Abstract:The chemical constituents in Shenmai Injection(SMI) were qualitatively analyzed by using liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry(LC-Q-TOF-MS) and liquid chromatography-ion trap-mass spectrometry(LC-IT-MS). The analysis was performed on an Agilent Zorbax SB-C_(18)(4.6 mm×250 mm, 5 μm) and gradient elution was carried out with 0.05% formic acid solution-acetonitrile as mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.6 mL·min~(-1) and a column temperature of 30 ℃. Mass spectrometry data of the components in SMI were collected in negative ion mode. The structures of components were speculated and identified by analyzing mass spectrometry data, comparing with standards, and referring to related literature. A total of 64 components in SMI were estimated, and the structures were confirmed in 16 of them by comparison with standards. Fifty-six compounds derived from Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma Rubra included 34 protopanaxadiol ginsenosides, 19 protopanaxatriol ginsenosides, 1 oleanane ginsenosides and 2 other glycosides. Eight compounds derived from Ophiopogonis Radix included 7 steroidal saponins, and 1 monoterpene glycoside. The results of this study would provide an important theoretical basis for the improvement of the quality control standards and the discovery of effective constituents in SMI.

Abstract:Cannabis sativa L. is one of the oldest plants used for medicine because of its numerous natural constituents. From the 1960s to the present, a total of 565 constituents have been reported from Cannabis sativa L., which could be classified into two types: phytocannabinoids and non-cannabinoids. These active constituents are responsible for analgesic, anti-tumor, anti-nausea and vomiting, treatment and brain disease, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, etc. However, the pharmacological mechanism was gradually revealed in the past 50 years, and still need further study. In this paper, we present a general overview of chemical constituents in Cannabis sativa L., biosynthetic pathways of cannabinoids and key enzymes involved, techniques of determining cannabinoids, and the main potential (or established) therapeutic uses of some cannabis-related drugs, to provide reference for pharmacology and therapeutic potential of Cannabis sativa L..
[Antitumor effect research progress of shikonin and its derivatives]

Abstract:Shikonin, the main active ingredient of Lithospermum, and its derivatives have been proved to have antitumor effects, and the anti-tumor mechanisms involve multiple targets. Based on recent literatures, this review focuses on the antitumor effects and its mechanisms. More emphases are given on the aspects of induction of apoptosis, induction of necrosis, acting on matrix metalloproteinase, acting on the protein tyrosine kinase and antiangiogenesis. The current status and problems of shikonin derivatives in antitumor effects are simply summarized and lookout for the development of antitumor drugs with shikonin as leading compounds.

Abstract:LC-Q-TOF-MS and LC-IT-MS in positive and negative ion mode were applied to simultaneously characterize the constituents in Suanzaoren tang. Analysis was performed on an Agilent Zorbax SB-C18, Rapid Resolution HT column(4.6 mmx 50 mm, 1. 8 micro m) with gradient elution of acetonitrile(A) -aqueous solution containing 0. 05% formic acid(B) at a flow rate of 0. 6 mL min(-1) and the column temperature was 30 degreesC. By comparing MS fragmentation, accurate molecular weight, literature date and standard compounds information, a total of48 compounds were successfully identified or speculated. The origins of these compounds were assigned to the corresponding Chinese medicine. Thirty-one compounds were reported in Suanzaoren tang for the first time. LC-Q-TOF-MS combined with LC-IT-MS is a simple and rapid tool for the identification of constituents of Suanzaoren tang, and the results could provide evidence for the research on quality combined and effective constituents of Suanzaoren tang.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (SZS), the seed of Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa (Bunge) Hu ex H.F. Chow (Chinese name Suan-Zao-Ren), is widely distributed in China, Laos, Myanmar, and Iran. It is a classic traditional Chinese medicine with sedative and sleeping effects. In clinical practice, there are more than 155 proprietary Chinese medicines containing SZS. However, many commercial SZS products are difficult to qualify using current methods. Moreover, there is a scarcity of quality standards for SZS in proprietary Chinese medicines. Aim of the study The purpose of this study was to clearly reveal the quality indicators during the entire production process of SZS and its products. Materials and methods This study reviewed more than 230 articles and related books on the quality control of SZS and its proprietary Chinese medicines published over the last 40 years (from January 1979 to October 2022). Moreover, where available, information on the quality of was also collected from websites for comparison, including online publications ( e.g . PubMed, CNKI, Google Scholar, and Web of Science), the information at Yaozhi website and China Medical Information Platform, along with some classic books on Chinese herbal medicine. The literature and information search were conducted using keywords such as "Suan-Zao-Ren", " Ziziphus jujuba" and "quality control", and the latest results from various databases were combined to obtain valid information. The active components, which in vivo exposure, and Q-markers were also summarized. Results The jujuboside A, jujuboside B, and spinosin were revealed as the key Q-markers for SZS. Moreover, the advancements and prospects of the quality control for SZS and its extract, proprietary Chinese medicines, health foods, and adulterants were comprehensively summarized. The high-performance liquid chromatography-UV/evaporative light scattering detection and fingerprint analysis were found to be the mainstream methods for the SZS quality control. In particular, the novel quality evaluation method based on the unit content was applied for SZS and its proprietary Chinese medicines. Significant fluctuations were found in the contents of Q-markers. Moreover, the mass transfer rule of Q-markers was comprehensively clarified based on the entire production process, including production origins, ripening time, primary process, processing, compatibility decoction/extract, and storage. Ultimately, the crushing and compatibility of SZS were found to be the key steps affecting the active components. Conclusions In short, this study provides solid evidences to reveal quality indicators for the entire production process of developing rational quality standards for SZS and its products. Moreover, this study also provides a template quality control overview, which could be extended to other traditional Chinese medicines.

Abstract:This article will review selected herbal products used in traditional Chinese medicine, including medicinal mushrooms ( bā xī mó gū; Agaricus blazei, yún zhī; Coriolus versicolor, líng zhī; Ganoderma lucidum, xiāng xùn; shiitake, Lentinus edodes, niú zhāng zhī; Taiwanofungus camphoratus), Cordyceps ( dōng chóng xià cǎo), pomegranate ( shí liú; Granati Fructus), green tea ( lǜ chá; Theae Folium Non Fermentatum), garlic ( dà suàn; Allii Sativi Bulbus), turmeric ( jiāng huáng; Curcumae Longae Rhizoma), and Artemisiae Annuae Herba ( qīng hāo; sweet wormwood). Many of the discussed herbal products have gained popularity in their uses as dietary supplements for health benefits. Abstract:Salvia miltiorrhiza bunge (Dan shen in Chinese)is extracted from dried roots and rhizomes of Labiatae Salvia.Tan-shinones are the main lipid-soluble components in Salvia,each has specific pharmacological activity.This review focuses on the research progress of Tanshinones on cardiovascular diseases,an-ti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, anti-tumor effect,hepatocyte protection and neuroprotective effects.Thera-peutic effects and mechanisms of Tanshinones on diverse disea-ses are summarized,pharmacokinetics and pharmaceutic evalua-tion were concluded.This review provides a global understand-ing about Tanshinones as a class of effective and promising can-didates for further studies,and lays a foundation for developing new Tanshinone-based agents according to the characteristics of Tanshinones.

Abstract:Zha-xun is widely used in Tibetan medicine and is also an international traditional medicine. This article would summarize the use status and research progress of Zha-xun by various ethnic groups all over the world, and the results show that it has various synonyms but most of them imply its most characteristic feature-outflow from the rock; Zha-xun resources are distributed in various places of the world, and its bearing spots are closely related to the geological structure; there are sharp arguments on the origins of Zha-xun, mainly including the minerals origin, biological fossils origin, biological origin, etc. Zha-xun has multiple functions and is mainly used to treat stomach disease, liver disease and rheumatoid arthritis in China, and premature ejaculation, impotence, vaginitis embolism in foreign countries. "Iron" Zha-xun is used into medicines both at home and abroad. According to ancient materia medica texts, it was mainly classified into five types, including gold Zha-xun, silver Zha-xun, copper Zha-xun, iron Zha-xun and lead Zha-xun mainly based on the predominance of color rather than the minerals contained. It is commonly believed by the domestic and foreign scholars that humic acid is the main medicinal part of Zha-xun, and their studies have found that it has a variety of pharmacological activities such as anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory, liver protection, analgesia, immune regulation, increasing sexual desire and fertility, antioxidation, antibacterial, antidiabetic, antiepileptic, antipsychotic, etc. This paper provides a scientific basis for the rational utilization of Zha-xun resources.

Abstract:Objective:To Summarize the general state of clinical application,pharmacological and quality control research on Wuzi Yanzong prescription in recent years.Methods:The clinic and research literatures about this prescription were summarized.Results:Now its application is expanding to treat procreation and urinary systematic diseases,internal diseases,anti-senility and mild cognitive impairment and some other diseases.Pharmacological research showed it can increase weight of reproductive organs,enhance male hormone secretion,lower content of blood sugar,strengthen body immune function,antagonize aging and improve learning and memory ability.Long-term toxicity research proved that the prescription was safe and innocuous for oral taking,and the standard of quality control of this prescription has been primarily established.Conclusion:Wuzi Yanzong prescription has been used to cure many diseases and the mechanism of good nootropic effects needs further investigated.
The Discrimination and Characterization of Volatile Organic Compounds in Different Areas of <i>Zanthoxylum bungeanum</i> Pericarps and Leaves by HS-GC-IMS and HS-SPME-GC-MS

Abstract:The pericarps of Zanthoxylum bungeanum (ZBP) and leaves of Zanthoxylum bungeanum (ZBL) are popular spices in China, and they have pharmacological activities as well. In this experiment, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the pericarps of Zanthoxylum bungeanum in Sichuan (SJ) and its leaves (SJY) and the pericarps of Zanthoxylum bungeanum in Shaanxi (SHJ) and its leaves (SHJY) were analyzed by headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) and headspace solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). The fingerprint of HS-GC-IMS and the heat maps of HS-SPME-GC-MS were established. Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were performed. The results showed that a total of 95 components were identified, 62 components identified by HS-SPME-GC-MS and 40 components identified by HS-GC-IMS, of which 7 were the same. The analysis found that SJ and SHJ were obviously distinguished, while SJY and SHJY were not. There were considerably fewer VOCs in the leaves than in the pericarps. In the characterization of the VOCs of ZBL and ZBP, the flavor of ZBP was more acrid and stronger, while the flavor of ZBL was lighter and slightly acrid. Thirteen and eleven differential markers were identified by HS-GC-IMS and HS-SPME-GC-MS, respectively. This is helpful in distinguishing between SHJ and SJ, which contributes to their quality evaluation.

Abstract:The study aims to provide an up-to-date review at the advancements of the investigations on the ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacological effect and exploitation and utilizations of Zanthoxylum L. Besides, the possible tendency and perspective for future research of this plant are discussed, as well. This article uses "Zanthoxylum L." "Zanthorylum bungeanum" as the keywords and collects relevant information on Zanthoxylum L. plants through electronic searches (Elsevier, PubMed, ACS, Web of Science, Science Direct, CNKI, Google Scholar), relevant books, and classic literature about Chinese herb. The plants of this genus are rich in volatile oils, alkaloids, amides, lignans, coumarins and organic acids, and has a wide range of pharmacological activities, including but not limited to anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-tumor, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, antioxidant and anti-infectious. This article reviewed both Chinese and international research progress on the active ingredients and pharmacological activities of Zanthoxylum L. as well as the applications of this genus in the fields of food, medicinal and daily chemicals, and clarified the material basis of its pharmacological activities. Based on traditional usage, phytochemicals, and pharmacological properties, of Zanthoxylum L. species, which indicate that they possess diverse bioactive metabolites with interesting bioactivities. Zanthoxylum L. is a potential medicinal and edible plant with diverse pharmacological effects. Due to its various advantages, it may have vast application potential in the food and medicinal industries and daily chemicals. Nonetheless, the currently available data has several gaps in understanding the herbal utilization of Zanthoxylum L. Thus, further research into their toxicity, mechanisms of actions of the isolated bioactive metabolites, as well as scientific connotations between the traditional medicinal uses and pharmacological properties is required to unravel their efficacy in therapeutic potential for safe clinical application.

Abstract:Xiaochaihu (XCH) is a classic Chinese medicine formula. XCH tablet, XCH granule, XCH capsule, and XCH effervescent tablet are included in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. In this review, the formula and quality standards of XCH preparations at home and abroad were compared. The differences in manufacturing process of XCH preparations are discussed. The progress of research on the qualitative identification, quantitative detection and fingerprint chromatogram/specific chromatogram of XCH preparations was reviewed. The characteristic components of Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum Cum Zingibere Et Alumine and Jujubae Fructus was rarely analyzed for XCH preparations. It is suggested that the specificity of drug quality detection methods should be improved. Considering drug safety and drug efficacy, it is suggested to set the upper and lower limits of the content of saikosaponins. The standards for heavy metals and other limited items for XCH preparations are also suggested to be set.

Abstract:Introduction: Th study aims to establish the chromatographic fingerprint of Zhachong Shisan pills (ZSP), and to explore its active components and mechanism of analgesic and anti-inflammatory action. Method: First, the Personal Compound Database and Library (PCDL) of ZSP was constructed through literature mining, and then the chemical composition and fingerprint of methanol extractions from 8 batches of ZSP were studied using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Quadrupole Time-Of-Flight tandem Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-QTOF-MS) technology. Furthermore, network pharmacology was used to explore the active compounds, potential targets, and signal pathways of analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity of ZSP. A total of 102 compounds were detected in positive and negative ion mode. Results: Fifty-six characteristic peaks in positive ion mode and 78 characteristic peaks in negative ion mode were confirmed as common peaks in the fingerprint of ZSP. Through network pharmacology research, the effective components, key targets, and signal pathways of ZSP for the treatment of cerebral apoplexy by analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects were all analyzed. Conclusion: This study explained the substance basis of the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of Zhachong Shisan Pills, and explores its possible mechanisms, providing ideas for rational clinical medication and in-depth pharmacological research.

Abstract:Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (the dried seeds of Ziziphus jujuba Mill. var. spinosa, Rhamnaceae) is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with high edible and pharmaceutical value. It contains abundant phytochemicals and possesses multiple biological activities. Phytochemicals include saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, fatty acids, and others. Among them, saponins and flavonoids are considered to be the characteristic components of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen. Both crude extracts and isolated compounds exhibit excellent bioactivities, including sedative-hypnosis, anti-anxiety, antidepressant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-Alzheimer's disease (AD), and others. Its potential therapeutic effect on AD has received increasing attention in recent years. Updated reviews to summarize the current research progress and deficiencies are urgently needed. This review summarized its pharmacological activity, quality control, and application. In addition, the existing problems and future development directions are also discussed. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Ziziphi Spinosae Semen is a vital traditional Chinese medicine that has a varied therapeutic effects. It is also added to food products due to its nontoxic properties. Reliable pharmacological studies have confirmed that it has multiple pharmacological activities. Particularly, its potential therapeutic effect on Alzheimer's disease (AD) has received significant attention, which makes Ziziphi Spinosae Semen an important potential candidate in the research of new drugs and health foods for the prevention of AD. This paper reviews the recent studies on Ziziphi Spinosae Semen in the treatment of AD. In addition, the quality control methods and practical applications are systematically summarized. It may provide essential guidance for the further utilization of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen in food and pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract:Background Shengmai San Formula (SMS), composed of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Ophiopogon Radix and Schisandra chinensis Fructus, was a famous formula in Tradition Chinese Medicine (TCM). With the expansion of clinical applications, SMS was developed to different dosage forms, including Shengmai Yin Oral liquid (SMY), Shengmai Capsule (SMC), Shengmai Granule (SMG), Shengmai Injection (SMI) and Dengzhan Shengmai Capsule (DZSMC). These above SMS-derived compound prescriptions (SSCPs) play an important role in the clinical treatment. This review is aimed to providing a comprehensive perspective of SSCPs. Methods The relevant literatures were collected from classical TCM books and a variety of databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Springer Link, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data. Results The chemical constituents of SSCPs, arrived from the individual medicinal materials including Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Ophiopogon Radix, Schisandra chinensis Fructus, Erigerontis Herba, were firstly summarized respectively. Then the pharmacokinetics studies, quality control, and pharmacological properties of SSCPs were all reviewed. The active compounds, pharmacokinetics characterizes, quality control markers, the effects and mechanisms of pharmacology of the different dosage forms of SSCPs were summarized. Furthermore, the research deficiencies of SSCPs and an innovative research paradigm for Chinese materia medica (CMM) formula were proposed. Conclusions SMS, as a famous CMM formula, has great values in drug research and in clinical treatment especially for cardiocerebrovascular diseases. This article firstly make a comprehensive and systematic review on SMS.

Research advances of Zaoren Anshen prescription preparations

Abstract:Zaoren Anshen prescription preparations(ZRASs), which are prepared from three traditional Chinese herb medicines, namely fried Zizyphi Spinosae Semen, Salvia Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and vinegar-processed Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, are a series of proprietary Chinese medicines for the treatment of insomnia, amnesia and dizzy in clinic. In recent years, pharmacodynamic effect, chemical constituents and quality control of ZRASs had been extensively studied for the purpose of ensuring their safety, efficacy and stability, and a great progress had been made. However, there is no review of the research advance of ZRASs up to date. The present review summarized the research advance of ZRASs in quality control standards, chemical constituents, pharmacodynamic effects, and chemical analysis for the first time, with the aim to provide a reference for further studies on the effective constituents and quality control of ZRASs.
Correlation between clinical response to interleukin 2 therapy and sustained production of tumor necrosis factor.

Abstract:Twenty-five previously untreated patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma were treated with 5-day cycles of continuous infusion of interleukin 2 (IL2) and lymphokine-activated killer cell reinfusion. Five achieved a partial response. Three patients were found to have detectable tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in serum before initiation of therapy. On the fifth day of therapy, 24 patients had circulating TNF with immunoradiometric assay whereas 13 had detectable biological activity. Two days after the end of IL2 therapy, TNF concentration (immunoradiometric assay) decreased in most cases but was still detectable in 17 patients. Thirteen patients had still circulating TNF bioactivity. Although there was no significant difference between TNF levels observed on the fifth day of therapy in the responder and nonresponder groups, 48 h after the end of IL2 infusion, both the TNF concentration and the biological activity were significantly higher in the group of responder patients. This result suggests that the clinical response to IL2 therapy in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma is correlated to a sustained production of TNF after the end of IL2 infusion.
