Abstract:Many island cities have vulnerable ecosystems, yet island ecosystems also present special challenges for research. Ecological footprint analysis is an effective method of evaluating the ability of island cities to engage in regional ecological sustainable development. This study uses ecological footprint analysis combined with the ArcGIS platform to evaluate the ecological security of 14 neighborhoods on Zhoushan Island (Zhejiang Province, China) in 2010, 2013, and 2015. The partial least squares regression model is used to explore factors affecting spatial and temporal differences in ecological security in the island's neighborhoods and to help optimize the island's ecological sustainable development. Results reveal that Zhoushan Island's per capita ecological footprint decreased from 7.355 hm2 in 2010 to 4.662 hm2 in 2015, yet throughout the study period, the per capita ecological footprint remained higher than the per capita ecological carrying capacity in all neighborhoods. Although the island's ecological security has gradually improved, there continue to be large ecological deficits and ecological pressure. To improve the island city's ecological security, we should optimize the mode of urban development, develop renewable energy sources, protect ecologically valuable land, improve the scale and quality of urban zones and transportation infrastructure, and improve residents' industrial and consumption structures.

Abstract:It involves a lot of work to realize the integration of cultural ecosystem and human settlement system. The purpose of this research is to solve the damage caused by the construction of the New District of Zhoushan islands, and to realize the harmonious development of the relationship between the people and the people from the perspective of cultural ecology. The present writer locates in the location based on the combination of the New District, make ful use of theories of cultural ecology and living environment, starting from the practical scientific point of view, on the islands of Zhoushan city construction of the past, present and future are analyzed comprehensively and carefuly, in order to improve the overal quality of the regional living environment.

Abstract:This paper investigates ways of deploying ecological principles in the planning and design practice of landscape architecture. As a modern profession, one of the central tasks of landscape architecture is of protecting and recovering our environment. The profession is now in the demand in China, because of China’s rapid urban development and the consequent environmental problems. A case study of the planning and design of the Li Lake area provides evidence of how the profession is carrying out such a task. The study also identifies the disconnection between ecological and cultural strategies for recovering a particular landscape.

Abstract:Islands, which provide multiple ecosystem services, are subject to increasing urbanization pressure due to the ongoing marine development, especially in developing countries. Insights into the island urbanization mechanism and its ecological consequences are essential to sustainable development. In the present paper, the satellite images, nighttime lights, and topographic data were integrated to characterize the spatially explicit urbanization process and mechanism during 1995-2011 in the Zhoushan Island, East China. Furthermore, the corresponding spatially explicit changes in ecosystem services, including net primary productivity (NPP), carbon sequestration and oxygen production (CSOP), nutrient cycling, crop production, and habitat quality, were quantified based on the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA) and Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) models. The results showed that the Zhoushan Island had experienced a rapid urbanization over the years, with significant urban encroachment on the farmland and tidal flat. Moreover, the urban land expansion was positively correlated with that of the nighttime lights and negatively correlated with the elevation, slope, and the distance to shoreline. These indicated that the urban expansion was resulted from the enhancement of socioeconomic activities, and concentrated in the near-shore areas with low altitude and gentle slope. The urban encroachment on other land use types resulted in a decrease of 3.4 Gg C a(-1) NPP, 8.7 Gg a(-1) CSOP, 13.2 Gg a(-1) nutrient cycling, and 12.3 t a(-1) crop production, respectively. In addition, the habitat quality in 11% area of this island degraded substantially. Therefore, to achieve sustainable development of islands, it is urgent to implement more stringent policies, such as island spatial regulation, environmental impact assessment, intensive land use, and urban greening, etc. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:On the investigation of the ecological environment of Lanzhou City,its ecological function zoning was discussed with the spatial characteristics of the ecosystem,and its sensitive aspects and the current services.A planning idea of dual-circle structure was established,which could compromise between the social needs and the most fitting ecological functions in the urban ecosystem.Following this conceptual planning and the basic principles of ecological function zoning,Lanzhou area was divided into four first-class eco-functional zones and three second-class eco-functional zones.Besides,their main features,key issues and dominant ecological functions were clearly described to provide a scientific basis for establishing a good ecological structure of Lanzhou City.

Abstract:Due to land restriction, simple ecological recovery is almost ineffective to riverway located in urban built-up areas. Canal Saint Martin, as a secondary riverway in Paris, presents natural course of water successfully in limited space. It could be considered as apotheosis of riverway construction in such aspects as waterscape building, virescence design, function arrangement, adjustment of road structure, etc. This article introduces and analyses these aspects in order to supply some reference to this kind of renewal projects in China.

Abstract:Towards Eco-Island - Sustainable Urban Planning of Zhangzi Island is a pioneer project on study of synergetic operation of urban multi-system towards sustainability. Objectives based on local situation are given after thorough investigation and studies. The concept of Recycling Low-Carbon Development Model (RLCDM) is established to find out comprehensive technical routine, which is planned to be consistent and practical. The project involves multiple specialty planning, low-carbon development routine planning, indicator system study, landscape ecological planning and land-use planning based on GIS.

Abstract:Through his recent visits to three cities facing severe and challenging living environment, the author had a deeper insight into the symbiosis between human and nature. In Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, urban construction practices against floods and for water supply encroach on natural ecological infrastructure, resulting in the exhaustion of local water resource, city sinking, and erased indigenous cultural landscape of floating gardens. In Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, where water bodies are heavily polluted, scarce urban parks become the only refuge for citizens. Finally in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, estuary gates built to block floods invade the once prosperous canals, accelerating the decline of floating communities and markets and exacerbating traffic congestion and air pollution. Learning from these cases, cities must become better at territorial spatial planning and have the foresight to develop and grow while preserving and improving existing ecosystems. Essentially, territorial spatial planning and ecological restoration is to work with and by nature that would provide generous ecosystem services for humans, and, eventually, to increase people's well-being and enhance cities' development of sustainability.

Abstract:This study aims to clarify the development history and characteristics of the eco-neighborhood in France through the analysis of European contexts and domestic French circumstances. The eco-neighborhood in Europe, which originated from environmental technology-led neighborhood projects in Northern Europe, developed under the sustainable city policy in Europe and encouraged its emergence in France. According to domestic French circumstances, neighborhood project was considered an important means by which regional issues could be resolved, and the practices for global environmental considerations were integrated into it. The French national government provided various support programs and promoted continuous initiatives at the regional level. Thus, this study shows that the eco-neighborhood in France emphasizes the consideration of regional characteristics and socioeconomic aspects.

Abstract:<p>Island ecosystems are increasingly threatened by pressures from both climate change and intensifying human activity, especially in developing countries. Evaluation of ecological quality is essential to implementation of interventions for adapting to climate change and alleviating human–nature land-use conflicts in the Anthropocene era. However, the temporal and spatial characteristics of island ecological quality, including variation arising from anthropogenic perturbations, climate change effects, and spatiotemporal heterogeneity, are rarely given serious attention. This study compares Xiamen Island and Kinmen Island, two neighboring islands with pronounced differences in urban density, adopting a Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI) to describe the spatiotemporal differences in island ecological quality. The results show that the RSEI was positively correlated with greenness and humidity and negatively correlated with heat and dryness. Despite the fact that Xiamen Island has experienced extensive urban expansion and rapid population growth, its ecological quality has remained stable and even improved slightly, which mainly due to scientific urban planning. Despite the ecological advantages of its less urban setting, Kinmen Island has suffered reduced ecological quality due to deterioration of natural conditions, climate warming, and increasing human activity. These research findings provide empirical evidence for the need for scientific and systematic urban planning in high-density urban areas and serves as an important reference for planners and decision-makers for effective improvement in the ecological quality of Kinmen Island.</p>

Abstract:The current transformation of the countryside in the rural hinterland of Chinese city regions faces challenges in conserving an extensive architectural and landscape heritage. The villages situated in these regions represent the historical core of metropolitan areas. By examining the hinterland territories, we can readily recognize the features of the Chinese urban-rural continuum that G. W. Skinners has defined in his studies spanning from the 1940s to the 1970s on rural marketing networks, cities, and the hierarchy of the local system. These local systems present a morphology that continually adapts to geographical and cultural contexts, offering rich architectural and rural urbanism solutions that seamlessly harmonize the urban and rural functions. Today, this part of the settlement is extremely vulnerable to the pressure of urban expansion as towns evolve into cities and cities transform into metropolitan regions. The conventional top-down planning practice in these areas lacks innovative tools capable of integrating both “urban” and “rural” features simultaneously. Scholars such as M. Davis and G. Guldin have recognized the Chinese hybrid rural-urban settlement as a potentially “new form of settlement for humanity” (Guldin, 1997). In this article, we present a holistic design approach aimed at shaping this hybrid settlement into a “green city,” applying the model we first used in 2010 – 2013 in Huiyang in the Pearl River Delta, a region characterized by Hakka villages territorial system, to two other cases in city regions: Pidu in the Chengdu metropolitan area and Kandun in the Ningbo metropolitan area. These regions are characterized by their respective Lin Pan and Seawalls territorial systems, which we have more recently studied. The aim of the paper is to illustrate how drawing inspiration from local countryside architecture and rural urbanism enables the development of individual planning solutions as an alternative to the current planning practice in peri-urban rural areas, which tends to homogenize countryside landscapes to urban blocks.

Abstract:The background, concept, connotation, principles, and methods of eco-planning for an Eco-Demonstration Park (EDP) and sustainability were examined based on a case study of the Luhua EDP in the Chongming Island of Shanghai, China, which is an important part of Shanghai Eco-city planning and construction in the 21st century. By analyzing natural, social and economic conditions, calculating population using the land capacity eco-model, eco-function zoning, and eco-construction, an innovative eco-industrial structure and technical chain were formulated. A comprehensive eco-planning scheme for the EDP was proposed, including planning and management strategies for subsystems of efficient industry, good quality human settlement, high standard eco-construction and eco-tourism as well as effective environmental protection and attractive landscape. The EDP should be an area with coordinated and sustainable economic, social and environmental subsystems. Eco-planning for the EDP should be a very important part of eco-city planning and sustainability. The paper aims to set up a theoretical framework and practical basis for eco-planning and promoting harmony between human and nature.
Eco-districts in France: What Tools to Ensure Goals Achievement?

Abstract:Globally, to build cities and communities more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable is one of the most important sustainable development goals. Eco-districts in cities emerged as an answer to current global environmental concerns and have been developed in France since the 1990s. The objective of this work is to gather operational feedback from sustainable neighborhood projects owners to better understand the key barriers of such projects and how to overcome them. A case study of the eco-district Les Tanneries, Lingolsheim showed that the carbon footprint of each inhabitant annually amounted to 4 tons CO2 equivalent, more than half of the French average. Rooms for improvements were clearly identified regarding transports and food carbon footprint. Indicators for energy consumption, social diversity and density reached the level of the eco-districts average. A governance review pointed out some superior practices such as the formalization of a specification requirements handbook, a competition between project management teams, and the use of neighborhood sustainability assessment tools to measure and track changes in performance. The validated tools and obtained results can be useful in building sustainable cities and even China’s ecological civilization.

Abstract:In this paper, participation is regarded as an essential strategy in the process of eco-vilage design. I try to research the theory of space production from Lefebvre and dialectical utopia from David Harvey while explaining the relationship among environment contamination, production expansion and globalisation. In this process, as Foucault said, " the 'fascism that reigns in our heads' is far more insidious than anything that gets constructed outside". Thus, I analyse economic development approach in this day and age and study how to apply participatory strategy to construct an appropriate living space and how to apply this principle to improve urban environmental quality.

Abstract:In recent years, the study of production-living-ecological space has progressively expanded from urban to rural areas. With the onset of a new era in rural development, diverse requirements for rural landscapes have emerged. Consequently, rural landscape planning in this new era is incorporating the three-pillar conception of sustainability. Island villages, with their distinct natural ecology and marine resources compared to inland villages, offer unique conditions, resulting in the production of diversified landscape types with significant development potential. Despite the limited attention given to the domestic development of island villages, this paper delves into the analysis of the three-pillar conception of sustainability and explores landscape protection strategies and renewal modes specific to island villages. To illustrate these concepts, East Xiaoqing Island Village in Rushan City, Weihai City serves as a case study.

Abstract:The expansion of the global tourism market has accelerated the development of small tourist islands. The rapid growth of tourist scale and activity intensity poses a potential threat to the fragile ecosystems of small islands. This article focuses on the ecological stresses small tourism islands face in their development. Compared with similar studies, we found a more flexible way to measure ecological stress of current activities. We show a framework for ecological stress assessment on small rural islands and illustrate it with Weizhou Island, China. It reveals a new approach to combining ecological footprint, geographic data, and visitor activity data. This combination enables a spatial linkage between biophysical and social surveys. To verify the validity of the assessment framework, we assessed the spatial distribution of ecosystem loss on the island using habitat quality. A multi‐scale geographically weighted model describes the spatial correlation between ecological stress and habitat quality. Real‐world application cases were used to test the usability and practical use of the policy assessment framework. We provide methodological and application‐based contributions to support the sustainable development of small tourist islands. Overall, the assessment framework offers a reliable solution for systematically collecting, analyzing, and reporting ecological stresses faced by small tourist islands.
