On the Rationality that Presupposition Exists in Direct Inference

Abstract:In traditional logic,the problem of existential presupposition has to be considered when we evaluate a categorical reasoning.Existential presupposition means that we suppose the class that the subject or predicate refers to in a categorical sentence is a non-empty set.In other words,the two classes cannot be empty at the same time,i.e.,at least one of them should include one member.If we eliminate this supposition,some types of categorical reasoning that was valid before would no longer be deductively valid in traditional logic.In this paper,we show that we propose a logical framework to justify the existential presupposition in traditional logic from a perspective of modern logic.We extend existential presupposition not only from a reasoning based on the Square of Opposition to a categorical operation or a syllogism,but also from presupposing the subject exists to presupposing the predicate exists.
