Abstract:The diagram of indices of coronal and chromospheric activity allowed us to reveal stars where solar-type activity appears and regular cycles are forming. Using new consideration of a relation between coronal activity and the rotation rate, together with new data on the ages of open clusters, we estimate the age of the young Sun corresponding to the epoch of formation of its cycle. The properties of the activity of this young Sun, with an age slightly older than one billion years, are briefly discussed. An analysis of available data on the long-term regular variability of late-type stars leads to the conclusion that duration of a cycle associated with solar-type activity increases with the deceleration of the stellar rotation; i.e., with age. New data on the magnetic fields of comparatively young G stars and changes in the role of the large-scale and the local magnetic fields in the formation of the activity of the young Sun are discussed. Studies in this area aim to provide observational tests aimed at identifying the conditions for the formation of cyclic activity on stars in the lower part of the main sequence, and test some results of dynamo theory.

Abstract:We present a brief review of observational results contributing to modern ideas on the evolution of stellar activity. Basic laws, derived for both rotation-age and activity-rotation relationships, allow us to trace how the activity of low-mass stars changes with age during their stay on the main sequence. We focus on the evaluation of the activity properties of stars that could be analogs of the young Sun. Our study includes joint consideration of different tracers of activity, rotation and magnetic fields of Sun-like stars of various ages. We identify rotation periods, when the saturated regime of activity changes to the unsaturated mode, when the solar-type activity is formed: for G- and K-type stars, they are 1.1 and 3.3 days, respectively. This corresponds to an age interval of about 0.2-0.6 Gyr, when regular sunspot cycle began to be established on the early Sun. We discuss properties of the coronal and chromospheric activity in young Suns. Our evaluation of the EUV-fluxes in the spectral range of 1350-1750 A shows that the far-UV radiation of the early Sun was a factor of 7 times more intense than that of the present-day Sun, and twice higher when the regular sunspot cycle was established. For the young Sun, we can estimate the possible mass loss rate associated with quasi-steady outflow as $10^{-12} M_\odot$/yr. The results of observations of the largest flares on solar-type stars are also discussed, leading to conclusion that the most powerful phenomena occur on the fast-rotating stars in the saturated activity regime. Our estimate of the stellar magnetic fields makes it possible to evaluate the maximal possible flare energy. This could help us better understand the origin of extreme events on the Sun in the past.

Abstract:We summarize the fifty-year concerted effort to place the "activity" of the Sun in the context of the stars. As a working definition of solar activity in the context of stars, we adopt those globally-observable variations on time scales below thermal time scales, of ~ 100,000 yr for the convection zone. So defined, activity is dominated by magnetic-field evolution, including the 22-year Hale cycle, the typical time it takes for the quasi-periodic reversal in which the global magnetic-field takes place. This is accompanied by sunspot variations with 11 year periods, known since the time of Schwabe, as well as faster variations due to rotation of active regions and flaring. "Diagnostics and indices" are terms given to the indirect signatures of varying magnetic- fields, including the photometric (broad-band) variations associated with the sunspot cycle, and variations of the accompanying heated plasma in higher layers of stellar atmospheres seen at special optical wavelengths, and UV and X-ray wavelengths. Our attention is also focussed on the theme of the Symposium by examining evidence for deep and extended minima of stars, and placing the 70-year long solar Maunder Minimum into a stellar context.

Abstract:We discuss problems which are of main importance for understanding the nature of climate changes in the 20th century and basic physical processes responsible for these changes. A possible role of solar activity in the Earth’s climate changes in the past and future is considered. As shown, physical mechanisms which can provide for the solar variability effect on the weather and climate are reduced to the control of the energy flux from the Earth to space. A special emphasis is given on the solar activity effect on climatic characteristics of the troposphere through the atmospheric electricity. We consider peculiarities of the response of thermal and dynamic regimes of the World Ocean and atmosphere to solar activity changes and processes in the atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere. We also show and discuss results of the analysis of regularities and peculiarities of troposphere and the ocean surface temperature response to both isolated heliogeophysical disturbances and long-term changes in solar and geomagnetic activity.

Abstract:The paper presents the results of the analysis of the geometric characteristics of sunspots for the period of 19-24 cycles of activity. The shape of sunspots was studied on the basis of the method of normalization of images of sunspots to study the average profile of the spot. The deviation of the shape of sunspots from the axisymmetric configuration is investigated. It was found that the spots, as a rule, have an ellipsoid shape, and the major axis of the ellipse has a predominant inclination to the equator, opposite in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The angle of inclination of the sunspot axis corresponds to the angle of inclination of the bipoles in the activity cycles. The relationship between the shape of sunspots in the current cycle and the amplitude of the next cycle of activity is found. The greater the elongation along the longitude of the current cycle of spots, the higher the next cycle of activity will be.

Specifically, we report on the following topics: historical sunspot numbers and revisions; active region (AR) flux ranges and lifetimes; bipolar magnetic region tilt angles; Hale and Joy's law; the impact of rogue ARs on cycle progression and the amplitude of the following cycle; the spatio-temporal emergence of ARs that creates the butterfly diagram; polar fields; large-scale flows including zonal, meridional, and AR in-flows; short-term cycle variability; and helioseismic results including mode parameter changes.

Abstract:(abridged) The Sun's magnetic activity has steadily declined during its main-sequence life. While the solar photospheric luminosity was about 30% lower 4.6 Gyr ago when the Sun arrived on the main sequence compared to present-day levels, its faster rotation generated enhanced magnetic activity; magnetic heating processes in the chromosphere, the transition region, and the corona induced ultraviolet, extreme-ultraviolet, and X-ray emission about 10, 100, and 1000 times, respectively, the present-day levels, as inferred from young solar-analog stars. Also, the production rate of accelerated, high-energy particles was orders of magnitude higher than in present-day solar flares, and a much stronger wind escaped from the Sun, permeating the entire solar system. The consequences of the enhanced radiation and particle fluxes from the young Sun were potentially severe for the evolution of solar-system planets and moons. Interactions of high-energy radiation and the solar wind with upper planetary atmospheres may have led to the escape of important amounts of atmospheric constituents. The present dry atmosphere of Venus and the thin atmosphere of Mars may be a product of early irradiation and heating by solar high-energy radiation. High levels of magnetic activity are also inferred for the pre-main sequence Sun. At those stages, interactions of high-energy radiation and particles with the circumsolar disk in which planets eventually formed were important. Traces left in meteorites by energetic particles and anomalous isotopic abundance ratios in meteoritic inclusions may provide evidence for a highly active pre-main sequence Sun. The present article reviews these various issues related to the magnetic activity of the young Sun and the consequent interactions with its environment.

Abstract:Solar activity has a cyclic nature with the ≈11-year Schwabe cycle dominating its variability on the interannual timescale. However, solar cycles are significantly modulated in length, shape and magnitude, from near-spotless grand minima to very active grand maxima. The ≈400-year-long direct sunspot-number series is inhomogeneous in quality and too short to study robust parameters of long-term solar variability. The cosmogenic-isotope proxy extends the timescale to twelve millennia and provides crucial observational constraints of the long-term solar dynamo modulation. Here, we present a brief up-to-date overview of the long-term variability of solar activity at centennial – millennial timescales. The occurrence of grand minima and maxima is discussed as well as the existing quasi-periodicities such as centennial Gleissberg, 210-year Suess/de Vries and 2400-year Hallstatt cycles. It is shown that the solar cycles contain an important random component and have no clock-like phase locking implying a lack of long-term memory. A brief yet comprehensive review of the theoretical perspectives to explain the observed features in the framework of the dynamo models is presented, including the nonlinearity and stochastic fluctuations in the dynamo. We keep gaining knowledge of the processes driving solar variability with the new data acquainted and new models developed.

Abstract:The level of solar magnetic activity, as exemplified by the number of sunspots and by energetic events in the corona, varies on a wide range of time scales. Most prominent is the 11-year solar cycle, which is significantly modulated on longer time scales. Drawing from dynamo theory together with empirical results of past solar activity and of similar phenomena on solar-like stars, we show that the variability of the solar cycle can be essentially understood in terms of a weakly nonlinear limit cycle affected by random noise. In contrast to ad-hoc `toy models' for the solar cycle, this leads to a generic normal-form model, whose parameters are all constrained by observations. The model reproduces the characteristics of the variable solar activity on time scales between decades and millennia, including the occurrence and statistics of extended periods of very low activity (grand minima). Comparison with results obtained with a Babcock-Leighton-type dynamo model confirms the validity of the normal-mode approach.

Abstract:Abstract The solar cycle is a complex phenomenon, a comprehensive understanding of which requires the study of various tracers. Here, we consider the solar cycle as manifested in the harmonics of the solar large-scale surface magnetic field, including zonal, sectorial and tesseral harmonics, divided into odd and even relative to the solar equator. In addition to considering the amplitudes of the harmonics, we analyze their contribution to the magnetic energy. It turns out that the relative contribution of different types of harmonics to the magnetic energy is virtually independent of the cycle height. We identify different phases of the activity cycle using harmonics of different symmetries. A possible way to incorporate the obtained result into the solar dynamo theory is proposed.

Abstract:Context. Solar activity cycles vary in amplitude and duration. The variations can be at least partly explained by fluctuations in dynamo parameters. Aims. We want to restrict uncertainty in fluctuating dynamo parameters and find out which properties of the fluctuations control the amplitudes of the magnetic field and energy in variable dynamo cycles. Methods. A flux-transport model for the solar dynamo with fluctuations of the Babcock-Leighton type $\alpha$-effect was applied to generate statistics of magnetic cycles for our purposes. The statistics were compared with data on solar cycle periods to restrict the correlation time of dynamo fluctuations. Results. A characteristic time of fluctuations in the $\alpha$-effect is estimated to be close to the solar rotation period. The fluctuations produce asymmetry between the times of rise and descent of dynamo cycles, the rise time being on average shorter. The affect of the fluctuations on cycle amplitudes depends on the phase of the cycle in which the fluctuations occur. Negative fluctuations (decrease in $\alpha$) in the rise phase delay decay of poloidal field and increase the cycle amplitude in toroidal field and magnetic energy. Negative fluctuation in the decline phase reduces the polar field at the end of a cycle and the amplitude of the next cycle. The low amplitude of the 24th solar cycle compared to the preceding 23rd cycle can be explained by this effect. Positive fluctuations in the descent phase enhance the magnetic energy of the next cycle by increasing the seed poloidal field for the next cycle. The statistics of the computed energies of the cycles suggest that superflares of $\ge 10^{34}$ erg are not possible on the Sun.

Abstract:The dynamic activity of stars such as the Sun influences (exo)planetary space environments through modulation of stellar radiation, plasma wind, particle and magnetic fluxes. Energetic stellar phenomena such as flares and coronal mass ejections act as transient perturbations giving rise to hazardous space weather. Magnetic fields -- the primary driver of stellar activity -- are created via a magnetohydrodynamic dynamo mechanism within stellar convection zones. The dynamo mechanism in our host star -- the Sun -- is manifest in the cyclic appearance of magnetized sunspots on the solar surface. While sunspots have been directly observed for over four centuries, and theories of the origin of solar-stellar magnetism have been explored for over half a century, the inability to converge on the exact mechanism(s) governing cycle to cycle fluctuations and inconsistent predictions for the strength of future sunspot cycles have been challenges for models of solar cycle forecasts. This review discusses observational constraints on the solar magnetic cycle with a focus on those relevant for cycle forecasting, elucidates recent physical insights which aid in understanding solar cycle variability, and presents advances in solar cycle predictions achieved via data-driven, physics-based models. The most successful prediction approaches support the Babcock-Leighton solar dynamo mechanism as the primary driver of solar cycle variability and reinforces the flux transport paradigm as a useful tool for modelling solar-stellar magnetism.

Abstract:The Sun's magnetic fields,differential rotation and plasma convection give rise to complexity in the magnetic structure and activity over a large range in both spatial and temporal scales.The most notable among these is the solar activity cycle of 11 years,or magnetic cycle of 22 years.On small time scales of a few seconds to several hours,spectacular explosive events occur in the solar atmosphere,such as solar flares,prominence eruptions and coronal mass ejections. These forms of activity are all closely related to solar magnetic fields(SMF).This paper focuses on the introduction of SMFs' origin,the related observational technique,SMFs' distribution and evolution,and several associated typical characteristics,such as the complexities,active longitudes and active holes,the periodicities,and so on.The detailed content is organized as follows.In section 1,four typical forms of solar magnetic activity(sunspot,flare,filament,and coronal mass ejection)and their corresponding theoretical models are described briefly.Section 2 is devoted to solar dynamos responsible for explaining where SMF comes from and the course of instrument development built for observing it at higher and higher temporal and spatial resolutions.Section 3 summarizes the laws of SMFs' distribution and evolution on different spatial scales,including magnetic fields associated to active regions,quiet sun,and network,intra-network magnetic fields,obtained by using magnetograms and solar activity catalogues.Finally,some associated unresolved problems and highlights are discussed in the last section.

Abstract:It is shown that a description of the solar cycle using the odd zonal harmonic of the solar magnetic field expands our capabilities in two important areas of solar research: first, in improving and expanding the forecast to the near future of evolution of the cyclic solar activity and, second, in developing a program for monitoring the spectrophotometric characteristics of radiation of solar-like stars, aimed at obtaining new information about their magnetic fields.

Abstract:In the monograph, the authors systematize and generalize the results of studying solar-type activity that is characteristic of a significant part of mid- and low-mass stars of the Galaxy, outline the characteristics of such stars in the quiescent state, during the sporadic flares and variations of magnetic activity over the course of stellar evolution. The observational data taken over the whole range of the electromagnetic spectrum from decametric radio waves to X-rays are described in detail. The current models of stellar flares and stellar dynamo models are considered in two theoretical chapters. The last part of the book describes the impact of stellar activity of mid- and low-mass stars on exoplanetary environments. The Catalog of Stars with Solar-Type Activity is provided in the supplementary section. The book is intended for researchers involved in studying the physics of stars and the Sun, graduate students, and students specialized in heliophysics, astrophysics, and in the field of space physics. Abstract:The evolution of the solar activity comprises, apart from the well-known 11-year cycle, various temporal scales ranging from months up to the secondary cycles known as mid-term oscillations. Its nature deserves a physical explanation. In this work, we consider the 5-to-6 year oscillations as derived both from sunspot and from solar magnetic dipole time series. Using the solar dynamo model, we deduced that these variations may be a manifestation of the dynamo nonlinearities and non-harmonic shape of the solar activity cycles. We conclude that the observed mid-term oscillations are related to the nonlinear saturation of the dynamo processes in the solar interior.
