Abstract:The process characteristics,rate discharge capability and cycle performance of Li-ion battery prepared by sodium alginate binder were studied. Mechanical properties of sodium alginate were tested. Elastic modulus of sodium alginate improved 100%compared to sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) + styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) system,peel strength of electrode with sodium alginate was improved 30% compared to CMC + SBR system. The electrochemical test showed 2 C rate improved 10%because of lower impedance for cell with sodium alginate.

Abstract:Alginate is a biopolymer extensively utilized in numerous applications. Hydrogel forming property, chemical structure with hydroxyl and carboxylate moieties, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and solubility of alginate in water have broadened up research perspectives in material, and biomedical sciences. Study of alginate-based nanoparticles, nanoaggregates, and nanofibers initiated recently. These materials have gained increased attention for their potential industrial and biomedical applications. The present review broadly describes the synthesis, structural and physicochemical characteristics, recent advancements of processing and functionalization of alginate-based nanomaterials. The potential applications of alginate-based nanomaterials in numerous fields such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, environmental remediation, developing bioanalytical markers, disinfectants, and gene therapy are described. Existing limitations and solutions are underscored with future research scopes. The strategies employed in extracting alginates from algae, fabrication methods of alginate-based nanomaterial, and the commonly used analytical techniques of characterizing nanomaterials are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Synthesis and characterization of sodium alginate from Sargassum aquifolium dan Sargassum cinereum have been successfully performed. S. aquifolium and S. cinereum were collected from the Dompu Islands, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Extraction was performed by acid pathway, due to cell disruption and the addition of Na 2 CO 3 for extraction. The addition of HCl was to convert acid alginate into alginate, then transformed acid alginate into sodium alginate using NaOH. NaOCl and IPA were used for purification. Physicochemical properties were characterized using SEM-EDS, FTIR, and TG/DTG. The morphological structure of synthetic sodium alginate shows layer structure and fiber fibrils. Sodium alginate contained C, O, Na, and Cl elements. FTIR spectrum indicated the presence of functional groups at the following wavelengths: OH at 3343 cm −1 , CH 2 at 2915 cm −1 , CO double bonds at 1614 cm −1 , and fingerprint indicated by the presence of uronic acid, which functioned as the CH group stretched at 935 cm −1 . The sodium alginate sample shows a three-step thermal degradation pattern. The first step was starting at 41.7 °C associated with dehydration and was followed by 206.4 and 241 °C associated with decomposition. TGA/DTG results showed a reduction in thermal stability at 250–300 °C. It is suitable for modification and application.

Abstract:This review article presents past and current alginate-based materials in each application, showing the widest range of alginate's usage and development in the past and in recent years. The first segment emphasizes the unique characteristics of alginates and their origin. The second segment sets alginates according to their application based on their features and limitations. Alginate is a polysaccharide and generally occurs as water-soluble sodium alginate. It constitutes hydrophilic and anionic polysaccharides originally extracted from natural brown algae and bacteria. Due to its promising properties, such as gelling, moisture retention, and film-forming, it can be used in environmental protection, cosmetics, medicine, tissue engineering, and the food industry. The comparison of publications with alginate-based products in the field of environmental protection, medicine, food, and cosmetics in scientific articles showed that the greatest number was assigned to the environmental field (30,767) and medicine (24,279), whereas fewer publications were available in cosmetic (5692) and food industries (24,334). Data are provided from the Google Scholar database (including abstract, title, and keywords), accessed in May 2023. In this review, various materials based on alginate are described, showing detailed information on modified composites and their possible usage. Alginate's application in water remediation and its significant value are highlighted. In this study, existing knowledge is compared, and this paper concludes with its future prospects.

Abstract:With the development of modern industry, heavy metal pollution is one of the most important environmental issues. Due to its simplicity and low-cost, adsorption is considered as a green and environmental friendly method to remove heavy metals from industrial effluents. Sodium alginate is a natural polysaccharide, which consists of abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, has been widely reported as the raw material for the adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. By surface grafting and cross-linking, adsorbents synthesized from sodium alginate have exhibited large uptake capacities as well as high removal rates for heavy metal ions. However, the poor physical strength and plain thermostability have significantly limited the utilization of sodium alginate based materials in industrial applications. Moreover, reductions of specific metal ions were observed in some studies, of which the reduction mechanism is not clearly clarified. In this work, the development of sodium alginate based adsorbents was summarized, including the physicochemical properties of the polymer, the modification of sodium alginate, sodium alginate based composite materials, and the adsorption behaviors as well as the mechanism. Chelation, electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, reduction and photocatalytic reduction were involved in the adsorption process, which can be determined by chemical characterization with further elucidation by density functional theory calculation. Finally, the limitations of sodium alginate based adsorbents were revealed with suggestions for future research.

Abstract:Abstract Alginate is a linear, water-soluble acidic seaweed polysaccharide composed of L-guluronic acid and its C5 epimer D-mannuronic acid, a general term for hydrophilic derivatives of alginic acid. It is widely found in various brown algae. Alginate lyase and its enzymatic hydrolysate have a variety of biological activities and become a new research hotspot. This paper reviews the source, classification, enzymatic mechanism and enzymatic properties of alginate lyase, and summarizes the function and application of alginate lyase and its enzymatic hydrolysate brown algal oligosaccharide, in order to provide a base for the development and application of alginate lyase and its products.

Abstract:Recently, there is a growing research interest in the applications and development of novel sustainable hydrogel materials in waste water treatment because of radically distinctive chemical and physical characteristics of hydrogels such as hydrophilicity, swell ability and modifiability to name a few. Hydrogels have exposed the hypernym functioning in the removal of a wide range of aqueous pollutants containing toxic dyes and heavy metal ions. A large amount of water gets incorporated in the three dimensional networks of hydrophilic structures of hydrogels. The prime objective of this review article is to render a presentation on the recent advances in the modifications of sodium alginate based hydrogels for the adsorptive removal of toxic pollutants. In addition, article also briefly gives the classification and properties of hydrogels and alginate.

Alginate hydrogels have been particularly attractive in wound healing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications to date, as these gels retain structural similarity to the extracellular matrices in tissues and can be manipulated to play several critical roles. This review will provide a comprehensive overview of general properties of alginate and its hydrogels, their biomedical applications, and suggest new perspectives for future studies with these polymers.

Abstract:In recent years, researchers working in biomedical science and technology have investigated alternatives for enhancing the mechanical properties of biomedical materials. In this work, sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel-reinforced nanoparticles (NPs) of hydroxyapatite (HA) were prepared to enhance the mechanical properties of this polymer. Compression tests showed an increase of 354.54% in ultimate compressive strength (UCS), and 154.36% in Young’s modulus with the addition of these NPs compared with pure SA. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the amount of residual water is not negligible and covered a range from 20 to 35 wt%, and the decomposition degree of the alginate depends on the hydroxyapatite content, possibly due to the displacement of sodium ions by the hydroxyapatite and not by calcium chloride. Further, there is an important effect possibly due to the existence of an interaction of hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl of the alginate and the oxygen atoms of the hydroxyapatite, so signals appear upfield in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data. An increase in the accumulation of HA particles was observed with the use of X-ray microtomography, in which the quantified volume of particles per reconstructed volume corresponded accordingly to the increase in the mechanical properties of the hydrogel.

Sodium alginate extracted algae are gaining attention as alternative biopolymer materials. This research aimed to extract and characterize the natrium alginate from three brown algae obtained from Sanur Beach, Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. Alginate extraction was carried out using acid hydrolysis by Na2CO3 with further purification using isopropyl alcohol. Physicochemical characterization was carried out using FT-IR. The results showed that Sargassum aquifolium and Turbinaria ornata had higher yields (%) than Padina australis (P 0.05) in water content, protein content, fat content and pH of the three brown algae. Overall, these three types of brown algae have values ??that are close to the sodium alginate standard set by the Food Chemical Codex (FCC), except for the results of Padina australis in the yield parameter. The functional group Na which is characteristic of sodium alginate is present in all alginate isomers, but there are some functional groups that are still not available in the extraction process in this study based on FT-IR analysis. These findings indicate that sodium alginate extracts from various types of brown algae have specific characteristics as defined by the Food Chemical Codex (FCC) and show great potential to be used as biopolymer materials, especially in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Alginates are natural polysaccharides widely participating in food, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications due to their excellent gelling capacity. Their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability further extend their application to biomedical fields. The low consistency in molecular weight and composition of algae-based alginates may limit their performance in advanced biomedical applications. It makes microbial alginate production more attractive due to its potential for customizing alginate molecules with stable characteristics. Production costs remain the primary factor limiting the commercialization of microbial alginates. However, carbon-rich wastes from sugar, dairy, and biodiesel industries may serve as potential substitutes for pure sugars for microbial alginate production to reduce substrate costs. Fermentation parameter control and genetic engineering strategies may further improve the production efficiency and customize the molecular composition of microbial alginates. To meet the specific needs of biomedical applications, alginates may need functionalization, such as functional group modifications and crosslinking treatments, to achieve enhanced mechanical properties and biochemical activities. The development of alginate-based composites incorporated with other polysaccharides, gelatin, and bioactive factors can integrate the advantages of each component to meet multiple requirements in wound healing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications. This review provided a comprehensive insight into the sustainable production of high-value microbial alginates. It also discussed recent advances in alginate modification strategies and alginate-based composites for representative biomedical applications.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Alginates are salts of alginic acid derived mainly from sea algae of the genus brown algae. They are also synthesized by some bacteria. They belong to negatively charged polysaccharides exhibiting some rheological properties. High plasticity and the ability to modify the structure are the reasons for their application in numerous industries. Moreover, when in contact with the living tissue, they do not trigger an immune response, and for this reason they are the most often tested materials for medical applications. The paper discusses the latest applications, including 3D bioprinting, drug delivery systems, and sorptive properties. Recognizing alginates as biomaterials, it emphasizes the necessity for precise processing and modification to industrialize them for specific uses. This review aims to provide a thorough understanding of the advancements in alginate research, underscoring their potential for innovative applications.

Abstract:Alginate is a naturally occurring polysaccharide polymer having very distinct and useful characteristics feasible across multiple sectors including agriculture, food, textile and pharmaceuticals serves as an emulsifier, film former, thickener, stabilizer, viscosifier, gelling agent, and therapeutic agent. The seaweed Sargassum wightii (Phaeophyceae) sourced from the Gulf of Mannar was utilized to produce sodium alginate. The seaweed underwent treated with five different acids: H2SO4, HCl, CH3COOH, HNO3, and C6H8O7 to achieve the high-quality alginate, with sulfuric acid yielding the highest at 401±13.11 mg/g. The FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopic studies were elucidated the chemical properties of extracted alginates. The FTIR results revealed the presence of -OH, O-C-O, C-OH, and C-H groups in the extracted alginate samples. 1H NMR spectroscopic studies revealed the composition of mannuronic and glucuronic acid residues, with acetic acid accounting for the high M/G ratio of 0.85. Additionally, the DLS spectroscopy was employed to determine the particle size, polydispersity index and scattering index of alginate samples, and TGA analyses revealed that extracted alginate samples exhibit good thermal stability, with citric acid representing the highest.

Abstract:Marine environment is a major potential source of functional materials, including polysaccharides, vitamins, enzymes, oils, antioxidants and peptides. All these materials are extracted from different marine living organisms including microbes, plants and animals. Among these seaweeds or marine macroalgae are one of the important sources and they are a part of staple diet from time immemorial in the orient as they are nutritionally rich materials. Those species that adapted to these pressures will expand their living boundaries and higher potential of row material availability in industry like pharmaceutical market, textile, fertilizer and for animal and human consumption. The present study concerns about the specific brown seaweeds, which is suitable material for alginate and growing abundantly at seacoast of Gujarat. Out of many species of seaweeds growing on the coastline of Veraval, four species viz., Sargassum tenerrimum, Dictyota dichotoma, Spathoglossum asperum, Iyengaria stellata were selected for alginate extraction. The focus of this study is to utilize natural resources as alternatives and sustainability of human health to use sodium alginate as novel polymer and which is also biodegradable. It may be associated to other biologically active molecules and has a wide range of physicochemical and biochemical properties. Because of amazing properties, alginate and its salts are used in drug delivery system.
Extraction and characterisation of sodium alginate from the Southern African seaweed Ecklonia maxima

Abstract:Ecklonia maxima is an endemic South African seaweed with numerous commercially valuable compounds, including sodium alginate. This polysaccharide contains 1,4-linked β- d -mannuronic (M) and α- l -guluronic acid (G) residues, and has enormous health and food applications and benefits for biomedicine. In this study, acid extraction of sodium alginate from Ecklonia maxima was performed, and its chemical and physical properties were compared with commercial sodium alginate. A yield of 58.7 % (w/w of dry alga) sodium alginate was recovered from the seaweed. As expected, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analyses of sodium alginate revealed the presence of M and G residues in the polysaccharide. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy revealed an M/G ratio of 1.86 from the extracted sodium alginate. The viscosity average molecular weight of sodium alginate was 429 kDa using the Mark–Houwink–Sakurada equation. Three-dimensional conformational analysis by Congo red and CD spectroscopy suggested that sodium alginate exhibits a triple-helix conformation in solution. Furthermore, X-ray powder diffraction analysis confirmed that the alginate has an amorphous structure. Sodium alginate extracted from E. maxima found on the coasts of Southern Africa exhibits a high mannuronic content and high viscosity, potentially beneficial for drug delivery and biomedical applications.

Abstract:Alginates have been widely applied and explored in many fields due to their significant advantages. Due to the presence of free hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, alginates can be easily modified by different chemical modification methods. The development and use of chemically modified alginates is one of the hotspots in the field of food science. This paper first summarized the molecular chemical nature of alginates. Then, this paper reviewed the chemical modification methods of alginates. Third, this paper analyzed the product types of chemically modified alginates. Fourth, this work discussed the food application of chemically modified alginates. Finally, this paper provides a summary and outlook of the chemically modified alginates for food research. The chemical modification methods can be classified into five types: ionic complexation with cationic substances, covalent bond modification of the hydroxyl groups, covalent bond modification with the carboxyl groups, step-by-step covalent bond modification, and synergistic modification of covalent bond methods with ionic complexation. The product types are dependent on their roles as minor (emulsions and model foods) or main (foams, fibers, spheres, films, 3D printed scaffolds, and environment-determined hydrogels) components. The food application can be classified into five types: functional active substances, gelling agents, emulsifying agents, materials for food encapsulation, and materials for food packaging and preservation. This paper can guide the research and development of chemically modified alginates for food research.

Abstract:Sodium alginate (SA) is a renewable material with broad application prospects in textiles, medicine, and other fields. However, the disadvantage of poor strength and brittleness limited its future application. In this work, the SA was reinforced by the hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) with a semi-interpenetrating network which leverages the favourable properties. The structure and surface morphology of SA/HPMC blend membranes after Ca ion cross-linking were examined by FTIR, Raman, XRD and SEM. The mechanical properties and water absorbency of the blend membranes were also studied. The results indicated that the hydrogen bond was found in SA/HPMC blend membranes, which improved the SA/HPMC blend membranes stability. Compared with calcium alginate membrane, the tensile strength and elongation at break of SA/HPMC blend membranes were improved to 57 % and 400 %, respectively.

Abstract:As a natural linear polysaccharide, alginate can be gelled into calcium alginate fiber and exploited for functional material applications. Owing to its high hygroscopicity, biocompatibility, nontoxicity and non-flammability, calcium alginate fiber has found a variety of potential applications. This article gives a comprehensive overview of research on calcium alginate fiber, starting from the fabrication technique of wet spinning and microfluidic spinning, followed by a detailed description of the moisture absorption ability, biocompatibility and intrinsic fire-resistant performance of calcium alginate fiber, and briefly introduces its corresponding applications in biomaterials, fire-retardant and other advanced materials that have been extensively studied over the past decade. This review assists in better design and preparation of the alginate bio-based fiber and puts forward new perspectives for further study on alginate fiber, which can benefit the future development of the booming eco-friendly marine biomass polysaccharide fiber.

Abstract:Alginate-based composites have been extensively studied for applications in energy and environmental sectors due to their biocompatible, nontoxic, and cost-effective properties. This review is designed to provide an overview of the synthesis and application of alginate-based composites. In addition to an overview of current understanding of alginate biopolymer, gelation process, and cross-linking mechanisms, this work focuses on adsorption mechanisms and performance of different alginate-based composites for the removal of various pollutants including dyes, heavy metals, and antibiotics in water and wastewater. While encapsulation in alginate gel beads confers protective benefits to engineered nanoparticles, carbonaceous materials, cells and microbes, alginate-based composites typically exhibit enhanced adsorption performance. The physical and chemical properties of alginate-based composites determine the effectiveness under different application conditions. A series of alginate-based composites and their physicochemical and sorptive properties have been summarized. This critical review not only summarizes recent advances in alginate-based composites but also presents a perspective of future work for their environmental applications.

Abstract:Sodium alginate sulfates prepared from sodium alginate through reaction with an uncommon sulfating agent (N (SO3Na)3) which was synthesized by sodium bisulfite and sodium nitrite in aqueous solution. The factors that could affect the degree of substitution (DS) of sodium alginate sulfates were investigated in detail. A sodium alginate sulfate with DS of 1.87 was obtained under optimal conditions. The structures of the derivatives were characterized by FTIR and 13C NMR. FTIR spectra showed the characteristic absorptions of sulfate ester bonds at 1249cm−1 and 873cm−1. The in vitro coagulation assay of human plasma containing the sodium alginate sulfates was determined with respect to activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), thrombin time (TT) and prothombin time (PT). These activities strongly depended on the DS, molecular weight (Mw) and the concentration of sodium alginate sulfates. The introduction of sulfate groups to hydroxyl groups greatly prolonged the APTT and TT. Low S% and concentration sodium alginate sulfates showed little anticoagulant activity. The high DS and concentration could inhibit the activity of IIa and Xa to prolong APTT and TT. The low molecular weight resulted in higher anti-factor Xa activity to promote anticoagulant activity. Generally, the introducing of sulfate groups could not increase PT, it had little effect on coagulation factors in the extrinsic pathway.
