Abstract:The preparation and subsequent Diels–Alder addition reactions of chiral 9-functionalised anthracene derivatives have been investigated. 9-(1-Methoxyethyl)anthracene undergoes highly diastereoselective (>95 ∶ 5) thermal and photoinduced Diels–Alder additions with maleic anhydride and N-methylmaleimide. The corresponding reactions of 1-anthracen-9-ylethanol occur with the reverse sense of selectivity for additions with maleic anhydride with a corresponding increase in the reaction rate. The origins of this selectivity have been proposed to lie in hydrogen-bonding effects. The stereochemical outcome of the Diels–Alder additions has been determined from single X-ray crystallography of adducts 5 and 7. Solvent effects on the diastereoselectivity of these reactions have also been observed.

Abstract:Theoretical studies on anthracene and a series of its derivatives were performed using the AM I method and DFT. Based on B3LYP/6-31G(d) optimized geometries, the electronic, IR and NMR spectra of anthracene oligomers were calculated,using the Indo/Cis, AM1 and B3LYP/6-31G(d) methods, respectively. The energy gaps of the oligomers decreased and the main absorptions in the electronic spectra of the oligomers were red-shifted, whereas the IR frequencies for some of the C=C and C-H bonds were blue-shifted with increasing chain length and in the presence of substituents. The C-13-NMR chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms were upfield shifted in the presence of an electron-donating group, while the chemical shifts of the carbon atoms on the two side rings of the anthracene moiety shifted downfield in the presence of an electron-withdrawing group.

Abstract:The synthesis of 9-(4-benzyloxazolin-2-yl)anthracene is described employing a new approach for the cyclisation of β-hydroxy amides to oxazolines. Thermal Diels–Alder reactions with N-methyl maleimide were found to be considerably slower than those previously observed. Essentially no diastereoselectivity was observed in these reactions as the benzyl stereodirecting group is remote from the reactive site. Minor rate enhancements were noticeable in the presence of some added Lewis acids, but with no diastereoselection.

Abstract:A number of 9-[(arylmethoxy)methyl]anthracenes were prepared and their photoreactivity was studied. The intramolecuar [4 pi+4 pi]cycloaddition competes with the intermolecular head-to-tail [4 pi+4 pi] cyclodimerization. The aryl substituents control the selectivity; concentration only plays a role in selectivity in certain cases. The complete reversibility of the cycloaddition makes this process suitable as a molecular switch, provided that traces of acids are avoided; when acid is present the cyclomers pursue an irreversible enol ether cleavage route.

Abstract:The anthracenes 3a–c, substituted in the 9-position with 3,5-dialkoxybenzyloxymethyl groups exhibit, in diluted solutions, intramolecular [4π+4π] photocycloaddition reactions to the polycyclic compounds 4a–c. The quantitative processes are completely reversible by heating, unless acid-catalyzed cleavages lead to thermally stable mono- and diketones: 4a–c→5a–c→6.

Abstract:Benzoquinone and 9-phenylanthracene barely undergo anticipated cycloaddition under acid catalysis. Instead, 9-anthracenyl aryl ethers are obtained as unexpected products. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction likely undergoes an ionic mechanism between protonated anthracene species and nucleophilic oxygen of 1,4-benzoquinone or 1,4-hydroquinone. A variety of 9-anthracenyl aryl ethers are constructed with this method. Produced anthracenyl aryl ethers are potential scaffolds for new fluorescent molecules.

Abstract:We investigated how the introduction of substituent at the 9‐ or 10‐position of the 1,8‐dichloroanthracene framework affects the horizontal and vertical distortions of the anthracene rings. The 9‐substituted anthracenes showed higher distortions than their 10‐substituted counterparts due to the steric repulsion with two chloro groups at the peri‐positions. The distortion of anthracene framework affected their reactivity. Indeed, 9‐substituted anthracenes exhibited higher reactivity to undergo the Diels–Alder reaction with maleic anhydride, which was a result of non‐electronic activation.

Abstract:Excellent regio- and diastereoselectivity were achieved in the microwave assisted Diels–Alder reaction between (S)-9-(1-methoxyethyl) anthracene and 2-cyclopenten-1-one. The addition of Grignard reagents to the ketone cycloadduct gave poor levels of diastereoselectivity, however, the reduction was significantly more stereoselective. Flash vacuum pyrolysis of the reduced material furnished the corresponding allylic alcohol in good yield and ee.

Abstract:Diels - Alder cycloadditions of p-benzoquinone with 9R-(1-methoxyethyl) anthracene provides a 60 : 40 ratio of cycloadducts when heated at reflux in xylene. Mechanistic studies to explore the origins of this selectivity have shown that at lower temperatures the kinetic product predominates, giving a 96 : 4 ratio of cycloadducts.

Abstract:Two approaches to the synthesis of chiral 9-amino anthracenes are described. The first, by nucleophilic addition of organolithium reagents to imines promoted by BF3·OEt2, unexpectedly provided stable aminoboranes as products. The second approach, using palladium catalysed cross coupling, was more successful for primary amines, and the key 9-(α-methylbenzylamino)anthracene subjected to cycloadditions with N-methyl maleimide and maleic anhydride. Excellent reactivity was achieved with good levels of diastereoselectivity, through a favourable combination of electrostatic and hydrogen bonding effects. Trial studies of the retro Diels–Alder reaction of these cycloadducts were also performed.

Abstract:Several 9-(2-aminoethyl)anthracene derivatives were prepared with different nitrogen substitutents including alkyl, acetamide, trifluoroacaeamide and t-butyl carbamate. The selectivity in Diels-Alder cyclodaddition reaction with N-methyl maleimide was evaluated through single crystal X-ray analysis of the products. Models for the change in selectivity with hydrogen bond acceptor are proposed, supported by DFT level calculations.

Abstract:We investigated the Diels‐Alder reaction of 6,13‐bis(triisopropylsilyl)pentacene (1) with small dienophiles such as (bridged) dihydronaphthalenes/cyclohexenes that yielded adducts at the central ring, the other dienophiles predominantly or exclusively attacked the unsubstituted off‐center ring. The difference in regioselectivity was investigated by DFT calculations. Apart from dispersion interactions, it is due to the steric demand of the dienophiles, which need to fit in between the silylethynyl substituents to react at the central ring. Epoxynaphthalene adducts of 1 as well as its anthracene and tetracene congeners were deoxygenated, easily furnishing triarenobarrelenes with TIPS‐ethynyl substituents at the bridge heads, attractive building blocks for porous solids and higher acene‐based trimers.

Abstract:Unusual regio- and stereo-selectivity in Diels-Alder (D-A) reactions were achieved between bulky N-phenylmaleimides and anthracene derivatives. Using multiple substituents with steric hindrance on both diene and dienophile, a noticeable shift toward 1,4-addition was successfully obtained. The substrate scope in this reaction was broad and the highest yield of anti-1,4-adducts was over 90%. Novel structures of anti-1,4-adducts were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. This study not only provides the first reported method of synthesizing anti-1,4-adducts and achieving otherwise unattainable regio-and stereo-selectivity, but also elucidates the importance of combining the steric effects of two reactants to shift products toward 1,4-adducts. Moreover, the resulting 1,4-adducts could be further functionalized through their halogen groups via carbon-carbon coupling reactions.

Abstract:Thermal Diels-Alder reactions of chiral 9-methoxyethyl and 9-hydroxyethyl anthracene have been investigated both experimentally and computationally with a range of N-substituted maleimides. Whereas cycloadditions with 9-methoxyethyl anthracene proceeded with almost complete diastereselectivity, those with 1-anthracenc-9-yl-ethanol resulted in essentially no diastereoselectivity. Subsequent regio- and stereoselective transformations with reducing agents and carbon nucleophiles demonstrated the synthetic utility of this methodology, which was applied to the enantioselective synthesis of pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines and an attempted synthesis of the alkaloid crispine A. Computational studies supported the proposed hypotheses for the stereoselectivity observed in the transformations described.

Abstract:Anthracene derivatives are an interesting class of compounds and modifications in the anthracene ring, producing different compounds with different properties. Structural analysis of anthracene derivatives with modifications in position 9,10 of the aromatic ring is necessary in order to obtain information about its properties. The introduction of groups with polar substituents increases the possibility to modify the molecule lipophilicity, corroborating its use as bioimaging probes. Anthracene derivatives are used in many biochemical applications. These compounds can react with molecular singlet oxygen [O2 (1Δg)], a reactive oxygen species, through the Diels–Alder reaction [4 + 2] to form the respective endoperoxide and to be used as a chemical trap in biological systems. Thus, the structural and crystalline characterizations of two anthracene derivatives are presented in this work to obtain information about their physical-chemical properties. The compounds were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses and scanning electron microscopy. The molecular structures of the compounds were studied by the Density Functional Theory, M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory in the gas phase. From the results obtained for the frontier molecular orbitals, HOMO and LUMO, and from the Molecular Electrostatic Potential map, it was possible to predict the chemical properties of both compounds. The supramolecular arrangements were also theoretically studied, whose molecules were kept fixed in their crystallographic positions, through the natural bonding orbitals analysis to check the stability of interactions and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules to verify the type of intermolecular interaction between their molecules, as well as how they occur.
