Social Quality Theory and the Construction of A Harmonious Society

Abstract:Since the beginning of the 21th century,Chinese government sets up an idea of "harmonious society" as its new policy goal,focusing their policy efforts on the enhancement of people's livelihoods and welfare conditions. In order to achieve this policy goal,we need to investigate the problems and barriers that may block this process of development,as well as to make the theoretical analysis about these problems to find their potential solutions. In this context,social quality theory,as a new theoretical paradigm of social policy research,may render us some help to conduct such analysis. Since this theory promotes the ideal of social cohesion and discloses the essential linkage between socio-economic developments and social harmony,we can apply this theory as a useful conceptual instrument for abating the tension caused by numerous social problems,which are incurred by the over-speedy market-oriented running. Also,this theory may still inspire us some useful ideas about the development strategy of contemporary China.
