightweight. The Co-Cr alloy is more flexible than the Ni-Cr alloy, making it stronger and more durable. This makes them an ideal choice for dental prostheses that need to withstand high stresses and loads.

Abstract:Cobalt-chromium alloys have been applied to dental porcelain fused to metal (PFM) restorations over the past decades owing to their excellent corrosion resistance, good biocompatibility and low price. The production of CoCr metal-ceramic restorations has always been based on traditional lost-wax casting techniques. However, in recent years, selective laser melting (SLM) is becoming more and more highly valued by dental laboratories and dental practitioners due to its individuation, precision and efficiency. This paper mainly reviews the recent researches on the production process of copings, microstructure, mechanical property, metal-ceramic bond strength, fit of copings, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of SLM CoCr metal-ceramic alloy.

Abstract:This study presents the correct processing of Co-Cr alloys as a method of preserving the properties of the materials as-cast, and therefore they can be safely placed in contact with the oral cavity tissues as resistance frameworks. The basic materials analyzed in this study were five commercial Co-Cr dental alloys with different components obtained in three processing steps. The analysis of the electrochemical behavior at the surface of the Co-Cr alloys was performed by electrochemical measurements: impedance spectroscopy (EIS), open circuit electrical potential (OCP), and linear polarization (LP). In terms of validation, all five alloys had a tendency to generate a stable oxide layer at the surface. After the measurements and the graphical representation, the alloy that had a higher percentage of tungsten (W) and iron (Fe) in composition showed a higher tendency of anodizing. After the application of the heat treatment, the disappearance of the hexagonal phase was observed, with the appearance of new phases of type (A,B)2O3 corresponding to some oxide compounds, such as Fe2O3, Cr2O3, (Cr,Fe)2O3, and CoMnO3. In conclusion, the processing of Co-Cr alloys by melting and casting in refractory molds remains a viable method that can support innovation, in the context of technology advance in recent years towards digitalization of the manufacturing process, i.e., the construction of prosthetic frameworks conducted by additive methods using Co-Cr powder alloy.
Selective laser melting dental CoCr alloy: microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance

Abstract:Purpose In this paper, the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of CoCr alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) were studied, and the changes of performance after porcelain sintering process were also analysed. This study is to point out the relationship between the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of CoCr alloys prepared by SLM after porcelain sintering process. In addition, the biosafety of the sintered CoCr alloy was evaluated. Design/methodology/approach The microscopic feature changes of CoCr alloy samples after porcelain sintering process were observed by DMI 5000 M inverted metallographic microscope and Nova Nano430 FE-SEM. Moreover, phase identification and determination were conducted by X-ray diffraction (XRD) using Smartlab X-ray diffractometer. The Vickers microhardness was measured on the HVS-30 microhardness tester, and tensile tests were carried out on a CM3505 electronic universal testing machine. The corrosion resistance was tested by a classical three-point electrode system electrochemical method, then the ion precipitation was measured by using an atomic absorption spectrometer of Z2000 7JQ8024. Findings The XRD results indicate that the transition of γ phase (FCC) to e phase (HCP) occurs during the porcelain sintering processing of CoCr alloy. Moreover, the Vickers microhardness of the upper surface and the side surface of the CoCr alloy sample was improved by more than 36%. In addition, the ultimate strength of CoCr alloy via porcelain sintering treatment was increase to 1,395.3 ± 53.0 MPa compared to 1,282.7 ± 10.1 MPa of unprocessed CoCr alloy. However, the corrosion resistance of CoCr alloy samples decreases after porcelain sintering process. Originality/value There are few studies on the relationship of microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of CoCr alloys prepared by SLM after porcelain sintering process. In this study, the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of CoCr alloy after porcelain sintering process were studied, and the biosafety of the alloy was evaluated. The research found that it is feasible to apply CoCr alloy fabricated by SLM to dental medicine after porcelain sintering process.

Abstract:Cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy is a widely used base material for dental fixed prostheses. These restorations can be produced through casting technique, subtractive or additive manufacturing technologies. However, limited information is available regarding the influence of manufacturing techniques on the properties of Co-Cr alloy since most studies used different chemical compositions of Co-Cr alloy for different manufacturing methods. This study compares the mechanical properties, metal-ceramic bond strength, and microstructures of specimens produced by casting, milling, and selective laser melting (SLM) from one single Co-Cr alloy composition. The mechanical properties of the alloy were investigated by tensile and Vickers hardness tests, and metal-ceramic bond strength was determined by three-point bending. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with backscattered electron (BSE) images and optical microphotographs were used to analyze the surface microstructures. Compared with the casting and milling techniques, SLM Co-Cr alloy specimens indicated enhanced mechanical properties and comparable metal-ceramic bond strength. Besides, the microstructures of the SLM specimens showed finer grains with more second phase particles than the casting and milling specimens. The results of our study indicate that SLM might be superior to traditional techniques for the manufacturing of fixed dental restorations.

Electrochemical Impedance Investigation of Ni-free Co-Cr-Mo and Co-Cr-Mo-Ni Dental Casting Alloy for Partial Removable Dental Prosthesis Frameworks

Abstract:Statement of problem. The pH level of the oral environment influences corrosion in dental materials. Corrosion behaviors of Co-Cr-Mo and Co-Cr-Mo-Ni alloys in different pH environments remain undetermined.Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface properties and corrosion behaviors of Co-Cr-Mo and Co-Cr-Mo-Ni dental casting alloys in artificial saliva at pH values of 5.0 and 2.5.Material and methods. Fifty specimens were divided into 2 groups according to the alloy composition. The surface compositions, hardness values, and microstructures of the alloys were measured before immersion in artificial saliva. The corrosion behaviors of the specimens in artificial saliva at pH values of 5.0 and 2.5 were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The microstructures were examined again after a 7-day immersion test. Data were analyzed by a 1-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test (alpha=.05).Results. AS expected, the relative levels of Co and Cr of the surface composition were higher in the Co-Cr-Mo alloy. The Co-Cr-Mo alloy had statistically higher surface hardness than the Co-Cr-Mo-Ni alloy (P<.05). In the pH 2.5 environment, both of the alloys showed decreased corrosion resistance (P<.05). The microstructure of the Co-Cr-Mo-Ni alloy corroded more than that of the Co-Cr-Mo alloy in the pH 2.5 environment. The oxide-layer corrosion resistance of the Co-Cr-Mo alloy was better than that of the Co-Cr-Mo-Ni alloy in Fusayama artificial saliva solutions at pH values of both 5.0 and 2.5 (P<.05).Conclusions. The corrosion resistance of the Co-Cr-Mo alloy was better in the oral environment, especially at a low pH value.
Corrosion resistance of the Pt-Fe-Nb magnets for dental-casting

Abstract:Magnetic attachments have been used in clinical dental practice, but there is some difficulties associated with removable bridges. One possible solution is to make whole bridges of Pt-Fe magnet alloys and its abutment out of magnetic stainless steel by casting. In terms of castability and magnetic properties, the promising composition of the Pt-Fe-Nb magnet alloy is Pt-30.0 mass% Fe-0.6 mass% Nb and Pt-30.0 mass% Fe-0.5 mass% Nb-0.03 mass% Si. In the present study, the corrosion resistance of these alloys was investigated based on the elusion test, electrochemical behavior and surface characterization by EPMA analysis. The released elements from the Pt-Fe-Nb magnets were mainly Fe ions in quantities similar to that of stainless steel for biomedical use, and the Pt-Fe-Nb magnet alloy, the Pt-Fe-Nb-Si magnet alloy and platinum resembled each other in electrochemical behavior. The present findings suggest, that the Pt-Fe-Nb magnet alloy provides excellent corrosion resistance and has important clinical dental applications.
Comparative analysis of the microstructures and mechanical properties of Co-Cr dental alloys fabricated by different methods

Abstract:Statement of problem: Limited information is available regarding the microstructures and mechanical properties of Co-Cr dental alloys prepared using conventional casting (CAST), computer numerical control (CNC) milling, and selective laser melting (SLM). Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the mechanical properties and microstructures of Co-Cr dental alloys fabricated using conventional casting, computer numerical control milling, and selective laser melting and to estimate the potential of applying the SLM technique in prosthetic dentistry. Material and methods: Each group (n=6) of 50-mm-long Co-Cr alloy, dumbbell-shaped specimens was fabricated using the CAST, CNC, and SLM techniques. For each technique, the corresponding commercial alloy material was used. The mechanical properties were evaluated using a tensile test according to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 6892, including 0.2% yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, elongation, and fracture analysis. The microstructures of the specimens were evaluated by using metallurgical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy. The Tukey honest significant difference test (α=.05) was used to statistically analyze the 0.2% yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and microhardness values. Results: The microstructures of the SLM specimens exhibited homogeneously distributed fine grains, dispersed second-phase particles, and few defects, and the XRD results showed the α-Co phase predominated, with minimal ε-Co phase and no harmful needle σ phase in the SLM group. The mean ±standard deviation of the 0.2% yield strength of the SLM specimens was 790 ±11 MPa, and the ultimate tensile strength was 1072 ±18 MPa. These values exceeded those of the CAST and CNC specimens by approximately 50% (P<.05). The SLM group showed the highest microhardness (475.3 ±10.2 HV10), followed by the CNC (325.2 ±17.8 HV10) and CAST group (323.7 ±27.2 HV10). Additionally, the ductility and toughness of the SLM specimens were also better than those of the other 2 groups. No significant differences were found in the mechanical performance between the CNC and CAST specimens (P>.05). Conclusions: The microstructures and mechanical properties of Co-Cr dental alloys were dependent on the fabrication techniques. The SLM specimens exhibited better microstructures and mechanical properties than those fabricated with CNC or CAST.
Assessment of precipitation behavior in dental castings of a Co-Cr-Mo alloy

Abstract:This study investigated solute portioning and precipitation in dental castings of a Co-Cr-Mo alloy and discussed their effects on alloy performance, in particular, the mechanical properties. Samples of a commercial Co-29Cr-6Mo (mass%) alloy were prepared using a dental-casting machine. The precipitates formed owing to the partitioning behaviors of the alloying elements were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction analysis, electron probe microanalysis, and transmission electron microscopy. The prepared samples exhibited a very coarse face-centered-cubic γ-phase dendritic structure with an average grain size of a few millimeters. A large number of precipitates, which decomposed further into complex interdendritic constituents (σ- and M23C6 carbide phases) were observed in the interdendritic regions rich in Cr, Mo, Si, and C. A reaction between the σ-phase and carbon is probably responsible for the carbide M23C6; however, this reaction did not occur to completion in the current case in spite of slow cooling (i.e., long exposure to elevated temperatures) in dental casting. While these precipitates result in high strength (hardness) and/or brittleness, the properties can be improved further by optimizing the alloy composition and the manufacturing process. The results of this study shed light on the significance of precipitation control in dental castings of Co-Cr-Mo alloys and should aid in the design of novel biomedical Co-Cr-based dental alloys that exhibit better performances.
Cycle fatigue of the alloy casting clasp

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The cycle fatigue of clasps casted by different alloys may occur when the denture is token off and worn in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the research conditions on the causes, effecting factors and test methods of cycle fatigue of casting clasp. METHODS: A computer-based online search of papers published between January 1996 to January 2011 was performed in Medline database, CNKI database and Wanfang database using the key words of "casting clasp, cycle fatigue, effecting factors, test methods" in English and in Chinese. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Currently, there are many casting clasp made of different alloy materials used in clinical work and satisfactory clinical effect have been already acquired. For instants, the cobalt-chromium alloy, titanium alloy and the high-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy which is gradually used in clinical work. In the use of removable partial denture, the phenomenon of cycle fatigue of the casting clasp will come out because of access repeatedly to the undercut abutment area. There are many studies on the causes, effecting factors and test methods of cycle fatigue of casting clasp. But how to decrease the cycle fatigue effectively is still unclear.
