Abstract:From 25 to 27 June,2012 the"Symposium of New Advances in the Investigation of Marine Cultural Heritage"was held at Xiamen University. Altogether 47 articles were submitted to the meeting by more than 40 participators of the subject"Investigation of Marine Cultural Heritage circum China Seas,"which is one of the major projects sponsored by the national funds for social sciences. These papers deal with theories of marine culture and marine archaeology,heritage of marine material culture( including ancient seaarea settlements and ports,wreck cargoes,remains of marine economy and vestiges of coast defense),and maritime nonmaterial cultural heritage( including folk shipbuilding standards,traditional nautical techniques and seamen's social and humane conditions),which cover achievements of multidisciplinary studies related to various periods and areas,and represent the newest advances in the multidisciplinary researches on Chinese marine cultural heritage.

A New Horizon of the Study of Classical Chinese Literature

Abstract:In recent decade,the research on overseas Chinese classics has become a new trend in the international sinology.There are profound internal and external reasons to this trend,and the formation of the trend is realized by newly- found materials which call for a new theoretical proposition and a new method of thinking. The"novelty"about the trend shows in the close-reading of new materials and the reflection of academic position of sinology,and these practices may be expected to initiate a new departure for the Chinese scholarship in the 21th century. In brief,the research paradigm will shift from"the Western dame"to"the Eastern daughter. "This paper focuses on the relationship between the Chinese literature and East Asian civilizations,and proposes five areas of research which may benefit from overseas classical texts in Chinese language. It describes the potential space for exploration of the classical Chinese research and argues for the"necessary tension"between facts and theory.

Many leaners studied in these fields,such as CAO Xue-qin's character ideas, the whole success about character and character's colorful speciality of A Dream of Red Mansions.Some leaners also studied kinds of special “role,such as “the girl fight for love, “a person act as a passer, “a person to server as a contrary,“the severe father, “the kindly mother and “monk and nun.At the same time,some scholars studied the method of shaping character,such as portrait discription, mental changes discription,trival things discription,the character's spoken language and deed discription as well as some others the character theory of artistic skill.Some leaners even studied the important role about drawing,song,poem and medicine takes in characters.These studies give us much help to learn the achievement in the new century.

Abstract:As an important visual angle in the studies of the Chinese society, and for its great significance to constructing the harmonious society, the folk faith is receiving more and more attention of the academia. Since the School of History and Culture of Shandong University have undertaken the subject “Studies of Folk Faith and the Chinese Society”, one of the key subjects in the National Ministry of Education, they have proceeded with the relation between folk faith and religion, made deep inquiry into the theory and method of the studies of folk faith and the Chinese society, and have achieved considerable progress. The comments provided by domestic and international scholars are part of the achievements.

Abstract:This article deals with the academic orientation of the Chinese overseas studies. From a perspective of academic history, the author points out the Chinese overseas studies obviously cannot become an independent discipline because of its concrete subject matter and impossibility of scientific abstraction. However, the appearance of various interdisciplinary subjects will definitely facilitate the establishment of the Chinese overseas studies as a relatively unique field in the future.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of and comments on a symposium concerning modern Chinese history held in Beijing, China in October 2009. It is composed of four parts: first, the paradigm issues of modern Chinese historical studies; second, indigenous reorientation and the study of regional social history; third, the relationship between social history and regional social history; fourth, the history of scholarship on the Chinese revolution. All the conference participants were prestigious scholars in the fields of modern Chinese history and Ming–Qing historical studies in Mainland China. The attending scholars provided in-depth and well considered views about the macro issues of this discipline. Furthermore, the discussion was very active and productive. This paper reflects the latest trends in the field of modern Chinese historical studies in Mainland China.

Abstract:The article is a historiographical survey of the study by Chinese scholars on the Chinese overseas during the Ming-Qing period.The works during the time are mainly reminiscences,memoirs or records,and usually more descriptive by nature,but their value as historical data is very important.The author also analyzes Mr.Liang Qichao's theory of “Chinese migration as colonization” and thinks highly of Mr.Liang's pioneering study of the Chinese overseas.

As a typical example of the 20th-centuryforeign scholars working on the history of Chinese novels, Shionoya deserves our dueattention for the special features and historlcal contributions of his A Concise Hlstory ofChinese Novels. His framework of ancient Chinese novels, which was developed andperfected by Lu. Hsun,has far-reaching signlflcance. His academlc view embraces both theeast and the west. His approach puts stress on the comparison between ancient Chinesenovels and the western and Japanese ones. He emphasizes the influence of ancient novels onlater literature as well as the exploratlon of Chlnese society and China's natlonal characterthrough novels. From all this,we can learn a lot even today.

Among the researchers,Ye Shuxian's study has opened up a new path in the study of Shan Hai Ching.He tries to decode Shan Hai Ching in the way of archaeology of knowledge,and seaches the modern explanation of this ancient classic,from the anthropological cross-cultural perspective,based on theories and methodologies of different disciplines.

Abstract:Cosponsored by the Chinese Society for the History of Relations between China and Foreign Countries (CSHRCF), Hong Kong Chinese Wannian Internet Ltd., Beijing University of Language and Culture, Beijing College of Administration, The Center for Overseas Sinology Studies of Beijing Foreign Language University, and the Southeast Asia Research Institute of Xiamen University, an academic conference on overseas Sinology and the cultural exchanges between China and Southeast Asia was held in Xiamen from November 28 to December 1, 1999. One hundred and two people attended the conference. The main topics were introductory study of Sinology abroad and the cultural exchanges between China and Southeast Asia.
