Abstract:The idea of fractional derivatives has a long history that dates back centuries. Apart from their intriguing mathematical properties, fractional derivatives have been studied widely in physics, for example in quantum mechanics and generally in systems with nonlocal temporal or spatial interactions. However, systematic experiments have been rare due to challenges associated with the physical implementation. Here we report the observation and full characterization of a family of temporal optical solitons that are governed by a nonlinear wave equation with a fractional Laplacian. This equation has solutions with unique properties such as non-exponential tails and a very small time-bandwidth product.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problems of experimental observation and characterization of fractional - order evolution phenomena in nonlinear optics. Specifically, the research team successfully generated and comprehensively characterized a class of temporal optical solitons described by the fractional Laplacian operator by realizing a specific dispersion relation in fiber lasers and combining the Kerr nonlinear effect. These solitons have unique properties, such as non - exponentially decaying tails and very small time - bandwidth products. ### Core problems of the paper 1. **Experimental realization of fractional - order diffraction phenomena**: - The research team achieved the experimental observation of optical solitons described by the fractional - order nonlinear wave equation for the first time. These solitons are described by the Hilbert - Nonlinear Schrödinger equation (Hilbert - NLS equation) containing the fractional Laplacian operator. 2. **Unique properties of solitons**: - These solitons have discontinuous spectral derivatives, resulting in non - exponentially decaying characteristics in their temporal behavior. - Their time - bandwidth products are very small, much smaller than those of traditional solitons. - The energy of solitons is independent of their peak power or width, indicating that they are in a critically stable state. 3. **Experimental methods and techniques**: - By programming to introduce a specific dispersion relation in fiber lasers, the research team was able to generate these fractional - order solitons. - A Frequency - Resolved Electro - Gating (FREG) device was used to perform detailed measurements of the time, phase, and spectrum of the generated solitons. ### Main contributions - **Experimental verification**: For the first time, the existence of optical solitons described by the fractional - order nonlinear wave equation was experimentally verified, and their properties were comprehensively characterized. - **Consistency between theory and experiment**: The experimental results are highly consistent with numerical simulations and theoretical predictions, further verifying the correctness and applicability of the fractional - order nonlinear wave equation. - **Potential applications**: These results are not only of great significance in the field of nonlinear optics but also provide new experimental means and theoretical bases for research in other fields of physics and applied mathematics. ### Conclusion This paper experimentally observes and characterizes a class of temporal optical solitons described by the fractional Laplacian operator, shows the unique properties of these solitons, and verifies the correctness of the relevant theoretical models. These results lay the foundation for similar experiments in quantum mechanics and other fields of physics in the future.
