An Empirical Study on the Changes of Rural Women's Social Status During Rural Industrialization

Abstract:It is certain that the changes of economic an d social structure will induce the changes of rural women's social status during rural industrialization. Being impacted by informal institutional factors such as tradition, custom, and social culture, the changes of rural women's social st atus are not quite synchronized with the development of rural industrialization. Factor analyses by statistical data of thirty-one provinces and municipalities have proved that the changes of rural women's social status are the result of d ifferent factors acting together, such as economic factor, social factor, cultur al factor and other special factors in rural industrialization, in which the res ultant force of different factors determines the direction of the changes of rur al women's social status, namely, it presents the same direction as the developm ent of rural industrialization. Whereas, the variances of the force and directio n of different factors influence the particular path of the changes of rural wom en's social status, that is, the development of the different index variables of the rural women's social status shows imbalance. Meanwhile, according to the cluster analysis of the production value structure a nd employment structure of rural industrialization, the thirty-one provinces an d municipalities can be divided into four clusters on the whole, each representi ng the different development level and phase of rural industrialization, and sho w the developing track of rural industrialization from a historical point of vie w. Accordingly, there is a large difference among the means of the index variabl es of rural women's social status in inhomogeneous areas with different levels o f rural industrialization. It not only embodies the characteristics of rural wom en's social status of different areas with different levels of rural industriali zation and the influence of rural industrialization on the changes of rural wome n's social status, but also represents the traces and laws of the changes of rur al women's social status, while reflecting the relative independence and the tim e lag of the changes of rural women's social status.

Abstract:This study explored the reason why the development of the Wenzhou economy, which is known as the “Wenzhou Model”, has slowed down. Traditional research emphasized the effects of limitations from soft and hard environments, such as environment, resources, and capital. Built on acknowledging the factors mentioned above, the current study especially proved that there was limited development space for certain early-entered industries, that is, it became unrealistic for accelerating the development of certain industries after the industrial clusters in this area have occupied the most market share in China, even the whole world, which becomes the crux point to lead to the lag of the development of Wenzhou economy. The study first established a theoretical model for illustrating ideas delivered here and then proved the basic ideas in the model through analyzing materials and data collected through survey among Wenzhou industrial clusters. The conclusion subsequently followed.

Abstract:This paper explores the context of different models of de-industrialization and industrialization, which connected to social structural change, by going through existing narratives, whether Marxist or functionalist, derived largely from the complex historical experiences of Western Europe, especially Britain, which is seated in our historical consciousness as a lens to examine various narratives of different geographical location in different set of time to set universal postulates. On closer examination of the Indian economy, this essay sets out shared assumptions, common to Marxism and functionalism with new recent research about the character of economic development as a social process, by unfurling the dynamism and complexities of socio-economic nature of the Indian economy, which offers some alternative perspective.

Abstract:This paper attempts to explain why China performed better than India in reducing poverty. As two of the most populous countries in the world, China and India have both experienced fast economic growth and high inequality in the past four decades. Conversely, China adopted a more export-oriented development strategy, resulting in faster industrialization or urbanization and deeper globalization, than India. Consequently, to conduct the comparative study, we first decompose poverty changes into a growth and an inequality components, assessing the relative importance of growth versus distributional changes on poverty in China and India. Then, Chinese data are used to estimate the impacts of industrialization, urbanization and globalization on poverty reduction in rural China. The major conclusion of this comparative study is that developing countries must prioritize employment generation in secondary and tertiary industries through industrialization and globalization in order to absorb surplus agricultural labor, helping reduce poverty in the rural areas.

Abstract:This paper studied the impact the industrial structure change made on the urbanization under the opening economy. And by using the impulse response function of VAR model and variance decomposition, it also tested and verified the dynamic relation between the two aspects based on the 2 nations' data of 1978- 2011. The results show that different opening strategies lead to different industrial structures, and China's urbanization benefits from the industry- oriented structures while Indian relies on the service- oriented structure, the former of which has obvious advantage. Therefore, for backward developing countries, industrialization is the only way to promote urbanization, while the development of high- tech services based on industrialization is the important guarantee to better the quality of urbanization; and the quality upgrading of rural labor helps to accelerate industrial restructuring and improve the level of urbanization.

Abstract:Urbanization and the Hi-Tech industry development are two wheels which drive the development of urban economy. On one hand, urbanization can accelerate the accumulation of factors, such as capital, labor and information, so that provide the appropriate basis and environments for Hi-Tech industries development. On the other hand, Hi-Tech industry development also pushes the process of urbanization and leads to more efficient allocation of urban resources. In this paper, we argue that urbanization and Hi-Tech industry development are closely related and affected by each other. On the basis of reviewing the previous theories and studies, this paper focuses on the interaction mechanism between the Urbanization and Hi-Tech industry development. Taking Hangzhou's development as a good example, the paper also demonstrates some empirical findings and gives some valuable policy suggestions.

Abstract:Along with rapid urbanization, suburban manufacturing development is one of the most prevalent phenomena in contemporary cities around the developing world. However, there are limited quantitative studies on the restructuring of intra-urban manufacturing landscape in the context of developing countries. Based on the theoretical perceptions of neoliberalism and the debate between neoliberal theory and dirigisme theory, this study develops an interpretive framework of industrial land development combining state force and market force under transitional economies. This context-specific framework is used in a case study to investigate the determinants of industrial suburbanization in Hangzhou, China, and thus to disclose the definite roles played by local governments and market forces. The historical analysis indicates that the manufacturing spatial restructure is characterized by a big decline of industrial land in central city, as well as emerging industrial clusters in suburban areas. We also find that both governmental policies and marketization have significantly shaped the restructuring of manufacturing landscape. Proactive planning policies, development zone fevers, and controlled land prices are the most important policies influencing manufacturing locational decision.

Abstract:Colonial trade encouraged the colonies to specialise in primary products. Did this prevent in-dustrialisation in the colonies? And did lack of industrialisation, in turn, help to keep the colonies under control? To answer these questions, we examine the impact of the temporary collapse in trade between Britain and India due to World War I, on industrialisation and anti-imperial feelings in India. Exploiting cross-district variation in exposure to the trade shock stemming from initial differences in industrial specialisation, we find that districts more exposed to the trade shock experienced substantially faster industrial growth in 1911-21, placing them on a higher level of industrialisation which has persisted up to today. Using the World War I trade shock as an instrument for industrialisation levels, we also find that more industrialised districts were more likely to express anti-imperial feelings in 1922, and to vote for the Indian National Congress in the landmark election of 1937. These results suggest that colonial trade may have played an important role in preventing colonial industrialisation, and in embedding foreign rule.

Abstract:This paper analyzes China’s industrialization during the entire 1990s by looking at the ratio of manufactory industry to GDP, which is an indicator to the development of China’s industrialization. It is found that China’s industrialization has actually suffered stagnation since the middle of 1990s. Obviously,the introduction of foreign funds has two effects, which in turn influence China’s industrialization. One is the substitution effect of foreign funds induction. The other is the weak substitution effect. They have a materially impact on China’s industrialization.

Abstract:It is difficult to change the national economic status for developing economies,especially for some giant economy like China,if the sustained rapid growth has not been followed with corresponding transformation of economic structure.Through analyzing the evolution of structure height in the process of economic growth since the reform and opening-up,we find that China has entered into the accelerating development stage at which industrial structure highly evolved.China has completed two-thirds of the industrialization process by the end of the year 2010.Despite some time lag,the economic growth and the height evolution of industrial structure basically tally with each other.

Abstract:In “The Industrial Structure of Production: An Outline of a Research Program,” Ronald Coase and Ning Wang (2001) made a plea for a new economic research program that can go beyond the Arrow-Debreu framework and explain China's miraculous rise. They point out that the greatest trouble with the Arrow-Debreu framework lies in its inability to explain production. In this article I will push this insight further to shed new light on why and how production, or mass production in particular, emerged and mushroomed in the 18th–19th century England, the 19th–20th century United States, and 20th-21st century China but not in other parts of the world with similar geo-developmental conditions such as the Netherlands, Mexico, or India. My central thesis is that production or firms emerge in response to market demand, yet the so-called “market” is itself a fundamental public good that must be created by a development state instead of the “invisible hand.” Therefore, the lack of industrialization in any nation seems on the surface due to the lack of mass supply, but is in fact due to the lack of a mass market, which in turn is due to the lack of powerful and strong-willed market creators.

Abstract:Over the period 1978–2016, more than 550 million migrants moved to China’s cities, resulting in a large rise of urbanization from 18 to 57%. While urbanization is influenced by many factors, this study focuses on industrialization, a key structural determinant of urban development. How does industrial development affect China’s urbanization? Does China’s industrialization lead to its urbanization? Is China under- or over-urbanized? How does China manage urban development so that the virtuous circle between urbanization and industrialization could realize? This chapter offers explanations to the questions as follows: China’s rapid industrialization is the key driver of its urbanization; China’s urban development is at the right speed, avoiding many problems of over-urbanization in developing countries; and China successfully guided urbanization to promote economic growth through agglomeration and consumption effects.
