Abstract:The expectation of sustainable development of energy and environment has widely attracted public׳s attention, and the high-efficiency heat transfer device is greatly needed. As a new heat transfer device, pulsating heat pipe (PHP) has been considered have a bright prospect due to its obvious advantages – simple structure, low cost and excellent heat transfer capability. A number of experimental and theoretical researches have been conducted on PHP in the past decades since it was proposed by Akachi in 1990. However, due to the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic coupling effect, the operational mechanism of PHP is extremely complex and has not been completely revealed so far. With great expectation of applications for the PHP in the near future, this paper attempts to review the development of PHP on the basis of systematic summary of the latest results of both experimental and theoretical studies. Meanwhile, some promising and innovatory applications of the PHP are also reported. This paper is expected to provide basic reference for future researches.
Theoretical and Experimental Research on Heat Transfer Performance of the Semi-Open Heat Pipe

Abstract:This paper focuses on the heat transfer performance of semi-open heat pipe which is a new type of heat pipe. After analyzing its condensation heat transfer mechanisms theoretically, several semi-open heat pipes in different length ratios and upper hole diameters are studied experimentally and compared with the same dimensions closed heat pipes. Experimental results show that the heat transfer performance of semi-open heat pipe becomes better by increasing heat transfer rate. At the first transitional point, the heat transfer performance of semi-open heat pipe approaches the level of the closed heat pipe. It is suitable to choose upper small hole about 1 mm in diameter and length ratio larger than 0.6 for the semi-open heat pipe.

Abstract:Heat pipe is a high efficient diathermanous element and it doesn't need any accessional drive. There are always thermal concentration and no uniformity temperature field in mechanical components, which affect their whole performance. It is a useful way of utilizing heat pipe to dispel heat and poise temperature field. The application of heat pipe in mechanical components is analyzed and summarized. Abstract:Micro heat pipe(MHP) is widely used to cool equipments of aerospace electronics,avionics,military electronics,automotive technologies,computers and so on.It is one of main approaches which can cool electronic components of high heatfluxes effectively.At present,it becomes one of hotspots of modern heat pipe technology.Most of the studies are focused on the principle of heat and mass transfer and vapor-liquid flow in the MHP,novel design of high effective MHP structure,improvement of MHP manufacture technology and so on.In this paper,recent studies on MHP are summarized as four parts: theoretical analysis and experimental study of the MHP principle,design of new structure MHP,manufacture technology,application of MHP,and the development trend.

Abstract:Heat pipe utilizes continuous phase change process within a small temperature drop to achieve high thermal conductivity. For decades, heat pipes coupled with novel emerging technologies and methods (using nanofluids and self-rewetting fluids) have been highly appreciated, along with which a number of advances have taken place. In addition to some typical applications of thermal control and heat recovery, the heat pipe technology combined with the sorption technology could efficiently improve the heat and mass transfer performance of sorption systems for heating, cooling and cogeneration. However, almost all existing studies on this combination or integration have not concentrated on the principle of the sorption technology with acting as the heat pipe technology for continuous heat transfer. This paper presents an overview of the emerging working fluids, the major applications of heat pipe, and the advances in heat pipe type sorption system. Besides, the ongoing and perspectives of the solid sorption heat pipe are presented, expecting to serve as useful guides for further investigations and new research potentials.
Theoretical and Experimental Study on Heat Transfer Characteristics of Water Heat Pipe

Abstract:Heat pipe is an efficient heat transfer element based on two-phase natural circulation, which has advantages of simple structure, strong heat transfer ability, and good isothermal performance. Heat pipes are widely used in heat transfer and other fields, and especially have important applications in nuclear engineering. One of its most important characteristics is the heat transfer limit. In this work, heat transfer limits are first reviewed, and the detailed calculation equations are presented. Then, a Matlab code to calculate heat transfer limits as well as the thermal conductance are provided. Second, an experimental setup for testing the heat transfer characteristics of heat pipes was developed, which could be used to measure the thermal conductance as well as the heat transfer limits. The calculated results show that, for water heat pipes, the capillary limit mainly affects heat transfer in low temperature conditions, while in high temperature conditions, boiling limit dominates. In addition, the experiment results show that the thermal conductance of the measured heat pipe is 7267 W/(m^2*K), which agrees with the calculation result.

Abstract:Pulsating heat pipe (PHP), which is also called oscillating heat pipe (OHP), is a novel type of highly efficient heat transfer component. It is widely applied in many fields, including aerospace technology, cooling of electronic devices and energy-saving technology, etc. In the present paper, the characteristics and working principles of PHPs are first introduced, and then the current research in the field is described from experimental study, theoretical study and practical application achievements. The experimental investigations are mainly focused on the flow visualization and the applications of nano-fluids and other functional fluids to enhance heat transfer performance of the PHPs. It is also pointed out that the current theoretical analyses of the PHP are restricted by further development of two-phase flow theory, and are concentrated in the non-linear analysis. Numerical simulations will become another research focus, especially the combination of the nano-fluids and functional fluids.

Abstract:With the reduction in fossil fuels and growing concerns about global warming, energy has become one of the most important issues facing humanity. It is crucial to improve energy utilization efficiency and promote a low-carbon transition. In comparison with traditional heat exchangers, heat pipe heat exchangers indicate high compactness, a flexible arrangement, complete separation of hot and cold fluids, good isothermal operations, etc. As a result, heat pipe heat exchangers have attracted wide attention and application in various fields in recent years. This paper provides an overview of the application of heat pipe heat exchangers, with a focus on the application in waste heat recovery, and analyzes the opportunities and challenges of heat pipe heat exchanger applications based on existing publications.

Abstract:The heat pipe has a high thermal conductivity, and its basic working principle is to transfer heat through evaporation and condensation through the working medium inside the pipe. Heat pipe has good thermal conductivity, isotherm and other characteristics, and the heat transfer area at both ends can be changed at will, control the temperature and other advantages. Therefore, the heat pipe heat exchanger has the advantages of high heat transfer efficiency, compact structure, small fluid resistance loss, and beneficial to control dew point corrosion. At present, it has been widely used in metallurgy, chemical industry, oil refining, boiler, ceramics, transportation, light textile, machinery and other industries, as energy saving equipment for waste heat recovery and heat energy utilization in the process, and has achieved remarkable economic benefits. Abstract:Energy efficiency issues are being focused on the growing concern of global warming and environmental pollution. The high-temperature heat pipe (HTHP) is an effective and environmental-friendly heat transfer device employed in many industries, including solar power generation, high-temperature flue gas waste heat recovery, industrial furnaces, nuclear industries, and aviation. As a critical factor in HTHPs, thermal performance is mainly introduced in the entire paper. To date, most reviews have been published concerning one or several application scenarios. However, to the best of authors' knowledge, it is hard to find a review discussing how to improve the thermal performance of HTHPs comprehensively. First, the impact on the performance of three main components of HTHPs over the past 30 years is introduced: the working fluid, the HTHP structure, and the wick structure. Herein, it is a considerable review of the optimal operating conditions for each direction, and we expect this paper contribute to improving the thermal performance of HTHPs. Then, current numerical simulations and theoretical research on the heat transfer limit of HTHPs are recommended. The significant hypotheses used in numerical simulations and the present theoretical studies are compiled here. Finally, some potential future directions and tentative suggestions for HTHP research are put forward.

Abstract:Due to the rapid development of science and technology in today's era, electronic equipment is constantly upgrading. Today, the developmental trend of electronic equipment is miniaturization, portability and multi-functionality. However, multi-functionality often means multi-components, so it is undoubtedly a great test of heat dissipation ability to accommodate more components in a smaller volume. Without sufficient heat dissipation capacity, a large number of components will stop working or even be damaged because of the heat generated during operation. As a new passive cooling and heat exchange technology, pulsating heat pipes have many advantages, such as having no external energy input, a simple structure, changeable installation forms and low installation requirements. They have shown great potential in the field of thermal management, and have attracted a lot of scholars' attention since they were put forward. Because of their operational stability and heat exchange ability in high heat flux environments, they are the best choice for cooling electronic equipment at present. If they can be fully studied and utilized, pulsating heat pipes can not only reduce the consumption of heat dissipation resources but also reuse heat energy to realize the sustainable utilization of resources. This paper briefly introduces the demand background and structural principle of pulsating heat pipes, and summarizes the research on the parameters of pulsating heat pipes and the application status of pulsating heat pipes. The parameters involve working fluid type, pipe diameter, elbow number, liquid filling rate, inclination angle, etc. After classifying the parameters that affect the operation results of pulsating heat pipes, this paper summarizes the research at this stage, and points out the lack of research fields, such as heat flux density, and new application fields of unconventional gravity environment by combining the literature content with the current scientific and technological development trends and experimental parameters, such as thermodynamics.

Abstract:The developments on heat transfer enhancement in the shellside of shell-and-tube heat exchangers are presented by this paper.The application range is also described.They are illustrated with active power technology and inactive power technology.The discussion on putting CFD technology into the research of shell-and-tube heat exchangers is shown in brief.The viewpoint is put forward that the way of optimizing the structure of heat exchangers in the future must be achieved by means of combining the technologies of heat transfer enhancement and the CFD technology.

Abstract:A kind of temperature controlled thermal pipe for heat management was advanced for the heat management problem during the process of heat transfer. This heat pipe took advantage of the uncondensable gas to change the transferred heat by changing the area and to make working medium keep the temperature to some extent. Experimental study found that the heat pipe could be self-adjusted and the energy could be assigned according to be change of the heat source and heat load. While there is some influence of different kind of uncondensable gas and working medium on operation property, but the change is a little. It shows that this heat pipe has some applicability and could be spreaded to other situation of thermal transfer and heat management.

Abstract:Loop heat pipe is an efficient two-phase heat transfer device, which has great prospects in the field of heat dissipation of high-heat-flux electronic devices. This paper introduces the three current bottleneck problems of the plate loop heat pipe, namely, the limit heat flux cannot meet the needs of some high-power devices, the temperature fluctuation problem, the failure to start at low power and the problem of temperature overshoot. The reasons for these problems are analyzed and the solutions proposed by researchers in the past decade are summarized, which includes the optimization of wick, the improvement of working fluid and the modification of loop heat pipe structure. The applications of loop heat pipes are also introduced. Finally, the research status of loop heat pipes with flat evaporator is summarized, and further research directions are prospected to improve the comprehensive performance and realize the commercial application of loop heat pipes.

Abstract:Both domestic and international investigations on high-temperature heat pump technology are reviewed in this paper.It is shown that most studies focused on the development of the environment-friendly refrigerant and the system efficiency.The recent development on high-temperature heat pump system and centrifugal heat pump units are introduced.Based on the application in industry,it can be concluded that: the high-temperature heat pump technology can be widely used in oil heating,chemical engineering,sewage heat recovery,sea water desalination and drying,and has good effect in energy saving.Besides,the development direction and trend of the high-temperature heat pump is also discussed in this paper.
