Abstract:Systematic oxidations of sulfides with sodium chlorite have been investigated in aprotic solvents under mild and neutral conditions, Metal catalysis is essential for the efficient oxidation,and conversion of a wide variety of diaryl, alkyl aryl, dialkyl and cyclic sulfides into the corresponding sulfoxides can be favoured by the catalytic presence of manganese(III) acetylacetonate in acetone with the aid of moist alumina in general or dry alumina in particular cases in a rapid, high-yielding manner. This simple procedure has also been found to be an easy method for chemoselective transformation of functionalised sulfides without extensive undesirable side-reactions.

Abstract:An efficient and mild method is reported for the construction of beta-chlorotetrahydrofuran derivatives by 5-endo chlorocycloetherification of homoallylic alcohols. The system employs sulfuryl chloride as the chlorinating agent under catalyst-free conditions. A variety of homoallylic alcohols with aryl or alkyl substituents were smoothly converted into beta-chlorotetrahydrofurans in yields up to 98%.

Abstract:A simple method to synthesize diverse sulfonyl chlorides through NaClO2-mediated oxidative chlorosulfonation of S-alkyl isothiourea salts is presented. The approach features safe operation, environmental friendliness, convenient purification procedures, and delivers high yields of up to 96%. The procedure is also applicable to substrates such as thiols, disulfides, thioacetates, and xanthates. It is a versatile and convenient method for the synthesis of various sulfonyl chlorides from different thiol precursors and derivatives.

Abstract:An efficient and selective method for oxidation of glycosyl sulfides to the corresponding glycosyl sulfoxides with metalloporphyrins as catalysts and sodium hypochlorite as oxidant was achieved under mild conditions. High chemoselectivity and diastereomeric excesses were obtained. Both acid-labile protected groups and carbon-carbon double bonds of allyl groups tolerated under these conditions.

Abstract:An efficient copper-catalyzed tandem oxidation/alpha-formylation reaction of 2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroles in an oxygen atmosphere has been developed. The new reaction is conducted in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which serves as both the carbonyl carbon source and solvent, in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid to directly generate structurally diverse alpha-formylpyrrole derivatives in one pot in moderate to good yields. Sensitive aldehyde groups remain intact in the presence of an oxidant, trifluoroacetic acid and a transition metal salt. A possible mechanism is presented.

Abstract:Metal-free aerobic oxidation of aryl sulfides to sulfoxides and sulfones has been developed in the presence of aliphatic aldehydes with excellent selectivity and yields. The reaction proceeded under mild conditions with the catalysis of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). Control experiments indicated that the reaction underwent a free radical pathway with the acylperoxyl radicals generated from aldehydes in situ as the key intermediates. The aromatic aldehydes were less efficient in the sulfide oxidation, which might be explained by the fact that the aromatic ring dispersed the electrons of free radicals and thus weakened the attacking ability of peroxy free radicals.

Abstract:Direct conversion of the readily available alkyl bromides and alcohols to value-added epoxides using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) under mild reaction conditions has been developed. Benzyl and allyl bromides, and activated and unactivated alcohols all proceeded smoothly to give epoxides in high to excellent yield. Dimethyl sulfide, generated by DMSO oxidations, was in situ elaborated to form the substituted dimethyl sulfonium ylide species that participates in the Corey–Chaykovsky epoxidation in a domino and one-pot fashion, respectively.

Abstract:Sulfo(xo)nium diacylmethylides (sulfur ylides) are simple, stable, readily prepared, and versatile synthons. Compared with the sulfo(xo)nium monoacylmethylides, they can be compatible with more rigorous reaction conditions and showcase unique characteristics due to their excellent stability. This concept article provides an account for the syntheses of sulfo(xo)nium diacylmethylides, including the utilization of active methylene compounds, carbene precursors, sulfo(xo)nium monoacylmethylides, and electron‐deficient alkynes as substrates, with discussions on substrate scopes, proposed mechanisms, selected product examples, and applications. Challenges for further exploration and prospect on sulfo(xo)nium diacylmethylides in the future are also suggested.

Abstract:Thiosulfonates and disulfides are important scaffolds in bioactive molecules and drugs, yet methods for the synthesis of these compounds that start from simple and commercially available feedstocks with sustainable routes are scarce. In this report, we present a green protocol for the synthesis of these valuable S-S motifs through selective oxidation of thiols using H2O2 or air as oxidant and anionic polyoxomolybdate (Mo8O264-) as catalyst. Notable features of this method are scalability, operational simplicity, broad functional-group compatibility, and good chemoselectivity. Mechanistic studies, such as radical trapping experiments, kinetic experiments, cyclic voltammetry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectral monitoring of the reaction mixture support formation of a molybdenum(v)-hydroxo-species and a molybdenum(vi)-peroxo-species to drive the two different catalytic cycles, respectively. We report a polyoxomolybdate ([N(n-Bu)4]4Mo8O26) for the selective oxidation of thiols to thiosulfonates and disulfides with H2O2 and air as the oxidant, respectively.

Abstract:A novel protocol for synthesizing sulfonyl fluorides from thiols in one pot is reported. Utilizing SOCl 2 and H 2 O 2 as low-cost and convenient reagents allows the direct oxidative chlorination of readily available thiol derivatives to give the corresponding sulfonyl chlorides, with subsequent fluoride–chloride exchange mediated by KHF 2 giving access to the desired sulfonyl fluorides. This transformation features mild conditions, operational simplicity and high efficiency, and utilizes a broad substrate scope, including a variety of aryl, alkyl, benzyl and heteroaryl thiols.
