Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride is a polymer of low surface energy, resistance to UV degradation, atmospheric chemical attack, algae and fungal attack. It is highly flexible and resistant to cracking, making it easy to handle during installation. Hence, PVDF usually is used as the topcoat of membrane structures, such as roof materials of vehicle, tent fabrics, raincoat material, and the cover of outdoor air-conditioner. A further modified PVDF film with super hydrophobic property may be even superior as the coating layer of a self-cleaning surface. The dusts on these surfaces would be washed away easily by rain, which saves a great deal of manpower and cost for cleaning services. The lotus flower is always considered to be a sacred plant, which can protect itself against dirt, attack of microbes, spores, and dust, leading to the self-cleaning effect or the so-called "lotus effect". Researched by the scientists, the Lotus leaf "self-cleaning" surface is hydrophobic and rough, showing the micro-and nano-structures. In this work, to mimick the lotus leaf morphology, the microstructure was constructed by investigating the preparation technology of PVDF membrane, and the hydrophobic nanostructure was attained by chemical vapor deposition using methyltrichlorosilane. SEM and AFM images show that a lotus-leaf-like surface structure was clearly observed on the PVDF membrane. The water contact angle and sliding angle on the prepared lotus-leaf-like PVDF membrane were 155 degrees and 4 degrees, respectively.
