Abstract:Coke deposition on a submicron ZSM-5 catalyst during ethanol catalytic dehydration in a fix-bed reactor was studied.TG,N2 adsorption-desorption,XRD and NMR techniques were employed to investigate the evolution of coke and its influence on catalyst properties. The experimental results showed that the coke content increased quickly at the beginning and linearly with time on stream afterward. The unsaturated degree of the coke increased with the reaction time and the coke evolved toward polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.Coke formation has little effect on catalyst activity in a short time, and ethanol conversion and ethylene selectivity both were higher than 99% in 410 h reaction. The specific surface area and pore volume of the catalyst decreased sharply due to pore blocking of coke at the beginning of dehydration, and declined slowly over time. The submicron ZSM-5 catalyst transformed from orthorhombic to tetragonal due to the coke formation. The submicron ZSM-5 catalyst suffered severer dealuminization with the time prolong on stream.
