Abstract:A novel heterogeneous strong acid catalyst has been synthesized through the copolymerization of p -toluenesulfonic acid and paraformaldehyde with sulfuric acid as catalyst. The novel catalyst owns the strong acidity as much as 4.0 mmol/g, while Nafion and Amberlyst-15 only has the acidity of about 0.8 mmol/g. Furthermore, the catalyst possesses the advantages of the high thermal stability (200 °C) and low cost for the simple synthetic procedure. The catalytic activities of the novel catalyst were taken through esterification of acetic acid and ethanol and acetalization of benzolaldehyde and 1,2-ethandiol. The results showed that the novel catalyst showed much higher activities than the Amberlyst-15 and owned even the comparative activity to sulfuric acid, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the replacement of the traditional homogeneous catalyst for the green process.

Abstract:Tri-methylammonium-butane sulfonate (TMBSA) ionic liquid (IL) catalyzed efficiently acetylation of acetic anhydride with various alcohols, hydroxyesters and phenols, under solvent-free conditions was described as a novel method. [TMBSA][HSO 4 ] ionic liquid (1.0 mol%) is able to promote quantitative acetylation at low temperature, in high conversion and selectivity (≥95%). The process is highly effective, environmentally benign, and very selective. Furthermore, [TMBSA][HSO 4 ] ionic liquid was conveniently separated with the products and easily recycled to catalyze acetylation reaction again with excellent yields.

Abstract:An efficient and versatile method for the enantioselective epoxidation of both tertiary allylic and homoallylic alcohols catalyzed by Hf(IV)-bishydroxamic acid (BHA) complexes is described. Asymmetric epoxidation, kinetic resolution, and desymmetrization have been developed, demonstrating the flexible nature of the Hf(IV)-BHA system. This is the first report in which these substrates were obtained with enantioselectivities of up to 99%.

Abstract:An environmentally benign oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and metal dodecanesulfonate salts as catalysts was conducted under solvent-free condition by biphasic catalysis. Ferric tridodecanesulfonate showed excellent catalytic activity exhibiting complete conversion of benzyl alcohol with 194.4mol/molcat turnover number (TON) and nearly 100% selectivity to benzaldehyde at ambient pressure and 90°C. This catalyst can be recovered and reused for three times without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity.

Abstract:An array of novel 1,4-diazobicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) based ionic liquids were developed and used as recyclable catalysts for the aza-Michael addition at room temperature without any organic solvent. [DABCO-PDO][OAc] was found to be the most efficient catalyst, and the amount of catalyst was only 10 mol %. Various amines reacted with a wide range of α,β-unsaturated amides, smoothly affording target products in good to excellent yields within hours. Moreover, the catalyst could be reused up to eight times, still maintaining a high catalytic activity. Finally, a plausible mechanism was proposed. FTIR and computational chemistry were used to verify the catalytic mechanism.

Abstract:The selective catalytic C-N bond cleavage of amides into value-added amine products is a desirable but challenging transformation. Molecules containing iminodibenzyl motifs are prevalent in pharmaceutical molecules and functional materials. Here we established a combined KOH/BEt3 catalyst for deaminative hydroboration of acyl-iminodibenzyl derivatives, including nonheterocyclic carboxamides, to the corresponding amines. This novel transition-metal-free methodology was also applied to the construction of Clomipramine and luminophores.

Abstract:The supported boron trifluoride (BF3/HY) solid acid catalyst was synthesized, resulting in a uniform dispersion of BF3 on the HY support. The combination of Lewis acid center and hydroxyl group on the surface of HY made BF3/HY shown Brønsted acidity. Functioning as the microporous catalyst, remarkable catalytic efficiency in facilitating ring-opening of epoxides was detected, and different alkyl- and aryl-substituted aldehydes could be obtained with exceptional yields and selectivity. Furthermore, BF3/HY was easy to be separated from the reaction system and the recyclability of this catalytic material was proved by recycle experiments. Since the catalyst was safe, stable and exhibited excellent reactivity, it could be effectively utilized in the synthesis of valuable intermediates in chemical industry.

Abstract:A solid acid catalyst has been prepared by grafting Boron trifluoride on mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 and characterized by XRD and FTIR techniques. The XRD and FTIR results indicated that the BF3 • Et2O interlocks with the silicon groups of MCM-41 surface to form strong solid acid. The solid acid catalyst would effectively promote the opening of epichlorohydrin with isobutanol to form 1-isobutoxy-3-chloropropanol, and showed a nice activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Developing an effective and selective catalyst for epoxide hydration under low water/epoxide ratios and atmos-pheric pressure is still a challenge. Through tuning the anion, azolate ILs with different basicities were used in the hydration of epoxides. The results showed that the basicity has a great effect on conversion and selectivity, where [Emim][Triz] exhibited high conversion and selectivity under 1 bar CO2, leading to the yield of 99%. Furthermore, these ionic liquids could be used four times and retain good catalytic activity. Spectroscopic investigations, isotope labeling experiments, and quantum chemical calculations indicated that high yield was derived from synergetic catalysis by an azolate ionic liquid, which was more favorable than the hydration process catalyzed by bromine and organic bases.

Abstract:We herein report the oxidative α-azidation of carbonyl compounds by using NaN 3 in the presence of dibenzoyl peroxide catalyzed by tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI). By utilizing these readily available bulk chemicals a variety of cyclic β-ketocarbonyl derivatives can be efficiently α-azidated under operationally simple conditions. Control experiments support a mechanistic scenario involving in situ formation of an ammonium hypoiodite species which first facilitates the α-iodination of the pronucleophile, followed by a phase-transfer-catalyzed nucleophilic substitution by the azide. Furthermore, we also show that an analogous α-nitration by using NaNO 2 under otherwise identical conditions is possible as well.

Abstract:We present the synthesis and characterization of a new Cu(I) complex supported on SBA‐15 as a catalyst for preparing anilines from the reaction of aryl halides with sodium azide. The SBA‐15 support was modified by treating it sequentially with (3‐aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES), cyanuric chloride, and 2‐aminothiazole (AT). The modified mesoporous silica, SBA‐15@BAT, was then treated with a CuI solution in acetonitrile to give SBA‐15@BAT‐Cu(I). The catalyst underwent thorough characterization using conventional methods. X‐Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis corroborated the presence of copper in the +1 oxidation state in the catalyst. The supported Cu(I) complex sufficiently catalyzed the amination reaction of iodo‐, bromo‐, and chloroarenes with NaN3. The catalyst was centrifuged, washed, and applied in the subsequent run. We investigated the effects of various reaction components and parameters to determine the optimal conditions for the reaction. The heterogeneous catalyst exhibited noticeable stability and was reused over seven runs with slight deactivation.

Abstract:A metathesis reaction between unsolvated NaB(3)H(8) and NH(4)Cl provides a simple and high-yield synthesis of NH(4)B(3)H(8). Structure determination through X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis reveals weak N-H(δ+)---H(δ-)-B interaction in NH(4)B(3)H(8) and strong N-H(δ+)---H(δ-)-B interaction in NH(4)B(3)H(8)·18-crown-6·THF adduct. Pyrolysis of NH(4)B(3)H(8) leads to the formation of hydrogen gas with appreciable amounts of other volatile boranes below 160 °C. Hydrolysis experiments show that upon addition of catalysts, NH(4)B(3)H(8) releases up to 7.5 materials wt % hydrogen.

Abstract:Debenzylation of O‐ and N‐benzyl groups was achieved under safe and mild conditions by using B2(OH)4 as an alternative to gaseous hydrogen in the presence of an amphiphilic polystyrene–poly(ethylene glycol) resin‐supported nano‐palladium catalyst (ARP‐Pd) in water. Benzyl groups of a variety of benzylic ethers, esters, carbamates, and amines, including benzyl‐protected carbohydrates and amino acids, were reductively removed in high yields. ARP‐Pd was recovered by simple filtration and reused seven times without a significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:A series of metal ion (M = Sn2+, Fe3+, Ni2+, Co2+, Ag+, Cu2+) exchanged tungstophosphoric acid (H3PW12O40; TPA) catalysts with tunable BrOnsted/Lewis acidity were synthesized and exploited for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BzOH) to benzaldehyde (BzH) using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as oxidant. The structure of these M-TPA composite salts was also characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and solid-state 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probe molecule method. Among these M-TPAs, the Sn1/2H2PW12O40 catalyst, which presented strong Bronsted acidity, the synergistic effect of Bronsted/Lewis and pseudo-liquid characteristic property, exhibited excellent catalytic activity and durability with 98.2% of BzH selectivity and 95.1% of BzH yield. The optimal conditions for the oxidation of BzOH optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) were as follows: n(BzOH)/n(H2O2) = 1:1.25, catalyst amount of 5.5 wt.% to BzOH, water amount of 17 mL, 3.3 h of reaction time, and temperature 393 K. Moreover, further kinetic study confirmed that the reaction order was 2.64 and the activation energy was 21.75 kJ mol(-1).

Abstract:An SBA-15 loaded CuSO 4 catalyst was designed and prepared for the highly selective production of 2,6-di- tert -butyl- p -cresol (BHT) from p -cresol and isobutylene. The acidity of solid acid catalysts was altered by varying the loading amount of CuSO 4 . Among them, 10% CuSO 4 /SBA-15 exhibited the greatest catalytic performance in the alkylation reaction with a BHT yield of 85.5%. After four cycles, the yield of BHT exceeded 70%. Overall, the catalyst has excellent catalytic performance and can be utilized as a catalyst for efficient BHT production.

Abstract:A series of tetrabutyl ammonium (TBA) salts of V-included Keggin-type polyoxoanions with W (TBA4PW11V1O40 and TBA5PW10V2O40) and Mo (TBA4PMo11V1O40 and TBA5PMo10V2O40) as addenda atoms were prepared using a hydrothermal method. These synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance (DRS UV-Vis), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), CHN elemental analysis (EA), inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS), and N2 physisorption techniques to assess their physicochemical/textural properties and correlate them with their catalytic performances. According to FT-IR and DRS UV-Vis, (PVXW(Mo)12−XO40)(3+X)− anions are the main species present in the TBA salts. Additionally, CHN-EA and ICP-MS revealed that the desired stoichiometry was obtained. Their catalytic activities in the liquid-phase aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde were studied at 5 bar of O2 at 170 °C. Independently of the addenda atom nature, the catalytic activity increased with the number of V in the Keggin anion structure. For both series of catalysts, TBA salts of polyoxometalates with the highest V-substitution degree (TBA5PMo10V2O40 and TBA5PW10V2O40) showed higher activity. The maximum benzyl alcohol conversions obtained were 93% and 97% using (TBA)5PMo10V2O40 and (TBA)5PW10V2O40 as catalysts, respectively. In all the cases, the selectivity toward benzaldehyde was higher than 99%.

Abstract:The design of efficient nanostructured catalysts is highly desirable for promoting the hydrogenation of 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (4-CBA), which are the key process of hydrorefining of crude terephthalic acid (CTA) to pure terephthalic acid (PTA). Herein, the , and catalysts were developed and proved to be active for the selective hydrogenation of 4-CBA. As a result, the excellent 4-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid (4-HMBA) selectivity (85%) and benzoic acid (BA) selectivity (88%) were achieved on and Pt/C, respectively. In comparison with the commercial Pd/C catalyst, the catalyst exhibits excellent activity (97%) and reduces the occurrence of decarbonylation. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits excellent recyclability: the catalytic activity did not decrease significantly after four reaction cycles. In combination with detailed characterization, the catalyst has porous graphene core-shell architecture and remarkable electron transfer capacity. This work may provide some inspirations for the exploration of new PTA hydrofining catalysts.

Abstract:This paper describes the conceptual mechanism in dibenzothiophene (DBT) oxidation with hydrogen peroxide using a directly combined catalyst of quaternary ammonium bromide and phosphotungstic acid. The effect of the catalyst composition on DBT oxidation was investigated in detail and a series of different amphiphilic quaternary ammonium salts was tested, including octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (STAB), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), (1-tetradecyl)trimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). The catalyst with a proper cation is required to achieve high activity toward the sulfur compounds and to be easily separated from the system. The exact position of the amphiphilic catalyst in the interface will directly affect the resistance in the DBT mass transfer step and therefore the rate of the overall catalysis process. Further, to better understand the effect of interface properties on DBT oxidation, a comparative study was carried out in different alkanes. The reaction rates increase when the carbon number of the alkane decreases. Finally, a conceptual model was established in the DBT oxidation process based on the interaction between phosphotungstic acid (TPA) and STAB. It is suggested that the mass transfer of DBT from the organic media toward the interface, rather than the oxidized TPA phase transfer step, may be rate limiting.
