Abstract:We demonstrate a wavelength-dependent spatial lateral beam shift of a reflective Gaussian beam on the surface of multilayer thin-film coatings. Numerical analysis of the behavior of a Gaussian-form light beam incident on the surface of the coatings is performed. The theoretical analysis is for a two-dimensional light sheet. The spatial lateral beam dispersion can be determined rigorously from the numerical wave field in the region of the incident medium. The coatings present a spatial dispersion effect much larger than in previous reports. The thin-film coatings can act not only as positive spatial dispersion devices but in a proper case, also as negative spatial dispersion devices. As such, the devices produce a wavelength-dependent negative lateral shift of the reflective beam. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:The local field contribution to some three‐ and four‐level coherent atomic vapors is considered, and a significant modification to optical properties due to dipole‐dipole interaction between neighboring atoms is discussed. It is found that the local field effect can reduce loss of a four‐level N‐type vapor medium at the resonant frequency in both the steady and transient cases. In order to achieve a left‐handed medium with a negative refractive index, a scenario to realize simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability inside a mixed coherent atomic vapor by using quantum coherence effect is suggested. One of the remarkable features of the present scheme is such that it can lead to a controllable manipulation of negative refractive index of an atomic vapor by using external coupling and signal fields. This may be a new scheme to fabricate the negatively refracting materials based on quantum optical approach.
Modelling nonlinear optical effects in guest-host systems

Abstract:We briefly outline a modelling strategy, combining quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics simulations, for obtaining macroscopic nonlinear optical coeffcients in guest-host systems like chromophores in solutions or in polymer matrices. The parameters required for the calculation of the macroscopic nonlinear optical property, like the chromophore number density, local field factors, and the order parameter of the chromophore molecules, are derived. These parameters, together with the molecular first hyperpolarizabilities, obtained from quantum chemistry calculations, are used to estimate the macroscopic electro-optic coeffcients. The combined approach leads to some new conclusions about the relation of the chromophore property and its solvent interactions in order to optimize the nonlinear optical coeffcient. For instance, from the simulation results a totally different notion is derived about the collective properties of octupolar molecules. We find that such molecules receive a solvent induced dipole moment that makes it possible to pole them by an external electric field, but also that they can aggregate as an effect of this solvent interaction.

Abstract:We investigate the linear and nonlinear optical responses of dilute anisotropic networks using Green's function formalism [Gu Y et al 1999 Phys. Rev. B 59 12847]. For different applied fields, numerical calculations indicate that a large third-order nonlinear enhancement and a broad infrared absorption arise from the geometric anisotropy. We also show the overlap and separation between the absorption peak and nonlinear enhancement peak when the applied field is parallel and perpendicular to the anisotropy, respectively. The results can be understood in terms of the inverse participation ratios with q = 2 and the spectral distribution of optical responses.

Abstract:The optical conductivity is the basic defining property of materials characterizing the current response toward time-dependent electric fields. In this work, following the approach of Kubo's response theory, we study the general properties of the nonlinear optical conductivities of quantum many-body systems both in equilibrium and non-equilibrium. We obtain an expression of the second- and the third-order optical conductivity in terms of correlation functions and present a perturbative proof of the generalized Kohn formula proposed recently. We also discuss a generalization of the $f$-sum rule to a non-equilibrium setting by focusing on the instantaneous response.

Lightest sterile neutrino abundance within the nuMSM

Abstract:We determine the abundance of the lightest (dark matter) sterile neutrinos created in the Early Universe due to active-sterile neutrino transitions from the thermal plasma. Our starting point is the field-theoretic formula for the sterile neutrino production rate, derived in our previous work [JHEP 06(2006)053], which allows to systematically incorporate all relevant effects, and also to analyse various hadronic uncertainties. Our numerical results differ moderately from previous computations in the literature, and lead to an absolute upper bound on the mixing angles of the dark matter sterile neutrino. Comparing this bound with existing astrophysical X-ray constraints, we find that the Dodelson-Widrow scenario, which proposes sterile neutrinos generated by active-sterile neutrino transitions to be the sole source of dark matter, is only possible for sterile neutrino masses lighter than 3.5 keV (6 keV if all hadronic uncertainties are pushed in one direction and the most stringent X-ray bounds are relaxed by a factor of two). This upper bound may conflict with a lower bound from structure formation, but a definitive conclusion necessitates numerical simulations with the non-equilibrium momentum distribution function that we derive. If other production mechanisms are also operative, no upper bound on the sterile neutrino mass can be established.

Regularized lattice theory for spatially dispersive nonlinear optical conductivities

Abstract:Nonlinear optical responses are becoming increasingly relevant for characterizing the symmetries and quantum geometry of electronic phases in materials. Here, we develop an expanded diagrammatic scheme for calculating spatially dispersive corrections to nonlinear optical conductivities, which we expect to enhance or even dominate even-order responses in materials of recent interest. Building upon previous work that enforces gauge invariance of spatially uniform nonlinear optical responses, we review the cancellation of diagrams required to ensure the equivalence between velocity gauge and length gauge formulations, and provide a simple vertex rule for extending optical responses to first order in the light wave vector q. We then demonstrate the method with calculations on a prototypical centrosymmetric model where spatial dispersion admits anomalous secondharmonic generation, a response that is symmetry-forbidden under the dipole approximation.

Abstract:We study a recent experiment [K. Li et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 250401 (2008)] on diffracting a BoseEinstein condensate by two counterpropagating optical fields. Including the local-field effect, we explain the asymmetric momentum distribution and self-imaging of the Bose-Einstein condensate self-consistently. Moreover, we find that the two counterpropagating optical fields could not produce a perfect optical lattice, which is actually deformed by the local-field effect. Our work implies that the local-field effect could be essential for getting a better quantitative analysis of other optical lattice experiments. In particular, the intensity imbalance of the two optical fields could act as a new means to tailor both cold atom dynamics and light propagation.

Abstract:In the present work, the authors evaluate a scheme based on molecular dynamics to derive local field factors. These are given without any assumption of a cavity by fitting the Langevin functions to the order parameters obtained from the molecular dynamics simulations. The local field factors so obtained, with the detailed chromophore-solvent interactions and solvent structures taken into account, are much smaller than those calculated from the conventional Onsager and Lorentz models. A numerical demonstration is given for two typical organic chromophore molecules, p-nitroaniline and p-nitro-N,N-dimethylaniline dissolved in chloroform. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.
Adding Corrections to Global Spherical Potentials for Use in a Coupled-Channel Formulation

Abstract:The coupled-channel technique augments a non-relativistic distorted wave born approximation scattering calculation to include a coupling to virtual states from the negative energy region. It has been found to be important in low energy nucleon-nucleus scattering. We modify the nucleon-nucleus standard optical potentials, not designed for a coupled-channel space, so they can be used in that setting. The changes are small and systematic. We use a standard scattering code to adjust a variety of optical potentials and targets such that the original fit to scattering observables are maintained as we incorporate the coupled-channel environment. Overall over forty target nuclei were tested from $A=12$ to $A=205$ and nucleon projectile energies from 1 MeV to 200 MeV. There is excellent improvement in fitting the scattering observables, especially for low energy neutron scattering.The corrections were found to be unimportant for projectile energies greater than 200 MeV. The largest changes are to the surface amplitudes while the real radii and the real central amplitude are modified by only a few percent, every other parameter is unchanged. This technique is general enough to be applied to a variety of inelastic theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Abstract Based on ab initio software packages using nonorthogonal localized orbitals, we develop a general scheme of calculating response functions. We test the performance of this method by calculating nonlinear optical responses of materials, like the shift current conductivity of monolayer WS 2 , and achieve good agreement with previous calculations. This method bears many similarities to Wannier interpolation, which requires a challenging optimization of Wannier functions due to the conflicting requirements of orthogonality and localization. Although computationally heavier compared to Wannier interpolation, our procedure avoids the construction of Wannier functions and thus enables automated high throughput calculations of linear and nonlinear responses related to electrical, magnetic and optical material properties.

Abstract:Wannier interpolation is an efficient and useful method widely used in modern first-principles materials calculations, which typically demands orthogonal and localized Wannier basis functions. The optimization of Wannier functions, however, is a challenging task due to the conflicting requirements of orthogonality and localization. In this work, we extend the Wannier interpolation scheme to accommodate the usage of nonorthogonal localized orbitals. The generalized method can be easily applied as a post processing procedure for various ab initio calculation codes using localized orbitals. We test the performance of this method by calculating nonlinear optical responses of materials, like the shift current conductivity of monolayer WS$_2$, and achieve good agreement with previous calculations. In no need of optimizing Wannier functions, our method enables automated high throughput calculations of response functions and other materials properties.

Abstract:A finite difference method in real space is presented for calculating nonlinear optical processes in two-dimensional optical superlattices. The focused second-harmonic generation under the local quasi-phase-matched condition is calculated as an example. The field distribution of both the fundamental and the harmonic wave can be simulated well using this method, and the result agrees well with previous theoretical predictions and experimental studies. It is shown that this method is a simple and rapid technique to analysis nonlinear processes in optical superlattices.
Correction of local-linear elasticity for nonlocal residuals: Application to Euler-Bernoulli beams

Abstract:Complications exist when solving the field equation in the nonlocal field. This has been attributed to the complexity of deriving explicit forms of the nonlocal boundary conditions. Thus, the paradoxes in the existing solutions of the nonlocal field equation have been revealed in recent studies. In the present study, a new methodology is proposed to easily determine the elastic nonlocal fields from their local counterparts without solving the field equation. This methodology depends on the iterative-nonlocal residual approach in which the sum of the nonlocal fields is treaded as a residual field. Thus, in this study the corrections of the local-linear elastic fields for the nonlocal residuals in materials are presented. These corrections are formed based on the general nonlocal theory. In the context of the general nonlocal theory, two distinct nonlocal parameters are introduced to form the constitutive equations of isotropic-linear elastic continua. In this study, it is demonstrated that the general nonlocal theory outperforms Eringen-nonlocal theory in accounting for the impacts of the material Poisson ratio on its mechanics. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the corrections of the local static bending, vibration, and buckling characteristics of Euler-Bernoulli beams are derived. Via these corrections, bending, vibration, and buckling behaviors of simple-supported nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beams are determined without solving the beams equation of motion.

Abstract:The correction vector technique for obtaining dynamic nonlinear optical (NLO) coefficients is extended to semi-empirical CI schemes; The technique is established by comparison with full sums over states (SOS) computations on a small system. Comparison of the results of a truncated SOS method and the full-space NLO coefficients from the correction vector method in a CI space of 1347 configurations shows that the SOS technique with 50 excited states for para-nitroaniline gives reliable alpha and beta values, but the gamma value is off by more than a factor of 2 for the dominant components. The correction vector technique, besides being exact in the chosen Ct space, is also computationally more efficient than the truncated SOS technique.

Abstract:We investigate the physical origins of the surface nonlinear susceptibility responsible for surface optical second-harmonic generation. Experiments performed on simple covalent systems were designed to distinguish between the nonlocal electric-quadrupole-type nonlinearity induced by field discontinuity and the local intrinsic, electric-dipole-type nonlinearity of a surface or interface. We find that both mechanisms could operate: The latter usually dominates when the surface layer has a strong structural asymmetry with the fundamental or the second-harmonic frequency at resonance with a dipole-allowed transition.

Abstract:Non-paraxial perturbation wave equations are solved for general astigmatic Gaussian beams for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, in the angular spectrum representation by taking into account generic boundary conditions. Expressions for second-order corrections are derived and exemplified with an optical cavity made of two cylindrical mirrors. Non-paraxial corrections can lead, depending on the choice of boundary conditions, to a transverse S-shaped beam mode, which has been qualitatively been observed in a highly divergent non-planar four-mirror cavity.

Abstract:A numerical scheme is presented to solve the nonlinear Helmholtz (NLH) equation modeling second-harmonic generation (SHG) in photonic bandgap material doped with a nonlinear χ((2)) effect and the NLH equation modeling wave propagation in Kerr type gratings with a nonlinear χ((3)) effect in the one-dimensional case. Both of these nonlinear phenomena arise as a result of the combination of high electromagnetic mode density and nonlinear reaction from the medium. When the mode intensity of the incident wave is significantly strong, which makes the nonlinear effect non-negligible, numerical methods based on the linearization of the essentially nonlinear problem will become inadequate. In this work, a robust, stable numerical scheme is designed to simulate the NLH equations with strong nonlinearity.

Abstract:A novel strategy is introduced in order to include variations of the nonlinearity into the nonlinear schrodinger Equation. This technique, which relies on renormalization, is in particular well adapted to nanostructured optical systems where the nonlinearity exhibits large variations up to two orders of magnitude larger than in bulk material. We show that it takes into account in a simple and efficient way the specificity of the nonlinearity in nanostructures that is determined by geometrical parameters like the effective mode area and the group index. The renormalization of the nonlinear schrodinger Equation is the occasion for physics oriented considerations and unveils the potential of Photonic Crystal waveguides for the study of new nonlinear propagation phenomena.

Quasi-normal mode approach to the local-field problem in quantum optics

Abstract:The local-field (LF) problem of a finite-size dipole emit- ter radiating inside a lossy inhomogeneous structure is a long-standing and challenging quantum optical problem, and it now is becoming more important due to rapid advances in solid-state fabrication technologies. Here we introduce a simple and accurate quasi-normal mode (QNM) technique to solve this problem analyti- cally by separating the scattering problem into contribu- tions from the QNM and an image dipole. Using a real- cavity model to describe an artificial atom inside a lossy and dispersive gold nanorod, we show when the contri- bution of the QNM to LFs will dominate over the homo- geneous contribution. We also show how to accurately describe surface scattering for real cavities that are close to the metal interface and explore regimes when the surface scattering dominates. Our results offer an intui- tive picture of the underlying physics for the LF problem and facilitate the understanding of novel photon sources within lossy structures.
