Single-port Transumbilical Laparoscopic Renal Cystectomy by Using a Self-made Port:Report of 5 Cases

Abstract:Objective To introduce the feasibility of single-port transumbilical laparoscopic renal cystectomy by using a self-made port.Methods During January 2010 to June 2010,5 cases of single-port transumbilical laparoscopic renal cystectomy were performed in our department.The single-port was made up of a latex glove and an inverted cone device of polycarbonate.A 3-cm incision was made next to the umbilicus,and the single port was then inserted with three trocars(13,5,and 11 mm) inside.Ultrasound knife and other laparoscopic instruments were used to cut the renal cyst,and the capsule wall was striped about 5 mm apart from the renal parenchyma. Results The procedure was successfully completed in all the cases with a mean operation time of 77.6 min(66-93 min),and mean blood loss of 11 ml(5-20 ml).None of the cases was converted to open operation or needed blood transfusion;their mean postoperative hospital stay was 6.2 d(5-7 d).After being discharged,the patients were followed up for 4.8 months(2-7 months),during which no complications occurred. Conclusions Single-port transumbilical laparoscopic renal cystectomy by using a self-made port is safe and feasible for surgeons who have excellent laparoscopic skills.
