Abstract:Metal sulfides have been utilized in many fields for their multiple electronic, optical, physical and chemical properties. It can be prepared through a low-cost and efficient method which relies on the reaction between S2− produced by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) in the treating process of sulfate-containing wastewater and metal ions. These kinds of metal sulfides regulated by biomineralization possess promising application prospective for their photoelectrochemical and energy storage properties. In this study, three series of sulfide for Cu2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ were prepared at pH values of 2.5–6.5. The corresponding properties of them were also determined. Results showed that metal sulfides prepared at diverse pH values were all nanoscale and low pH was more conducive to the precipitation of metal sulfides as well as the formation of crystals. Furthermore, a possible mechanism for biomineralization of SRB in preparing metal sulfides was proposed. It also should be noted that ZnS prepared in this study can efficiently photocatalyze the degradation of the pesticide Dicamba while CuS was more suitable for preparing lithium batteries as anode materials. This study not only provides a clean pathway to prepare metal sulfides but also helps us fully understand the properties of metal sulfides regulated by biomineralization of SRB which provides precondition for their practical application.
