Abstract:Object To study the relationship between the carotid artery affection and the subtype of anterior-circulation infarction. Methods The common and internal carotid artery of 116 cases suffered cerebral infaretion in carotid artery system were examined by color ultrasound. Research the characteristic of carotid artery affection and analyse the relationship between the different type of atherosclerotic plaques and the subtype of brain infarction. Results ① The 68.2% of the patients suffered cerebral infarction existed a different degree of carotid artery affection. 69.8% of the patients had slight stricture of their carotid artery. ② The patients with the left-cerebrum infarction were found to have more plaques in their left-carotid artery than their rights. And the same conditions were found in the ritht-cerebrum infarctions(P<0.005). With the increase of the carotid artery affection and plaques, there were larger areas of infarction in those patients(P<0.005). ③ There were 35 unstable plaques and 9 stable plaques in infarctions with the cortical branch and the stem of the artery. The unstable plaques were 5 cases,4cases and 9cases in the central branch infarction, cerebral wastershed infarction and the white matter harmness respectively. The stable plaques in these patients were 17 cases,7cases and 20cases. Conclusions ① There is a reletionship between the affection of carotid artery system and the anterior-circulation infarction. And the anterior-circulation infarction had a relation not only with degree of the carotid artery stricture but also with the type of atherosclerotic plaques. ② There is a reletionship between carotid artery affection and the brain infarction. The severity of infarction was dependent partly on the degree of atherosclerotic. The circle of Willis not only regulates the blood supply in brain,but also precipitated the micro-thrombus transferred from the blood vessel to others. ③ There exists relationship between the unstable plaques to infarctions with the cortical branch and the stem of the artery. And the stable plaques have a relation with the central branch infarction,cerebral wastershed infarction and the white matter harmness.
