Abstract:In this talk, I summarize the activities in the $e^- e^-$ session. The consensus is that if the next generation $e^+ e^-$ linear collider wants to include an $e^- e^-$ option, the planning has to include it as early as possible. By doing so the extra cost would be only a small fraction of the total, and of course the physics potential would be very rewarding.

Abstract:I give a short summary on scenarios with new physics scalars that could be investigated at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. I concentrate on cases where at least one of the additional scalar has a mass below 125 GeV, and discuss models where this could be realized. Most of the material presented here has already been discussed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2307.15962" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.15962">arXiv:2307.15962</a>, and I therefore try to focus on novel developments since then.

Abstract:The past ten years of physics with e+e- colliding experiments at LEP and SLAC have shown the success of these experiments on not only impressively proving the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model (SM), but also to help provide stringent bounds on physics beyond the SM. With this experience in mind, there appear two equally fascinating opportunities for studying fermion-pair production processes at a future Linear Collider (LC). On the one hand, performing high precision measurements to the SM, for example, when running with high luminosity at the Z boson resonance, could be a quick and feasible enterprise in order to pin down the symmetry breaking mechanism of the electroweak sector through indirectly determining the masses of a light SM or MSSM Higgs boson or supersymmetric particles via virtual corrections. On the other hand, looking for such particles in direct production or other `New Physics' effects at energies between, for example, roughly 500 and 800 GeV will naturally be the main motivation to pursue the challenging endeavor of building and utilizing such a unique facility. These two scenarios for the LC shall be sketched here, with particular emphasis on the semi-analytical program ZFITTER for fermion-pair production in comparison with numerical programs like TOPAZ0, KK2f, and others.

Abstract:The next-generation high-energy facilities, the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the prospective $e^+e^-$ International Linear Collider (ILC), are expected to unravel new structures of matter and forces from the electroweak scale to the TeV scale. In this report we review the complementary role of LHC and ILC in drawing a comprehensive and high-precision picture of the mechanism breaking the electroweak symmetries and generating mass, and the unification of forces in the frame of supersymmetry.

Abstract:We consider the possibility of observing deviations from the Standard Model gauge-boson self-couplings at a future $500$~GeV $e^+ e^-$ linear collider. We concentrate on the case in which the electroweak symmetry breaking sector is strongly interacting and there are no new resonances within reach of the collider. We find a sensitivity to the anomalous couplings that is two orders of magnitude higher than that achievable at LEP II. We also show how a polarized electron beam extends the reach of the collider, allowing experiments to probe different directions in parameter space.

Abstract:Here I summarize P5-WG (New/Alternative Physics Working Group) of LCWS2000@FNAL, held on Oct 24-28, 2000. There were 13 talks altogether, 7 talks on collider signals from new particles/interactions and 6 talks on extra dimensional physics. We had very active and hot discussions among participants for those new/alternative physics/ideas.

From Optimal Observables to Machine Learning: an Effective-Field-Theory Analysis of $e^+e^- \to W^+W^-$ at Future Lepton Colliders

Abstract:We apply machine-learning techniques to the effective-field-theory analysis of the $e^+e^- \to W^+W^-$ processes at future lepton colliders, and demonstrate their advantages in comparison with conventional methods, such as optimal observables. Compared to traditional algorithms, we show that simulation-based inference methods are more robust to detector effects and backgrounds, and could in principle produce unbiased results with sufficient Monte Carlo simulation samples that accurately describe experiments. This is crucial for the analyses at future lepton colliders given the outstanding precision of the $e^+e^- \to W^+W^-$ measurement ($\sim 10^{-4}$ in terms of anomalous triple gauge couplings or even better) that can be reached. Our framework can be generalized to other effective-field-theory analyses, such as the one of $e^+e^- \to t\bar{t}$ or similar processes at muon colliders.

Abstract:Fermion compositness, and other new physics which can be described by an exchange of very massive particles ($Z^\prime$ boson, leptoquarks, sparticles with R-parity violating couplings), can be manifest itself as the presence of a strong four-fermion contact interaction. For the processes $e^+e^-\to \mu^+\mu^-$, $\tau^+\tau^-$, $\bar{b}b$ and $\bar{c}c$ at a future $e^+e^-$ linear collider (LC) with $\sqrt{s}=0.5$ TeV, we examine the sensitivity of the helicity cross sections to four-fermion contact interactions. If longitudinal polarization of the electron beam were available, two polarized integrated cross sections would offer the opportunity to separate the helicity cross sections and, in this way, to derive model-independent bounds on the relevant parameters. The measurement of these polarized cross sections with optimal kinematical cuts could significantly increase the sensitivity of helicity cross sections to contact interaction parameters and could give crucial information on the chiral structure of such new interactions. In addition, we consider the application of the proposed approach to the search for manifestations of a $Z^\prime$ for typical extended model examples.

Abstract:We study the incidence of genuine quartic vector boson couplings in the reactions e-e- -> e-e-ZZ, e-\nu ZW, \nu\nu WW. We find that a linear collider operated in the e-e- mode will provide bounds on these couplings which are competitive with those to be obtained in the e+e- mode.

The $e^+ e^- \rightarrow Z H$ Process in the SMEFT Beyond Leading Order

Abstract:We systematically study potential effects of Beyond the Standard Model physics in the $e^+ e^- \rightarrow Z H$ process. To this end, we include all relevant dimension-6 Standard Model Effective Field Theory operators and work to next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in the electroweak coupling. We consider both polarized and unpolarized electron and positron beams and present results for $\sqrt{s}=240, ~365$ and $500~{\rm GeV}$, emphasizing contributions where the NLO predictions differ significantly from the leading order results. At NLO, a sensitivity arises to operators that do not contribute at tree level, such as the Higgs trilinear coupling, CP-violating operators, and dimension-6 operators involving the top quark, among many others. We compare the prospects of future $e^+e^-$ colliders to explore these new physics effects with existing measurements from the LHC, electron EDMs (for CP violating operators), and Z pole measurements.

New Physics Off the $Z$-Pole: $e^+ e^- \rightarrow f \bar f$ at Future Lepton Colliders

Abstract:We explore the prospects for probing new physics (NP) beyond the Standard Model (SM) at future lepton colliders through precision measurements of $e^+e^-\to f{\bar f}$ observables off the $Z$ resonance. We consider interference between SM contributions and those arising from dimension-6, four-fermion effective operators that encode the effects of NP, yielding a linear dependence on the latter. This linear dependence in general increases with magnitude of the collision energy offset from the $Z$ pole. We consider a variety of asymmetries in order to enhance the NP-sensitivity while reducing experimental systematic and theoretical, SM uncertainties: an inclusive above and below $Z$-resonance total cross section asymmetry ($A_\sigma$) as well as the conventional forward-backward ($A_{\rm FB}$) and polarization ($A_{\rm pol}$) asymmetries. Based on projected statistical uncertainties at the Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC), we find that t measurement of $A_\sigma$ could extend the sensitivity to the NP mass scale by as much as a factor of $\sim 7$ compared to the present reach obtained with the CERN Large Electron Positron Collider. Inclusion of projected systematic theoretical SM uncertainties substantially reduce this sensitivity gain. For $A_{\rm FB}$, inclusion of experimental systematic uncertainties has a marginal impact on the gain in NP reach, whereas SM theoretical uncertainties remain a significant barrier to realizing the full NP sensitivity. Analogous conclusions apply to the CERN Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) and International Linear Collider (ILC).

Abstract:This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

Abstract:There exists a world--wide consensus for a future $e^+e^-$ Linear Collider in the energy range between $\sqrt{s}=500--1000$ GeV as the next large facility in HEP. The Linear Collider has a large physics potential for the discovery of new physics beyond the Standard Model and for precision studies of the Standard Model itself. It is well suited to complement and extend the physics program of the LHC. The use of polarised beams at a Linear Collider will be one of the powerful tools. In this paper some highlights of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model at a future Linear Collider with polarised $e^-$ and $e^+$ beams are summarised.

Abstract:I summarize an update on our previous study (J. Bagger et al. Phys. Rev. D49, 1246) for a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking sector via longitudinal vector boson scattering at the 14 TeV Large Hadron Collider. In the update, the decay mode $ZZ\to \ell^+\ell^- \nu \bar \nu$ and a new vector-resonance signal via $q\bar q' \to V \to W^+W^-/ W^\pm Z$ are also included.
