Abstract:In order to know thoroughly about the sex pheromone communication system of the black cutworm,the behavioral response of the male black cutworm moth to synthetic sex pheromone single component Z7-12:Ac(A),Z9-14:Ac(B),Z11-16:Ac(C),Z5-10:Ac(D),Z8-12:Ac(E),different blends and dosages were studied in a wind-tunnel.The results indicated that all single component could only elicit the males,but could not cause them fly to the sex pheromone source.When the lures were baited with the duality compound AB,it could elicit 15.71% of males behave copulatory behavior.At the same dosage,the attracting ability of ternary compound ABC is the biggest,it could elicit 40.58% of males search the sex pheromone source,and 26.15% of males behave copulatory behavior.We use different dosages of ternary compound ABC at its best ratio(3:1:1) to conduct wind-tunnel test and found that males showed the biggest responses to sex pheromone at 100 μg dosages,and 29.87% of males behaved copulatory behavior.The attracting ability of 50 μg dosage was the second,there was not significant difference between them(P≥0.05).
Identification and Characterization of Chemosensory Genes in the Antennal Transcriptome of Spodoptera Exigua

Abstract:Chemical senses are crucial for insect behaviors such as host preference, mate choice and oviposition site selection. Various protein families are involved in these processes, including odorant receptors (ORs), ionotropic receptors (IRs), gustatory receptors (GRs), chemosensory proteins (CSPs), odorant binding proteins (OBPs) and sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs). To better understand the olfactory mechanism in Spodoptera exigua, we conducted transcriptome analysis of adult antennae and identified a total of 157 candidate chemosensory genes encoding 51 ORs, 20 IRs, 7 GRs, 32 CSPs, 45 OBPs and 2 SNMPs. Quantitative real time PCR (qPCR) analysis of the tissue- and sex-specific expression profiles of ORs, GRs and IRs revealed that these genes could be detected in at least one tissue tested. SexiOR6, 11, 13 and 16, which were predicted to be pheromone receptors based on phylogenetic analysis, exhibited male-specific antennae expression. SexiOR18, 26, 28, 30, 34, 39, and 40 exhibited female-biased expression. SexiGR1, SexiGR2 and SexiGR3, are predicted carbon dioxide receptors, and the former was expressed specifically in antennae, and the latter two were expressed both in antennae and labial palps. SexiIRs had diverse expression profiles. SexiIR8a and SexiIR25a were quite conserved and expressed at high levels. This work will greatly facilitate the understanding of olfactory system in S. exigua and provides valuable information for further functional studies of the chemoreception mechanism in Lepidopteran moths.

Abstract:The mass spectrometric behavior of some diene-based sex pheromones of lepidopterous insects, under electron impact ionization conditions, was studied with the aid of mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy spectroscopy and high-resolution data. The similarity of the mass spectra of these dienes and their ability to distinguish double bond positional isomers and geometrical isomers was examined by a 'minimum-maximum' similarity analysis.

Abstract:Abstract The white-spotted flower chafer (WSFC), Protaetia brevit arsis Lewis, is native to East Asia. Although their larvae are considered a potential resource insect for degrading plant residues, producing protein fodder, and processing to traditional medicine, adult WSFCs inflict damage to dozens of fruit and economic crops. The control of the WSFC still relies heavily on pesticides and the inefficient manual extraction of adults. Here, we report the identification and evaluation of the aggregation pheromone of WSFCs. From the headspace volatiles emitted from WSFC adults, anisole, 4-methylanisole, 2-heptanone and 2-nonanone were identified as WSFC-specific components. However, only anisole and 4-methylanisole elicited positive dose–response relationship in electroantennography tests, and only 4-methylanisole significantly attracted WSFCs of both sexes in olfactometer bioassays and field experiments. These results concluded that 4-methylanisole is the aggregation pheromone of WSFCs. Furthermore, we developed polyethylene vials as long-term dispensers of 4-methylanisole to attract and kill WSFCs. The polyethylene vial lures could effectively attracted WSFCs for more than four weeks. Pheromone-based lures can be developed as an environmentally friendly protocol for monitoring and controlling WSFC adults.

Abstract:Sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs), which are located on the dendritic membrane of olfactory neurons, were considered as important components involved in pheromone reception in insects. In Drosophila melanogaster, mutants without SNMP are unable to evoke neuronal activities in the presence of pheromone cis-vaccenyl acetate (cVA). So deeply understanding the SNMPs functions may help to develop pheromone-mediated insect pest management tactics. The present study reports the identification and characterization of CmedSNMP1 and CmedSNMP2, two candidate SNMPs in the rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, one of the serious rice insect pests in Asia. The comparison of amino acid sequences shows that CmedSNMP1 and CmedSNMP2 are very similar to the previously reported SNMPs isolated from moths such as Ostrinia nubilalis and O. furnacalis, respectively, but the two CmedSNMPs share low identity with each other. The distribution patterns of two CmedSNMPs in different tissues of adult moths were examined using RT-PCR and quantitative real-time PCR. Although the two genes are expressed not only in antennae but also in nonolfactory tissues such as wings, legs, and body; the relative transcription level shows both CmedSNMP1 and CmedSNMP2 are highly enriched in antennae. The dN/dS ratios of the two CmedSNMPs indicate that the two genes are all subject to purifying selection and evolved to be functional genes. This work presents for the first time a study on the SNMPs of C. medinalis, which may help in providing guidance to future functional research of moth SNMPs.

Abstract:Background Sex pheromone has proven to be a viable tool for monitoring and controlling pests and has been an important part of integrated pest management (IPM). The noctuid moth Macdunnoughia crassisigna Warren poses a significant threat as a defoliator pest, impacting soybean and cruciferous vegetable production and quality in East Asia. However, the lack of comprehensive knowledge about its sexual chemical signaling hampers the development of semiochemical‐based IPM approaches for M. crassisigna. Results We first determined the mating rhythms of M. crassisigna. We then collected pheromones from the sex glands of virgin females at the mating peak and analyzed their components using gas chromatography‐electroantennogram detection (GC‐EAD) analysis. The results showed that three components elicited significant electrophysiological responses in male antennae. Gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) analysis characterized these components as (Z)‐7‐dodecene acetate (Z7‐12: OAc), (Z)‐9‐tetradecene acetate (Z9‐14: OAc), and (Z)‐11‐hexadecen‐1‐ol (Z11‐16: OH). Further field experiments indicated that the mixture of Z7‐12: OAc and Z9‐14: OAc at a ratio of 3:1 displayed significant attractivity to males, confirming its role as a putative sex pheromone of M. crassisigna. Long‐term monitoring tests showed that traps baited with these pheromone lures effectively mirrored the population dynamics of M. crassisigna. Conclusion This study successfully identified and validated the sex pheromone released by female M. crassisigna and formulated potent sex lures for field‐based pest monitoring. These findings enriched our understanding of chemical communication in Noctuidae and laid a foundation for developing practical monitoring and control methods against M. crassisigna. Abstract:Glyphodes pyloalis Walker, an important pest of mulberries, produce a sex pheromonewhich attracts male moths.1} We report here the purification and identification of the sex pheromone of this species. A bioassay method based on orientation to the pheromone source and copulatory attempts of the male moths was used to monitor the isolation steps.1} Abdominal tips of about 10,000 virgin female moths were extracted with methylene chloride. Preliminary experiments on catalytic hydrogenation, reduction with LiAlH4, saponification and acetylation of the crude extract revealed the sex pheromone to be an acetate of an unsaturated alcohol. After purification by a Florisil column, the sex pheromone was analyzed by a gas-liquid chromatography (GC) with an effluent splitter and a flame ionization detector. On an OV-101 column (programmed temperature from 150 to 300°C at 4°C/min), a material with the pheromoneactivity was recovered from 18.0min to 20.0min and this recovery was located between the retention times of (7Z, 1 lZ)-7, 1 1-hexadecadienyl acetate (17.6min) and (2E913Z)-2,13-octadecadienyl acetate (22.4min). Reidentification of Sex Pheromones of Tea Geometrid Ectropis obliqua Prout (Lepidoptera: Geometridae)

Abstract:Tea geometrid Ectropis obliqua Prout (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is an important defoliator of the tree crop Camellia sinensis L. in China. The sex pheromones of E. obliqua have not been identified, but have potential importance relative to the biological control of this predator. In this study, the female sex pheromones of E. obliqua were identified and evaluated for use in the monitoring and mass trapping of this pest. The sex pheromone extracts were subjected to gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The identified chemicals were synthesized and applied to wind-tunnel tests and field experiments. (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene and 6,7-epoxy-(Z,Z)-3,9-octadecadiene were determined to be the primary sex pheromones produced by the female E. obliqua; the latter elicits the strongest electroantennogram responses from male E. obliqua antennae. However, males did not respond to single components in the wind-tunnel tests. The results of a field-trapping experiment indicated that a 4:6 v/v blend of (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene and 6,7-epoxy-(Z,Z)-3,9-octadecadiene was highly effective in attracting male moths.

Abstract:A full-length cDNA encoding a general odorant binding protein 2 (GOBP2) was cloned from the antennae of the rice striped stem borer, Chilo suppressalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), by the combination of reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends PCR (RACE-PCR). The cDNA contains a 489 bp open reading frame, which encodes a 162 amino acid protein, termed as Ch. suppressalis GOBP2 (CsupGOBP2). CsupGOBP2 is similar in the number of amino acids and protein sequence to GOBP2s in other species of Lepidoptera. RT-PCR results showed that CsupGOBP2 mRNA was highly expressed in the adult antennae of both females and males, as was CsupGOBP2 protein as revealed by Western blot analysis. CsupGOBP2 expressed in Escherichia coli was purified by affinity chromatography, refolding and gel filtration from the inclusion body. Fluorescence emission spectra and competitive binding assays by using N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine as first binding ligand and odorants as potential competitors revealed that the CsupGOBP2 protein has significant affinity to cis-11-hexadecenal (Z11-16:Ald), the main component of Ch. suppressalis pheromone and to laurinaldehyd and benzaldehyde, two general plant volatile aldehydes.
Transcriptomic Identification and Expression Profile Analysis of Odorant-Degrading Enzymes from the Asian Corn Borer Moth, Ostrinia furnacalis

Abstract:The Asian corn borer moth Ostrinia furnacalis is an important lepidopteran pest of maize in Asia. Odorant-degrading enzymes (ODEs), including carboxylesterases (CCEs), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), cytochrome P450s (CYPs), UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs), and aldehyde oxidases (AOXs), are responsible for rapid inactivation of odorant signals in the insect antennae. In this study, we performed a transcriptome assembly for the antennae of O. furnacalis to identify putative ODE genes. Transcriptome sequencing revealed 35,056 unigenes, and 21,012 (59.94%) of these were annotated by searching against the reference sequences in the NCBI non-redundant (NR) protein database. For functional classification, these unigenes were subjected to Gene Ontology (GO), Eukaryotic Orthologous Groups (KOG), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) annotations. We identified 79 genes encoding putative ODEs: 19 CCEs, 17 GSTs, 24 CYPs, 13 UGTs, and 6 AOXs. BLASTX best hit results indicated that these genes shared quite high amino acid identities with their respective orthologs from other lepidopteran species. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR showed that OfurCCE2, OfurCCE5, and OfurCCE18 were enriched in male antennae, while OfurCCE7 and OfurCCE10 were enriched in female antennae. OfurCCE14 and OfurCCE15 were expressed at near-equal amounts in the antennae of both sexes. Our findings establish a solid foundation for future studies aimed at understanding the olfactory functions of these genes in O. furnacalis.

Abstract:Lepidopteran insects use sex pheromones for sexual communication. Pheromone receptors expressed on peripheral olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) are critical part to detect the sex pheromones. In genus Ostrinia, several pheromone receptors were functional analyzed in O. nubilalis and O. scapulalis but the knowledge in O. furnacalis was rare. In this study, seven pheromone receptors were deorphanized by heterologous expression system of Xenopus oocytes. Functional types of sensilla trichoidea were classified by single sensillum recordings to interpret the response pattern of olfactory sensory neurons to Ostrinia pheromone components. OfurOR4 and OfurOR6 responded to the major sex pheromone Z/E12-14:OAc. OfurOR4 is the main receptor for both Z/E12-14:OAc and OfurOR6 mainly responded to E12-14:OAc. Functional differentiation of gene duplication were found between OfurOR5a and OfurOR5b. OfurOR5b showed a broad response to most of the pheromone components in O. furnacalis, whereas OfurOR5a was found without ligands. OfurOR7 showed a specific response to Z9-14:OAc and OfurOR8 mainly responded to Z11-14:OAc and E11-14:OAc. OfurOR3 did not respond to any pheromone components. Our results improved the current knowledge of pheromone reception in Ostrinia species which may contribute to speciation.

Abstract:Effects of maize (Zea mays L.) volatiles induced by larvae of the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), on the orientation behaviors of Asian corn borer larvae and oviposition of the females were investigated. Nineteen volatile chemicals, with terpenes being the major components, were identified from maize plants attacked by third instar Asian corn borer larvae. Coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analyses revealed some electroantennographic differences between female and male Asian corn borer antennae in response to larvae-induced maize volatiles; female responded to (E)-2-hexenal, nonanal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol and three unknown compounds while the male only responded to (E)-2-hexenal, nonanal and one unknown compound. In laboratory orientation bioassays, Asian corn borer neonate larvae were attracted to extracts collected from Asian corn borer-damaged plants as well as to synthetic farnesene, but were repelled by (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol. In laboratory oviposition bioassays, gravid females laid fewer eggs on plants damaged by larvae than on mechanically damaged plants or undamaged plants. Adult Asian corn borer females deposited fewer eggs on wax paper treated with (E)-2-hexenal or (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol than on wax paper treated with hexane (control). The results suggest that Asian corn borer can affect the behaviors of conspecific larvae and adults by changing host plant volatiles.
Identification of Sex Pheromone Components of the Box Tree Pyralid, Glyphodes perspectalis

Abstract:Analysis of ovipositor extracts of the box tree pyralid, Glyphodes perspectalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), by coupled gas chromatography-electroantennogram detection and gas chromatography yielded three candidate pheromone compounds. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and reaction with dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), identified these compounds as (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11-16:Ald), (E)-11-hexadecenal (E11-16:Ald), and (Z)-11-hexadecenol (Z11-16:OH). The ratio of these three compounds in crude extract was 5:1.25:1, and the total amount was approximately 100 ng/female. In laboratory bioassays, Z11-16:Ald alone was attractive to males. In field bioassays, however, Z11-16:Ald alone was not attractive to males, but a mixture of Z11-16:Ald and E11-16:Ald was. The addition of Z11-16:OH to the two aldehydes, significantly reduced attractiveness to male moths in a field trial. From these results, we conclude that the aldehyde compounds comprise the sex pheromone components of G. perspectalis. A rubber septum containing 0.6 mg of the two aldehydes at the natural ratio was an effective lure for monitoring this pest.

Abstract:In this study, we constructed a high-quality cDNA library from the antennae of the Chilo suppressalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). A total of 1,235 colonies with inserts greater than 0.7 kb were sequenced and analyzed. Homology searching coupled with bioinformatics analysis identified 15 and 7 cDNA sequences, respectively, encoding putative odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) and chemosensory proteins (CSPs). A phylogenetic tree of CsupCSPs showed that each CsupCSP has orthologs in Manduca sexta and Bombyx mori with strong bootstrapping support. One CSP was either very specific or more related to the CSPs of another species than to conspecific CSP. The expression profiles of the OBPs and CSPs in different tissues were measured by real-time quantitative PCR. The results revealed that of the 11 OBP genes, the transcript levels of CsupOBP1, CsupOBP5, and CsupOBP7 were higher in both male and female antennae than those in other tissues. And CsupCSP7 was highly expressed in both male and female antennae. Based on these results, the possible physiological functions of CsupOBPs and CsupCSPs were discussed. Identification of a General Odorant Receptor for Repellents in the Asian Corn Borer Ostrinia furnacalis

Abstract:Attractants and repellents are considered to be an environment-friendly approach for pest management. Odorant receptors (ORs), which are located on the dendritic membranes of olfactory sensory neurons in insects, are essential genes for recognizing attractants and repellents. In the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis, ORs that respond to sex pheromones have been characterized, but general ORs for plant odorants, especially for repellents, have not been identified. Nonanal is a plant volatile of maize that could result in avoidance of the oviposition process for female adults in O. furnacalis. In this study, we identified a female-biased OR that responds to nonanal using a Xenopus oocyte expression system. In addition, we found that OfurOR27 was also sensitive to two other compounds, octanal and 1-octanol. Behavioral analysis showed that octanal and 1-octanol also caused female avoidance of oviposition. Our results indicated that OfurOR27 is an OR that is sensitive to repellents. Moreover, the two newly identified repellents may help to develop a chemical ecology approach for pest control in O. furnacalis.

Abstract:BackgroundFemale moths synthesize species-specific sex pheromone components and release them to attract male moths, which depend on precise sex pheromone chemosensory system to locate females. Two types of genes involved in the sex pheromone biosynthesis and degradation pathways play essential roles in this important moth behavior. To understand the function of genes in the sex pheromone pathway, this study investigated the genome-wide and digital gene expression of sex pheromone biosynthesis and degradation genes in various adult tissues in the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella, which is a notorious vegetable pest worldwide.ResultsA massive transcriptome data (at least 39.04 Gb) was generated by sequencing 6 adult tissues including male antennae, female antennae, heads, legs, abdomen and female pheromone glands from DBM by using Illumina 4000 next-generation sequencing and mapping to a published DBM genome. Bioinformatics analysis yielded a total of 89,332 unigenes among which 87 transcripts were putatively related to seven gene families in the sex pheromone biosynthesis pathway. Among these, seven [two desaturases (DES), three fatty acyl-CoA reductases (FAR) one acetyltransferase (ACT) and one alcohol dehydrogenase (AD)] were mainly expressed in the pheromone glands with likely function in the three essential sex pheromone biosynthesis steps: desaturation, reduction, and esterification. We also identified 210 odorant-degradation related genes (including sex pheromone-degradation related genes) from seven major enzyme groups. Among these genes, 100 genes are new identified and two aldehyde oxidases (AOXs), one aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), five carboxyl/cholinesterases (CCEs), five UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs), eight cytochrome P450 (CYP) and three glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) displayed more robust expression in the antennae, and thus are proposed to participate in the degradation of sex pheromone components and plant volatiles.ConclusionsTo date, this is the most comprehensive gene data set of sex pheromone biosynthesis and degradation enzyme related genes in DBM created by genome- and transcriptome-wide identification, characterization and expression profiling. Our findings provide a basis to better understand the function of genes with tissue enriched expression. The results also provide information on the genes involved in sex pheromone biosynthesis and degradation, and may be useful to identify potential gene targets for pest control strategies by disrupting the insect-insect communication using pheromone-based behavioral antagonists.

Identification of genes involved in sex pheromone biosynthesis and metabolic pathway in the Chinese oak silkworm, Antheraea pernyi

Abstract:The Chinese oak silkworm, Antheraea pernyi, has not only been semi-domesticated as an important economical insect but also used for genetic research. The female moths of A. pernyi employ a pheromone blend containing (E,Z)-6,11-hexadecadienal (E6,Z11-16:Ald), (E,Z)-6,11-hexadecadienyl acetate (E6,Z11-16:OAc), and (E,Z)-4,9-tetradecadienyl acetate (E4,Z9-14:OAc). While its biosynthesis pathway is largely unknown. By deep sequencing and de novo assembly of sex pheromone gland (PG) transcriptome, we identified 141 candidate genes that are putatively related to pheromone biosynthesis, degradation, and chemoreception in A. pernyi. Gene expression patterns and phylogenetic analysis revealed that two desaturases (AperDES1 and 2), two fatty acid reductase (AperFAR1 and 2), and three acetyltransferase genes (AperACT1, 2 and 3) showed PG-biased or specific expression and were phylogenetically related to genes known to be involved in pheromone synthesis in other species. Furthermore, two carboxylesterases (AperCOE6 and 11) and two chemosensory protein (AperCSP1 and 6) were also expressed specifically or predominantly in the PGs, which might be related to sex pheromone degradation and transportation, respectively. Based on these results, the sex pheromone biosynthesis and metabolic pathway was proposed in A. pernyi. This study provides some crucial candidates for further functional elucidation, and may be used for interfering sexual communication in other Saturniidae pests.

Abstract:Ectropis obliqua, a notorious tea pest, produces a Type-II sex pheromone blend for mate communication. This blend contains (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-octadecatriene, (Z,Z)-3,9-cis-6,7-epoxy-octadecadiene, and (Z,Z)-3,9-cis-6,7-epoxy-nonadecadiene. To elucidate the genes related to the biosynthesis of these sex pheromone components, transcriptome sequencing of the female E. obliqua pheromone gland and the abdomen without pheromone gland was performed. Comparative RNAseq analyses identified 52 putative genes, including 7 fatty acyl-CoA elongases (ELOs), 9 fatty acyl-CoA reductases (FARs), 1 decarbonylase (DEC), 3 lipophorins (LIPs), and 32 cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs). Tissue expression profiles revealed that two ELOs (ELO3 and ELO5), two FARs (FAR2 and FAR9), one DEC (CYP4G173), and one LIP (LIP1) displayed either abdomen-centric or -specific expression, suggesting potential roles in sex pheromone biosynthesis within the oenocytes of E. obliqua. Furthermore, the tissue expression patterns, combined with phylogenetic analysis, showed that CYP340BD1, which was expressed specifically and predominantly only in the pheromone gland, was clustered with the previously reported epoxidases, highlighting its potential role in the epoxidation of the unsaturated polytriene sex pheromone components. Collectively, our research provides valuable insights into the genes linked to sex pheromone biosynthesis.
Identification of the Configuration of Sex Pheromones with a Conjugated Double Bond by Fuzzy Similarity Analysis of Chemical Shifts of Olefinic Carbons

Abstract:A rapid analytical procedure for identifying the configuration of conjugated dienic sex pheromones and analogous compounds has been developed by fuzzy similarity analysis of 13C-NMR data, in which the chemical shifts of four olefinic carbons were defined as elements of standard parameters for the calculation of the similarity index. The procedure assigns the configuration of the conjugated dienes by comparing similarity of chemical shifts of the olefinic carbons of the samples with those of standard mode configurations (ZZ, EE, ZE, EZ, Z and E). The method was tested with 28 conjugated dienic compounds; the configuration in each diene was correctly identified in all runs without prior assignment of the order of the chemical shifts of the olefinic carbons.
Transcriptome analysis and identification of sex pheromone biosynthesis and transport related genes in Atrijuglans hetaohei (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea)

Abstract:Atrijuglans hetaohei Yang (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea) is one of the major pests that can seriously damage the walnut tree, leading to harvest loss. Sex pheromones regulate mating communication and reproduction in insects and provide targets for developing a novel pest control strategy. In this study, by transcriptomic sequencing and analysis of the female pheromone gland (PG) and male genitalia of A. hetaohei, we identified 92 putative genes, of which 7 desaturases (Dess), 8 fatty acyl reductases (FARs), 4 fatty acid synthetases (FASs), 2 aldehyde oxidases (AOXs), 4 acetyltransferases (ACTs), 1 chemosensory protein (CSP), and 2 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) were predominantly expressed in the female PG, while 5 Dess, 11 FARs, 7 FASs, 6 AOXs, 1 ACT, and 1 CSP showed more robust expression in the male genitalia. Moreover, phylogenetic analysis revealed that 7 Dess and 1 FAR were grouped with genes involved in pheromone synthesis in other Lepidoptera species. Thus, we proposed that these candidate genes are possibly involved in the sex pheromone biosynthetic pathway in A. hetaohei. Our findings will provide a solid genetic basis for further exploring the function of the tissue-biased genes and may be useful to screen potential targets for interfering chemical communication in A. hetaohei.
