Abstract:Objective:To investigate the influence of lead and cadmium in utero exposure on birth weight and gestational age. Methods:The placenta samples of 261 neonates from Guiyu and Shantou were collected. The placental lead and cadmium concentrations were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The self-designed questionnaires were administered. Results:The placental lead concentration was 399.9ng/g and the placental cadmium concentration was 96.6 ng/g in Guiyu group. The placental lead concentration was 421.0 ng/g and the placental cadmium concentration was 20.9 ng/g in control group. The placental lead and cadmium concentrations were positively correlated with gestational age.The placental cadmium concentration was negatively correlated with birth weight. The placental cadmium concentration also correlated with whether the house was used as workshop or not,the type of fuel for cooking and milk products consumption during pregnancy. Conclusion:Lead and cadmium in utero exposure obviously increase the gestational age in the electronic waste recycling area, and cadmium in utero exposure obviously decreases the birth weight. These results suggest that lead and cadmium in utero exposure can affect the development of fetus.
