Abstract:Nantong is child of modernization in early Chinese history. Different from concessions commercial ports or cities developed from occupation by Great Powers Nantong first such representative city is to some extent simultaneously creatively and comprehensively planned constructed and managed by Chinese and on their own ideas. From this perspective Nantong is entitled to the first city in modern China. The proposal of this thesis is neither result of a hasty conclusion on impulse nor a satisfaction of resting on laurels it still demands further study and reflection as it is not only a matter of Nantong city's but also a part of long-term exploration on road of Chinese city construction.
