Abstract:Recent research shows that antenna correlation plays a crucial role in antenna diversity and capacity of MIMO system. In order to obtain lower correlation coefficient many methods have been developed, e. g.. using antennas of orthogonal polarization for transmitter or receiver. But few paper considers the arrays with arbitrarily oriented antennas. In this kind of antenna arrays, each antenna element has a different polarization and radiation pattern. In this paper, we express a closed form correlation function of two arbitrarily oriented antennas. This kind of antenna array will cause lower correlation coefficient then correlation coefficient of z-axis oriented antenna array. Our work gives a correlation formula that has the potential to be used in guiding the antenna array design for enhancing the diversity gain and capacity of MIMO system.

Abstract:The question of how many receiver antennas to employ in a diversity system operating in cochannel interference is examined. The long term signal-power-to-interference-power ratio, the long term signal amplitude to the square root of the interference power ratio, the average instantaneous signal-to- interference ratio, and the average bit error rate of a maximal ratio combining diversity system in the presence of an arbitrary number of cochannel interferers are evaluated when the desired user signal and the interfering user signals experience correlated Ricean fading. The best number of antennas required for a fixed-size antenna array to achieve a good compromise between the system performance and system cost is investigated. The results show that, in general, the performance of a fixed-size antenna array containing the maximum number of independent antennas can not be significantly improved by adding more than one additional antenna. Some special cases where particular gains can be achieved by adding additional correlated antennas are also discusssed.

Abstract:The outage probability of maximal ratio combining diversity with an arbitrary number of antennas in the presence of an arbitrary number of cochannel interferers and thermal noise is derived when the branch gains of the desired user signal and interfering signals experience Rayleigh fading and have the same correlation matrix. Abstract:The effect of noise on the maximum useful number of receiver antennas that can be deployed in a cochannel interference diversity system is examined. The long term signal- power-to-interference-plus-noise-power ratio (SINRP), the long term signal amplitude to the square root of interference plus noise power ratio (SAINPR), the average instantaneous signal-to- interference-plus-noise ratio (AISINR), and the average bit error rate (BER) of a maximal ratio combining (MRC) diversity system in the presence of multiple cochannel interferers and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) are evaluated when the desired user signal and the interfering user signals are independent, and each of them experiences correlated Ricean fading at the receiver antennas. The results show that a previous design rule which states that the performance of a fixed-size antenna array containing the maximum number of independent antennas cannot be significantly improved by adding more than one additional antenna, still applies when the interference dominates the noise. It is shown that the SINRP and SAINPR measures exhibit asymptotic limits as the number of correlated antennas increases. Simple expressions for these limits are derived and it is shown that these asymptotic limits are unchanged when noise is neglected.

A Novel Numerical Model for Simulating Three Dimensional MIMO Channels With Complex Antenna Arrays

Abstract:We develop a novel three-dimensional (3D) numerical model for rigorously simulating mutual coupling effects on the channel capacity of the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. In this model, the efficient integral equation method mutlilevel Green's function interpolation method (MLGFIM) is for the first time employed to calculate the input admittances and radiation patterns of the transmit and receive antennas of MIMOs. Comparing with the method of moments whose complexity is O(N2) , MLGFIM has an efficiency of O(NlogN) and is suitable for efficiently solving antenna arrays problems. To accurately model the EM wave propagation, we (1) use the ray tracing method to obtain the multi-paths and (2) rigorously obtain the dyadic path loss factor model from which a novel stochastic path loss model that is flexible for both the environments with PEC walls and that with infinite thick lossless dielectric walls is devised. Using the proposed model, we successfully analyze mutual coupling effects on the 3D correlation of a 2-by-2 monopole array and the indoor channel capacity of a 20-by-20 planar array and a 20-by-20 icosahedron array. The numerical examples in this paper demonstrate the efficiency of our model for simulating the MIMO system with complex radiators.

Abstract:Correlation coefficient of received signals across a pair of antennas is a key performance indicator for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. For multipath environments with uniform 3-D angular power spectrum, the signal correlation between two antennas can be exactly calculated from their 3-D radiation patterns. When radiation patterns are unavailable, a simplified approach that only requires the antennas' scattering parameters can be used instead. However, the simpler method assumes lossless antennas and thus only works well for antennas with high radiation efficiencies. To take into account the antenna loss, the idea of equivalent circuit approximation is used in this paper to analytically separate the lossy components (resistance or conductance) from the lossy antenna arrays, using known scattering parameters and radiation efficiencies. The simplified method using S parameters can then be applied to obtain the correlation coefficient of the equivalent lossless antennas. The effectiveness of the method has been verified on antennas operating at a single mode, such as dipole or patch at its lowest resonant frequency. Good results were also obtained for the measured case of a dual-antenna mobile terminal, consisting of a monopole and a PIFA.

Abstract:Both the interchannel coupling (CC) among multiple compact circuitry channels and the antenna polarization coupling (APC) due to angular deviation of antennas (ADA) in diversity systems cannot be neglected in practice. The effects of these two problems are considered in this paper. The investigation of the CC in a two-branch orthogonal polarization antenna diversity system is extended to the case of a general multibranch polarization antenna diversity system, and the CC is investigated together with APC by applying a network theory framework. Their effects on both the correlation and the mean power ratio among received signals are,)obtained. It is found that the effects of both kinds of couplings as :well as that of the combining signal processing on the received signals can be considered as a series of weightings. Two equivalent relations among APC, CC, and ADA are developed. Such equivalences reveal insights into CC from the point of view of antennas and provide additional degree-of-freedom for system optimization to improve the diversity performance. Furthermore, two kinds of compensation techniques are also developed to mitigate the APC and CC, as well as to enhance the diversity performance. Finally, Some numerical results are presented to validate the analyses.

Abstract:This paper derived the analytical expressions for both the mean received power of each antenna and the spatial correlation between antennas with mutual coupling. The effects of the coupling on mean power, spatial correlation and capacity of MIMO wireless channels were investigated. The conditions for the power balance and both the effect-free and decorrelation of the coupling are achieved, which shows the decorrelation is a tradeoff between mean DOAs and the pattern diversity due to mutual coupling.

Abstract:An equivalent relation of channel coupling (CC) is proposed, based on the analysis of CC in two-branch orthogonal polarization antenna diversity systems by applying a network theory framework. This equivalence explains CC from the point of view of antennas, which states that CC is equivalent to each antenna deviating a complex angle from its original position. In particular, if the CC and transmission coefficients are real, the equivalent deviation angles are also real, and the correlation is independent of the deviation angles from the vertical plane; furthermore, if the two deviation angles from the vertical plane are equal, both the correlation and the mean power ratio are independent of the two angles. This equivalent relation bridges CC and antenna angular deviations, and results in more easy understanding of CC.
Reduction of the Envelope Correlation Coefficient With Improved Total Efficiency for Mobile LTE MIMO Antenna Arrays: Mutual Scattering Mode

Abstract:A mutual scattering mode is introduced in this paper. Utilizing this mode, the correlation of a lossy long-term evolution (LTE) multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna array can be reduced efficiently, even down to zero, by increasing the Q factors of the MIMO antenna elements. In practice, the Q factors can be straight forwardly tuned through different input impedance matching. The zero correlation occurs at a Q factor higher than that resulting from the conjugate input impedance matching. On one hand, if the inter-element distance is larger than a certain distance (what we denominate as the Critical Distance), the total efficiency can also be improved in addition to reducing the correlation. On the other hand, when the inter-element distance is less than the critical distance, a reference MIMO antenna with high correlation and high total efficiency is obtained. This antenna can well be proposed for over-the-air (OTA) measurement applications. The introduced scattering mode is investigated for dual monopoles on a large lossy ground plane and for various mobile terminal MIMO antenna designs. A wideband MIMO antenna, with multiple resonances, covering the band 746–870 MHz is proposed with the envelope correlation coefficient and total efficiency less than 0.5 and higher than 50% ( 3 dB), respectively. Measurements and simulations agree well for all the fabricated prototypes. The envelope correlations and the multiplexing efficiencies of the prototypes are also investigated in propagation channels with Gaussian distributed angle of arrivals.

Abstract:Previous work on maximum ratio combining (MRC) diversity has derived a closed-form cumulative distribution function (CDF), referred to as Lee's formula, for spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels. It is usually believed that (due to its singularity) Lee's formula will result in large numerical error when two eigenvalues of a diversity antenna's covariance matrix are close to each other. This letter shows that the limit of Lee's formula converges to the true CDF as eigenvalues converge to each other, which implies that Lee's formula is robust in determining diversity gains of arbitrary antennas based on stochastic measurements.
Revisiting the Complex Correlation in A Mimo System

Abstract:It is commonly believed that a complex correlation of up to 0.5 in magnitude is negligible for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) performances and that the correlation affects the diversity gain or throughput only via its magnitude. In this work, we show that when the number of antenna ports is larger than two, the phase of the correlation coefficient affects the diversity gain and that even small correlation can severely degrade the throughput performance of MIMO systems with full spatial multiplexing and no diversity gain. We assume maximum ratio combining (MRC) to investigate the correlation effect on diversity gain and zero-forcing (ZF) equalizer to study the correlation effect on the MIMO throughput.

Abstract:In "On the Bounds of Feedback Rates for Pilot-Assisted MIMO Systems," by Zhang et al., the authors calculated the bounds of feedback rates for pilot-assisted multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, the nontrivial error of an equation in the Appendix has been found in the derivations, which led to inexact numerical results on the capacity with respect to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We correct the error by recalculating the bounds of feedback rates.
