Abstract:NAN Gong-yue's academic experience and the framework of his calendrical knowledge is investigated in this paper as a cross section to observe and recover the activities,relationships,and the foreign aspects in the astronomical knowledge of the members in the official or imperial astronomical organization from the first year of Shenlong Reign(705) to the early Kaiyuan Reign(713-741).Thereby a sound and reliable background is provided for understanding the calendrical debate between Dayanli and Jiuzhili.The author believes that Indian astronomy had an important influence on the Chinese official astronomy in the Mid-Tang Dynasty,and the Jiuzhili held actually a powerful position in the imperial astronomical organization then.And the real reason why QutanZhuan made an accusation against Dayanli is that the JiuZhili was incompletely copied by the Dayanli.Qutan-Zhuan's purpose of making the accusation was to protect the high status of Indian astronomy in the official astronomical organization of Tang Dynasty,and also to help the Indian astronomical elements filter into the Chinese native astronomy more successfully and completely.However the judgment made by the Tang government in some way blocked the advanced elements in the Indian astronomy to be assimilated by Chinese astronomy thenceforth.

Abstract:Did the Indian and Babylonian astronomy evolve in isolation, was there mutual influence, or was one dependent on the other? Scholars have debated these questions for more than two centuries, and opinion has swung one way or the other with time. The similarities between the two systems that have been investigated are: the use of 30 divisions of the lunar month; the 360 divisions of the civil year; the length of the year; and the solar zodiac. Some have wondered if the Babylonian planetary tables might have played a role in the theories of the siddhantas. I shall in this essay go over the essentials of the early Indian and Babylonian astronomy and summarize the latest views on the relationship between them. I shall show that the key ideas found in the Babylonian astronomy of 700 BC are already present in the Vedic texts, which even by the most conservative reckoning are centuries older than this period. I shall also show that the solar zodiac (rashis) was used in Vedic India and I shall present a plausible derivation of the symbols of the solar zodiac from the deities of the lunar segments. This does not mean that the Babylonian astronomy and astrology is derived from the Indian tradition. If at all there was borrowing, that was restricted to the most general ideas only. The nature of Indian and Babylonian astronomical methods is quite different. I propose that it is most likely that Babylonian astronomy emerged independently.

Abstract:In ancient China,astronomy was mainly monopolized by the royals until the late Ming Dynasty.In Qing Dynasty,with Western astronomy receiving official recognition,the situation underwent a radical change,whose influence on Qing politics,philosophy,science and culture is worth in-depth discussion.Qing Dynasty's adopting European astronomy for traditional calendar and royal astronomy,the most important political symbol,triggered furious debate.Astronomy became a fashion of that upper class,while nongovernmental astronomy was also encouraged.China was once very close to the frontier of European astronomy.Unfortunately,due to domestic reasons,Chinese astronomy failed to catch up with the Western world.

Abstract:With regard to the understanding of the co mparative size of the heavens and the earth, they were thought to be similar to each other by the ancient Chinese. That's the tradition of recognizing the prob lem in ancient China. But Wang Chong in the Eastern Han Dynasty raised a view th at the size of the place lived by human beings was rather smaller than that of t he heavens by analysing the fact that the direction of the polestar was always i n the north while the size of the rising sun was always same whenever they were looked from the east or the west. His demonstration was similar to that of Ptole my in ancient Greece. Such an opinion of Wang Chong was based on his thinking mo del of paying attention to the quantum of matters concerned. His opinion was neg lected in ancient China and hadn't played any role in the develoment of ancient Chinese astronomy.

Abstract:This paper analyses the astronomical knowledge in ancient Chinese mythology. The author points out that the mythology of "Pan Gu Separating Heaven from Earth" shows the ancients’ view of the creation and evolution of the universe, which is totally different from the Creation mythology in Christianity. The Chinese myth of "Nv Wa Baking Stone to Repair Heaven" reflects that ancient Chinese astronomers firmly believed that heaven is a solid. The myth of "Using the Huge Turtle’s Leg as Pillars to Sustain the Body of Heaven" rectified the ancient Chinese astronomical theory of heaven being a shell. The legend of "Gong Gong Bumping Against Bu Zhou Mountain" gave people a visual explanation of the mechanism of movement of the sun, moon and stars. The fairy story of "Chang E Flying to the Moon" in Zhang Heng’s Ling Xian describes the characteristics of lunar eclipse. On the other hand, the story Lei Cao in Pu Songling’s Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio constructed a wonderful story about stars and the vault of heaven. The authors of early mythologies used myth as tools to explain nature. But the authors of later mythologies used scientific knowledge as the basis to construct stories. The exploration of astronomical knowledge in ancient Chinese mythologies helps us not only to know the astronomy then, but also to better understand the mythologies themselves.

Abstract:La réception du système tychonique en Chine à la fin de la dynastie Ming et au début de la dynastie Qing est une question importante à la fois dans l’histoire de l’astronomie chinoise et dans celle des échanges scientifiques entre l’Est et l’Ouest. Dans cet article, une nouvelle exploration complète de ce processus historique est présentée. Les Traités d’astronomie calendaire de l’ère Chongzhen ( Chongzhen lishu ), qui présentent les méthodes de Tycho Brahe, ont été révisés à plusieurs reprises lors de la réforme astronomique de la fin de la dynastie Ming. L’examen attentif de ces traités révèle qu’ils contiennent différents types d’erreurs et d’incohérences. Les astronomes du début des Qing se sont efforcés de résoudre ces problèmes et d’améliorer la théorie tychonique quand ils ont étudié les Traités d’astronomie calendaire de l’ère Chongzhen , et certains d’entre eux ont réussi à proposer des procédures améliorées. Plus tard, dans le but de mettre fin à la dépendance à l’égard des Jésuites en matière scientifique, l’empereur Kangxi a ordonné la compilation d’un nouveau traité d’astronomie. De nombreux résultats obtenus par les savants chinois ont finalement été incorporés dans ce nouveau traité, l’ Examen complet des phénomènes astronomique composé par l’empereur ( Yuzhi lixiang kaocheng ).

Abstract:The myths and philosophy of ancient China hold that chaos creates yin and yang,and everything originates from yin and yang.Laos and Confucius formed their cosmic views under the influence of ancient Chinese calendar.Ancient popular heavenly cover theory and sphere-heaven theory were affected by ancient six-dragon calendar,which some scholars believe is the cosmic background of the Iching Book of Changes.Arguments between laevo-rotatory theory and dextrorotation theory,based on geocentric theory,are involved in the debates between Calendar scientist's materialism empiricism and Confusian's idealism apriorism.

Abstract:In the planning of some Chinese towns we can see an evident orientation with the cardinal north-south direction. However, other features reveal a possible orientation with the sunrise/sunset azimuth on solstices too, as in the case of Shangdu (Xanadu), the summer capital of Kublai Khan. Here we discuss some other examples of a possible solar orientation in the planning of ancient towns. We will analyze the plans of Xi'an, Khanbalik and Dali.

Abstract:There was a dramatic turn from astronomy to astrology in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Period of the Warring States,which exerted much ideological,cultural and academic influence on ancient China.The classic books of Confucianism of the Han dynasty embody some elements of astrology,and some are full of astrological ideas,of which the core concept of Essays on The Book of Changes and the ideas of Dong Zhongshu,a great scholar on The Spring and Autumn Annals,are most influential.It can be concluded that astrology has exerted far-reaching influence on Chinese ideology,doctrines and politics since the Qin and the Han dynasties.

Abstract:The Astronomical thoughts of ancient India closely connected with ancient India religion and philosophy. Astronomy in veda times knew eternal universe cycle in the myth of Brahma constantly regenerating universe, and ancient Indian astronomers put forward the constellation system of 27 or 28 naksatras like 28 constellation in ancient Chinese astronomy. Jainism made some elaborate speculations on universe elements, while Buddhism constructed a geocentric universe model that put Meru as the world centre according to the eternal recurrence of life, and regarded boundless eternal universe as self - similar structure, which don＇ t conform to the modern scientific cosmic evolution model.

Abstract:Shijing,the classical poem collection in the Zhou Dynasty,clearly recorded a solar eclipse that took place on the day Xinmao.The chronological and geographic background for this eclipse are quite clear.However,the precise modern astronomical computation did not find its exact equivalent.In this paper,all the eclipses,that should take place on the day Xinmao for 8～6 centuries BC and in the 10th month for the reigns of King Li～King You,are obtained based on the calculations,and the related astronomical elements are discussed.It is wished that this work would be helpful for historians to study the text and background of the literature.

Abstract:Zuo Zhuan is a famous Chinese book appeared before Qin Dynasty which greatly influenced the ancient Chinese society.Through the study of the records of solar eclipse in Zuo Zhuan,the paper analyses its influence upon the society,rite system,and politics,etc.The paper discusses the status in the history of science of both Zuo Zhuan and its solar eclipse records.It raises a view that Zuo Zhuan is an important factor that makes solar eclipse divination to possess strong political meanings and is an initiator to explain the social meaning of solar eclipse in modeling method.

Abstract:The present situation in the study of solar activity in China and abroad is briefly discussed.It is pointed out that due to effects of solar activity on the earth and human life,particularly with the development of space exploration and technology,the need for solar activity study is more urgent and more attention is called to the research of solar activity by the governments all over the world.Under this condition,with the progressing of high technologies and satellite surveying,a new era of solar activity study will be seen in the twenty-first century.The paper also gives suggestions for future direction,emphasis and measures in solar activity research in China.

Abstract:By the late Qing dynasty, Western scientific learning had been disseminated among the Chinese literati. However, astronomical knowledge was still interpreted in the traditional Chinese astrological manner and served as an instrument in political affairs, especially in times of crisis. This paper examines controversies over astronomical observations between the proponents of traditional astrology and Western learning by presenting two cases of comet sightings. The first case is of a comet sighting between 1880 and 1882, and the second is of comets sighted before the Chinese Revolution of 1911. The reasons for the recurrence of ancient cometary prognostication in the early 20th century, when modern knowledge of comets was widespread in China, were explored as well.

Abstract:During the past two years（2016–2018）, great achievements have been made in the Chinese research of interplanetary physics, with nearly 100 papers published in the academic journals. The achievements are including but not limited to the following topics: solar corona; solar wind and turbulence; filament/prominence and jets; solar flare; radio bursts; particle acceleration at coronal shocks; magnetic flux ropes; instability;instrument; Coronal Mass Ejections（CMEs） and their interplanetary counterparts; Magnetohydrodynamic（MHD） numerical modeling; solar energetic particles and cosmic rays. The progress further improves our understanding of the eruptions of solar activities, their evolutions and propagations in the heliosphere, and final geoeffects on our Earth. These results were achieved by the Chinese solar and space scientists independently or via international collaborations. This paper will give a brief review of these achievements.
Verification of the Astronomical Almanac's Algorithm for Approximate the Position of the Sun

Abstract:With the consumption of the resources, it's important to develop clean solar energy that can solve the problem of energy shortage. Obtaining an accurate position of the sun is the premise of using the solar energy efficiently. An accurate solar position includes two factors that are elevation and azimuth. In the paper, Joseph J. Michalsky's algorithm for calculation of the solar position is verified that is taken from the American Astronomical Almanac. The algorithm has been written into program by Joseph J. Michalsky in FORTRAN. In the paper, it's has been adapted to visual C++ that can calculate the solar elevation and azimuth and errors or some places that less accurate are corrected. The Chinese Astronomical Almanac for the year 1985 doesn't tabulate elevation and azimuth. The quantities needed to calculate elevation and azimuth are the right ascension, the declination and the Greenwich mean sidereal time that are tabulated in the Almanac. Comparing those variables that calculated from the algorithm with the data from the Chinese Astronomical Almanac for the year 1985, it can be found that the biggest difference of the two ways is only 0.01 degrees, 0.01 degrees and 0.0001h respectively, which prove the accuracy of the algorithm indirectly. The measured data that only include elevation comes from Basic Data of Geography in China written by Institute of Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Comparing elevation given by the algorithm with the measured data, it shows that the algorithm can be accurate calculating the position of the sun in some extent. And the paper shows in detail the conversion from the local real solar time to Universal Time because the time in Basic Data of Geography in China is the local real solar time. Finally we notice that the 0.01 degrees accuracy mentioned by other paper is not the accuracy of the elevation and azimuth of the sun, but the accuracy of the right ascension and declination. It's easy to understand why the difference of the results calculated by the algorithm and measured data is greater than 0.01 degrees.

Abstract:This paper investigates the methods of eclipse prediction in China before the fourth century AD, with a detailed example of the eclipse theory in the Jing chu li (Luminous Inception System ). As the official calendar of the Jin dynasty and the Kingdom Wei during the three kingdoms period, the Jing chu li was used for more than 200 years after it was adopted in 237 AD. From the San tong li (Triple Concordance System ) of the Western Han to the Jing chu li , methods for predicting eclipses developed in three important ways: (i) from predicting only lunar eclipses to the prediction of both solar and lunar eclipses; (ii) from relying only on the mean periods of the sun and the moon to taking into consideration the variation in lunar velocity; and (iii) from estimating only a rough date to predicting the exact time of eclipses. This paper addresses two questions: first, how did ancient Chinese astronomers use cycles to predict eclipses in the Han dynasty? Second, how did astronomers such as Liu Hong and Yang Wei revise early eclipse prediction methods? The original text of the Jing chu li is analyzed to show how Yang Wei combined lunar velocity theory with the traditional method of predicting eclipses using cycles.

Abstract:During the late Ming and early Qing period, Jesuit missionaries introduced European science into China, and thereby profoundly influenced the later development of Chinese astronomy. Not only did European astronomy become the official system of the Qing dynasty, but the traditional way to 'attain up above' by connecting the study of astronomy and Yi learning gradually fell into disuse. However, the astronomers in this period expressed different views on these two processes. As one of the most important early Qing astronomers, Xue Fengzuo's case presents a distinctive and important example. Firstly, under the influences of both Chinese tradition and European science, Xue Fengzuo rebuilt the way to 'attain up above' based on his three-fold 'calendrical learning', i.e. calendrical astronomy, astrology and related pragmatic applications, through which he could realize the highest Confucian ideal. Secondly, he integrated Chinese and Western knowledge for all three aspects of his 'calendrical learning', instead of ceding the dominant position to Western methods. From Xue Fengzuo's example, many of the complex effects of the encounter between different cultures and the process of knowledge transfer can be revealed.
