Abstract:Traffic accidents cause significant economic losses, which include not only direct costs, such as damage to vehicles and road facilities, but also indirect costs, such as traffic delays for other travelers. For severe accidents involving violations of laws, the direct economic loss is trivial compared with the indirect economic loss resulting from long hours of congestion and large numbers of affected travelers. Drivers who violate transportation laws should be subject to legal liabilities for both direct and indirect economic losses. To calculate the penalties for violating laws related to traffic accidents, it is important to establish a standard for evaluating the indirect costs of accidents. A general framework for estimating accident-induced indirect costs is proposed. As a key component of the estimation procedures, the delay estimation can be conducted by reconstructing the spatial–temporal traffic flow evolutions on the basis of intelligent transportation system sensors or archived data, or both. The proposed evaluation methodology, which measures on-site arrival–departure cumulative flows and speeds, was compared with the spatial–temporal traffic state evolution approach. As a case study, the proposed approach was applied to two severe traffic accidents that occurred on the G6 Highway (Beijing–Tibet Highway). The promising results verify the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed procedures. The analytic study results also support drafting the related national standard in China.

Abstract:Traffic forecasting is an important part of the smart transportation system, and accurate traffic forecasting is crucial for urban traffic scheduling and public travel planning. The traffic forecasting problem is greatly affected by the time dimension, and it is of great significance to investigate and summarize the related methods of time series traffic forecasting. Aiming at the problem of time series traffic forecasting, this paper focuses on the existing time series traffic forecasting models based on deep learning, and studies and analyzes the application fields and structural characteristics of different forecasting models. Finally, the current mainstream traffic prediction datasets are introduced, and the main challenges and solutions in the current traffic prediction field are discussed, which provides a reference for solving the problem of intelligent traffic prediction.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to offer the predicted real-time dynamic values of traffic volume at junctions for the City Traffic Flow Guidance System, thereby ensuring the accuracy and effectiveness of vehicle guidance. According to the least square approaching principle, a datum curve model and a difference correction model are first established using exponent smooth forecasting method. Based on this, a real-time dynamic model for forecasting traffic volume is developed, and the application of the model is illustrated using an example.

Abstract:The real time forecast for short-term traffic flow is the foundation of urban traffic control and guidance, which is also one of main functions of intelligent transportation system. It's proved by studies that none of forecasting models can dominate the others in all situations. A intelligent forecasting system for short-term traffic flow is proposed and constituted in this paper, in which the intelligent model choice and combination of forecasting results given by different models are implemented based on the thought of intelligent and combining forecast. It's shown by simulations that the system has good adaptability to the change of environment and can improve the forecast veracity. Applying the multi-agent technique, this forecast system is constructed and the architecture and principle of such an intelligent forecast supported system based on multi-agent is also mentioned in this paper.

Abstract:Short-term traffic flow prediction is the basis of dynamic traffic control and guidance. In this article, a new fore- casting method, which combines fuzzy C-mean clustering and neural network techniques, is used to forecast short-term (traffic) flow. Based on the same real-time data, the forecasting results of this method are computed, and compared to other methods, e.g., Bp neural network and fuzzy neural network. The compute outcomes show that this method can produce (more) exact prediction results than other two methods.

Abstract:A combined method based on of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Subtraction Fuzzy Clustering (SFC), and Non-Parametric Regression (NPR) is proposed in view of nonlinearity and uncertainty for short-term forecasting of real-time traffic flow. A highly efficient case database is created from the original traffic volumes after the operations of PCA and SFC. The data-driven method of K-nearest neighbours NPR is used to make the forecasting. An emulation experiment is designed to test the validity of the method. The example results show it is better than normal NPR and meets real-time requirement.

Abstract:Traffic flow on a given link in an urban road network can be divided into several traffic streams, depending on their turning manoeuvres when entering and leaving the link. These traffic streams may experience various travel times due to multiple reasons, such as fluctuations in traffic demand/supply and stochastic arrivals/departures at signalised intersections. However, the current travel time estimation methods take traffic flow as a whole and produce a single estimation value. This approach can produce large errors. Furthermore, given the travel time information of each traffic stream, the results of dynamic traffic assignment models can be made much more accurate and the effect of signal controls improved. In this paper, a comparison analysis is conducted to verify the significant difference in link travel times of different traffic streams. Then, link travel time is redefined in consideration of traffic stream directions. This process is also successful in filtering noise, as shown in the numerical experiments. In addition, existing estimation methods cannot reflect real values or fluctuations of travel times in sampling intervals without any valid observational data. To solve this problem, a regression model is built and integrated into the travel time estimation model. Error analysis of several links on two different days demonstrates the improvements made by the model.

Abstract:The short-term forecast of traffic flow is the foundation of a successful control and route guidance in intelligent transport systems (ITS). Many attempts on the forecast methods have been done in recent years. The effort of this paper focus on the shortterm predictability of traffic flow what determines whether the same or similar methods applied in middle or long term forecast is also effective to short term. After the relation among the predictability, self-similarity and fractal is explained in the paper, an approach to verify the existence of self-similarity in traffic system based on the state space reconstruction is proposed and a practical example on this method is given.

Abstract:Near future travel-time information is one of the most critical factors that travellers consider before making trip decisions. In efforts to provide more reliable future travel-time estimations, transportation engineers have examined various techniques developed in the last three decades. However, there have not been sufficiently systematic and through reviews so far. In order to effectively support various transportation strategies and applications including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), it is necessary to apply appropriate forecasting methods for matching circumstances in a timely manner. This paper conducts a comprehensive review study focusing on literatures, including modern techniques proposed recently, related to travel time and traffic condition predictions that are based on ‘data-driven' approaches. Based on the underlying mechanisms and theoretical principles, different approaches are categorized as parametric (linear regression and time series) and non-parametric approaches (artificial intelligence and pattern searching). Then, the approaches are analysed for their strengths, potential weaknesses, and performances from five main perspectives that are prediction range, accuracy, efficiency, applicability, and robustness.

Abstract:Non-recurrent congestion caused by traffic incident is difficult to predict but should be dealt with in a timely and effective manner to reduce its influence on road capacity reduction and enormous travel time loss. Influence factor analysis and reasonable prediction of traffic incident duration are important in traffic incident management to predict incident impacts and aid in the implementation of appropriate traffic operation strategies. The objective of this study is to conduct a thorough review and discusses the research evolution, mainly including the different phases of incident duration, data resources, and the various methods that are applied in the traffic incident duration influence factor analysis and duration time prediction. In order to achieve the goal of this study, we presented a systematic review of traffic incident duration time estimation and prediction methods developed based on various data resource, methodologies etc. based on the previous studies, we analyse (i) Data resources and characteristics: different traffic incident time phases, data set size, incident types, duration time distribution, available data resources, significant influence factors and unobserved heterogeneity and randomness, (ii) traffic incident duration analysis methods, mainly including hazard-based duration model and regression and statistical tests, (iii) traffic incident duration prediction methods and evaluation of prediction accuracy. After a comprehensive review of literature, this study identifies and analyses future challenges and what can be achieved in the future to estimate and predict the traffic incident duration time.

Abstract:Forecasting short-term traffic flow is one critical component in traffic management to improve operational efficiency. Data driven method, which trains the predictor with historical data across a given past period, have been proved to perform well. However, days which experience significantly different traffic flow patterns, negatively influence forecasting results. This paper proposes an advanced method, making use of appropriate prediction based on pattern matching. First, historical data is divided into several groups, according to their patterns, by clustering algorithms. Then the predictor is trained for each group based on a convolutional neural networks and long-short-term-memory model. For each time point, the degree of similarity between the target day and each group is measured, and the predictor trained by the group possessing the highest degree of similarity is selected to be appropriate. Based on a case study from Seattle, we show that selecting an appropriate predictor can significantly improve the accuracy of predictions. In addition, we demonstrate that the new method can, in general, outperform alternative methods in terms of prediction accuracy and stability.

Abstract:Intersection traffic congestion evaluation is essential for effective intelligent transportation system planning, and an objective and precise assessment of traffic congestion is vital to ensure the smooth circulation of traffic. Multiple criteria decision-making is a method for evaluating the degree of traffic congestion. A hybrid multiple criteria decision-making method integrating the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, techniques for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution, and gray correlation techniques are presented in this work. The proposed method applied fuzzy analytic hierarchy process to determine the weight of the evaluation index; subsequently, gray correlation techniques for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution were integrated to construct the hybrid decision-making method. A case study of traffic congestion at intersections with five evaluation indexes verified the effectiveness of the hybrid method. The evaluation results of the different methods show that the proposed method overcomes the one-sidedness of analytical hierarchy process–techniques for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution and analytical hierarchy process–gray correlation. Thus, the proposed hybrid decision-making model provides a more accurate and reliable method for evaluating the degree of traffic congestion.

Abstract:Short-term traffic flow prediction received considerations from different fields, because of its essentialness in traffic engineering and its theoretical difficulties. In this paper, we studied two important approaches of traffic flow prediction: detrending methods and multi-regime methods. First, we compared their differences in modeling philosophy and compared their merits as well as shortcomings. Then, we tested several representative prediction models of these two approaches on the openly accessible PeMS traffic flow database to find their merits and shortcomings. The obtained results threw some interesting light on how to select the appropriate traffic prediction models in practices.

Abstract:Computational technologies under the domain of intelligent systems are expected to help the rapidly increasing traffic congestion problem in recent traffic management. Traffic management requires efficient and accurate forecasting models to assist real time traffic control systems. Researchers have proposed various computational approaches, especially in short-term traffic flow forecasting, in order to establish reliable traffic patterns models and generate timely prediction results. Forecasting models should have high accuracy and low computational time to be applied in intelligent traffic management. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate recent computational modeling approaches utilized in short-term traffic flow forecasting. These approaches are evaluated by real-world data collected on the British freeway (M6) from 1st to 30th November in 2014. The results indicate that neural network model outperforms generalized additive model and autoregressive integrated moving average model on the accuracy of freeway traffic forecasting.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of traffic congestion in a certain area, this paper develops a set of traffic optimization decision system. For analyzing the actual traffic conditions and calculating the traffic volume, density and traffic speed, a traffic prediction model is established and updated iteratively to modify the prediction model parameters. Based on this model, the congestion degree is estimated at the current road section, thus, an intelligent decision-making and the coordinated optimization methods are proposed. Moreover, this paper implements some application experiments on the isometric road of a three-intersection and obtains better prediction results of traffic density and traffic speed on the three-section highway. At the same time, compared with other existing prediction methods, the prediction model presented in this paper not only has higher accuracy, shorter prediction time and stronger anti-interference ability, but also has better effect on vehicle diversion. In addition, it also greatly relieves the traffic pressure on the road, maximizes the complementary advantages between intersections, and balances the good cooperation between each intersection.

Abstract:Short-term traffic flow forecasting play an important pole in urban traffic control and induction system. Non-Parametric Regression (NPR) is one perfect method for short-term traffic flow forecasting based on pattern recognition. At present time, the application research of NPR for short-term traffic flow forecasting is confined in small-scale fields and has less study of forecasting mechanism. This paper is trying to use the simulation measure to research the applicability of NPR in short-term traffic flow forecasting and study the forecasting principles by adjusting different system parameters. A typical road network is constructed as the study object in this paper. The forecasting problems of NPR are studied based on it. The data pre-processing of principal component analysis and cluster analysis are used for better forecasting results. Other network structures have only different simulation parameters with the presented network.

Abstract:Short-term traffic flow forecasting is a research focus of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). From a practical view, a combined forecast model is studied in this paper, which includes Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) model, autoregressive model and neighbourhood regression model. Forecast mechanism and specification are discussed in the paper in detail. In order to update forecast model real-timely, recursive regression method is used to change weights and coefficients of sub-models. This model has been applied to Beijing Traffic Forecast System and the average relative error of prediction is less than 15% in practice.

Abstract:Emerging technologies provide a venue on which on-line traffic controls and management systems can be implemented. For such applications, having access to accurate predictions on travel-times are mandatory for their successful operations. Transportation engineers have developed numerous approaches including model-based approaches. The model-based approaches consider underlying traffic mechanisms and behaviors in developing the prediction procedures and they are logically intuitive unlike datadriven approaches. Because of this explanation power, the model-based approaches have been developed for the on-line control purposes. For departments of transportation (DOTs), it is still a challenge to choose a specific approach that meets their requirements. In efforts to develop a unique guideline for transportation engineers and decision makers when considering for implementing modelbased approaches for highways, this paper reviews model-based travel-time prediction approaches by classifying them into four categories according to the level of details involved in the model: Macroscopic, Mesoscopic, CA-based, and Microscopic. Then each method is evaluated from five main perspectives: Prediction range, Accuracy, Efficiency, Applicability, and Robustness. Finally, this paper concludes with evaluations of model-based approaches in general and discusses them in relation to data-driven approaches along with future research directions.
