Export,Bias of Technological Change and Wage Inequality in China

Abstract:This paper seeks to identify the causal effect of export on wage inequality.We firstly decompose the changes of the wage inequality in China's industrial sector during the period of 2002-2007,and then introduce the impact of export into the decomposition framework.The main finding is that changes in wage inequality in industrial sector are mainly caused by technological progress within sectors.Increase in the export intensity would cause a relatively more skill-biased technological progress,and then an upward change in the wage inequality.We establish an econometric model and estimate it to test the main decomposition findings with industrial level data.Our estimation results suggest that export intensity is significantly positively related with wage inequality,which is not the result of reverse causality.During the sample period,changes in export intensity account for 17.32%~22.51% of the changes in wage inequality in industrial sector.On the whole,the skill-bias of technological change can actually explain 51.13% of the change in wage inequality.Based on the empirical analysis,this paper suggests that government should focus on improving the technical level of export,and should also create conditions for strengthening the "learning by doing" effect of export behavior.
