Abstract:The paper opens with a brief statement of the two conceptual frameworks on which the analysis is based. The author then takes up in turn the five classical methods of shaping students' learning: didactic instruction in the form of lectures; discussion methods; practical work in laboratories, studios etc; provision for the students' private study, including individualized learning techniques and computer‐based methods; and the assessment of students' progress. He outlines the main departures from customary practice in each area, with special attention to small‐group techniques. Finally, since a critical aspect of development is the dissemination of fresh techniques, there is a section on development strategy.

Abstract:Marketisation, increased student mobility, the massification of Higher Education (HE) and stagnating staff numbers in universities have combined to cause a ripple effect of change both in the demography and size of university classes across the world. This has implications for the quality and equity of learning and the need to examine and to transform pedagogical practices. Despite the growing attention of literature on teaching large classes, there is a scarcity of research addressing the twin issues of large classes in an increasingly internationalised context. This paper seeks to contribute towards filling this gap. The paper provides a theoretical exploration of the causes of such classes in HE, reviews the empirical evidence against large class teaching and examines the difficulties associated with teaching demographically diverse classes in HE. The paper identifies eight pedagogical strategies to address the issues of class size and diversity, which relate to increasing student participation and engagement; increasing curricula access and the language of instruction; increasing staff intercultural understanding; increasing opportunities for deep learning for all; on-going monitoring of student satisfaction; increasing opportunities to achieve; diversification of assessment; and the merit of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS). It calls for new research on global learning cultures; reviews of global assessment and promising pedagogical practices and processes.

Enhancing large-class teaching: a systematic comparison of rich-media materials

Abstract:Large cohorts (>200 students) are an ever-increasing presence in the UK higher education (HE) sector. Providing excellent teaching and learning to these large classes is an ongoing challenge for teaching faculty, a challenge intensified when the cohort comprises 85% non-native English speakers. This paper presents the findings of a project to supplement face-to-face lectures on a large campus-based taught MSc programme with a set of rich-media materials. These resources consisted of audio podcasts, audio-narrated slides, short video segments and full-video lecture capture. The aim of the study was to examine student usage of, and preference for, these different rich-media materials. Key findings are that students valued most highly the full-video lecture capture followed by the audio-narrated slides, using the materials primarily to consolidate their understanding and as revision aids. Students also emphasised the central importance of the face-to-face lecture – viewing the rich-media materials as complementary to, rather than as a replacement for the traditional lecture. Nor did the majority of students see the provision of videoed lectures as a reason for non-attendance at lectures. The findings of this study provide confirmatory evidence of the ongoing importance of the traditional lecture in large cohort HE teaching together with an acknowledgement of the benefits that rich-media materials can bring to the student learning experience.

Abstract:AbstractTeaching English to large classes is a common phenomenon in developing countries, and China is no exception. Such an issue has attracted attention of many researchers worldwide over the past two decades. However, such research in China has been relatively rare. This paper reports an investigation into teachers’ perceptions and practices of teaching English to large classes in Chinese schools. The study used both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore teachers’ attitude towards their perceived problems regarding teaching English to large classes, and the strategies they used to cope with large classes. Results show that an overwhelming majority of the Chinese English teachers (92.6%) hold a negative attitude towards teaching English in large classes. Pedagogical issues, management-related difficulties and psychological burden emerged as major obstacles. Despite these problems, teachers were seeking strategies to cope with the problems in their daily practices with more or less success.

Abstract:As a cornerstone of higher education in China, the quality of undergraduate teaching is crucial for nurturing high-caliber innovative talents that meet the needs of national and social development. Small-class teaching has emerged as a focal point in the reform of undergraduate education and represents an important approach to cultivating top-notch innovative talents. Veterinary medicine is a scientific discipline that encompasses the prevention, control, diagnosis, and treatment of animal diseases. It also involves efforts to prevent the transmission of animal diseases to humans. The training of professionals in this field should emphasize the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical skills. Therefore, small-class teaching facilitates open communication between educators and students, which is instrumental in fostering a new generation of veterinarians equipped with robust professional knowledge, excellent practical abilities, and strong scientific literacy. This paper provides a preliminary exploration into the strategy and direction of small-class teaching within China's veterinary medicine undergraduate programs by summarizing its characteristics, advantages, and existing challenges. The unique traits of veterinary medicine are also taken into consideration during this analysis.

Abstract:Teaching a large class can present real challenges in design, management and standardisation of assessment practices. One of the main dilemmas for university teachers is how to implement effective formative assessment practices with accompanying high-quality feedback consistently over time with large classroom groups. This article reports on how elements of formative practices can be implemented as part of summative assessment in very large undergraduate cohorts (n = 1500 in one semester), studying in different modes (on- and off-campus), with multiple markers, and under common cost and time constraints. Design features implemented include the use of exemplars, rubrics and audio feedback. The article draws on the reflections of the leading teacher, and argues that, for summative assessment to benefit learners, it should contain formative assessment elements. The teaching practices utilised in the case study provide some means to resolve the tensions between formative assessment and summative assessment that may be more generally applicable.

Abstract:This study addresses the problems in traditional English literature teaching methods for Chinese English majors, proposing a new teaching approach based on smart education concepts to enhance learning effectiveness. An evaluation of a semester-long reform in teaching methods is conducted using a quantitative methodology. The findings reveal significant differences in learning outcomes between the experimental and control classes, suggesting the new model's positive influence on student academic performances. Machine learning algorithms are also used to analyze student classroom behavior, indicating a significant increase in active engagement. In conclusion, students' learning outcomes, as well as engagement, can be substantially improved by integrating smart education techniques into English literature instruction.

Abstract:With the advancement of cultural globalization, China has increased its support for the study of British and American literature. However, due to the great differences in the forms of expression and thinking logic between British and American literature and Chinese local literature, it is difficult for Chinese students to learn British and American literature. In order to solve the dilemma of Chinese students learning English and American literature, the team constructed a smart classroom model with flipped classroom as the core based on big data and Internet of Things technology. The smart classroom model is constructed according to the four-layer architecture of the Internet of Things, which is divided into perception layer, network layer, platform layer and application layer. The flipped classroom is in the application layer. The flipped classroom is designed according to the three processes before, during and after class, which has certain theoretical significance. In order to verify the effectiveness of this model, a university in H city was selected for research. Through the control experiment, it was concluded that within a certain error range, the flipped classroom teaching mode can significantly improve the teaching effect of British and American literature compared with the traditional teaching mode. Finally, based on the problems of English and American literature learning, we further deepen the model of flipped classroom. In the pre-course pre-study stage, teachers should play their organizational role and enhance students' pre-study effect through interesting pre-study methods. Teachers should also pay attention to students' pre-study status and make timely adjustments. In the classroom, teachers need to find students' questions in time and answer common questions in a unified manner and answer individual questions in private, in an effort to improve classroom efficiency and promote the process of internalizing students' knowledge. At the end of the flipped classroom, the classroom should also summarize the lesson, recognize the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson implementation based on the feedback from the students, and clarify the room for improvement of the lesson. At the same time, teachers should also reflect on the flipped classroom model and comprehensively assess its strengths and weaknesses to ensure that this model can be applied to its full value.

Abstract:The development of the internet and communication technology has brought about significant changes in the education field, enhancing teaching methods and affecting students' academic performance by wisely substituting traditional teaching approaches. Modern technologies are being utilized to improve the quality of education, and traditional teaching techniques are being updated by incorporating recent technological tools. Traditional teaching methods, such as textbooks and lecturing using boards, often fail to provide students with the expected level of knowledge. Consequently, researchers have developed new inventive teaching techniques for the convenience of students, including slide-based lectures, e-learning, and learning management systems. As a result of these inventive teaching methods, students gain knowledge, which has a positive and efficient effect on their academic performance and achievement. Studies comparing traditional and inventive teaching methods have found that the latter approach is more effective in enhancing students' educational achievement. Therefore, it is suggested that educational investors invest in inventive teaching approaches, and teachers need to implement novel teaching methods in their classrooms to upgrade students' performance and knowledge. To instruct modern-generation students, tutors need to develop an inventive teaching approach. Past analysis has shown that encouraging learners to think creatively can significantly affect their academic performance and creativity. The proposed study aims to present an overview of existing innovative and traditional teaching methods in technical colleges based on popular libraries. The search results are presented in different forms. Based on the current study, researchers will devise research on enhanced teaching methods, improved quality of education, updated traditional teaching techniques, increased convenience for students, improved educational achievement, encourages creativity, access to information, greater investment in education, upgraded performance, and improved learning outcomes.

Abstract:There has been a long history of Chinese learning and teaching (CLT) in the UK, but until recently CLT was predominantly confined to community schools for Chinese children at weekends and a small number of other schools and universities. Therefore, it had remained peripheral for a long time in terms of student numbers and its position in the education system. This situation has changed dramatically over the last 10 years, as CLT has experienced an unprecedented and rapid development during the period. Today almost all British universities offer some kind of Chinese courses. More and more secondary schools have started, or plan to start, Chinese courses as part of their curriculum ever since Chinese was officially recognised by the government as belonging to modern foreign languages (MFLs). Chinese language and culture activities are getting into more primary schools than ever before. In addition, Chinese language courses have also become commonly available in both public and private institutions for adult and professional learners. This situation presents opportunities as well as challenges. This article aims first to describe briefly the current provision of CLT in the UK, its background and characteristics, and then to give some preliminary analyses of the issues and a prediction of possible trends concerning the development of CLT in the UK in the next few years.
Unmasking the Teaching Quality of Higher Education: Students’ Course Experience and Approaches to Learning in China

Abstract:The quality of teaching in higher education is a topic which has generated heated debate in China, though there has been a remarkable paucity of empirical research into the characteristics of teaching and learning in Chinese universities. This study examined Chinese university students' course experience and its influence on their approaches to learning. A sample of 2529 students from 15 full-time regular universities responded to the questionnaire. Results indicated that the Course Experience Questionnaire could be a promising instrument for assessing the teaching quality in Chinese universities. Chinese undergraduate teaching was characterised by the dominance of developing students' generic skills, but a lack of emphasis on students' independence. The study revealed some desirable influences of university teaching on students' approaches to learning, but an increase in instructors' effort and commitment to teaching was found to facilitate a surface rather than a deep approach to learning. These findings highlighted the need to reflect on the teacher-centred nature of undergraduate teaching in China.

The author complied the necessity of smart classroom construction from the theoretical level, as well as the current construction status of the smart classroom at home and abroad, and finally, this paper takes Guangxi University of Finance and Economics as an example to analyze the teaching advantages of the school, how to promote the deep integration of information technology in education and teaching, and put forward a powerful plan for the construction of the smart classroom in school teaching, and the practical application of group discussion in smart classroom as an example to discuss the smart teaching. Abstract:Research on teaching from a student learning perspective has identified two qualitatively different approaches to university teaching. They are an information transmission and teacher-focused approach, and a conceptual change and student-focused approach. The fundamental difference being in the former the intention is to transfer information to students, while in the latter the intention is to change and develop student understanding. Much of our research has been conducted in first-year classes of 100 or more students. The paper begins by outlining a model of teaching and learning based upon this research. It then reviews the quantitative research showing the relationship between teachers’ approaches to teaching in large classes and their students’ approaches to learning. Further analyses of previously collected data are used to identify the size of the relationship between teachers’ approaches and their students’ approaches. The paper concludes by discussing how a more conceptual change and student-focused approach can be manifested in large classes.
