Abstract:The redshift range from 2.2 to 3 is known as the 'redshift desert' of quasars because quasars with redshifts in this range have similar optical colors as normal stars and are thus difficult to find in optical sky surveys. A quasar candidate, SDSS J085543.40-001517.7, which was selected by a recently proposed criterion involving near-IR Y - K and optical g - z colors, was identified spectroscopically as a new quasar with a redshift of 2.427 by the Guoshoujing Telescope (LAMOST) commissioning observation in 2009 December and confirmed by the observation made with the NAOC/Xinglong 2.16m telescope in 2010 March. This quasar was not identified in the SDSS spectroscopic survey. Comparing with other SDSS quasars, we found that this new quasar, with an i magnitude of 16.44, is apparently the brightest one in the redshift range from 2.3 to 2.7. From its spectral properties, we derived its central black hole mass to be (1.4 similar to 3.9) x 10(10) M(circle dot) and its bolometric luminosity to be 3.7 x 10(48) erg s(-1), which indicates that this new quasar is intrinsically very bright and belongs to the class of the most luminous quasars in the universe. Our identification supports the notion that quasars in the redshift desert can be found by the quasar selection criterion involving the near-IR colors. More missing quasars are expected to be uncovered by future LAMOST spectroscopic surveys, which is important to the study of the cosmological evolution of quasars at redshifts higher than 2.2.

Abstract:Very few of the z > 5 quasars discovered to date have been radio-loud, with radio-to-optical flux ratios (radio-loudness parameters) higher than 10. Here we report the discovery of an optically luminous radio-loud quasar, SDSS J013127.34-032100.1 (J0131-0321 in short), at z = 5.18 +/- 0.01 using the Lijiang 2.4 m and Magellan telescopes. J0131-0321 has a spectral energy distribution consistent with that of radio-loud quasars. With an i-band magnitude of 18.47 and a radio flux density of 33 mJy, its radio-loudness parameter is similar to 100. The optical and near-infrared spectra taken by Magellan enable us to estimate its bolometric luminosity to be L-bol similar to 1.1 x 10(48) erg s(-1), approximately 4.5 times greater than that of the most distant quasar known to date. The black hole mass of J0131-0321 is estimated to be 2.7 x 10(9) M-circle dot, with an uncertainty up to 0.4 dex. Detailed physical properties of this high-redshift, radio-loud, potentially super-Eddington quasar can be probed in the future with more dedicated and intensive follow-up observations using multi-wavelength facilities.

Abstract:We report the discovery of 6 radio-quiet, X-ray luminous quasars with redshifts larger than 1.3. 3 of them have redshifts larger than 2. They were selected from Hamburg objective prism plates and identified by optical spectroscopic observations with the 2.16-m telescope of Beijing Astronomical Observatory. This discovery substantially increases the number of high-redshift radio-quiet, X-ray luminous quasars detected in the ROSAT All Sky Survey.

Abstract:With the 2.16 m telescope at Beijing Astronomical Observatory, it is identified that a compact X-ray source detected by ROSAT located in the vicinity of 5′.9 from the LINER galaxy NGC4579 is a quasar with a redshift z = 0.106. A further analysis indicates that this quasar is possibly ejected from NGC4579.
Discovery of a Radio-loud Narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxy at z = 0.9 Reddened with a Strong 2175 Å Bump

Abstract:We present a broadband spectrophotometric analysis of an unusual quasar, SDSS J160558.86+474300.1, at z = 0.9, found in a systematic search for reddened radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). J1605+4743 qualifies for the conventional definition of an NLS1 in its permitted emission line widths and Hβ/[O iii] flux ratio. It also shows strong Fe ii emissions. J1605+4743 has a steep radio spectrum. With a radio loudness of ∼150 (70) before (after) reddening correction, it is among the most radio-loud NLS1s discovered. In addition, the blueshifted emission lines are also found to be weak, suggesting that it can be an exotic "wind-dominated" Seyfert similar to weak-line quasars, especially the ones with strong reddening. As an extreme hybrid central engine, its environment and host galaxy become rather intriguing. We discover in it a proximate 2175 Å absorber with a bump strength similar to the average value of 2175 Å absorbers in the Milky Way, which we suspect can be intrinsic to the quasar. In addition, the quasar seems to have enhanced instead of suppressed star formation at a rate of ≳94 M ⊙ yr −1 . The combination of these unusual properties, i.e., the unique extinction, strong Fe ii and [O ii] lines, weak [O iii], Mg ii, and Balmer lines, and large radio loudness, might hold important clues to accretion physics, the formation/destruction of dust grains in the environment of active galactic nuclei, and possibly also the coevolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies in general.

Abstract:Quasars with redshifts greater than 4 are rare, and can be used to probe the structure and evolution of the early universe. Here we report the discovery of six new quasars with i-band magnitudes brighter than 19.5 and redshifts between 2.4 and 4.6 from spectroscopy with the Yunnan Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (YFOSC) at the Lijiang 2.4 m telescope in February, 2012. These quasars are in the list of z > 3.6 quasar candidates selected by using our proposed J - K/i - Y criterion and the photometric redshift estimations from the SDSS optical and UKIDSS near-IR photometric data. Nine candidates were observed by YFOSC, and five among six new quasars were identified as z > 3.6 quasars. One of the other three objects was identified as a star and the other two were unidentified due to the lower signal-to-noise ratio of their spectra. This is the first time that z > 4 quasars have been discovered using a telescope in China. Thanks to the Chinese Telescope Access Program (TAP), the redshift of 4.6 for one of these quasars was confirmed by the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) Red Channel spectroscopy. The continuum and emission line properties of these six quasars, as well as their central black hole masses and Eddington ratios, were obtained.

Abstract:Abstract Distant quasars are unique tracers to study the formation of the earliest supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the history of cosmic reionization. Despite extensive efforts, only two quasars have been found at z ≥ 7.5, due to a combination of their low spatial density and the high contamination rate in quasar selection. We report the discovery of a luminous quasar at z = 7.642, J0313−1806, the most distant quasar yet known. This quasar has a bolometric luminosity of 3.6 × 10 13 L ⊙ . Deep spectroscopic observations reveal a SMBH with a mass of (1.6 ± 0.4) × 10 9 M ⊙ in this quasar. The existence of such a massive SMBH just ∼670 million years after the big bang challenges significantly theoretical models of SMBH growth. In addition, the quasar spectrum exhibits strong broad absorption line (BAL) features in C iv and Si iv , with a maximum velocity close to 20% of the speed of light. The relativistic BAL features, combined with a strongly blueshifted C iv emission line, indicate that there is a strong active galactic nucleus (AGN)-driven outflow in this system. Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations detect the dust continuum and [C ii ] emission from the quasar host galaxy, yielding an accurate redshift of 7.6423 ± 0.0013 and suggesting that the quasar is hosted by an intensely star-forming galaxy, with a star formation rate of ∼200 M ⊙ yr −1 and a dust mass of ∼7 × 10 7 M ⊙ . Follow-up observations of this reionization-era BAL quasar will provide a powerful probe of the effects of AGN feedback on the growth of the earliest massive galaxies.
Discovery of two broad absorption line quasars at redshift about 4.75 using the Lijiang 2.4 m telescope

Abstract:The ultraviolet broad absorption lines have been seen in the spectra of quasars at high redshift, and are generally considered to be caused by outflows with velocities from thousands kilometers per second to one tenth of the speed of light. They provide crucial implications for the cosmological structures and physical evolutions related to the feedback of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Recently, through a dedicated program of optically spectroscopic identifications of selected quasar candidates at redshift 5 by using the Lijiang 2.4 m telescope, we discovered two luminous broad absorption line quasars (BALQSOs) at redshift about 4.75. One of them may even have the potentially highest absorption Balnicity Index (BI) ever found to date, which is remarkably characterized by its deep, broad absorption lines and sub-relativistic outflows. Further physical properties, including the metal abundances, variabilities, evolutions of the supermassive black holes (SMBH) and accretion disks associated with the feedback process, can be investigated with multi-wavelength follow-up observations in the future.
X-ray luminous radio-quiet high redshift QSOs in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey

Abstract:X-ray luminous radio-quiet high redshift QSOs are rare and can be used for the investigation of several important astronomical questions. We have conducted a large area survey for radio-quiet high redshift QSOs in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, from which QSO candidates are selected using the digitized objective prism spectra from the Hamburg Quasar Survey. The 22 candidates with Galactic latitudes larger than 35 degrees were observed with the 2.16m telescope at Xinglong station of Beijing Astronomical Observatory. Among the 19 new QSQs in our sample, six are radio-quiet QSOs with redshifts larger than 1.3 and three of them have redshifts larger than 2. Thus we have doubled the number of known X-ray luminous, radio-quiet high redshift QSOs in the surveyed sky area. The distribution of f(1.4) (GHz)/f(1keV) Of radio-loud and radio-quiet QSOs in this area shows two well separated peaks. This can be taken as an evidence for different emission mechanisms of the observed X-rays in the two subgroups.
Discovery of A Radio-Loud Superstrong Feii-Emitting Quasar

Abstract:We report the discovery of a new radio-loud quasar, 2MASS J015328+2609, with superstrong Fe II emission. It was found during the course of the optical identification of quasar candidates selected by matching the NRAO/VLA Sky Survey and Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm catalog and the 2MASS catalog. Several unusual properties make this object particular interesting: (1) ultraluminous near- and far-infrared (L(FIR)approximate to10(12.7) L-circle dot and L(NIR)approximate to10(12.5) L-circle dot) emission, (2) very strong optical Fe II emission (R(4570)approximate to4.35), (3) apparently blueshifted optical Fe II multiplets (several hundred km s(-1)), (4) the strongest radio emission among radio far-infrared selected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies and extreme Fe II emitters, and (5) composite Balmer lines with both narrow and broad components (the latter blueshifted by about 1000 km s(-1)). We propose that it is a moderately obscured quasi-stellar object (QSO) in a transient stage between ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) and QSO activity. Further study of this object may significantly improve our understanding of the Fe II formation mechanism and the connection between ULIRGs and QSOs.
NEWLY DISCOVERED z 5 QUASARS BASED ON DEEP LEARNING AND BAYESIAN INFORMATION CRITERION

Abstract:We report the discovery of four quasars with M-1450 greater than or similar to -25.0 mag at z similar to 5 and supermas-sive black hole mass measurement for one of the quasars. They were selected as promising high-redshift quasar candidates via deep learning and Bayesian information criterion, which are expected to be effective in discriminating quasars from the late-type stars and high-redshift galaxies. The candidates were observed by the Double Spectrograph on the Palomar 200-inch Hale Telescope. They show clear Ly alpha breaks at about 7000-8000 A, indicating they are quasars at 4.7 < z < 5.6. For HSC J233107-001014, we measure the mass of its supermassive black hole (SMBH) using its C Iv lambda 1549 emission line. The SMBH mass and Eddington ratio of the quasar are found to be similar to 10(8) M-circle dot and similar to 0.6, respectively. This suggests that this quasar possibly harbors a fast growing SMBH near the Eddington limit despite its faintness (L-Bol < 10(46) erg s(-1)). Our 100% quasar identification rate supports high efficiency of our deep learning and Bayesian information criterion selection method, which can be applied to future surveys to increase high-redshift quasar sample.

Abstract:We report the discovery of eight new quasars in one extragalactic field (five degree centered at RA=$08^h58^m08.2^s$, Dec=$01^o32'29.7''$) with the LAMOST commissioning observations on December 18, 2009. These quasars, with $i$ magnitudes from 16.44 to 19.34 and redshifts from 0.898 to 2.773, were not identified in the SDSS spectroscopic survey, though six of them with redshifts less than 2.5 were selected as quasar targets in SDSS. Except one source without near-IR $Y$-band data, seven of these eight new quasars meet a newly proposed quasar selection criterion involving both near-IR and optical colors. Two of them were found in the 'redshift desert' for quasars ($z$ from 2.2 to 3), indicating that the new criterion is efficient for recovering the missing quasars with similar optical colors as stars. Although LAMOST met some problems during the commissioning observations, we were still able to identify other 38 known SDSS quasars in this field, with $i$ magnitudes from 16.24 to 19.10 and redshifts from 0.297 to 4.512. Our identifications imply that a substantial fraction of quasars may be missing in the previous quasar surveys. The implication of our results to the future LAMOST quasar survey is discussed.
FINDING MISSING QUASARS IN THE 'REDSHIFT DESERT'

Abstract:Quasars at high redshift can help us to probe the nature of the early universe. Current quasar sample is incomplete in the redshift range from 2.2 to 3 because of the similar quasar colors as stars in the optical band. The main objective of the Chinese LAMOST spectroscopic quasar survey is to discover these missing quasars and provide a quasar sample consisting of 0.3million new quasars brighter than the magnitude limit i = 20.5 in the next 5 years. This will hopefully provide the largest quasar sample for the further studies of AGN physics and cosmology. The improved quasar selection criteria based on the UKIDSS near-IR and SDSS optical colors are introduced, and their advantages in uncovering the missing quasars in the quasar 'redshift desert' (z=2.2 to 3) are demonstrated. We also present some recent discoveries of new quasars from the LAMOST commissioning and other spectroscopic observations. The implications of our study to the ongoing and upcoming large optical and near-IR sky surveys are discussed.

Abstract:An X-ray source close to the classical Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 is identified as a quasar with a redshift of 0.63. The very high surface density of quasars around NGC 1068 suggests that the quasars may be physically associated with this active galaxy.

Abstract:In 2015, an international team consisting of mainly Chinese astronomers an-nounced the discovery of the most luminous quasar in the early Universe, powered by the most massive black hole known at the time. The discovery of this quasar, named SDSS J0100+2802, set a new record in the discovery of high redshift quasars with 2-meter telescopes, and sheds light just like a lighthouse to help us know more about the early Universe. Moreover, it presents sub-stantial challenges to theories of the formation and growth of black holes in the early Universe. This article will discuss the following topics:(1) the historical discovery of quasars;(2) the nature of quasars and parameters to describe them;(3) the scientific motivation to study quasars;(4) the ways to select quasars, especially high redshift quasars;(5) how we discovered the quasar SDSS J0100+2802;(6) a perspective of future research on high redshift quasars.

Abstract:Despite extensive efforts, to date only two quasars have been found at z > 7, due to a combination of low spatial density and high contamination from more ubiquitous Galactic cool dwarfs in quasar selection. This limits our current knowledge of the super-massive black hole growth mechanism and reionization history. In this Letter, we report the discovery of a luminous quasar at z = 7.021, DELS J003836.10-152723.6 (hereafter J0038-1527), selected using photometric data from Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Legacy Imaging Survey, Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) imaging Survey, as well as Wide-field Infrared Survey Explore mid-infrared all-sky survey. With an absolute magnitude of M-1450 = -27.1 and bolometric luminosity of L-Bol = 5.6 x 10(13) L-circle dot, J0038-1527 is the most luminous quasar known at z > 7. Deep optical to near-infrared spectroscopic observations suggest that J0038-1527 hosts a 1.3 billion solar mass black hole accreting at the Eddington limit, with an Eddington ratio of 1.25 +/- 0.19. The C IV broad emission line of J0038-1527 is blueshifted by more than 3000 km s(-1) relative to the quasar systemic redshift. More detailed investigations of the high-quality spectra reveal three extremely high-velocity C IV broad absorption lines with velocity from 0.08 to 0.14 times the speed of light and total "balnicity" index of more than 5000 km s(-1), suggesting the presence of relativistic outflows. J0038-1527 is the first quasar found at the epoch of reionization with such strong outflows, and therefore provides a unique laboratory to investigate active galactic nuclei feedback on the formation and growth of the most massive galaxies in the early universe.

Abstract:We report the discovery of a bright blue quasar: SDSS J022218.03-062511.1. This object was discovered spectroscopically while searching for hot white dwarfs that may be used as calibration sources for large sky surveys such as the Dark Energy Survey or the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope project. We present the calibrated spectrum, spectral line shifts and report a redshift of z = 0.521 +/- 0.0015 and a rest-frame g-band luminosity of 8.71 X 10^11 L(Sun).

Abstract:Strong gravitational lensing provides a powerful probe of the physical properties of quasars and their host galaxies. A high fraction of the most luminous high-redshift quasars was predicted to be lensed due to magnification bias. However, no multiple imaged quasar was found at z > 5 in previous surveys. We report the discovery of J043947.08+163415.7, a strongly lensed quasar at z = 6.51, the first such object detected at the epoch of reionization, and the brightest quasar yet known at z > 5. High-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging reveals a multiple imaged system with a maximum image separation θ ∼ 0.″2, best explained by a model of three quasar images lensed by a low-luminosity galaxy at z ∼ 0.7, with a magnification factor of ∼50. The existence of this source suggests that a significant population of strongly lensed, high-redshift quasars could have been missed by previous surveys, as standard color selection techniques would fail when the quasar color is contaminated by the lensing galaxy.
Discovery of Newly Formed Broad Absorption Lines in a Radio-Loud Quasar

Abstract:We report a serendipitous discovery of broad absorption lines that were newly formed in the spectrum of the high-redshift, luminous radio-loud quasar TEX 1726 + 344, in a time interval of only 12 years. This is the first quasar showing a transition from narrow absorption lines to broad absorption lines. It also becomes one of the few radio-loud broad absorption line quasars. The gas cloud responsible for these broad absorption lines is derived to have parameters coinciding with those of the remnant of a tidally disrupted star.
