Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate the generation of a 10-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) signal based on a directly modulated chirp-managed laser (CML), without requiring any differential encoder and optical phase modulator (PM). It shows better fiber chromatic dispersion tolerance and comparable nonlinearity tolerance, compared with a LiNbO PM-based RZ-DPSK signal using 2(31) - 1 pseudo-random bit sequence data.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated for 40 Gbit/s polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) nonreturn-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals using four-wave mixing (FWM) with angled-polarization pumps in a silicon waveguide. Five multicast channels are obtained on the generated idlers. The eye diagrams, constellation diagrams, and bit error rates (BERs) of the QPSK sequences on the two polarization states are measured for each wavelength channel. The power penalties of all these multicast QPSK sequences on x or y polarization state are less than 2.0 dB at the BER of 3 x 10(-3). (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulated vector signal adopting Mach–Zehnder-modulator-based (MZM-based) optical-carrier-suppression (OCS) intensity modulation and direct detection. The MZM is driven by a 6-GHz precoded vector signal carrying 2-Gbaud QPSK transmitter data, and biased at its minimum transmission point to realize OCS modulation. The phase of the 6-GHz precoded vector signal is 1/2 of that of the regular QPSK symbol. Only one polarization beam splitter (PBS) is needed to implement optical polarization diversity. The bit-error rate (BER) for the 2-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulated vector signal can reach the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3 after 80-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) transmission in the presence of optical dispersion compensation, and 80-km SMF-28 transmission causes no power penalty.

Abstract:Polarization insensitive wavelength conversion of a 40 Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) data signal is demonstrated using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a silicon nanowire circuit. Polarization independence is achieved using a diversity circuit based on polarization rotators and splitters, which is fabricated by a simple process on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Error-free performance is achieved with only 0.5 dB of power penalty compared to the wavelength conversion of a signal with well optimized input polarization. Additionally, data transmission over 161 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) is demonstrated at 40 Gb/s using optical phase conjugation (OPC) in the proposed circuit.

Abstract:In this experiment, we generate PAM4 signals based on a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) without DAC. Two high-speed binary OOK signals with different driving voltages are used to modulate a DP-MZM. After modulation, the intensity of the optical OOK signal in a polarization state is 0.7 times of the other. In this way, up to 200-Gbit/s PAM4 signals can be successfully generated. We also measure the BER performance of the generated PAM4 signals after 1-km dispersion shifting fiber (DSF) transmission. Based on the experimental results, the generated 160-Gbit/s PAM4 signal can be successfully transmitted over 1-km DSF, satisfying the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10 -3 . Moreover, the system can support up to 200-Gbit/s PAM4 signal transmission over 1-km DSF when satisfying the soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 × 10 -2 .

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a new scheme of generating vector millimeter-wave signals with stable frequency and polarization multiplexing by a single optical modulator. We have experimentally demonstrated the delivery of 64 Gbit/s@ 28 GHz PDM-16QAM signals in the system link was with a bit error ratio smaller than 4.2X10(-2) based on a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulation (DP-MZM) and polarization-division-multiplexing 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM-16QAM). In summary, the system has a simple structure, a high spectrum efficiency, and a greatly enhanced transmission rate, which has great application value in the future communication network of radio over fiber.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated the seamless integration of 57.2-Gb/s signal wireline transmission and 100-GHz wireless delivery adopting polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulation with 400-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) transmission and 1-m wireless delivery. The X- and Y-polarization components of optical PDM-QPSK baseband signal are simultaneously up-converted to 100 GHz by optical polarization-diversity heterodyne beating, and then independently transmitted and received by two pairs of transmitter and receiver antennas, which make up a 2x2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless link based on microwave polarization multiplexing. At the wireless receiver, a two-stage down conversion is firstly done in analog domain based on balanced mixer and sinusoidal radio frequency (RF) signal, and then in digital domain based on digital signal processing (DSP). Polarization de-multiplexing is realized by constant modulus algorithm (CMA) based on DSP in heterodyne coherent detection. Our experimental results show that more taps are required for CMA when the X- and Y-polarization antennas have different wireless distance.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme for generation and detection of a 40 Gb/s binary frequency shift keying (FSK) signal. Multispan transmission properties are numerically compared with return-to-zero (RZ) and differential phase shift keying (DPSK) formats. Experimental demonstration shows that a 40 Gb/s FSK signal is transmitted over 50 km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) with 0.8 dB penalty and over 12 dB resilience of span input power, clearly validating the feasibility of this FSK modulation scheme. Transparent wavelength conversion for a 43Gb/s RZ-FSK signal is successfully achieved by FWM in a SOA and in HNDSF. 2R regeneration is also to be purposefully observed in HNDSF which results in limited over-all penalty after 100km transmission link.
