Abstract:Aeolian sand transport drives geophysical phenomena, such as bedform evolution and desertification. Creep plays a crucial, yet poorly understood, role in this process. We present a model for aeolian creep, making quantitative predictions for creep fluxes, which we verify experimentally. We discover that the creep transport rate scales like the Shields number to the power 5/2, clearly different from the laws known for saltation. We derive this 5/2 power scaling law from our theory and confirm it with meticulous wind tunnel experiments. We calculate the creep flux and layer thickness in steady state exactly and for the first time study the relaxation of the flux toward saturation, obtaining an analytic expression for the relaxation time. The sand transport of granular beds under the action of turbulent wind‐sheared flows is of major importance for the bedforms evolution and desertification processes. Up to now, the saltation transport is well understood and predictable but not the creep transport and relevant scaling laws. In this study, a theory for the aeolian creep transport is developed and verified through wind tunnel experiments. We propose for the first time a scaling law with the Shields number for the creep transport rate. Our novel model allows predictions of the aeolian creep transport rate and shows that it captures the relaxation process in actual creep transport. Such theoretical model provides key tools for the study of aeolian creep but could not previously be studied in such detail. Our study provides a better understanding for the phenomenon that the bed surface itself appeared to be “fluidized” in aeolian sand transport. Transition of probability of sand grain creep at the initial stage of aeolian transport

Abstract:The transition probability of creep sand grain is important for confirming the ratio of creep flux. Mathematical models are developed for movement modes of sand grains transiting from rolling to rest and saltation by means of two random variables(wind velocity near the bed surface and the position of sand grains in the bed). And the terminal probabilities of three modes of movement are deducted as well by the limit as time approaches infinity. A relative creeping probability which manifests the ratio of the creeping one in total flux are numerated with the total probability of creeping and saltation being divided by the probability of creeping. It turns out to be that the three probabilities are the function of time, grain diameter and the profile of wind velocity on the surface of sand bed. The rest probability decreases when the rolling time increases and the grain diameter decreases. The rolling probability increase first and then decrease when the rolling time increases under a certain grain diameter; but over a certain grain diameter, the rolling probability will increase monotonously. The saltation probability increases when the rolling time increases. The time reaching steady state increases when the grain size increases. The three probabilities of the same grains will limit to a fixed value under certain wind profile. The terminal probability and relative creep probability are not a constant but have a wide range. The terminal probability of rest and saltaion increases and decreases respectively when the grain size increases and that the terminal probability of creep first increases and then decreases. The relative probability of creep which can be interpreted as the relative amount of creep sand in all motional sand changes little with the average and variance of the wind. Grain diameter is the most important factor influencing the relative creep probability. The conclusion is corresponding with past experimental results considering the ratio of relative creep flux as a constant (25%) when the grain size is 0.25mm.
The transformation between different modes of motion of particles in steady aeolian transport

Abstract:Aeolian sediment transport is an important morphodynamic process that drives geomorphological evolution, affects the climate system, and induces various natural disasters. The creep load involves both particles of a sufficiently large size that cannot be easily lifted to the upper air, as well as smaller particles that can transition between different modes of motion, although the contribution of the latter has rarely been investigated. In this study, we investigate the features of the saltation cycle, namely the time period from the moment a particle is entrained into the air to when the particle is again trapped in the bed, and the transformation mechanism between creep, reptation, and saltation by directly simulating the steady-state sand transport of particles within the saltation regime. The results indicate that a saltation cycle generally contains one to tens of individual hop processes, with the mean and standard deviation of the hop times decreasing with the increasing friction velocity, owing to the presence of more energetic particles at the bed surface. Over half of the transported particles move in creep or reptation model because a moving particle generally experiences frequent transition between creep, reptation, and saltation. Furthermore, the fundamental reason for the change in the mode of motion is the strong impact velocity dependence of the total coefficient of restitution during the rebound process. Current rebound models predict a reasonable coefficient of restitution only if the particle impacts the bed at a moderate velocity; however, their predictions deviate from the actual situation at relatively low or high impact velocities. These findings enhance our understanding of the motion dynamics of particles within wind-blown sand movements, and further reduce the uncertainty in predicting their mass flux in different modes of motion.

Abstract:This article presents an experimental test and a program to empirically fit experimental data for the horizontal flux of wind-blown sand passing through a unit area along a vertical direction per unit time. The experimental data for the sand flow flux as a function of the height for naturally mixed sands, which were chosen from a sand dune at the southeastern edge of the Tengger desert, were measured with a sand collector in a field wind tunnel. On the basis of the experimental data and a least squares method, a fitting program is proposed here and, further, an explicit form of an empirical formula varying with height and axial wind velocity or friction velocity for the flux structure of the sands is gained. After that, we obtain an explicit form of the empirical equation for the measurement of streamwise sand transport per unit width and unit time by integrating the empirical formula for sand flux along the height direction and considering the contribution of sand creep. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of the predictions of some equations, especially the well-known Bagnold equation and Kawamura equation, for predicting streamwise wind-sand transport using the empirical equation obtained for mixed sands. The results show that the predictions from Bagnold's equation in the region of friction velocity u(*)>0.47 m/s and Kawamura's equation in the region u(*t)less than or equal tou(*)<0.35 m/s are effective. Meanwhile, the measurement results given from the empirical equation smoothly transit from Kawamura's prediction to Bagnold's prediction as the friction velocity increases in the range 0.35 m/s<u(*)<0.47 m/s.
Granular Pseudo-Fluid Large-Eddy Simulation Study of Aeolian Sand Transport Near a Bed Surface

Abstract:Three dimensional transport of gas-solid two-phase aeolian sand was simulated based on coupling of gas-phase large-eddy simulation (LES) and pseudo-fluid model where the kinetic theory for granular flow(KTGF)forms the basis for the turbulence modeling in the solid phase. The vertical profile of the mean horizontal velocity, the concentration and the horizontal root-mean-square (RMS) velocity fluctuation of blown sand near the surface of sand bed were analyzed statistically at the same free-stream wind velocity. The distributions of different statistical parameters obtaining from simulation and experiment were compared. The results show that the simulating model can reveal the blowing sand field characteristics quite well. The same distribution trends of statistical parameters are found for computational results with two different drag models in dilute aeolian sand transport. Within the saltation layer, the mean horizontal velocity of blown sand increases with height, but the concentration decreases with an increase in height. The horizontal RMS velocity fluctuation shows a typical single peak in the lower part of the saltation layer. The similar changing trends are obtained from simulating and relative literature data. The actual choice for the value of the restitution coefficient plays the key role in revealing the intensity of sand velocity fluctuation.

Abstract:Wind-blown sand transport in the near surface layer is the key form as well as the most concentrated and popular content of wind-blown sand physics. It is also an important process in the formation of aeolian landforms. In the early stage of wind-blown sand physics, scientists studied the sand transport mechanisms through field measurements and wind tunnel experiments. They studied the movement of a single particle in wind-blown sand flow, explored its lift-off mechanisms, defined different motion patterns of a single particle through theoretical analysis. These works established the base of wind erosion research. In order to further reveal the regularities of wind-blown sand flux and to satisfy the need of the development of space science (it seems that sand (dust) storms and dust devils happen more frequently on other planets, for example on Mars, than on Earth), people began to study the macroscopic structure of wind-blown sand flow in 1970s.

Abstract:The present work employs a predictive model of fluctuating wind velocities constructed on the basis of long-term field observations to perform trans-scale simulations of aeolian sand flow, dune morphology and migration characteristics, and the overall evolution of dune fields. On the premise of comparing the simulated basic statistics of turbulent wind field and sand flow, and dune dynamic characteristics with experimental results to verify the reliability of our dune field model, the simulation results at different scales are compared with those of mean-flow based simulations to explore the effects of turbulent fluctuations. Analyses on sand transport rate of sand flow and average saltation length of sand particles indicated that turbulent fluctuations enhance the sand transport capacity of wind field, which promotes the initial morphological growth of dunes, dune migration and inter-dune interactions; and thus, more small size dunes with typical morphologic features are formed earlier within dune fields. The cumulative impacts of turbulence during long-term evolution accelerate the coarsening of dune field pattern, causing the dune number density to decline more rapidly, the dune height and inter-dune spacing to be larger in dune fields. Additionally, the turbulence effects enhanced with increasing wind velocities have more significant influences on small inertial particles with better following features. These findings contribute to insights into the effects of natural turbulent wind field on aeolian dune systems.

Abstract:We studied the creep motion of granular materials in a gradient potential field that is created using a slow spin-up experiment device. Natural sand confined in the acrylic box is spun up by a controlled turntable and the surface flows are captured using video-based measurements. Various spin-up accelerations were considered to understand the responses of creep motion on different accelerating paths. Convergent behaviors in the morphological change of sand surface were observed in the final steady state. To quantify the quasi-static spin-up process, we examined the net flux and the surface slope as a function of the spin rate and offset from the rotation axis. Evolution of sand creep motion demonstrated behaviors similar to regolith migration in numeric simulations, showing intermittency like general sheared granular systems. We noticed the sand surface approaches criticality as the spin-up proceeding, consistent with the observation that top-shaped asteroids near limiting spin rate take on critical shape. Comparisons to large-scale numeric simulations and analytical solutions reveal underlying similarities between our experiments and the million-year evolution of asteroid regolith under YORP acceleration, which raises the possibility of studying asteroid surface processes in laboratory analogue experiments.

Abstract:High-speed digital photography was adopted to record sand creep motion in atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel.Non-negative subtraction algorithm,dynamical threshold algorithm and bidirectional particle tracking algorithm were applied successively to abstract adequate and valid creep trajectories from image sequence.Then,velocity magnitude and lift-off velocity of creep sands were statistically analyzed.The results indicated that creep motion initiated by flow and that initiated by collision respectively stood for steadily and dynamically varying parts of whole creep motion;as friction velocity increases,proportions of two parts would go in opposite way and the dominance would eventually turn to latter part once the friction velocity exceeds critical value.

Abstract:When sand grains are blown to lift-off from sand bed, there are three main motions, i.e. creep, saltation, and suspension, in the interaction between sand movement and wind flow. It has been observed or measured that the moving sand particles are electrified along with the interaction, which generates electric field in the space of wind-sand movement. This paper presents a theoretical approach to predict the electric field distribution in the wind-sand space after the sand grains with creep and saltation motions are considered to have some electric charges, and some empirical formulae for the sand movement are employed. The results show that the theoretical predictions from this approach are fairly in agreement with the corresponding experimental data.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms behind time-dependent behaviour of granular materials is important in assessing agein of dynamically improved sands and set-up displacement piles in sand. A series of triaxial tests was carried out to investigate the creep of dense granular materials. In addition to shear strain development, a complex volumetric strain response with rotation of the creep strain vector over time was measured and the effect of the material characteristics was examined. The change in microstructure of dense sands during one-dimensional creep was also investigated using resin injection and optical microscopy of sections. Upon application of load, particles aligned to be more perpendicular to the load direction. However, over time, the particles rotated in space. A change in the local void ratio distribution was also found. Initially, the particles appeared relatively evenly spaced. However, with time, they grouped or clustered together. A conceptual model, accounting for these changes in microstructure, is proposed. The model emphasises the importance of the bimodal load-bearing nature of granular materials, suggesting that creep begins in frictional slippage of weakly loaded particles, which allows strongly loaded columns of particles to gradually adjust. The model may help to explain the complex volumetric creep response of dense soils and why dynamically densified soils 'age' with no detectable change in relative density.

Athermal granular creep in a quenched sandpile

Abstract:Creep is a generic descriptor of slow motions -- in the context of materials, it describes quasi-static deformation of a solid when subjected to stresses below the global yield, at which all rigidity collapses and the material flows. Here, we experimentally investigate creep, flow, and the transition between the two states in a granular heap flow. Within the surface flowing layer the dimensionless strain rate diminishes with depth, there is an absence of spatial correlations, and there is no aging dynamics. Beneath this layer, the bulk creeps via localized avalanches of plasticity, and there is significant aging. The transition between fast surface flow and slow bulk creep and aging is observed to be in the vicinity of a critical inertial number of $I = 10^{-5}$. Surprisingly, at the cessation of surface flow and the `quenching' of the pile, creep persists in the absence of the flowing layer; albeit with significant differences for a pile that experiences a long duration of surface flow (strongly annealed) and one where flow during preparation does not last long (weakly annealed). Our results contribute to an emerging view of athermal granular creep, showing similarities across dry and submerged systems. Quenched quiescent heaps that creep indefinitely, however, present a challenge to granular rheology, and open new possibilities for interpreting and casting creep and deformation of soils in nature.

Abstract:In this study, biaxial shear and creep numerical simulations were carried out on both dense and loose sands based on discrete element method to examine the kinematics and micro mechanism of creep. The simulations qualitatively reproduced the macroscopic behavior of sand during shearing and creep. Contact forces, contact normals and voids were used to describe the evolution of internal structure. And three independent modes of contact motion, i.e., contact deformation (normal and tangential), Type4 rolling and rigid-body motion, were utilized to explore the contributions of contact motions to sample deformation. It is found that (1) the change of creep stage can be charactered by the anisotropy evolution of internal structure, and the increase of internal structure anisotropy would induce the rise of creep rate (i.e., the creep rupture); (2) contributions from different modes of contact motion to macro sand deformation during creep and shearing process is complex, that is, the contact deformation is the dominant mode in both shearing and creep process, whereas the contributions from tangential contact deformation during creep is complete opposite to its effect in shearing process, which leads to contract during creep; the possible reason for this is that the creep behavior is deformation-path dependent; the creep rupture can occur only under the condition which the strain localization is developed; (3) the contributions of normal and tangential contact deformation to volumetric stain are also different in strong and weak contact force chains; the deformation in weak contact force chain is more similar to the macro deformation, which means that the macro deformation is controlled by the weak contact force chain.

Abstract:Based on quantitative simulations on the formation and evolution of aeolian dune fields, a semi-analytical equation describing the migration of aeolian sand dunes with respect to dune height, annual wind regime, frictional wind speed, and sand grain diameter is proposed in this paper through analyzing the migration speeds of aeolian sand dunes with different heights in a dune field. The migration speeds of aeolian sand dunes on Earth predicted by the equation is consistent with field observations, and it can be applied to describe the migration of underwater sand dunes and aeolian snow dunes on Earth, as well as that of aeolian sand dunes on other planets, for example Martian sand dunes. In addition, we can also obtain the annual wind regime and the frictional wind speed in dune fields by the A–W method proposed by this paper for given dune speed and sand diameter. It provides a new way to obtain the information of wind field in desert hinterland and on other planets.

Abstract:Abstract Sand flux is the key factor to determine the migration of sand dunes and the erosion to the surrounding environment. There are crescent-shaped sand dunes of various scales in the desert, and there are significant differences in spatial wind field and sand flux among them. However, due to the difficulty of monitoring, it is difficult to continuously observe the spatial wind field and sand flux around the larger crescentic dunes. On the basis of the Reynolds-Average Navier–Stokes (RA-NS) equation and the stress and sand flux model, the distribution of wind field and sand flux of a circular dune with a height of 4.2 m and a length of about 100 m during the four evolutionary periods of the evolution into a crescentic dune was simulated in this study. By comparing with the measured results, we verified that the closer to the leeward side, the more the simulated values of the velocity in wind field and sand flux were in line with the measured results. In order to further analyze the influence of the height of dune and other relevant parameters on sand flux, we simulated the influence on wind field and sand flux by changing the air viscosity and wind velocity of upper boundary. We found that the air viscosity mainly affected the amount of deposited sand on the leeward side of sand dune, while the increase of wind velocity would undoubtedly increase the sand flux of the whole sand dune. In addition, the simulation results also showed that the influence of changes in height of dune on the turbulent intensity of leeward side was very significant, and the turbulent intensity increased with the height of dune. The height changes of tall dunes gradually affected the transport of sand caused by wind flow behind the leeward side because that the rotation of the wind flow would form new vortexes at the large pores behind the leeward side, which would increase the turbulent energy in space and thus would increase the distance of migration of the lifting sand. While the low sand dunes could not form extra small vortexes at the bottom of the leeward side, so the wind velocity was small and the eddy currents behind the leeward side were more stable. The simulation results indicated that wind velocity was not the only reason for increasing the amount of sand flux, and the fluctuation of wind flow caused by turbulence could also stimulate the movement of sand particles on the ground.

Abstract:Particle-scale mechanisms that control the static creep behavior of crushable sands are not well understood. In this context, this study examines the problem of creep of crushable sands undergoing one-dimensional (1D) compression by using a three-dimensional (3D) discrete element method (DEM) simulation. The rate process theory (RPT)-based creep contact model considering rolling resistance and a probabilistic particle fracture model satisfying mass conservation were incorporated into a large-scale DEM simulation. The coupled effects of the interparticle sliding and delayed particle fracture and the influences of rolling resistance, initial porosity, and characteristic particle strength on the creep behavior were then investigated. The high capabilities of the model in reproducing many facets of the soil behavior during the 1D compression and creep seen in the laboratory was demonstrated by comparing the simulation results with published experimental data. It was found that the creep deformation was mainly caused by stress redistribution at low vertical stress while particle rearrangement and particle breakage became more prevailing with the increase of vertical stress.

Vertical Mass Flux Profiles of Different Grain Size Groups in Aeolian Sand Transport

Abstract:This paper presented the vertical mass flux profiles of different grain size groups in aeolian sand transport,which is the hot issue of non-uniform sand transport research but is rarely studied recently.The sand samples of vertical mass flux were further investigated using a particle size analyzer that were measured in a wind tunnel experiment conducting with non-uniform sands and five different stream velocities.Results show that the vertical mass flux profiles of coarse sand groups are similar to that of all sands measured in the wind tunnel,exhibiting an exponential decay distribution with a positive deviation occurring in the near-bed region;however,the vertical mass flux profiles of fine sand groups decayed exponentially in the whole height.Based on the results above,this study simulated the vertical mass flux profiles of different grain size groups in terms of equilibrium saltation theory.It is revealed that in the non-uniform sand transport,the launch speed and angle distributions of coarse sand are exponential function;the launch speed of fine sand is exponential function but the launch angle of it is Gaussian function.The mean sand launch speed occur between 0.4u* and 2.2u*,decaying with the increase of wind speed(u*)and grain size.
