Abstract:Online fuel pebble burnup measurement in a future high temperature gas cooling reactor is proposed for implementation through a high purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometer. By using KORIGEN software and MCNP Monte Carlo simulations, the single pebble gamma radiations to be recorded in the detector are simulated under different irradiation histories. A specially developed algorithm is applied to analyze the generated spectra to reconstruct the gamma activity of the 137Cs monitoring nuclide. It is demonstrated that by taking into account the intense interfering peaks, the 137Cs activity in the spent pebbles can be derived with a standard deviation of 3.0% (1σ). The results support the feasibility of utilizing the HPGe spectrometry in the online determination of the pebble burnup in future modular pebble bed reactors.

Abstract:High Temperature gas-cooled Reactor-Pebble bed Modular(HTR-PM) requires a online burnup assay system to check whether a fuel pebbe should be discharged from fuel circulation according to its burnup value.Each pebble that has flowed out of the core is going to undergo decay and cooling before the burnup measurement,so the interval of decay-cooling time influences the burnup measurement.The paper analyzes this effect using the isotopic depletion and decay analysis code of KORIGEN and particle transport code of MCNP.The result shows that the decay-cooling time of 50 hours can meet the HTR-PM requirement well with the choice of suitable γ spectrum analysis method.

Abstract:During the normal operation of a pebble bed gas-cooled reactor (PBR), the fuel pebbles undergo a multi-circulation on the basis of online burnup assay. In our last ICONE paper, we proposed a model to describe the relationship between online burnup assay and economy and safety of PBR. It was concluded that improvements on burnup assay accuracy could reduce fuel cost as well as the possibility that excessive burnup of fuel pebble results in unexpected radioactive discharge. However further work was expected on the burnup distribution of pebbles in and out of the core to precisely quantify the relationship. In this paper, the methodology to construct the burnup distribution of fuel pebbles in and out of the core is proposed. Firstly a model for pebble flow circulation is developed to provide a basic simulation framework. Then the irradiation history of fuel pebble could be tracked by combining pebble flow model and burn up calculation. The representative kinematic model and discrete element method (DEM) are introduced to numerically simulate the profiles of pebble flow. The classical batch-tracking methods as well as our newly-introduced DEM-tracking method are presented to perform the time-dependent analysis of pebble burnup. Overall with the burnup data obtained after going through multiple cycles, the burnup distribution of fuel pebbles in and out of the core could be reconstructed through the statistics result according to the pebble circulation model. Finally the quantification of the relationship between the pebble burnup assay and the economy and safety of the PBR would be more precise, thus providing implications on proposing reasonable requirements for accuracy of online burnup assay.

Abstract:The online fuel pebble burnup determination in future modular pebble bed reactor is implemented by measuring nondestructively the activity of the monitoring nuclide Cs-137 with HPGe detector on a pebble-by-pebble basis. Based on a full size prototype the feasibility is investigated. The prototype was first tested by using double sources to show that a precision of 2.8% (1��) can be achieved in the determination of the Cs-137 net counting rate. Then, the relationship between the Cs-137 activity and the net counting rate recorded in the HPGe detector is calibrated with a standard Cs-137 source contained in the center of a graphite sphere with the same dimension as a real fuel pebble. Because the self attenuation of the calibration source differs with a fuel pebble, a correction factor of 1.07 �� 0.02 (p = 0.95) to the calibration is derived by using the efficiency transfer method. Last, by analyzing the spectra generated with KORIGEN software followed by Monte Carlo simulation, it is predicted that the relative standard deviation of the Cs-137 net counting rate can be still controlled below 3.5% despite of the presence of all the interfering peaks. The results demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing HPGe gamma spectrometry in the online determination of the pebble burnup in future modular pebble bed reactors. ? 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Fuel spheres of the pebble bed high temperature gas-cooled reactor were non-destructively monitored on-line to ensure whether they reach their end-of-life burnup limit (80GWD/MTU).The core inventory Code (KORIGEN) and Monte-Carlo Code (MCNP4A) was used to simulate the burnup of fuel sphere and the response of HPGe detector, respectively. Uncertainty of burnup measurement was studied under different burnup values and cooling times. If indicator fissile nuclide of burnup measurement is 137Cs and counting statistical certainty of 5% for the bunrnup measurement system is met,the cooling time of the fuel shpere will be more than 6 d and the time of burnup measurement will be more than 15 s after the simulation results of the HPGe gamma-ray spectrometer for the irradiated fuel spheres are analyzed .

Abstract:The burnup value for burnup measurement system of 10 MW high temperature gas-cooled reactor was determined at on-line monitor by mean of nondestructive high-pure germanium gamma spectroscopy. An attenuation factor of the measurement system was calculated using MCNP4A code. Based on analysis of gamma-ray spectra for nuclear fuel of radioactive fission products and measurement of 137Cs and 134Cs activities, results of the burnup measurement were discussed.

Abstract:Online burnup measurement is a unique feature for pebble bed gas-cooled reactor and the fuel balls undergo a multi-circulation on the basis of the online burnup assay. It is ascertained that the accuracy of the online burnup assay is related with the economy and safety of pebble bed reactor. In the economical perspective, the burnup assay accuracy allow some part of pebbles that are below the burnup limit in the orifice to be discharged out of the core. In the safety view, the burnup assay allow some part of pebbles in the reactor core to exceed the burnup limit. In this paper, a mathematical model is proposed to establish the relationship. The model is implemented based on some reasonable theoretical hypothesis, and the influence of assay accuracy on the reactor safety and fuel cost issues are discussed based on the simulated results given by different assay accuracy. It is ascertained that improvements on burnup assay accuracy could save the fuel cost and improve the PBR economical efficiency as well as reduce the probability of radioactive release due to over-irradiation and enhance the safe reliability of PBR. Further research on the burnup distribution of pebbles in and out of the core and the burnup assay model are expected to provide some implications on proposing reasonable requirements for accuracy of online burnup assay.

Abstract:The fuel pebbles pass through the reactor core several times in a pebble bed high temperature gas cooled reactor(HTR).The burnup of the fuel balls is measured after they are discharged from the core bottom by a burnup measurement device.Those whose burnup does not reach the threshold are returned to the top of the core to pass through the core again,with the others transferred to the spent fuel storage tank.However,these random errors in the burnup measurement affect the fuel cycle.The MCPHS code,which is based on the Monte Carlo method,was used to analyze the characteristics of the pebble bed flow to simulate the random error in burnup measurement and its effect on the fuel cycle.The results show that the average discharge burnup and the distribution of the burnup in the core are not sensitive to the random error,while the distribution of the discharge burnup and the maximum and minimum discharge burnups are particularly sensitive to the random error in the burnup measurement.

Abstract:The feasibility of utilizing a High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector for the fuel element burnup measurement in a future Modular Pebble Bed Reactor (MPBR) was studied. First, the HPGe spectrometer was set-up for running the detector at high count rates while keeping the energy resolution adequately high to discriminate the Cs-137 peak from other interfering peaks. Based on these settings, the geometrical conditions are settled. Next, experiments were performed with Co-60 and Cs-137 sources to mimic the counting rates in real applications. With the aid of KORIGEN and MCNP/G4 simulations, it was demonstrated that the uncertainty of the Cs-137 counting rate can be well controlled within 3.5%. Finally, a full size prototype was tested in comparison with detailed Monte Carlo simulation and the efficiency transfer method was further utilized for efficiency calibration. To reduce the uncertainty in the efficiency transfer process, a standard point source embedded in a graphite sphere was used for efficiency calibration. The correction factor due to pebble self-attenuation was carefully studied.

Abstract:The efficient and accurate burn-up measurement of the spherical fuel element is the key component of the operation of the pebble bed high temperature gas-cooled reactor. The accuracy of the method that determine burnup by the activity of Cs-137 degrades due to operation characteristics of HTR-10. HTR-10,as an test reactor, operated on and off during the past years. It stayed shutdown more than power operation. In order to improve the measurement accuracy of Cs-137 activity and enhance the possibility to detect radionuclides with low activity, which can be used to correct the classic burnup assay method, a new measurement system is now discussed using anti-coincidence technology, which suppresses the Compton plateau. In this paper, Geant4 is used to simulate the anti coincidence measurement process taking high purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometer as main detector and plastic scintillator as the annular detector. By analyzing the signal to noise ratio in different detection scenarios with all kinds of shape parameters of the annular detector, the annular detector with the best anti-coincidence effect are optimaized. The above research results provide an important theoretical basis for the construction of online burn-up measurement system based on anti-Compton technology.

Abstract:As wrapping tools for coupling Monte Carlo (MC) neutron transport code with depletion solver, four different coupling schemes are implemented in Reactor Monte Carlo Code (RMC) developed at Tsinghua University, and verified in two assembly testing cases derived from VERA international benchmark. In this paper, accuracy and time consumption are comparatively analyzed, as well as memory requirement which is significant in large-scale burnup calculation. Results illustrate that beginning of step approximation, as the basic and simplest coupling method, performed with relatively poor accuracy. With nearly the same efficiency, two predictor-corrector methods provide identical accuracy better than the beginning of step approximation, but require different computer memories. High order predictor-corrector combined with sub-step method (HSPC) has the best performance and requires the most memory. By means of hybrid parallelism, domain decomposition and parallel depletion solver in RMC, HSPC is able to be applied in large-scale burnup problem. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:The High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Pebble Bed Reactor (HTG-PBR) is notable in the advanced reactor realm for its online refueling capabilities and inherent safety features. However, the multiphysics coupling nature of HTG-PBR, involving neutronic analysis, pebble flow movement, and thermo-fluid dynamics, creates significant challenges for its development, optimization, and safety analysis. This study focuses on the high-fidelity neutronic modelling and analysis of HTG-PBR with an emphasis on achieving an equilibrium state of the reactor for long-term operations. Computational approaches are developed to perform high-fidelity neutronics analysis by coupling the superior modelling capacities of the Monte Carlo Method (MCM) and Discrete Element Method (DEM). The MCM-based code OpenMC and the DEM-based code LIGGGHTS are employed to simulate the neutron transport and pebble movement phenomena in the reactor, respectively. To improve the computational efficiency to expedite the equilibrium core search process, the reactor core is discretized by grouping pebbles in axial and radial directions with the incorporation of the pebble position information from DEM simulations. The OpenMC model is modified to integrate fuel circulation and fresh fuel loading. All of these measures ultimately contribute to a successful generation of an equilibrium core for HTG-PBR. For demonstration, X-energy's Xe-100 reactor—a 165 MW thermal power HTG-PBR—is used as the model reactor in this study. Starting with a reactor core loaded with all fresh pebbles, the equilibrium core search process indicates the continuous loading of fresh fuel is required to sustain the reactor operation after 1000 days of fuel depletion with depleted fuel circulation. Additionally, the model predicts 213 fresh pebbles are needed to add to the top layer of the reactor to ensure the keff does not reduce below the assumed reactivity limit of 1.01.

Abstract:Monte Carlo method can provide high fidelity neutronics analysis of different types of nuclear reactors, owing to its advantages of the flexible geometry modeling and the use of continuous-energy nuclear cross sections. However, nuclear reactors are complex systems with multi-physics interacting and coupling. MC codes can couple with depletion solver and thermal-hydraulics (T/H) codes simultaneously for the "transport-burnup-thermal-hydraulics" coupling calculations. MIT BEAVRS is a typical "trans port-burnup-thermal-hydraulics" coupling benchmark. In this paper, RMC was coupled with sub channel code COBRA, equipped with on-the-fly temperature-dependent cross section treatment and large-scale detailed burnup calculation based on domain decomposition. Then RMC was applied to the full core burnup calculations of BEAVRS benchmark in hot full power (HFP) condition. The numerical tests show that domain decomposition method can achieve the consistent results compared with original version of RMC while enlarging the computational burnup regions. The results of HFP by RMC agree well with the reference values of BEAVRS benchmark and also agree well with those of MC21. This work proves the feasibility and accuracy of RMC in multi-physics coupling and lifecycle simulations of nuclear reactors. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Burnup Measurement Study and Prototype Development in HTR-PM

Abstract:In a pebble-bed core which employs the multi-pass scheme, it is mandatory to determine the burnup of each pebble after the pebble has been extracted from the core in order to determine whether its design burnup has been reached or whether it has to be reinserted into the core again. The burnup of the fuel pebbles can be determined by measuring the activity of 137Cs with an HPGe detector because of their good correspondence, which is independent of the irradiation history in the core. Based on experiments and Geant4 simulation, the correction factor between the fuel and calibration source was derived by using the efficiency transfer method. By optimizing spectrum analysis algorithm and parameters, the relative standard deviation of the 137Cs activity can be still controlled below 3.0% despite of the presence of interfering peaks. On the foundation of the simulation and experiment research, a complete solution for burnup measurement system in HTR-PM is provided.
Research on Coupling Scheme of Monte Carlo Burnup Calculation in RMC

Abstract:Monte Carlo (MC) burnup calculation method, implemented through coupling neutron transport and point depletion solvers, is widely used in design and analysis of nuclear reactor. Burnup calculation is generally solved by dividing reactor lifetime into steps and modeling geometry into numbers of burnup areas where neutron flux and one group effective cross sections are treated as constant during each burnup step. Such constant approximation for neutron flux and effective cross section will lead to obvious error unless using fairly short step. To yield accuracy and efficiency improvement, coupling schemes have been researched in series of MC codes. In this study, four coupling schemes, beginning of step approximation, predictor-corrector methods by correcting nuclide density and flux-cross section as well as high order predictor-corrector with sub-step method were researched and implemented in RMC. Verification and comparison were performed by adopting assembly problem from VERA international benchmark. Results illustrate that high order coupled with sub-step method is with notable accuracy compared to beginning of step approximation and traditional predictor-corrector, especially for calculation in which step length is fairly long.

Abstract:The real-time and prompt determination of the radioactive level in the primary coolant of the first demonstration high-temperature gas-cooled pebble-bed modular reactor (HTR-PM) in China is essential for establishing its radiation safety since it can reflect the radiological status of the fuel elements in the core. This paper presents the design of the activity concentration measurement of the primary coolant of HTR-PM and focuses on the detection efficiency simulation of the on-line gross gamma monitoring instrument. The purpose of this instrument, which was set in place at the entrance of the helium purification system of HTR-PM, is to provide continuous, real-time, prompt, and reliable activity concentration monitoring of the gaseous fission products in the primary coolant. The Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the detection efficiency of the instrument. Abstract:Modular Pebble-bed HTGR (High-Temperature Gascooled Reactor) employs online HPGe (High Purity Germanium) detector systems to measure the nuclide inventory in spherical fuel elements. The determination of the detector’s DE (Detection Efficiency) curve involves Monte Carlo modeling of the detection system. However, the actual dimension parameters of the HPGe detectors often deviate from the nominal values provided by the manufacturer due to manufacturing limitations and accumulated dead layer growth. Therefore, the calculated DE is subject to systematic errors when the detector model is constructed according to nominal values in Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:To enhance the spectrum quality and allow additional data mining for burnup correction in complex reactor operation history and nuclear material accountancy, a novel burnup measurement system based on anti-compton techniques was created, installed, and tested in the HTR-10 system. The novel burnup measurement system suppressed the compton plateau by a factor of greater than 5 in case of end-cap incidence that did increase the pulse-to-compton ratio from 101 to 532 by single channel spectrometer scheme and from about 103 to 577 by dual channel spectrometer scheme for 661.7 keV of radioactive source of Cs-137. When standard calibration and its extension were finished, the new BUMS were operated for several months with HTR-10 since the second half of 2020. Three irradiated fuel pebbles were discharged out for offline measurement including radiochemical analysis for validation. The result presents very good agreement on measured Cs-137 activity with relative error ranging from around -4.3% to -1.4% when comparing corresponding results of online burnup assay by anticompton BUMS to post irradiated examination by radiochemical analysis. Activities of isotopes were estimated meanwhile to support burnup correction and achieved preliminary satisfying result.

Abstract:The failure fraction of tri-structural isotropic (TRISO)-coated particles in the fuel elements of the core is a key indicator for characterizing the radiation safety of a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) and can be determined from accurate measurement of the activity concentrations of noble gas fission products in the primary coolant. However, in the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor pebble-bed module (HTR-PM), the total γ activity concentration in the primary circuit is currently monitored online without individual nuclide resolution. In this study, an online monitoring instrument based on a HPGe detector is proposed to obtain the activity concentration of individual nuclide in real time. Geant4 simulates detection efficiency, background energy spectrum, and minimum detectable activity concentration (MDAC) of the monitoring system, which are key parameters for evaluating the reliability and feasibility of the system for detecting noble gas fission products. In addition, a method for quickly calculating the MDAC using fitting formulas with low and high precisions is proposed, meeting the accuracy requirements for engineering applications. This study promotes application of online nuclide resolution technology in HTGR for fast assessment of fuel-element performance in the core. The proposed rapid MDAC evaluation method for detection systems can also be applied in nuclear emergency monitoring.
