Electric Field-Based Regulation of Satellite Droplets Generated by Continuous Jet Breakup

Abstract:Continuous jet breakup based on Rayleigh instability is a common method of droplet generation in applications such as extreme ultraviolet source and wafer cleaning. Traditionally, the appearance of satellite droplets has been be avoided due to the pursuit of higher accuracy and efficiency. However, this study proposes a new idea of considering satellite droplets as targeted extreme micro-droplets. The sizes of the satellite droplets were regulated and their corresponding jetting orientations were deflected during the breakup between the main and satellite droplets by adding local electric fields indifferent directions. A multi-physical model was developed to simulate the coupled laminar two-phase flow and electrostatic field, and the equation for charge transportation during jet breakup was deduced. The influence mechanism of factors including electric field distribution, charge distribution, and volume force on the formation of satellite droplets was analyzed through simulation. Besides, the deflection angle and distance of the satellite droplets were calculated using the equivalent capacitance model. Finally, experimental devices were set up to verify the effectiveness of local electric field intervention on jet breakup and satellite droplet separation. The results showed that the experimental scheme can satisfy the stable generation of 50µm satellite droplets jetting through a micro-orifice with a diameter of 200µm.

Abstract:In a gas-solid fluidized bed, volatile liquid injection results in complex flow behaviors in the spray zone. To characterize the liquid existence forms (droplets and liquid films) and fluidization properties in the volatile spray zone, a mesoscale-theory based volatile spray zone model is developed with the consideration of hydrodynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer. A new energy-based stability condition is established according to two competition and coordination relationships, consisting of the energy dissipation based on the liquid-solid interface change and suspension and transporting of particles. The modeling results agree well with the experimental bed temperature as well as void fraction data, and show that the variation of liquid existence forms is dependent on the ratio of different energy consumption rates under the stability condition. Moreover, the gas-solid drag coefficient in the volatile spray zone is modified. Simulation results also reasonably describe the bed pressure drop fluctuation and particle velocity distribution.

Abstract:In many industrial processes, electrostatic charges are inevitable and affect the hydrodynamic behavior and heat transfer ability of chemical equipment. A comprehensive study of the electrostatic effect on bubble behavior, particle fluctuation velocity and heat transfer coefficient in the fluidized bed with a central jet has been evaluated in this paper by Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid model coupled with electrostatic model and energy model. The simulated voidage profiles at different positions, bubble detachment time and initial bubble diameter are compared with experimental results from the literature without charge. The bubble behaviors including bubble frequency and bubble numbers, combined with particle fluctuation parameters are analyzed in both charged and uncharged system. The electrostatic effect on two kinds of heat transfer coefficients is quantitatively compared, namely bubble to emulsion phase heat transfers based on the gas throughflow velocity and gas-solid local heat transfer coefficient. Simulation results show that electrostatic charges decrease bubble numbers and granular temperature, whereas the averaged heat transfer coefficients are enhanced. Overall, the electrostatic effect on the hydrodynamic and heat transfer characteristics can be revealed.

Abstract:The basic mechanism of electrospinning is the rapid whipping of charged liquid jets, undergoing a chaotic "whip" process, and eventually the formation of disordered reticular fibers is continuously deposited on the receiving device. Firstly, the physical model of jet whipping is studied, which is to be established the physical model of solvent evaporation on the surface of the jet. The Jeffreys model and the Voigt model are used to describe the viscoelastic model of the unstable generating end and the end, and the unstable dynamic model is constructed. Finally, the coupling control equation is obtained, which has certain theoretical guiding significance for the development of electrospinning process.

Abstract:The excess accumulation of charges in the fluidized bed has a severe impact on hydrodynamics. Due to lack of effective experimental methods, electrostatic effects on hydrodynamics have mostly been studied using numerical simulation. By injecting a trace of liquid antistatic agents into a fluidized bed, charges were controlled and electrostatic influences on particle motions were investigated. The average particle–wall impact angles are acquired by developing multiscale wavelet decomposition of acoustic emission signals. The impact angles are significantly influenced by both charge levels and gas velocities. If the electric force is reduced and/or fluid drag is increased, friction dominates the particle–wall interactions. Under a larger gas velocity where fluid drag dominates, charges elimination causes no significant variation in particle impact angles, but particle velocities increase as well as at lower gas velocities. In addition, existence of electrostatic charges influences the ranges of bubble growing zone and jet impacting zone. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 3628–3638, 2015

Abstract:Electrospray (ES) has attracted significant interest due to its advantages in generating uniform droplets and enabling controlled deposition. However, the complex interactions and droplet motion mechanisms between fluids and electric fields are still not well understood. Herein, this study presents a three-dimensional numerical model based on the volume of fluid and Lagrangian approaches to simulate the ES process in the pulsed jet mode. The model accurately captures the morphology and the atomization characteristics in the pulsed jet mode of ES. The effects of voltage and Reynolds number on the length of the non-atomized zone (including quasi-static Taylor cone, transition zone, and jet), diameter of the jet breakup, and atomization characteristics are discussed. Also, the mechanism of atomized droplets is revealed by analyzing the magnitudes of different types of forces imposing on the droplets in the electric field. The results indicate that higher Reynolds numbers lead to increased length of non-atomized zone and diameter of jet breakup, while the elevated voltages enhance atomization. Electric and Coulomb forces are, respectively, the dominant forces of forming the jet and expanding the atomization angle. Coulomb force increases the atomization angle, and electric field force increases the velocity of atomized droplets. Gravity and drag-force effects are relatively negligible throughout the atomization process. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the electrospray mechanisms and provide insights for optimizing electrospray applications.

Abstract:Suspension plasma spray (SPS) is a promising technique for nano-structured coatings and nano-powder synthesis where nano-particles are injected into the plasma jet with the help of liquid precursors. Most of the suspensions used in plasma spraying have the non-Newtonian behavior (viscoelastic or thixotropic). After injection into the plasma, the suspension is firstly atomized by the plasma jet before the droplets begin to vaporize. Understanding the breakup process of non-Newtonian liquid is critical to predict the condition of the resultant plasma spray. In this paper, a non-Newtonian liquid primary atomization model and a nano-particle model are implemented into a radio frequency inductively coupled plasma model of suspension plasma spraying. After validation of the non-Newtonian liquid breakup models with the published experimental data, the comprehensive particle model is used to predict the trajectory, velocity, temperature and size of the in-flight nano- or agglomerate particles. The effects of the atomization operating conditions and the characteristics of the non-Newtonian liquid on the particle acceleration and heating process are investigated. The parameters that have a significant influence on the spray process are identified.

Abstract:Recent experiments demonstrated that the essential electrospinning mechanism is a rapidly whipping dielectric liquid jet in an electric field. There are generally two main methods to control the jet, one is to control the solution and the other is to control the flight of the electrospinning jet through manipulation of the electric field. In this paper, a modified electric field distribution, providing a stagnation surface, is discussed in order to know the effect on the electrospinning jet. The results illustrate that if the bending starting point happened below the stagnation point, the jet movement could be random to any direction as no electric force on the jet at the stagnation point and if the bending starting point happened before the jet reached the stagnation point, the jet movement could be bending as the modified jet path. The results also show that the modified electric field distributions could change the jet path and control the fiber morphology.

Abstract:In this paper, the instability of electrospinning jet is regarded as a dynamic Archimedean spiral moving downwards and the motion of the jet is simulated with the Archimedean spiral function by assumption that the lateral spiral velocity keeps unchanged, while the downward motion is under a constant acceleration. The simulated results were compared with experimental data, showing good agreement.

Abstract:Ultrasonic atomization technology has recently been widely used in industry due to its higher atomization efficiency. This paper proposes a method of electrostatic-assisted ultrasonic atomization spraying and designs a particular ultrasonic power supply that can directly introduce high-voltage static electricity onto the surface of the ultrasonic atomization so that the liquid can contact the charge and enhance the charging effect. This paper conducts numerical simulation analysis on the atomization process and statistically analyzes the numerical simulation atomization particle size through image processing. In addition, this paper designs experiments from two aspects of atomization particle size and film-forming effect. The results show that the experimental results are consistent with the numerical simulation results, verifying the accuracy of the numerical simulation results. It shows that in sub-droplet formation, introducing static electricity will increase the number of capillary waves, promote two mechanisms of the capillary pinch-off mechanism and the Rayleigh-plain instability, reduce atomization particle size, and increase atomization efficiency. Compared with the traditional airflow beam method, the film-forming surface quality of the electric field beam method is higher, and the surface roughness is lower. It solves the problem that airflow affects film-forming quality in traditional ultrasonic spraying with the airflow beam method. It provides a theoretical basis and scientific guidance for applying electrostatic-assisted ultrasonic atomization technology in the atomization and film preparation industry.

Dynamic Modeling of Micro- and Nano-Sized Particles Impinging on the Substrate During Suspension Plasma Spraying

Abstract:Suspension plasma spraying (SPS) can be utilized to manufacture finely structured coatings. In this process, liquid suspended with micro- or nano-sized solid particles is injected into a plasma jet. It involves droplet injection, solvent evaporation, and discharge, acceleration, heating, and melting of the solid particles. The high-speed and high-temperature particles finally impact on the substrate wall, to form a thin layer coating. In this study, a comprehensive numerical model was developed to simulate the dynamic behaviors of the suspension droplets and the solid particles, as well as the interactions between them and the plasma gas. The plasma gas was treated as compressible, multi-component, turbulent jet flow, using Navier-Stokes equations solved by the Eulerian method. The droplets and solid particles were treated as discrete Lagrangian entities, being tracked through the spray process. The drag force, Saffman lift force, and Brownian force were taken into account for the aerodynamic drag force, aerodynamic lift force, and random fluctuation force imposed on the particles. Spatial distributions of the micro- and nano-sized particles are given in this paper and their motion histories were observed. The key parameters of spray distribution, including particle size and axial spray distance, were also analyzed. The critical size of particle that follows well with the plasma jet was deduced for the specified operating conditions. Results show that in the downstream, the substrate influences the flow field structure and the particle characteristics. The appropriate spray distances were obtained for different micro- and nano-sized particles.

Abstract:The centrifugal electrostatic blowing process proposed in this paper solves the difficult continuous and stable deposition problem in the traditional centrifugal electrostatic spinning process. By establishing a flight deposition model of the centrifugal electrostatic spraying process, CFD is used to simulate and analyze the electrohydrodynamic effect of centrifugal jets, and the driving mechanism is explored. Subsequently, MATLAB is used to obtain the optimal solution conditions, and finally, the establishment of a two-dimensional flight trajectory model is completed and experimentally verified. In addition, the deposition model of the jet is established to clarify the flight trajectory under the multi-field coupling, the stable draft area of the jet is found according to this, and the optimal drafting station is clarified. This research provides new ideas and references for the exploration of the deposition mechanism of the centrifugal electrostatic blowing and electrostatic spinning process.

Abstract:From the raindrops of lightning to atomized droplets used in many fields, research on electrostatic spray technology has both a natural basis and practical significance. The utilization of electrostatic spray technology has covered the biological, food, pharmaceutical, industrial, agricultural, chemical, and manufacturing industries. To provide comprehensive information about the technology, this review presents a typical electrostatic spray system in terms of its atomization mechanism, electrostatic spray modes, and several kinds of basic parameters. This review focuses on the applications of electrostatic spray technology in the fields of nanomaterial preparation, agricultural plant protection, wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD), and fuel combustion. This paper comprehensively surveys already well-established or future potential applications of electrostatic spray technology.

Abstract:The instability and breakup of liquid jets under static or alternating electric fields are involved in numerous industrial applications. Unlike under electrostatic fields, far fewer investigations have been conducted to analyze the instability of liquid jets in alternating electric fields. Thus, the electric and viscous correction of viscous potential flow (EVCVPF) is applied here to describe the linear instability of leaky-dielectric liquid jets subjected to alternating electric fields. The effects of alternating electric fields, fluid electric properties, and other parameters are investigated. The capillary instability response is like that of the jets under electrostatic fields. Under a sufficiently strong alternating electric field, the resonance instability dominates surface disturbances, leading to the resonant atomization. Viscous damping makes the resonance weaker–even vanishing with the increasing frequency. Furthermore, the conductive charge–largely dependent on fluid conductivities–has the opposite effect of the surface charge. Thus, when the charge relaxation time approaches the imposed period, the parametric resonance is strongly inhibited. In addition, when aerodynamic effects are sufficiently strong, the resonance is covered.

Abstract:In this paper, a comprehensive model was developed to investigate the suspension spray for a radio frequency (RF) plasma torch coupled with an effervescent atomizer. Firstly, the RF plasma is simulated by solving the thermo-fluid transport equations with electromagnetic Maxwell equation. Secondly, primary atomization of the suspension is solved by a proposed one-dimensional breakup model and validated with the experimental data. Thirdly, the suspension droplets and discharged nanoparticles are modeled in Lagrangian manner, to calculate each particle tracking, acceleration, heating, melting and evaporation. Saffman lift force, Brownian force and non-continuum effect are considered for nanoparticle momentum transfer, as well as the effects of evaporation on heat transfer. This model predicts the nanoparticle trajectory, velocity, temperature and size in the RF suspension plasma spray. Effects of the torch and atomizer operating conditions on the particle characteristics are investigated. Such operating conditions include gas-to-liquid flow ratio, atomizer orifice diameter, injection pressure, power input level, plasmas gas flow rate, and powder material. The statistical distributions for the multiple particles are also discussed for different cases.

Abstract:Suspension plasma spray is a promising technology for surface coatings. In this work, a comprehensive numerical model was developed to investigate the multiphase flow of suspension droplets and nanoparticles in direct-current (DC) plasma spraying. A three-dimensional computational model was developed to describe the plasma jet flow fields coupled with the axial injection of suspension droplets in which the zirconia micro- and nanoparticles were dispersed. The suspension droplets were tracked using Lagrangian coordinates, considering particle heating, melting, and evaporation. After evaporation of the solvent surrounding the particle, the nanoparticles were discharged into the plasma flow. In addition to the viscous force exerted by the flow on the micrometer-sized particles, the Brownian force and the Saffman lift force were taken into account. The effects of the noncontinuum on particle momentum transfer and evaporation on heat transfer were also considered. The numerical predictions of gas flow temperature were compared with experimental data and numerical data obtained with a different computational fluid dynamics code. The agreement was reasonable. The trajectories, velocity, and temperature of nanoparticles were calculated, and compared with those of microparticles. The results showed that the Brownian force plays a major role in acceleration and heating of nanoparticles. Compared with the conventional plasma spray process with micrometer-sized feedstock, the nanoparticles in suspension plasma spraying were found to have a wider spatial distribution and higher temperature. The effects of operating parameters, such as the power input to the plasma gas and plasma gas composition, on the gas velocity and temperature were investigated. The parameters that have a significant effect on the heat and momentum transfer to the particles injected in the plasma jet were identified.

Abstract:The advancement of semiconductor and microelectronics technologies has underscored the increasing importance of efficient heat management in electronic devices. To overcome the shortcoming of low flow rates of electro-spray, the present study is motivated by using visualization and heat transfer performance experiments to reveal the morphology evolution and heat transfer characteristics of electro-sprays with high flow rates. The results indicate that the morphology of electro-sprays is closely related to the electric field intensity and the flow rate, and can be classified into six modes: dripping mode, spindle mode, cone jet mode, multi-cone jet mode, simple jet mode, and oscillating jet mode. Furthermore, the formation mechanisms and transition rules of these modes are discussed in detail. In addition, the effects of the flow rate, voltage, and spray morphology on the heat transfer performance of electro-sprays was investigated, and strategies for enhancing heat transfer were subsequently proposes. At a flow rate is 800 ml/h and an applied voltage is 6 KV, the critical heat flux ( CHF ) can reach 100.8 W/cm 2 , and the maximum heat transfer coefficient ( h max ) can reach 14416.55 W/m 2 K. This study not only enhances the comprehension of high flow rate electro-spray technology, but serves as a vital reference for the design and application of electro-spray cooling devices.

Abstract:Liquid atomization is applied in nanostructure dense coating technology to inject suspended nano-size powder materials into a suspension plasma spray (SPS) torch. This paper presents the effects of the atomization parameters on the nanoparticle processing. A numerical model was developed to simulate the dynamic behaviors of the suspension droplets, the solid nanoparticles or agglomerates, as well as the interactions between them and the plasma gas. The plasma gas was calculated as compressible, multi-component, turbulent jet flow in Eulerian scheme. The droplets and the solid particles were calculated as discrete Lagrangian entities, being tracked through the spray process. The motion and thermal histories of the particles were given in this paper and their release and melting status were observed. The key parameters of atomization, including droplet size, injection angle and velocity were also analyzed. The study revealed that the nanoparticle processing in SPS preferred small droplets with better atomization and less aggregation from suspension preparation. The injection angle and velocity influenced the nanoparticle release percentage. Small angle and low initial velocity might have more nanoparticles released. Besides, the melting percentage of nanoparticles and agglomerates were studied, and the critical droplet diameter to ensure solid melting was drawn. Results showed that most released nanoparticles were well melted, but the agglomerates might be totally melted, partially melted, or even not melted at all, mainly depending on the agglomerate size. For better coating quality, the suspension droplet size should be limited to a critical droplet diameter, which was inversely proportional to the cubic root of weight content, for given critical agglomerate diameter of being totally melted.

Abstract:Fluid flows hosting electrical phenomena make the subject of a fascinating and highly interdisciplinary scientific field. In recent years, the extraordinary success of electrospinning and solution blowing technologies for the generation of polymer nanofibers has motivated vibrant research aiming at rationalizing the behavior of viscoelastic jets under applied electric fields or other stretching fields including gas streams. Theoretical models unveiled many original aspects in the underpinning physics of polymer solutions in jets, and provided useful information to improve experimental platforms. This article reviews advances in the theoretical description and numerical simulation of polymer solution jets in electrospinning and solution blowing. Instability phenomena of electrical and hydrodynamic origin are highlighted, which play a crucial role in the relevant flow physics. Specifications leading to accurate and computationally viable models are formulated. Electrohydrodynamic modeling, theories for the jet bending instability, recent advances in Lagrangian approaches to describe the jet flow, including strategies for dynamic refinement of simulations, and effects of strong elongational flow on polymer networks are reviewed. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives of the field are outlined and discussed, including the task of correlating the physics of the jet flows with the properties of realized materials, as well as the development of multiscale techniques for modelling viscoelastic jets.
