Abstract:In this article, dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) and gas chromatography–electron capture detection (GC–ECD) were presented for the extraction and determination of five polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil samples. Acetone was used as extraction solvent for the extraction of PCBs from soil samples. In DLLME, the target analytes in the extraction solvent were rapidly transferred from the acetone extract to chlorobenzene when the extraction process began. The main advantages of this method are quick speed, high enrichment factor, high recovery and good repeatability. Under the optimum conditions, the method yields a linear calibration curve in the concentration range from 2 to 2000μgkg−1for PCB 52, and 0.4 to 400μgkg−1 for other target analytes. Coefficients of correlation (r2) ranged from 0.9993 to 0.9999. The repeatability was tested by spiking soil samples at a concentration level of 10μgkg−1 for PCBs. The relative standard deviations (RSDs, n=11) varied between 2.2% and 6.4%. The limits of detection (LODs), based on signal-to-noise (S/N) of 3, were between 0.20 and 0.50μgkg−1. The relative recoveries of the five PCBs from soil S1, S2 and S3 at spiking levels of 10, 20 and 50μgkg−1 were in the range of 88.70–103.8%, 82.50–106.3% and 82.30–113.6%, respectively. Therefore, DLLME combined with GC–ECD can be successfully applied for the determination of trace PCB residues in real soil samples.

Abstract:A study was conducted to determine the adsorption/desorption of butachlor, myclobutanil and chlorpyrifos on five soils using a batch equilibration technique and to study the relationship between bioavailability to Allolobophora caliginosa and the adsorption/desorption of these three pesticides. The results showed that the adsorption/desorption processes of the tested compounds were mainly controlled by soil organic matter content (OM) and octanol/water-partitioning coefficient (Kow), and that the bioavailability of the pesticides was dependent on characteristics of pesticides, properties of soils, and uptake routes of earthworms. Bioconcentration of butachlor and myclobutanil was negatively correlated with Freundlich adsorption constant Kaf and Kdf. However, only a slightly positive correlation between bioconcentration and Kaf and Kdf was observed for chlorpyrifos due to its high affinity onto soil.

Abstract:The adsorption of six PCB congeners to natural sediments from the Yangtse River was investigated. Experiments were conducted at different PCB concentrations to get the adsorption isotherm for each compound. Analytical determinations were carried out using gas chromato‐graphy with ECD detector. Results showed that the adsorption mechanism of PCBs on Yangtse River sediment fitted the best to the Langmuir adsorption model. It was also found that the adsorption rate decreased as the solubility increased or the octanol‐water partition coefficient decreased for each compound.

Abstract:Polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs)are a group of persistent organic pollutants(POPs) with properties of lipophilicity,low water-solubility,high stability and bioaccumulation.The environmental process of PCBs occurred in the sediment,which is an important geological sink for the hydrophobic organic pollutants(HOCs),is the hot subject associated with the POPs research.This study has comprehensively reviewed the research progresses on the analysis,migration and transformation of PCBs in sediments,introduced some new achievements of the research on the migration and transformation of PCBs in sediments.Finally,this study has proposed some own points for the research on the Bioremediation of PCBs in future.

Abstract:Characteristics of the adsorption of ortho?substituted non?planar 2-chlorobiphenyl ( 2-CB) and non?ortho?sub?stituted co?planar 4-chlorobiphenyl ( 4-CB) on three major simulated sorptive soil components: K+ saturated montmoril?lonite( K+?Mont) , humic acid?clay mineral complexes( HA?Mont) and biochar( BC) were studied through batch equilibra?tion experiments. Results show that the linear eqatio could be used to fit the adsorption isotherms of PCBs on all the three absorbents with the adsorption coefficient Kw being in the order of BC>HA?Mont>K+?Mont. Thermodynamic analysis of the adsorption isotherms as a function of temperature indicated that both surface adsorption and hydrophobic effect were the driving forces of the PCBs sorption on K+?Mont, while partition was the major one of the PCBs sorption on HA?Mont, for the interlayer spaces of montmorillonite are the major adsorption area, and the aromatic nanoporous surface of BC and theπ?π effect between PCB molecules were the major driving forces, for the surface was the major adsorption area of BC. The sorption of 4-CB was higher than that of 2-CB on all the three absorbents despite that 2-CB and 4-CB are similar in hy?drophobicity, which suggests that steric effect of the non?planar structure prevents 2-CB from accessing nano sized inter?layer spaces of montmorillonite or nanopores on the surface of BC. All the findings in this study indicate that the three di?mensional structures of organic pollutant molecules play an important role in their sorption and translocation in the soil.
Residual polychlorinated biphenyls characteristics analysis of different soil types

Abstract:In order to understand the environment distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil, Chinese gridded industrial pollutants emission and residue model (ChnGIPERM) was developed based on ChnGPERM (Chinese gridded pesticide emission and residue model), which has been used to study environmental behavior of PCBs in soil. Characteristics of PCBs in different types of soil, including urban soil, dry soil, paddy, grass, forest and uncultivated soil, contaminated by emissions of a single PCB source were investigated. The results showed that, the residue concentration of PCBs in soil depends on contents of air and water in soil, as well as the physic-chemical properties of PCBs, the correlation between quality fractions and contents of water in soil was pretty high (R=-0.9995, P<0.0001). With the increasing soil depth, the residue concentrations decrease with higher chlorine content in PCBs. Because of the higher water solubility, PCBs that contains less chlorine enters soil more easily, and their vertical distributions in soil change fast with time, while PCBs containing more chlorine have weaker abilities to diffuse in soil, and their vertical distributions in soil are quite stable with time.

Abstract:Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are typical representative of chlorinated organic pollutants. Given the toxicity of PCBs, there is an urgent need to select an appropriate indicator to monitor their biological effects on soil ecosystems. For this purpose, we investigated the impacts of PCBs on soil protein and the potential of using protein as a biological indicator to assess soil contamination due to PCBs. This study demonstrated that soil protein concentration and expression were negatively affected by PCBs. In addition, significantly (P<0.01) negative correlation was observed between protein concentration and PCBs. Subsequently, protein size distribution separated by SDS-PAGE revealed that with the increase in PCBs concentration there are less large molecular weight proteins and more low molecular weight proteins (<40 kD). Consequently, soil protein level has the potential to be an indicator of soil contamination, and these low molecular weight proteins have significant meaning for getting insight into the ecological effects of PCBs on the soil environment.
Adsorption and desorption of polychlorinated biphenyls on biochar colloids with different pyrolysis temperatures: the effect of solution chemistry

Abstract:Biochar releases colloidal particles into the environment during applications and aging which can become carriers of pollutants and influence on the environmental risk of pollutants due to the excellent adsorption and migration properties of biochar colloids (BCCs). The adsorption and desorption behaviors of BCCs can be different from their bulk ones due to the colloidal size, which merits specific studies. Herein, the adsorption and desorption of 2,4,4'-trichlorobiphenyl (PCB28) as a representative on BCCs released from bulk biochars prepared from bamboo chips at 300, 500, and 700 C and the effects of solution properties were specifically investigated. Results show that the adsorption was dominated by pore filling and π-π interaction, and thus, BCCs prepared at higher temperature with greater pore volume and aromaticity had higher adsorption of PCB28. Results show that the adsorption was dominated by pore filling and π-π interaction, and thus, BCCs prepared at higher temperature with greater pore volume and aromaticity had higher adsorption of PCB28. The saturation adsorption amounts of PCB28 on BCC300, BCC500, and BCC700 were 21.9, 40.3, and 62.4 mg/g, respectively. It is noteworthy that PCB28 possessed a significant desorption hysteresis from BCCs, with the hysteresis index (Ce = 80 μg/L) increased from 0.380 to 0.661 as the preparation temperature of BCCs rising from 300 to 700 ℃. High concentration of NaCl (100 mmol/L) was unfavorable for the adsorption and desorption. The presence of humic acid or fulvic acid (FA), especially the smaller FA, could inhibit the adsorption and desorption of PCB28 on BCCs due to micropore blocking. In seawater, groundwater, surface water, and soil solution samples, the PCB28 adsorption of BCCs was inhibited to varying degrees in comparison with that in deionized water, and the desorption was noticeably inhibited in the groundwater sample. These findings provide valuable information for the understanding of interactions between BCCs and organic contaminants in natural waters and for the environmental application of biochars as well.

Abstract:Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations were measured in a concurrent air and surface soil sampling program across China. Passive air samples were collected for approximately 3 months from mid-July to mid-October, 2005 using polyurethane foam (PUF) disk type samplers at 97 sites and surface soil samples were collected in a subset of 51 sites in the same year. As expected, the air concentrations (pg m(-3)) were highest at urban sites (mean of 350 +/- 218) followed by rural (230 +/- 180) and background sites (77 +/- 50). The PCB homologue composition was similar across China, with no distinction among site types, and reflected the profile of Chinese transformer oil with a greater proportion of lower molecular weight (LMW) congeners, particularly the tri-PCBs. This differs from the profile in Chinese soil that was shifted toward the higher molecular weight (HMW) congeners and likely attributed to numerous years of deposition and accumulation in this reservoir. The PCB profile in surface soil also reflects an "urban fractionation effect" with preferential deposition of HMW congeners near sources. The profile of PCBs in Chinese air was shown to be different than reported for Europe and for the Great Lakes Area (GLA) in North America. European and GLA air samples show a distinction between urban and rural/background sites, with urban sites dominated by tetra- and penta-PCBs, whereas rural and background sites are shifted toward LMW congeners. European and GLA samples also exhibit much higher PCB concentrations at urban sites. This may be attributed to the use of PCBs in building materials in European and North American cities. In China, the difference between urban and rural/background sites is less pronounced. Strong soil-air correlations were found for the LMW PCBs at the background and rural sites, and for the HMW PCBs at the urban sites, a strong evidence of the urban fractionation effect, To our knowledge, this is the first national-scale study in China investigating PCBs in both air and surface soil samples.

Abstract:Thermal desorption techniques, destined for removing organic pollutants from contaminated soil, are reviewed with some emphasis on the removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and other semi-volatiles. Treatment temperature and time are the two key factors determining removal efficiency (RE), which is also influenced by soil texture, total pressure, carrier gas composition and heating rate. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) are selected as the most typical as well as widespread representative of semi-volatile POPs. In the presence of oxygen, PCB is converted into PCDF, leading to a rise in total TEQ (toxic equivalency quantity) even in case total PCB is diminishing. Thermal desorption and contaminant destruction and removal efficiency can be promoted by adding additives. The main mechanism of contaminants removal is desorption/evaporation, presumably accompanied by soil-catalysed dechlorination and decomposition. Thus, the soil treated is purified, yet the remaining contaminants are partly transferred to the gas phase. Dust extraction, condensation, and adsorption are frequently used to decrease the contaminant concentration in off-gas.

Abstract:Polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs), an important kind of toxic pollutant, are persistent in the environment and accumulative in many species. Ab initio calculations have been performed for all 209 PCB congeners at the HF/6-31G * level. Electrostatic potentials and subsequently derived statistically-based structural descriptors have been obtained. Linear relationships between aqueous solubility (1gS(W)), n-octanol/water partition coefficient (1g K-OW), n-octanol /air partition coefficient (1g K-OA), soil sorption (1g K-OC), aqueous activity coefficient(1g Y-W), 298 K supercooled liquid vapour pressures (1g P-L), total molecular surface area (TSA), gas-chromatographic relative retention time (RRT), enthalpy of sublimation (Delta H-subl) enthalpy of vaporization (Delta H-vap), enthalpy of fusion (Delta H-fus), Aryl hydrocarbon receptor biding affinity (pEC(50)), biodegradability (Biodeg%) and Microbial elimination rate constant( -1g k) of PCBs and theoretical descriptors have been established by multiple regression method. It appears that the quantities derived from electrostatic potentials, V-min, V-s, min, V-s, max, V-s, II, sigma(2)(tot), Sigma V-s(+), Sigma V-s(-), together with the molecular surface area and some popular quantum chemical descriptors (e. g. E-HOMO and E-LUMO) can be well used to express the quantitative structure-property (activity) relationships of PCBs. Although the correlation equations for some physicochemical. properties and biological activities are not superior to those previously established with other types of structural parameters, the parameter set used in the present systematic quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR)/quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study was proven to have more general applicability.

Abstract:A methodology for preparing the reference material of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil is described. The soil sample collected from a polluted area in east of China was dried, grou fid, homogenized, packed and tested on stability and homogeneity. The materials were analyzed by isotope-dilution mass spectrometry. And then the analysis results were validated by four laboratories. The contents of six indicator congeners (C1328, CB52, CB101, CB138, CB153 and CB180) and eight dioxin-like congeners ( CB77, CB81, CB105, CB114, CB118, CB156, CB157, CB167) were certified for this material. The material was intended for use in the method validation and quality control for congener-specific of PCBs in soil or sediments.

Abstract:Sorption of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to sediment is a key process in determining their mobility, bioavailability, and chemical decomposition in aquatic environments. In order to examine the validity of currently used interpretation approaches for PCBs sorption, comparative results on 2-chlorobiphenyl sorption to carbonaceous components in sediments (activated carbon, carbon black, coal, soot, graphite, flyash, wood) were macroscopically correlated with the structural, morphological, crystallographic, and compositional properties of the carbonaceous components. Since the Freundlich sorption constant, K(F) (Lkg(-1)) spanned several orders of magnitude, ranging from logK(F) of 6.13-5.27 for activated carbon, 5.04 for carbon black, 3.83 for coal to 3.08 for wood, organic carbon partitioning approach should be more specifically categorized, considering the various forms, nature and origins of organic carbon in sediment. Sorption rate constants and fraction parameters, which were numerically defined from empirical kinetic model with fast and slow sorption fractions, were closely related to the physicochemical properties of the carbonaceous components. Sorption interpretation approaches with a specific property and viewpoint, such as organic carbon partitioning, soot carbon distribution, or surface area correlation, did not properly explain the overall results on sorption capacity, fast and slow sorption kinetics, and partitioning coefficient. It is also important to emphasize the heterogeneous nature of sediment and the difficulties of encompassing the partitioning among its carbonaceous components.
Preliminary Study on Desorption Procedures of Typical PBDE from Natural Soils

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs)are commonly used as the flame retardants in electronic industry and widely distributed in multi-media environments.In order to understand the transport and fate characteristics of BDE47,as a model compound,the desorption behaviors of BDE47 on 5 natural soil samples with different organic carbon contents were investigated by batch experiments with varied concentrations of BDE47 from 1 μg·kg-1 to 10 μg·kg-1 after a 30-d aging time,and the desorption isotherms were fitted by the nonlinear Freundlich equation and linear model,respectively.The kinetic procedure of desorption was studied using a soil sample pretreated at 5 μg·kg-1 of BDE47.The experimental data were calibrated to subtract the influence of vessel wall sorption.The analytical results indicated that desorption kinetics of BDE47 from soil could be classified into an initial fast desorption and a subsequent slow desorption.The linear behavior was dominant at the initial stage;however,nonlinear characteristics gradually enhanced with the extension of desorption procedure.Dissolved organic matter released from soil organic carbon was one of the major factors influencing desorption properties of the soil samples.

Abstract:The present study investigated the environmental distribution and fate of low molecular weight (LMW) polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in China using the ChnGIPERM (Chinese Gridded Industrial Pollutants Emission and Residue Model), in which the air-soil exchange, spatial-temporal variations and the heterogeneity of secondary emission and residue in the non-source areas were studied. The model simulated the temporal and spatial variations of the PCB28 concentration in soils and air which agreed well with historical monitoring data across China. The long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) and temperature was identified as the major factor affecting the distribution patterns of the secondary emissions and residues. Soil residue was considered as important environmental fate of PCB28. However, the intensity of an emissions source and the distance with non-source area strongly affected the spatial and temporal variations of PCB28 residues in soil. Several factors strongly impacted the distribution characteristics and air-soil exchange of PCB28, including emission patterns, atmospheric transport, soil organic carbon (SOC), soil vertical transfer, ambient temperature, and precipitation.

Abstract:Biochar plays an important role in the behaviors of organic pollutants in the soil environment. The role of humic acid (HA) and metal cations on the adsorption affinity of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to the biochars in an aqueous medium and an extracted solution from a PCBs-contaminated soil was studied using batch experiments. Biochars were produced with pine needles and wheat straw at 350 °C and 550 °C under anaerobic condition. The results showed that the biochars had high adsorption affinity for PCBs. Pine needle chars adsorbed less nonplanar PCBs than planar ones due to dispersive interactions and separation. Coexistence of HA and metal cations increased PCBs sorption on the biochars accounted for HA adsorption and cation complexation. The results will aid in a better understanding of biochar sorption mechanism of contaminants in the environment.

Abstract:<p>The adsorption-desorption performance of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), one of the environmentally persistent pollutants which is refractory to degrade in soil, was investigated and reported. The adsorption-desorption process of PFOA was firstly conducted using different fractions (sand, coarse silt and fine silt) of soil collected from Shanghai, China. More than 50% of PFOA (2.0 mg/L) could be adsorbed by soils while only less than 10% of which could be desorbed once contamination occurs. The kinetics and particle diffusion rates of PFOA in different fractions of soil were calculated and analyzed in detail. Apart from this, the retention of short-chained PFCs, which can be generated as degradation products of PFOA, were also measured. In single solute systems, the adsorption of pollutants in soils dramatically increased as the chain length of PFCs grew longer. Similarly, in mixed solutions, preferential adsorption of longer-chained PFCs over shorter chains in soils were sited, attributable to the stronger hydrophobicity of the pollutants. However, the desorption of them performed in reverse, where the desorption rates of longer-chained PFCs were far lower than those of shorter ones. Furthermore, influencing factors including pH, temperature and co-existing matters were studied during the adsorption process. After comprehending the adsorption behavior of PFOA in soil fractions, the situation of the adsorption of PFOA in various soils chosen from nine provinces in China was investigated and compared. There was an obvious discrepancy, whether it be from the rate or the amount of adsorption of PFOA (approximately 10%), in the nine different soils. Finally, a multiple linear regressive equation was employed to sort influencing parameters which are prone to affect the adsorption of PFOA in soils, the contribution of these are provided in order of relevance. These results demonstrate the adsorption performance and behavior of PFOA and PFCs in different soils, which can be utilized as a scientific reference for maximizing remediation of PFOA polluted sites in the future.</p>

Dynamic Changes of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (pcbs) Degradation and Adsorption to Biochar As Affected by Soil Organic Carbon Content.

Abstract:Biochar amendment constitutes an effective soil remediation strategy for organic contaminants, but how the soil organic carbon (SOC) content affects polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) degradation and adsorption to biochar remains unclear. A 120-day biochar amendment experiment was conducted to investigate the dynamic effects of SOC on PCBs degradation in soil and adsorption to biochar. Biochar in low-SOC (LSOC) soils adsorbed a significantly higher amount of PCBs than did that in high-SOC (HSOC) soils. PCBs degradation was also greatly enhanced in LSOC soils when compared with that in HSOC soils after 30 days of biochar amendment. Degradation of di- and tri-chlorobiphenyls (CBs) were significantly enhanced in the LSOC soils than in the HSOC soils, while the biochar in the LSOC soil tended to adsorb significantly higher amount of tetra- and penta-CBs. Compared to biochar adsorption, microbial degradation contributed significantly to soil PCBs removal. Soil bacterial 16S rDNA abundance increased concomitantly with soil PCBs degradation. Regardless of SOC, soil bacterial communities and PCB congener compositions changed significantly after 30 days of biochar amendment. The abundance of Actinobacteria and Firmicutes were negatively correlated with the soil PCBs removal, while Gemmatimonadetes and Proteobacteria were positively correlated. The results of this study revealed that, compared with that to HSOC soils, biochar amendment to LSOC soils may have a greater positive effect on both soil PCB degradation and biochar adsorption. Therefore, the application of bamboo biochar to LSOC soils could be more effective than that to HSOC soils with respect to the remediation of PCBs contamination.

Abstract:Lead (Pb) pollution is an increasing public concern. Understanding chemical and biochemical behavior of lead in soil is important for preventing and remediation of Pb contamination. This paper summarizes the mechanism of Pb adsorption and desorption in soils. Specific sorption and nonspecific sorption was recognized, and there are still different opinions about Pb2+ adsorption mechanisms such as hydrolyzed /unhydrolyzed adsorption and monodentate /bidentate reactions. The main factors affect Pb adsorption such as soil particle composition, organic matter, pH, temperature, and competitive cations are discussed. Finally some sorption isotherms are described.
