Abstract:With the 2.16 m telescope at Beijing Astronomical Observatory, it is identified that a compact X-ray source detected by ROSAT located in the vicinity of 5′.9 from the LINER galaxy NGC4579 is a quasar with a redshift z = 0.106. A further analysis indicates that this quasar is possibly ejected from NGC4579.

Abstract:We report redshift measurements of five X-ray-emitting blue stellar objects located less than 12' from the X-ray Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516. We find these quasars to be distributed along the minor axis of the galaxy and to show a very good correlation between their redshift and their angular distance from NGC 3516. Moreover, the redshifts of these five quasars are 0.33, 0.69, 0.93, 1.40, and 2.10, which are very near the peaks of the redshift periodicity distribution (i.e., z = 0.3, 0.6, 0.96, 1.41, and 1.96). All these observed properties strikingly confirm, around this single example of a Seyfert, the composite picture derived from previous physical associations of quasars with low-redshift active galaxies.

Abstract:The nature of X-shaped radio sources is interesting because of their possible relation to black hole mergers or the processing of binary black holes. In this paper we report the discovery of a new X-shaped radio galaxy with a partially obscured quasar nucleus. We present a detailed study of the radio morphology and the optical image and spectrum from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The optical spectrum shows prominent broad Halpha emission but very weak Hbeta emission. We interpret the large Balmer decrement as due to internal reddening and determine that the intrinsic nucleus luminosity is in the quasar range.
Discovery of a Radio-loud Narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxy at z = 0.9 Reddened with a Strong 2175 Å Bump

Abstract:We present a broadband spectrophotometric analysis of an unusual quasar, SDSS J160558.86+474300.1, at z = 0.9, found in a systematic search for reddened radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). J1605+4743 qualifies for the conventional definition of an NLS1 in its permitted emission line widths and Hβ/[O iii] flux ratio. It also shows strong Fe ii emissions. J1605+4743 has a steep radio spectrum. With a radio loudness of ∼150 (70) before (after) reddening correction, it is among the most radio-loud NLS1s discovered. In addition, the blueshifted emission lines are also found to be weak, suggesting that it can be an exotic "wind-dominated" Seyfert similar to weak-line quasars, especially the ones with strong reddening. As an extreme hybrid central engine, its environment and host galaxy become rather intriguing. We discover in it a proximate 2175 Å absorber with a bump strength similar to the average value of 2175 Å absorbers in the Milky Way, which we suspect can be intrinsic to the quasar. In addition, the quasar seems to have enhanced instead of suppressed star formation at a rate of ≳94 M ⊙ yr −1 . The combination of these unusual properties, i.e., the unique extinction, strong Fe ii and [O ii] lines, weak [O iii], Mg ii, and Balmer lines, and large radio loudness, might hold important clues to accretion physics, the formation/destruction of dust grains in the environment of active galactic nuclei, and possibly also the coevolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies in general.

Abstract:In order to check the nature of the redshifts of the quasars, six X-ray sources around the Seyfert galaxy NGC3516 have been investigated, among which five were observed spectroscopically. The results show that the six sources, S1102 + 7246, S1108 + 7226, Q1106 + 7244, Q1105 + 7242, Q1105 + 7238 and Q1107 + 7232 are active galactic nuclei. Their redshifts are 0.089, 0.328, 0.690, 1.399 and 2.10, respectively. The unique characteristics of these active galactic nuclei seem to support the non-standard cosmology model.

Abstract:Proximity zones of high-redshift quasars are unique probes of their central supermassive black holes as well as the intergalactic medium in the last stages of reionization. We present 22 new measurements of proximity zones of quasars with redshifts between 5.8 and 6.6, using the enlarged XQR-30 sample of high-resolution, high-SNR quasar spectra. The quasars in our sample have UV magnitudes of $M_{1450}\sim -27$ and black hole masses of $10^9$$\unicode{x2013}$$10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. Our inferred proximity zone sizes are 2$\unicode{x2013}$7 physical Mpc, with a typical uncertainty of less than 0.5 physical Mpc, which, for the first time, also includes uncertainty in the quasar continuum. We find that the correlation between proximity zone sizes and the quasar redshift, luminosity, or black hole mass, indicates a large diversity of quasar lifetimes. Two of our proximity zone sizes are exceptionally small. The spectrum of one of these quasars, with $z=6.02$, displays, unusually for this redshift, damping wing absorption without any detectable metal lines, which could potentially originate from the IGM. The other quasar has a high-ionization absorber $\sim$0.5 pMpc from the edge of the proximity zone. This work increases the number of proximity zone measurements available in the last stages of cosmic reionization to 87. This data will lead to better constraints on quasar lifetimes and obscuration fractions at high redshift, which in turn will help probe the seed mass and formation redshift of supermassive black holes.

Abstract:Abstract Distant quasars are unique tracers to study the formation of the earliest supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the history of cosmic reionization. Despite extensive efforts, only two quasars have been found at z ≥ 7.5, due to a combination of their low spatial density and the high contamination rate in quasar selection. We report the discovery of a luminous quasar at z = 7.642, J0313−1806, the most distant quasar yet known. This quasar has a bolometric luminosity of 3.6 × 10 13 L ⊙ . Deep spectroscopic observations reveal a SMBH with a mass of (1.6 ± 0.4) × 10 9 M ⊙ in this quasar. The existence of such a massive SMBH just ∼670 million years after the big bang challenges significantly theoretical models of SMBH growth. In addition, the quasar spectrum exhibits strong broad absorption line (BAL) features in C iv and Si iv , with a maximum velocity close to 20% of the speed of light. The relativistic BAL features, combined with a strongly blueshifted C iv emission line, indicate that there is a strong active galactic nucleus (AGN)-driven outflow in this system. Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations detect the dust continuum and [C ii ] emission from the quasar host galaxy, yielding an accurate redshift of 7.6423 ± 0.0013 and suggesting that the quasar is hosted by an intensely star-forming galaxy, with a star formation rate of ∼200 M ⊙ yr −1 and a dust mass of ∼7 × 10 7 M ⊙ . Follow-up observations of this reionization-era BAL quasar will provide a powerful probe of the effects of AGN feedback on the growth of the earliest massive galaxies.

Abstract:The redshift range from 2.2 to 3 is known as the 'redshift desert' of quasars because quasars with redshifts in this range have similar optical colors as normal stars and are thus difficult to find in optical sky surveys. A quasar candidate, SDSS J085543.40-001517.7, which was selected by a recently proposed criterion involving near-IR Y - K and optical g - z colors, was identified spectroscopically as a new quasar with a redshift of 2.427 by the Guoshoujing Telescope (LAMOST) commissioning observation in 2009 December and confirmed by the observation made with the NAOC/Xinglong 2.16m telescope in 2010 March. This quasar was not identified in the SDSS spectroscopic survey. Comparing with other SDSS quasars, we found that this new quasar, with an i magnitude of 16.44, is apparently the brightest one in the redshift range from 2.3 to 2.7. From its spectral properties, we derived its central black hole mass to be (1.4 similar to 3.9) x 10(10) M(circle dot) and its bolometric luminosity to be 3.7 x 10(48) erg s(-1), which indicates that this new quasar is intrinsically very bright and belongs to the class of the most luminous quasars in the universe. Our identification supports the notion that quasars in the redshift desert can be found by the quasar selection criterion involving the near-IR colors. More missing quasars are expected to be uncovered by future LAMOST spectroscopic surveys, which is important to the study of the cosmological evolution of quasars at redshifts higher than 2.2.
The extremely X-ray luminous radio-loud quasar CFHQS J142952+544717 at $z=6.18$ under Chandra high-angular resolution lens

Abstract:We present the first X-ray observation at sub-arcsecond resolution of the high-redshift ($z=6.18$) radio-loud quasar CFHQS J142952+544717 (J1429). The ~100 net-count 0.3-7 keV spectrum obtained from $\sim 30$ ksec Chandra exposure is best fit by a single power-law model with a photon index $\Gamma=2.0\pm0.2$ and no indication of an intrinsic absorber, implying a 3.6-72 keV rest-frame luminosity $L_{\rm X}=(2.3^{+0.6}_{-0.5})\times10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We identify a second X-ray source at 30 arcsec, distance from J1429 position, with a soft ($\Gamma\simeq 2.8$) and absorbed (equivalent hydrogen column density $N_{\rm H} <13.4\times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$) spectrum, which likely contaminated J1429 spectra obtained in lower angular resolution observations. Based on the analysis of the Chandra image, the bulk of the X-ray luminosity is produced within the central $\sim 3$ kpc region, either by the disk/corona system, or by a moderately aligned jet. In this context, we discuss the source properties in comparison with samples of low- and high-redshift quasars. We find indication of a possible excess of counts over the expectations for a point-like source in a 0.5 arcsec-1.5 arcsec ($\sim 3-8$ kpc) annular region. The corresponding X-ray luminosity at J1429 redshift is $4\times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. If confirmed, this emission could be related to either a large-scale X-ray jet, or a separate X-ray source.

Abstract:We present the first discovery of dust-reddened quasars (red quasars) in the high-z universe (z >5.6). This is a result from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, which is based on the sensitive multi-band optical imaging data produced by the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program survey. We identified four red quasar candidates from the spectroscopically confirmed 93 high-z quasars in the SHELLQs sample, based on detections in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data at 3.4 and 4.6 um (rest-frame ~5000-6500 A). The amount of dust reddening was estimated with spectral energy distribution (SED) fits over optical and mid-infrared wavelengths. Two of the four candidates were found to be red quasars with dust reddening of E(B-V) > 0.1. The remaining SHELLQs quasars without individual WISE detections are significantly fainter in the WISE bands and bluer than the red quasars, although we did detect them in the W1 band in a stacked image. We also conducted the same SED fits for high-z optically-luminous quasars, but no red quasar was found. This demonstrates the power of Subaru HSC to discover high-z red quasars, which are fainter than the limiting magnitudes of past surveys in the rest-frame ultraviolet, due to dust extinction.

Abstract:Four galaxies discovered near quasars at redshifts exceeding 6 have star-formation rates that are high enough to explain the massive elliptical galaxies known to exist at redshifts of about 4. Giant elliptical galaxies have already been observed in place at a redshift of 4. This necessitates the existence of galaxies at higher redshifts forming stars at extremely high rates, but such galaxies have hitherto not been seen. Roberto Decarli et al. report the discovery of four galaxies sitting next to the host galaxies of quasars at redshifts exceeding 6 and forming stars at the requisite rates. Simulations of galaxy and structure formation did not predict the presence of such galaxies, and they were found by accident as part of a study of quasar hosts. If these galaxies are representative of a previously unseen population, the frequency is high enough to explain the massive elliptical galaxies. The existence of massive (1011 solar masses) elliptical galaxies by redshift z ≈ 4 (refs 1, 2, 3; when the Universe was 1.5 billion years old) necessitates the presence of galaxies with star-formation rates exceeding 100 solar masses per year at z > 6 (corresponding to an age of the Universe of less than 1 billion years). Surveys have discovered hundreds of galaxies at these early cosmic epochs, but their star-formation rates are more than an order of magnitude lower4. The only known galaxies with very high star-formation rates at z > 6 are, with one exception5, the host galaxies of quasars6,7,8,9, but these galaxies also host accreting supermassive (more than 109 solar masses) black holes, which probably affect the properties of the galaxies. Here we report observations of an emission line of singly ionized carbon ([C ii] at a wavelength of 158 micrometres) in four galaxies at z > 6 that are companions of quasars, with velocity offsets of less than 600 kilometres per second and linear offsets of less than 100 kiloparsecs. The discovery of these four galaxies was serendipitous; they are close to their companion quasars and appear bright in the far-infrared. On the basis of the [C ii] measurements, we estimate star-formation rates in the companions of more than 100 solar masses per year. These sources are similar to the host galaxies of the quasars in [C ii] brightness, linewidth and implied dynamical mass, but do not show evidence for accreting supermassive black holes. Similar systems have previously been found at lower redshift10,11,12. We find such close companions in four out of the twenty-five z > 6 quasars surveyed, a fraction that needs to be accounted for in simulations13,14. If they are representative of the bright end of the [C ii] luminosity function, then they can account for the population of massive elliptical galaxies at z ≈ 4 in terms of the density of cosmic space.
An X-ray-Detected Quiescent Galaxy at $z=2.09$: Implications for the Connection between AGNs and Galaxy Quenching at High Redshift

Abstract:We report a characterization of an X-ray-detected quiescent galaxy at $z=2.09$, named COS-XQG1, using JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec data. This galaxy is detected in Chandra imaging, suggesting the presence of an AGN with a high black hole accretion rate of $\dot{M}_{\rm BH}=0.22\pm0.03\, {\rm M_\odot yr^{-1}}$. Using multi-wavelength photometry from X-ray to sub-millimeter, including the latest JWST imaging, we confirm that COS-XQG1 is massive ($M_\star = (1.6\pm0.2)\times10^{11}\, M_\odot$) and quiescent (${\rm sSFR}=(0.9\pm 1.8)\times10^{-11}\, {\rm yr^{-1}}$) as reported previously, even considering the contribution from AGN emission. Noticeably, COS-XQG1 displays a broad line H$\alpha$ emission component with a full width at half maximum of $4491^{+118}_{-110}\, {\rm km\, s^{-1}}$ in its NIRSpec spectrum. The line width and luminosity of the broad H$\alpha$ emission give a black hole mass of $\log{(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot)} = 8.45\pm0.02\, (\pm 0.5)$. With a stellar velocity dispersion measurement ($\sigma_\star=235\pm35\, {\rm km\, s^{-1}}$), we find that this galaxy is consistent with the local relations in the $M_{\rm BH} - \sigma_\star$ and $M_{\rm BH}- M_\star$ planes, which might suggest that massive quiescent galaxies at $z\geq2$ have already been mature in terms of both stellar and black hole masses and will not evolve significantly. In addition, image 2D-decomposition analysis finds that this galaxy comprises disk and point source components. The latter is likely the composition of an AGN and a stellar bulge. Based on a comparison with numerical simulations, we expect that COS-XQG1 will evolve into a typical bulge-dominated quiescent galaxy with lower AGN activity by redshift 0. This study shows the usefulness of X-ray-detected quiescent galaxies in investigating the co-evolution between SMBHs and galaxies in the early Universe.

Abstract:We report exploratory Chandra observations of the ultraluminous quasar SDSS J010013.02+280225.8 at redshift 6.30. The quasar is clearly detected by Chandra with a possible component of extended emission. The rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosity is 9.0(+4.5)(+9.1) x 10(45) erg s(-1) with an inferred photon index of G = 3.03(-0.70)(+0.78). This quasar is X-ray bright, with an inferred X-ray-to-optical flux ratio alpha(ox) = -1.22(-0.05)(+0.07), higher than the values found in other quasars of comparable ultraviolet luminosity. The properties inferred from this exploratory observation indicate that this ultraluminous quasar might be growing with super-Eddington accretion and probably viewed with a small inclination angle. Deep X-ray observations will help to probe the plausible extended emission and better constrain the spectral features for this ultraluminous quasar.

Abstract:A brief Chandra observation of the ultraluminous quasar SDSS J010013.02+280225.8 at redshift 6.326 showed it to be a relatively bright, soft X-ray source with a count rate of about 1 count ks(-1). In this article, we present results for the quasar from a 65-ks XMM-Newton observation, which constrains its spectral shape well. The quasar is clearly detected with a total of similar to 460 net counts in the 0.2-10 keV band. The spectrum is characterized by a simple power-law model with a photon index of Gamma = 2.30(-0.10)(+0.10) and the intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity is 3.14 x 10(45) erg s(-1). The 1 sigma upper limit to any intrinsic absorption column density is N-H = 6.07 x 10(22) cm(-2). No significant iron emission lines were detected. We derive an X-ray-to- optical flux ratio alpha(ox) of -1.74 +/- 0.01, consistent with the values found in other quasars of comparable ultraviolet luminosity. We did not detect significant flux variations either in the XMM-Newton exposure or between XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, which are separated by similar to 8 months. The X-ray observation enables the bolometric luminosity to be calculated after modelling the spectral energy distribution: the accretion rate is found to be sub-Eddington.

Abstract:We present ALMA [C II] 158 $\mu$m line and far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations toward HSC J120505.09$-$000027.9 (J1205$-$0000) at $z = 6.72$ with the beam size of $\sim 0''.8 \times 0''.5$ (or 4.1 kpc $\times$ 2.6 kpc), the most distant red quasar known to date. Red quasars are modestly reddened by dust, and are thought to be in rapid transition from an obscured starburst to an unobscured normal quasar, driven by powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback which blows out a cocoon of interstellar medium (ISM). The FIR continuum of J1205$-$0000 is bright, with an estimated luminosity of $L_{\rm FIR} \sim 3 \times 10^{12}~L_\odot$. The [C II] line emission is extended on scales of $r \sim 5$ kpc, greater than the FIR continuum. The line profiles at the extended regions are complex and broad (FWHM $\sim 630-780$ km s$^{-1}$). Although it is not practical to identify the nature of this extended structure, possible explanations include (i) companion/merging galaxies and (ii) massive AGN-driven outflows. For the case of (i), the companions are modestly star-forming ($\sim 10~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$), but are not detected by our Subaru optical observations ($y_{\rm AB,5\sigma} = 24.4$ mag). For the case of (ii), our lower-limit to the cold neutral outflow rate is $\sim 100~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. The outflow kinetic energy and momentum are both much smaller than what predicted in energy-conserving wind models, suggesting that the AGN feedback in this quasar is not capable of completely suppressing its star formation.

Abstract:We present results from a 20 ks XMM-Newton DDT observation of the radio-load quasar CFHQS J142952+544717 at z=6.18, whose extreme X-ray luminosity was recently revealed by the SRG/eROSITA telescope in the course of its first all-sky survey. The quasar has been confidently detected with a total of $\sim 1400$ net counts in the 0.2-10 keV energy band (1.4 to 72 keV in the object's rest frame). Its measured spectrum is unusually soft and can be described by an absorbed power-law model with a photon index of $\Gamma = 2.5\pm0.2$. There are no signs of a high-energy cutoff or reflected component, with an 90 % upper limit on the fluorescence iron K$\alpha$ equivalent width of $\approx 290$ eV and the corresponding upper limit on the iron K-edge absorption depth of 0.6. We have detected, at the $> 95\%$ confidence level, an excess absorption above the Galactic value, corresponding to a column density $N_H= 3\pm2 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ of material located at z=6.18. The intrinsic luminosity of CFHQS J142952+544717 in the 1.4 to 72 keV energy band is found to be $5.5_{-0.6}^{+0.8} \times 10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We did not detect statistically significant flux changes between two SRG scans and the XMM-Newton observation, spanning over $\sim 7.5$ months, implying that the quasar remained at this extremely high luminosity level for at least a month in its rest frame. We put forward the hypothesis that the extreme X-ray properties of CFHQS J142952+544717 are associated with inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons (at z=6.18) in its relativistic jets.

Massive Neutral Gas Outflow in Reddened Quasar SDSS J072910.34+333634.3

Abstract: SDSS J072910.34+333634.3 is a reddened quasar at z=0.96. The archivel Keck/ESI spectrum and our new P200/TripleSpec spectrum reveal an absorption line system in He I*, Ca II H\&K and Na ID. The absorption line system has a width of $\sim$600 km/s and a blueshift velocity of $\sim$800 km/s relative to the core of narrow emission lines, indicating an outflow. Using the Ca II doublet, we determined that the outflowing gas covers $\sim$70\% of the continuum. On the other hand, the HST/ACS image which taken in rest-frame 4130 \AA\ show that the fraction of the quasar emission in ESI aperture was $<$40\%. We thus conclude that the absorbing gas covers a significant fraction of extended starlight emission, and the best-estimated fraction of $\sim$50\% yields a lower limit of the crosssectional area of the outflowing gas to be $>$8 kpc$^2$. The strong Na\&Ca absorption suggests that the absorbing gas is thick and mostly neutral, which is also supported by dust extinction $A_V\sim3$. Using the best-estimated hydrogen column density $N_H\sim3\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, the total mass of the outflowing gas is $>3\times10^9 M_\odot$. The outflow is likely to be driven by AGN because of the $\sim$800 km/s blueshift velocity, suggesting SDSS J072910.34+333634.3 is undergoing one of the most violent AGN feedback we have seen. In the future, one can find more such massive neutral gas outflows in other reddened quasars using similar method, and this can shed new light on the study of AGN feedback.

Abstract:Despite extensive efforts, to date only two quasars have been found at z > 7, due to a combination of low spatial density and high contamination from more ubiquitous Galactic cool dwarfs in quasar selection. This limits our current knowledge of the super-massive black hole growth mechanism and reionization history. In this Letter, we report the discovery of a luminous quasar at z = 7.021, DELS J003836.10-152723.6 (hereafter J0038-1527), selected using photometric data from Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Legacy Imaging Survey, Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) imaging Survey, as well as Wide-field Infrared Survey Explore mid-infrared all-sky survey. With an absolute magnitude of M-1450 = -27.1 and bolometric luminosity of L-Bol = 5.6 x 10(13) L-circle dot, J0038-1527 is the most luminous quasar known at z > 7. Deep optical to near-infrared spectroscopic observations suggest that J0038-1527 hosts a 1.3 billion solar mass black hole accreting at the Eddington limit, with an Eddington ratio of 1.25 +/- 0.19. The C IV broad emission line of J0038-1527 is blueshifted by more than 3000 km s(-1) relative to the quasar systemic redshift. More detailed investigations of the high-quality spectra reveal three extremely high-velocity C IV broad absorption lines with velocity from 0.08 to 0.14 times the speed of light and total "balnicity" index of more than 5000 km s(-1), suggesting the presence of relativistic outflows. J0038-1527 is the first quasar found at the epoch of reionization with such strong outflows, and therefore provides a unique laboratory to investigate active galactic nuclei feedback on the formation and growth of the most massive galaxies in the early universe.
