Abstract:Highly loaded cobalt catalysts (80% by weight) with different supports (SiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2 and MgO) were prepared by the co-precipitation technique for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Microcalorimetric adsorptions of NH3, CO2, CO and H2 showed that the surface acidity/basicity significantly affected the surface properties of supported Co, as evidenced by the changes of strengths of adsorption of CO and H2 on Co, which in turn affected the FTS performance. The appropriate ratio (~1.2) of heats for the adsorption of CO and H2 on Co seemed important in determining the FTS activity.

Abstract:Cobalt (Co) is widely used in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS), converting synthesis gas, carbon monoxide + hydrogen (CO + H 2 ), to long-chain hydrocarbons. The adsorption of CO on the Co surface is the key step in FTS. In this work, the effect of CO adsorption sites on the reactions between CO and H 2 was investigated by using density functional theory (DFT). The energetics and structures of the reactions between the adsorbed CO (CO*) and H 2 /adsorbed H 2 (H 2 *)/adsorbed H atom (H*) were calculated. The results show that the reaction between CO* and H 2 is initiated by the molecular adsorption of H 2 on the Co surface. The reactions between CO* and H 2 */H* are influenced by CO adsorption sites. For the reaction system of CO* + H 2 *, it has the lowest reaction barrier when CO is adsorbed at the hcp site, while for CO* + H*, it has the lowest reaction barrier when CO is adsorbed on the top site. Kinetic analysis indicates that to improve the reactivity of CO + H 2 in FTS, the adsorption of CO should be controlled to favour the top and bridge sites. Boron Adsorption and Its Effect on Stability and CO Activation of Χ-Fe5c2 Catalyst: an Ab Initio DFT Study

Abstract:Developing advanced Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) technology to acquire fuel and valuable chemicals from non-petroleum sources more efficiently is one of the important tasks in heterogeneous catalysis and chemical engineering research. With the purpose of improving iron-based FTS catalyst, we explored the modification effect of boron on the χ-Fe5C2 catalyst by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Boron atom adsorption on χ-Fe5C2 surfaces is considered to modulate the stability as well as the activity of CO activation on FTS process. Anti-coking can be observed when boron atom adsorbs on χ-Fe5C2 catalyst due to the competitive adsorption and repulsive interactions between carbon and boron atoms. More open and active planes, such as (311), (021), and (312̅) facets, can expose in the morphology of χ-Fe5C2 when boron atom adsorbs on χ-Fe5C2. It is found that co-adsorbed boron atoms have little effect on the barrier of CO direct dissociation in most cases, while there is also particular situation that CO is adsorbed and activated on boron with carbon termination. Our work shed light on the promoting effects of boron adsorption on CO activation, which can provide useful guide for the design of novel iron-based FTS catalysts.

Abstract:Fischer–Tropsch synthesis over CoMn oxides is a surface-catalyzed structure-sensitive reaction. Active site changes greatly alter product distribution. The dynamics and essence of the changes in Co species during the reaction have seldom been explored. Herein, multiple characterizations were applied to confirm that two types of active sites, i.e., Co and Co2C, coexist on CoMnO x under the reaction conditions. Apart from the direct participation of carbon species in the reaction, the steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis also suggested the mutual transformation of carbon species in Co2C. The ratio of the two paths altered with the temperature, thus leading to Co2C-rich and Co-rich surfaces at intermediate and high temperatures, respectively. Kinetic calculations and microkinetic modeling showed that Co2C-rich surfaces facilitated CO adsorption and suppressed hydrogen adsorption. This gave high carbon-chain growth activity. The Co-rich surfaces showed high vacancy and hydrogen coverages, lowering the CO activation and CH4 formation energies.

Abstract:CO2 hydrogenation reaction was performed on precipitated iron catalysts which werepromoted by Si, Zn, K and Cu. The optimum SiO2 content in thecatalysts is about 15 wt% relative to Fe2O3 mass. Withreaction temperature raised, CO2 conversion is increased continually,but CO and CH4 selectivity only fluctuate in a narrow range which isbeneficial to the synthesis of C2+ hydrocarbons. Two kinds ofcatalyst filling constitution were experimentally compared in order to increasethe yield of C5+ hydrocarbons.

It was shown that the structure, reduction behavior of iron species, and catalytic properties of the catalysts were obviously affected by the preparation methods. For the Fe2O3/ZrO2 catalyst prepared by the impregnation method, the Fischer-Tropsch catalytic activity and the selectivity to light olefins were much higher than those of the corresponding catalyst prepared by the coprecipitation method, the formation of methane was suppressed and the selectivity to light olefins was enhanced. Various intermediates formed during the successive steps of reduction of the catalysts were studied by using temperature-programmed reduction combined with in situ Mossbauer spectroscopy. The role of zirconia in the catalysts was discussed.

Abstract:The increasing demand for clean fuels and sustainable products has attracted much interest in the development of active and selective catalysts for CO conversion to desirable products. This review maps the theoretical progress of the different facets of most commercial catalysts, including Co, Fe, Ni, Rh, and Ru. All relevant elementary steps involving CO dissociation and hydrogenation and their dependence on surface structure, surface coverage, temperature, and pressure are considered. The dominant Fischer–Tropsch synthesis mechanism is also explored, including the sensitivity to the structure of H-assisted CO dissociation and direct CO dissociation. Low-coordinated step sites are shown to enhance catalytic activity and suppress methane formation. The hydrogen adsorption and CO dissociation mechanisms are highly dependent on the surface coverage, in which hydrogen adsorption increases, and the CO insertion mechanism becomes more favorable at high coverages. It is revealed that the chain-growth probability and product selectivity are affected by the type of catalyst and its structure as well as the applied temperature and pressure.

Abstract:Understanding and modulating the dynamic structural evolution is of great significance in developing high-performance heterogeneous catalysts. This work investigates the effect of potassium (K) promoter on the carburization and oxidation of Fe phases during CO 2 hydrogenation over an iron-based catalyst using in-situ X-ray diffraction, in-situ infrared spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed techniques. The addition of K enhances CO 2 adsorption of the catalyst, promotes the reaction of CO 2 with the dissociated hydrogen, and accelerates the carburization of Fe(0) to Fe 3 C and then to Fe 5 C 2 . In addition to impacting the reactive microenvironment of the catalyst surface on the competitive adsorption and reactions, the addition of K also prevents the active Fe 5 C 2 phase from oxidation during CO 2 hydrogenation. With an optimized content of K and CO pretreatment, the iron-based catalysts were endowed with high catalytic activity for CO 2 conversion to C 2 -C 4 olefins and C 5+ long-chain hydrocarbons. This work provides insight into the correlation between the reactive microenvironment and the structural evolution of Fe catalysts doped with K promoter and shall be beneficial for future development of new catalytic materials for CO 2 hydrogenation, and possibly other reactions.

Abstract:Direct hydrogenation of CO 2 to liquid hydrocarbons via modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis represents an appealing and sustainable route for efficient CO 2 utilization. However, the selective production of liquid hydrocarbons remains a significant challenge. In this work, we designed a series of carbon-coated K/Fe-C catalysts with various K loadings (ranging from 0 to 8 wt%) that enhance C 5+ hydrocarbon selectivity during CO 2 hydrogenation. It is found that the 4 K/Fe-C catalyst exhibits the highest C 5+ selectivity of 54.78 % at CO 2 conversion of 32.40 % and good stability within 100 h time-on-stream. This is attributed to the high dispersion of the Fe nanoparticles and the confinement effect of porous carbon matrix on the aggregation of Fe nanoparticles, resulting in high catalytic activity and selectivity. Meanwhile, the well dispersed K on the porous carbon matrix can reduce the particle size of Fe nanoparticles and promote the production of iron carbide active species for CO 2 -FTS, thus facilitating the selective formation of C 5+ hydrocarbons. Moreover, we also discussed a possible reaction mechanism for the direct hydrogenation of CO 2 to C 5+ hydrocarbons over the K/Fe-C catalysts. This study provides deep insights into the design of efficient Fe-C catalysts for converting CO 2 to liquid hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Iron-based Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalyst is widely used for syngas conversion, but its iron carbide active phase is easily oxidized into Fe 3 O 4 by the water produced during reaction, leading to the deterioration of catalytic performance. Here, we show an efficient strategy for protecting the iron carbide active phase of FTS catalyst by surface hydrophobization. The hydrophobic surface can reduce the water concentration in the core vicinity of catalyst during syngas conversion, and thus inhibit the oxidation of iron species by water, which enhances the C − C coupling ability of catalyst and promotes the formation of long-chain olefins. More significantly, it is unraveled that appropriate shell thickness plays a crucial role in stabilizing the iron carbide active phase without Fe 3 O 4 formation and achieving good catalytic performance.

Mechanistic Insight into Hydrocarbon Synthesis via CO2 Hydrogenation on χ-Fe5C2 Catalysts

Abstract:Converting CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels is one of the promising approaches to alleviate CO2 emissions, reduce the dependence on nonrenewable energy resources, and minimize the negative environmental effect of fossil fuels. This work used density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with microkinetic modeling to provide fundamental insight into the mechanisms of CO2 hydrogenation to hydrocarbons over the iron carbide catalyst, with a focus on understanding the energetically favorable pathways and kinetic controlling factors for selective hydrocarbon production. The crystal orbital Hamiltonian population analysis demonstrated that the transition states associated with O-H bond formation steps within the path are less stable than those of C-H bond formation, accounting for the observed higher barriers in O-H bond formation from DFT. Energetically favorable pathways for CO2 hydrogenation to CH4 and C2H4 products were identified which go through an HCOO intermediate, while the CH* species was found to be the key C1 intermediate over χ-Fe5C2(510). The microkinetic modeling results showed that the relative selectivity to CH4 is higher than C2H4 in CO2 hydrogenation, but the trend is opposite under CO hydrogenation conditions. The major impact on C2 hydrocarbon production is attributed to the high surface coverage of O* from CO2 conversion, which occupies crucial active sites and impedes C-C couplings to C2 species over χ-Fe5C2(510). The coexistence of iron oxide and carbide phases was proposed and the interfacial sites created between the two phases impact CO2 surface chemistry. Adding potassium into the Fe5C2 catalyst accelerates O* removal from the carbide surface, enhances the stability of the iron carbide catalyst, thus, promotes C-C couplings to hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Titania-supported iron oxide catalyst has been designed based on a geometric consideration. The catalyst prepared by reducing the precursor obtained from incipient wetness impregnation in H2 at proper temperature exhibits good activity (CO2 conversion >24%) and selectivity (>60%) in the selective synthesis of hydrocarbons (C2–C5) from CO2 and H2. The catalytic activity has been found to vary with iron weight loadings in a “twin maxima” fashion and, also, to be affected by the reduction temperature. Mössbauer and EXAFS analyses suggest that the active phase is coordinatively unsaturated ferrous cations associated with α-Fe. Alternative arrangement of the two phases in a proper way is beneficial to relax the Fe-O bonds and results in the highest catalytic activity for the catalyst, but the formation of predominantly FeTiO3 phase finally makes the catalyst inactive.

Abstract:The effect of co-feeding CO2 on the catalytic properties of an Fe–Mn catalyst during Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) was investigated in a spinning basket reactor by varying added CO2 partial pressure in the feed gas. It was found that co-feeding CO2 to syngas did not decrease the activity of the catalyst, on the contrary, a dramatic increase of the activity and an increase of methane selectivity were observed over the catalyst after removal of CO2 from the feed gas. The addition of CO2 led to an increase in olefin/paraffin ratios of low carbon hydrocarbons and a slight decrease in C19+ selectivity. It also slightly decreased CO2 formation rate on the catalyst by increasing the rate of reverse step of the water–gas shift (WGS) reaction and pushing the reaction towards equilibrium, and did not remarkably influence the hydrocarbon formation rate. However, the co-feeding CO2 can significantly increase the water formation rate and the overall oxygenate formation rate under these reaction conditions.
Effects of Different Reductive Agents on Zn-Promoted Iron Oxide Phases in the CO2–Fischer–Tropsch to Linear α-Olefins

Abstract:The pretreatment atmosphere has a significant impact on the performance of iron-based catalysts in carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation. In this study, we investigated the effects of carbon monoxide (CO), syngas (H2/CO), and hydrogen (H2) on the performance of iron-based catalysts during the pretreatment process. To evaluate the structural changes in catalysts after activation and reaction, we analyzed their morphology and particle size, the surface and bulk phase composition, carbon deposition, the desorption of linear α-olefins and reaction intermediates using transmission electron microscope (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MES), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). Raman and XPS showed that the H2 pretreatment catalyst caused the absence of iron carbides due to the lack of carbon source, and the CO and syngas pretreatment catalysts promoted the formation of carbon deposits and iron carbides. While the bulk phase of the CO and syngas pretreatment catalyst mainly consists of iron carbide (FeCx), XRD and MES revealed that the bulk phase of the H2 pretreatment catalyst primarily consisted of metallic iron (Fe) and iron oxide (FeOx). The composition of the phase is closely associated with its performance at the initial stage of the reaction. The formation of olefins and C5+ products is more encouraged by CO pretreatment catalysts than by H2 and syngas pretreatment catalysts, according to in situ DRIFTS evidence. Ethylene (C2H4)/propylene (C3H6)-TPD indicates that the CO pretreatment catalyst is more favorable for the desorption of olefins which improves the olefins selectivity. Based on the analysis of the TEM images, H2 pretreatment stimulated particle agglomeration and sintering. In conclusion, the results show that the CO-pretreatment catalyst has higher activity due to the inclusion of more FeOX and Fe3C. In particular, the presence of Fe3C was found to be more favorable for the formation of olefins and C5+ hydrocarbons. Furthermore, carbon deposition was relatively mild and more conducive to maintaining the balance of FeOx/FeCx on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:CO 2 hydrogenation to chemicals and fuels has the potential to alleviate CO 2 emissions and displace fossil resources simultaneously via consecutive RWGS and FTS reactions, also known as CO 2 -FTS. As Fe-based catalysts are active and selective for both reactions, their bifunctionality requires a delicate balance between the RWGS and FTS. In this work, we investigated the thermodynamic constraints of RWGS and CO 2 -FTS, the influence of CO 2 conversion on selectivity and the influence of Fe nanoparticle size within the range of 4.7 to 10.3 nm. An inert carbon support was selected to rule out metal-support interaction and promoting effects of the support. Catalytic performance was evaluated at 300 °C, 11 bar, H 2 /CO 2 /Ar = 3/1/1, 600 to 72000 mL·g cat - 1 ·h - 1 . At a CO 2 conversion level below RWGS equilibrium conversion of 23 %, RWGS was found to be the primary and dominant reaction. No primary Sabatier reaction was observed. At higher CO 2 conversion till the CO 2 -FTS threshold of 42 %, the secondary FTS reaction became dominant. Notably, a non-linear relation between CO 2 conversion and CO selectivity was discovered. Comparing two catalysts with identical 5 wt% Fe loading but different average Fe nanoparticle size (6.6 and 8.4 nm), the 8.4 nm Fe catalyst was at least two times more active than the 6.6 nm Fe catalyst. In situ Mössbauer spectroscopy suggested a positive correlation between particle size, carburization and selectivity towards long-chain hydrocarbons. For these potassium-promoted carbon-supported Fe-based catalysts, nanoparticles of at least 8 nm are required for the formation of Fe carbides and improved reactivity.

Abstract:Highly loaded Co/SiO2 catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation technique with an n-butanol drying process for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). With the increase in cobalt loading from 20% to 80%, the FTS activity of the catalysts increased greatly. The addition of ZrO2 improved the dispersion of cobalt and promoted the adsorption of H2 and CO on cobalt. The preadsorbed H atoms significantly enhanced the adsorption of CO and C2H4, especially on cobalt promoted by ZrO2. While the adsorption of C2H4 onto clean cobalt led to the formation of ethylidyne, π- and di-σ-bonded C2H4 might form on the CO-preadsorbed 80%Co/SiO2 and 80%Co–8%ZrO2/SiO2, respectively. The presence of ZrO2 strengthened the bonding of molecularly adsorbed ethylene and increased its uptake on CO-preadsorbed cobalt, which might be why the 80%Co–8%ZrO2/SiO2 exhibited such high activity for the hydrogenation of CO to heavy hydrocarbons.
The role of H2 in Fe carburization by CO in Fischer-Tropsch catalysts

Abstract:The formation of Fe-carbide phases is relevant to the synthesis of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts. We investigated the carburization of Raney Fe as a model catalyst using spectroscopic and temperature-programmed techniques. IR spectroscopy shows that CO dissociation already occurs at −150 °C, while C diffusion into metallic Fe requires much higher temperature (~180 °C). The carburization rate increases with increasing H2/CO ratio, which can be attributed to the lower overall barrier for O removal as H2O as compared to CO2. O removal frees vacancies that are needed for CO dissociation. The resulting higher C coverage increases the driving force for Fe-carbide formation. A higher driving force leads to predominant formation of the more carbon-rich ε(́)-carbide, while χ-Fe5C2 is formed at lower H2/CO ratio. The removal of surface O appears to be the rate-limiting step under all conditions. Initially, most of deposited C is used for Fe-carbide formation with a small contribution to hydrocarbons formation.

Abstract:The removal of surface oxygen adsorbed on iron carbides is essential to protect the nanoparticle from oxidation in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we explored the removal of pre-adsorbed oxygen on seven facets of χ-Fe5C2, and four pathways including both direct and indirect routes for generating H2O and CO2 were investigated. The removal mechanism shows diversity over different facets. On (010), the formation of CO2 through the reaction between surface oxygen and adsorbed CO is more favorable. While on (510), (001), (110), (11-1) and (-411), the elimination in the form of H2O through OH disproportionation dominates. In particular, surface oxygen can be removed facilely either in H2O or CO2 on (111) surface. What's more, surface with more carbons exhibits higher barriers to direct CO2 formation, like (110) and (111). Our work provides knowledge about mechanism of O removal and CO2 formation, which may be helpful in protecting the nanoparticle from further oxidation.

Abstract:Identifying the dynamic structure of heterogeneous catalysts is crucial for the rational design of new ones. In this contribution, the structural evolution of Fe(0) catalysts during CO 2 hydrogenation to hydrocarbons has been investigated by using several (quasi) in situ techniques. Upon initial reduction, Fe species are carburized to Fe 3 C and then to Fe 5 C 2 . The by-product of CO 2 hydrogenation, H 2 O, oxidizes the iron carbide to Fe 3 O 4 . The formation of Fe 3 O 4 @(Fe 5 C 2 +Fe 3 O 4 ) core-shell structure was observed at steady state, and the surface composition depends on the balance of oxidation and carburization, where water plays a key role in the oxidation. The performance of CO 2 hydrogenation was also correlated with the dynamic surface structure. Theoretical calculations and controll experiments reveal the interdependence between the phase transition and reactive environment. We also suggest a practical way to tune the competitive reactions to maintain an Fe 5 C 2 -rich surface for a desired C 2+ productivity.
