A Control Study of Psycho-education On Care Givers of the Inpatients with Eating Disorder

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the mental status of the care givers of inpatients with eating disorder;to explore the effectiveness of psycho-education on those care givers.Methods:37 mothers of the patients with eating disorder were enrolled in this study and randomized into two groups,intervention group(n=18)and control group(n=19).Psycho-education was given to the intervention group once a week for 6 weeks;usual care was given to the control group.All the subjects were tested with SAS,SDS,SCL-90 and GWB(global well-being scale)before and after the 6 weeks.Results:By the time of admission of the patients,56.8% of the mothers show minor to severe depressive symptoms,24.3% of them show anxiety symptoms.Compare to pre-intervention,the mothers showed significant improvement on all the scales except for the GWB(SDS:31.5±6.8/40.8±8.9,P=0.007;SAS:36.3±8.0/45.0±8.2,P=0.006;SCL-90 total score:23.4±22.6/53.6±18.1,P=0.002);The control group also showed some improvement on several index including the somatic factor,obsessional factor,depressive factor,hostile factor and psychotic factor and the total score of SCL-90(e.g.total score of SCL-90:42.4±53.1/59.6±51.6,P=0.001).The differences between the two groups were compared,the intervention group got greater reduction rates on seore of SDS,SAS,and SCL-90(0.44±0.28 /0.12±0.38,P=0.004;0.16±0.30 /0.05±0.19,P=0.025;0.55±0.52 /0.35±0.38,P=0.048;0.40±1.03 /0.16±0.48,P=0.021).Conclusion:The mental health status of the families was improved after a period of admission of the patients with eating disorder.The psycho-education on the care givers may help more effectively.This conclusion needs to be testified further by enlarging the sample size.
