Abstract:We investigated the Diels‐Alder reaction of 6,13‐bis(triisopropylsilyl)pentacene (1) with small dienophiles such as (bridged) dihydronaphthalenes/cyclohexenes that yielded adducts at the central ring, the other dienophiles predominantly or exclusively attacked the unsubstituted off‐center ring. The difference in regioselectivity was investigated by DFT calculations. Apart from dispersion interactions, it is due to the steric demand of the dienophiles, which need to fit in between the silylethynyl substituents to react at the central ring. Epoxynaphthalene adducts of 1 as well as its anthracene and tetracene congeners were deoxygenated, easily furnishing triarenobarrelenes with TIPS‐ethynyl substituents at the bridge heads, attractive building blocks for porous solids and higher acene‐based trimers.

Electronic structures and spectra of conducting anthracene derivatives

Abstract:Theoretical studies on anthracene and a series of its derivatives were performed using the AM I method and DFT. Based on B3LYP/6-31G(d) optimized geometries, the electronic, IR and NMR spectra of anthracene oligomers were calculated,using the Indo/Cis, AM1 and B3LYP/6-31G(d) methods, respectively. The energy gaps of the oligomers decreased and the main absorptions in the electronic spectra of the oligomers were red-shifted, whereas the IR frequencies for some of the C=C and C-H bonds were blue-shifted with increasing chain length and in the presence of substituents. The C-13-NMR chemical shifts of the bridged carbon atoms were upfield shifted in the presence of an electron-donating group, while the chemical shifts of the carbon atoms on the two side rings of the anthracene moiety shifted downfield in the presence of an electron-withdrawing group.

Abstract:We investigated how the introduction of substituent at the 9‐ or 10‐position of the 1,8‐dichloroanthracene framework affects the horizontal and vertical distortions of the anthracene rings. The 9‐substituted anthracenes showed higher distortions than their 10‐substituted counterparts due to the steric repulsion with two chloro groups at the peri‐positions. The distortion of anthracene framework affected their reactivity. Indeed, 9‐substituted anthracenes exhibited higher reactivity to undergo the Diels–Alder reaction with maleic anhydride, which was a result of non‐electronic activation.

Abstract:Unusual regio- and stereo-selectivity in Diels-Alder (D-A) reactions were achieved between bulky N-phenylmaleimides and anthracene derivatives. Using multiple substituents with steric hindrance on both diene and dienophile, a noticeable shift toward 1,4-addition was successfully obtained. The substrate scope in this reaction was broad and the highest yield of anti-1,4-adducts was over 90%. Novel structures of anti-1,4-adducts were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. This study not only provides the first reported method of synthesizing anti-1,4-adducts and achieving otherwise unattainable regio-and stereo-selectivity, but also elucidates the importance of combining the steric effects of two reactants to shift products toward 1,4-adducts. Moreover, the resulting 1,4-adducts could be further functionalized through their halogen groups via carbon-carbon coupling reactions.

Abstract:To study the intramolecular Diels-Alder cycloadditon of 2H-chromen-2-one as a diene, a series of chiral N-allyl-N-benzylamides that contain a 2H-chromen-2-one moiety were designed for the synthesis of benzo[f]isoindol-1-ones via an intramolecular Diels-Alder and a subsequent retro-Diels-Alder cycloaddition with the expulsion of CO2. Both the yield (80%-89%) and absolute stereocontrol of the tandem reaction were high when an electron-withdrawing group was attached to the dienophile. The double bond in the styrene substructure remained in the products could be further derivatized by dihydroxylation. Abstract:Benzoquinone and 9-phenylanthracene barely undergo anticipated cycloaddition under acid catalysis. Instead, 9-anthracenyl aryl ethers are obtained as unexpected products. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction likely undergoes an ionic mechanism between protonated anthracene species and nucleophilic oxygen of 1,4-benzoquinone or 1,4-hydroquinone. A variety of 9-anthracenyl aryl ethers are constructed with this method. Produced anthracenyl aryl ethers are potential scaffolds for new fluorescent molecules.

In most cases, the cyclic adducts of 1-bromocyclohex-3-enecarboxylates 3 were formed in high yields with good regio- and stereoselectivity. Subsequent E2-elimination by treatment with DBU provided the corresponding 1,3- or 1,4-cyclohexadienecarboxylates depending on the relative configuration of the products. Starting from myrcene (7-methyl-3-methyleneocta-1,6-diene) the reaction sequence afforded the ester precursor of Georgywood with good yields.

Abstract:Herein we report on the acceleration of the Diels‐Alder reaction between a series of 9‐functionalized anthracenes and C60/C70 encapsulated in a water‐soluble metallo‐organic Pd(II)‐subphthalocyanine cage (SubPc‐cage), which performs as a catalytic molecular reactor that provides a beneficial hydrophobic environment. Negatively and positively charged anthracenes do not react either with C60 or C70, due to a favored solvation in water medium and/or to detrimental interactions with positively‐charged Pd(II) corners of SubPc‐cage. Experiments with C60 and C70 rendered parallel results, although C70 proved more reactive, leading to anthracene cycloadducts by reaction in the α bonds. All the results have been rationalized by theoretical calculations at the GFN2‐xTB level.

Abstract:The Diels-Alder reactions of the cycloalkenes, cyclohexene through cyclopropene, with a series of dienes-1,3-dimethoxybutadiene. cyclopentadiene, 3,6-dimethyltetrazine, and 3,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)-tetrazine-were studied with quantum mechanical calculations and compared with experimental values when available. The reactivities of cycloalkenes as dienophiles were found by a distortion/interaction analysis to be distortion controlled. The energies required for c-ycloalkenes to be distorted into the Diels-Alder transition states increase as the ring size of cycloalkenes increases from c-yclopropene to cyclohexene, resulting in an increase in activation barriers. The reactivities of the dienes are controlled by both distortion and interaction energies. In normal Diels-Alder reactions with cycloalkenes, the electron-rich 1,3-dimethoxybutadiene exhibits stronger interaction energies than cyclopentadiene, but the high distortion energies required for 1,3-dimethoxybutadiene to achieve transition-state geometries overtake the favorable interaction, resulting in higher activation barriers. In inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder reactions of 3,6-dimethyltetrazine and 3,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)tetrazine, the reactivities are mainly controlled by interaction energies.

Abstract:A sequential Diels-Alder reaction/rearrangement sequence was developed for the synthesis of diverse functionalized bicyclo[2.2.1]heptanes as novel floral and woody odorants. The outcome of the rearrangement depended on the substitution pattern of the dienes. 2D NMR analysis has established the correct relative configuration of the bicyclo[2.2.1]heptanone, which was originally misassigned. Furthermore, when the initiating DA reaction was catalyzed by a chiral Lewis acid, the bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane derivatives including (+)-herbanone can be obtained in an enantiomeric ratio (er) up to 96.5:3.5.
