Abstract:The optical conductivity is the basic defining property of materials characterizing the current response toward time-dependent electric fields. In this work, following the approach of Kubo's response theory, we study the general properties of the nonlinear optical conductivities of quantum many-body systems both in equilibrium and non-equilibrium. We obtain an expression of the second- and the third-order optical conductivity in terms of correlation functions and present a perturbative proof of the generalized Kohn formula proposed recently. We also discuss a generalization of the $f$-sum rule to a non-equilibrium setting by focusing on the instantaneous response.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper discusses the universality of nonlinear optical conductivity, focusing on the response of quantum many-body systems in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium states. The study is based on Kubo's response theory and obtains expressions for the second and third-order optical conductivity, as well as perturbative proof of the recently proposed generalized Kohn formula. In addition, the possibility of extending the f-sum rule to non-equilibrium states is discussed, particularly its application in transient responses. The main achievements of the paper include providing a compact form of the f-sum rule for arbitrary order nonlinear optical conductivity and non-equilibrium states, as well as proof of the nonlinear Kohn formula.
