Abstract:In a subject of ‘optical angular momentum (OAM) and optical vortex’, a twisted light (also referred to as a ‘spiralling optical field’) possesses a helical wavefront. Recently, a new advance in the twisted light is Rego et al's discovery of self-torque effect that can cause an intrinsic angular acceleration (DOI:10.1126/science.aaw9486). Such a self-torque effect gives rise to a time-varying optical orbital angular momentum. Then we believe that the time-dependent OAM of this vortex laser beam can lead to non-trivial evolution of the OAM state vector. It is expected that the information on the self-torque of a twisted optical field might be reflected in an extra phase shift and, based on this, we study the possible precession and nutation evolution of a quantized optical orbital angular momentum in such a twisted light. The relevant effects such as non-cyclic non-adiabatic ‘geometric’ phase and dynamical phase due to the angular momentum precession and nutation in the vortex beam are also included. An effective Hamiltonian characterizing the optical vortex precession and nutation is constructed and the time-dependent wave equation is solved. The result obtained in this paper could be utilized in treating the polarization evolution and possible mechanical (force) effect of twisted optical fields that can exhibit the self-torque phenomenon.
Phase-space Analysis for Fractional Fourier Transform of First-Order Optical System

Abstract:The fractional Fourier express of the first-order optical system was derived by decomposing the transfer matrices of first-order optical system into coordinate rotation matrix,scale matrix and chirp matrix in Wigner phase space.The results show that an arbitrary first-order optical system can be expressed as the scaled and chirp modulation fractional Fourier transform.The transfer matrix and diffractive integral formula in frequency domain were acquired by rotating the input and output optical field π/2 in the phase space.Accordingly the fractional Fourier transforms of a first-order optical system in frequency domain were also obtained.By comparing the transfer matrices of two first-order optical systems in space and frequency domains respectively, it is found that the two first-order optical systems in different domain can be expressed as two different expressions of one and the same transfer based on different coordinates.At last the condition is derived for an optical system to implement the fractional Fourier transform in space and frequency domains with the same order.

Abstract:The idea of fractional derivatives has a long history that dates back centuries. Apart from their intriguing mathematical properties, fractional derivatives have been studied widely in physics, for example in quantum mechanics and generally in systems with nonlocal temporal or spatial interactions. However, systematic experiments have been rare due to challenges associated with the physical implementation. Here we report the observation and full characterization of a family of temporal optical solitons that are governed by a nonlinear wave equation with a fractional Laplacian. This equation has solutions with unique properties such as non-exponential tails and a very small time-bandwidth product.

Fractional Revivals in Elliptical Atomtronics

Abstract:Fractional revivals are recently reported for circular atomtronics, but get disturbed for a nonzero eccentricity of the waveguide geometry. Here, we provide a mechanism for the elliptical atomtronics with arbitrary eccentricity to restore fractional revivals. The uniform ground state of the circular waveguide becomes nonuniform in the elliptical geometry. An appropriate dispersion management can bring back the uniformity and we use the overlap function numerically to identify the corresponding dispersion coefficients, which match our proposed analytical formula. The fact that the cloud spends mostly along the semimajor edges, is demonstrated by the survival function. The said dispersion management recovers the desired fractional revivals patterns, where the revival time-scale becomes independent of the eccentricity. The present method paves the way also to observe other known phenomena of circular atomtronics in elliptical atomtronics.

Abstract:The fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) naturally exists in the strongly nonlocal nonlinear (SNN) media and the propagation of optical beams in SNN media can be simply regarded as a self-induced FRFT. Through FRFT technic the evolution of fields in SNN media can be conveniently dealt with and an arbitrary square-integrable input field presents generally as a revivable higher order spatial soliton which reconstructs its profile periodically after every 4 times of Fourier transforms. The self-induced FRFT would illuminate the prospect of the SNN media in new applications such as continuously tunable nonlinearity-induced FRFT devices.

Fractional Revivals, Multiple-Cat States and Quantum Carpets in the Interaction of a Qubit with $N$ Qubits

Abstract:We study the dynamics of a system comprising a single qubit interacting equally with $N$ qubits (a "spin star" system). Although this model can be solved exactly, the exact solution does not give much intuition for the dynamics of the model. Here, we find an approximation that gives some insight into the dynamics for a particular class of initial spin coherent states of the $N$ qubits. We find an effective Hamiltonian for the system that is a finite Kerr (one-axis twisting) Hamiltonian for the $N+1$ qubits. The initial spin coherent state evolves to spin squeezed states on short timescales, and to "multiple-cat" states (superpositions of many spin coherent states) on longer timescales, a manifestation of the phenomenon of fractional revivals of the initial state. The evolution of the system is visualised with phase space plots ($Q$-functions) that, when plotted against time, reveal a "quantum carpet" pattern. Of particular interest is the fact that our approximation captures the qualitative features of the model even for small values of $N$. This suggests the possibility of observing the phenomenon of fractional revival in this model for systems of few qubits.

Abstract:The mysterious phenomena of revivals in linear dispersive periodic equations was discovered first experimentally in optics in the 19th century, then rediscovered several times by theoretical and experimental investigations. While the term has been used systematically and consistently by many authors, there is no consensus on a rigorous definition. In this paper, we describe revivals modulo a regularity condition in a large class of Schrödinger's equations with complex bounded potentials. As we show, at rational times the solution is given explicitly by finite linear combinations of translations and dilations of the initial datum, plus an additional continuous term.

Abstract:The dynamics of wave packets in the fractional Schrödinger equation is still an open problem. The difficulty stems from the fact that the fractional Laplacian derivative is essentially a nonlocal operator. We investigate analytically and numerically the propagation of optical beams in the fractional Schrödinger equation with a harmonic potential. We find that the propagation of one- and two-dimensional input chirped Gaussian beams is not harmonic. In one dimension, the beam propagates along a zigzag trajectory in real space, which corresponds to a modulated anharmonic oscillation in momentum space. In two dimensions, the input Gaussian beam evolves into a breathing ring structure in both real and momentum spaces, which forms a filamented funnel-like aperiodic structure. The beams remain localized in propagation, but with increasing distance display an increasingly irregular behavior, unless both the linear chirp and the transverse displacement of the incident beam are zero.

Abstract:The generation and manipulation of optical vortices are of fundamental importance in a variety of promising applications. Here, we develop a nonlinear optical paradigm to implement self- and cross-convolution of optical vortex arrays, demonstrating the features of a vortex copier and regenerator. We use a phase-only spatial light modulator to prepare the 1064 nm invisible fundamental light to carry special optical vortex arrays and use a potassium titanyl phosphate crystal to perform type II second-harmonic generation in the Fourier domain to achieve 532 nm visible structured vortices. Based on pure cross-convolution, we succeed in copying arbitrary-order single vortices as well as their superposition states onto a prearranged array of fundamental Gaussian spots. Also, based on the simultaneous effect of self- and cross-convolutions, we can expand the initial vortex lattices to regenerate more vortices carrying various higher topological charges. Our presented method of realizing an optical vortex copier and regenerator could find direct applications in optical manipulation, optical imaging, optical communication, and quantum information processing with structured vortex arrays.
Experimental Generation of Complex Optical Fields for Diffraction Limited Optical Focus with Purely Transverse Spin Angular Momentum.

Abstract:We demonstrate a method to generate complex optical fields at the pupil plane of a high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens for the creation of diffraction limited optical focus with purely transverse spin angular momentum. The complex optical fields are analytically deduced through reversing the radiated patterns from two electric dipoles, which are located at the focal point of the high NA lens and oscillate respectively in x- and z- directions with phase difference of π/2. The derived fields can be experimentally created with a vectorial optical field generator. Using the Richard-Wolf vectorial diffraction theory, the electric fields within the focal region are calculated to evaluate the intensities and polarization distributions of the tightly focused beams corresponding to both the theoretical and experimentally generated pupil fields and the results clearly demonstrate the validity of the proposed technique.

Abstract:The phenomenon of quantum revivals resulting from the self-interference of wave packets has been observed in several quantum systems and utilized widely in spectroscopic applications. Here, we present a combined analytical and numerical study on the generation of orientational quantum revivals (OQRs) exclusively using a single-cycle THz pulse. As a proof of principle, we examine the scheme in the linear polar molecule HCN with experimentally accessible pulse parameters and obtain strong field-free OQR without requiring the condition of the sudden-impact limit. To visualize the involved quantum mechanism, we derive a three-state model using the Magnus expansion of the time-evolution operator. Interestingly, the THz pulse interaction with the electric-dipole moment can activate direct multiphoton processes, leading to OQR enhancements beyond that induced by a rotational ladder-climbing mechanism from the rotational ground state. This work provides an explicit and feasible approach toward quantum control of molecular rotation, which is at the core of current research endeavors with potential applications in atomic and molecular physics, photochemistry, and quantum information science.

Abstract:Some developments on fractional Fourier optics are reported in this paper. First, a thick lens can be regarded as a fractional Fourier transformer. Second, relations between the Collins formulae and the fractional Fourier transform or fractional Hankel transform are bridged, we show that the Collins formulae in spatial domain or in spatial-frequency domain can be described by the fractional Fourier transform or fractional Hankel transform. Third, connections between the multi-element resonators and the scaled fractional Fourier transforms are established, it is shown that there exists twice scaled fractional Fourier transform for beams in completing one round trip, the beam oscillation in resonator can be viewed as a process of consecutive implementing scaled fractional Fourier transform. Finally, some extensions of the fractional Fourier transforms to misaligned optical systems are simply reviewed.

Abstract:We investigate the generation of fractional-period states in continuum periodic systems. As an example, we consider a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an optical-lattice potential. We show that when the potential is turned on nonadiabatically, the system explores a number of transient states whose periodicity is a fraction of that of the lattice. We illustrate the origin of fractional-period states analytically by treating them as resonant states of a parametrically forced Duffing oscillator and discuss their transient nature and potential observability.

Exact quantum revivals for the Dirac equation

Abstract:In the present work, the results obtained in [1] about the revivals of a relativistic fermion wave function on a torus are considerably enlarged. In fact, all the possible quantum states exhibiting revivals are fully characterized. The revivals are exact, that is, are true revivals without taking any particular limit such as the non relativistic one. The present results are of interest since they generalize the Talbot effect and the revivals of the Schrödinger equation to a relativistic situation with non zero mass. This makes the problem nontrivial, as the dispersion relation is modified and is not linear. The present results are obtained by the use of arithmetic tools which are described in certain detail. In addition, several plots of the revivals are presented, which are useful for exemplifying the procedure proposed along the text.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. In this paper, the fractional Schrödinger equation is described with beta derivative, which is used to elucidate the dynamic interaction of ultra-short pulses with quantum properties in optical fibers. This work is to study the solitary wave and periodic solutions of the fractional Schrödinger equation by employing three powerful and simple mathematical approaches like fractional Kudryashov method, fractional cosine–sine method and fractional tanh function method. The acquired outcomes illustrate that the proposed three computational approaches are simple, efficient, concise and can be adopted to study more complex phenomena. Finally, the dynamical behavior of these acquired solitary wave solutions is illustrated by sketching some 3D figures with proper parameters.

Vanishing and Revival of Resonance Raman Scattering

Abstract:The possibility to manipulate quantum coherence and interference, apart from its fundamental interest in quantum mechanics, is essential for controlling nonlinear optical processes such as high harmonic generation, multiphoton absorption, and stimulated Raman scattering. We show, analytically and numerically, how a nonlinear optical process via resonance Raman scattering (RRS) can be manipulated in a four-level double-Λ system by using pulsed laser fields. We find that two simultaneously excited RRS paths involved in the system can generate an ultimately destructive interference in the broad-bandwidth-limit regime. This, in turn, reduces the four-level system to an equivalent three-level system in a V configuration capable of naturally vanishing RRS effects. We further show that this counterintuitive phenomenon, i.e., the RRS vanishing, can be prevented by transferring a modulated phase of the laser pulse to the system at resonance frequencies. This work demonstrates a clear signature of both quantum destructive and constructive interference by actively controlling resonant multiphoton processes in multilevel quantum systems, and it therefore has potential applications in nonlinear optics, quantum control, and quantum information science.

Abstract:Recently, the optical vortex (OV) has gained increasing interest since the potential for applications of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by optical vortex beams. However, generation is currently limited single static cricular intensity profile, greatly constraining the breadth of achievable spatiotemporal dynamics. Here, we propose a novel phase distribution to generate a dynamic propagation OV with a customized topological charge (TC ≥ 10) based on Fibonacci series annular subzone by tailoring the local phase gradient along the azimuthal direction. We describe the generation of the Fibonacci series annular subzone vortex phase. The Fibonacci vortex beam (FVB) have customization TC, multi-singularity intensity distributions. Furthermore, such optical fields exhibit the spatial dynamic rotation and self-focusing have yielded fascinating phenomena. The simulation results are agreed with the experimental results, which provides an important basis for the generation of OV with spatial dynamic propagation. These results contribute to the advanced complex light manipulation with spatial dynamic propagation and pave the way to achieve a new laser with the structured light based on modified phase control.
