Abstract:The low temperature plasmas generated by different types of discharge under atmospheric pressure have been used to treat the wood surface.The contact angle of water solutions and the surface appearance of wood have been measured experimentally.The surface energy of wood after treatment has been obtained.The results show that the discharge plasma has significant effects on the surface structure and the mechanic characters of wood.The discharge under atmospheric pressure shows a way to improve the surface performance and the adhesive ability of wood.

Abstract:Wood-based materials are multifunctional green and environmentally friendly natural construction materials, and are widely used in decorative building materials. For this reason, a lot of research has been carried out to develop new and innovative wood surface improvements and make wood more appealing through features such as fire-retardancy, hydrophobicity, and antibacterial properties. To improve the performance of wood, more and more attention is being paid to the functioning of the surface. Understanding and mastering technology to improve the surface functionality of wood opens up new possibilities for developing multifunctional and high-performance materials. Examples of these techniques are ion crosslinking modification and coating modification. Researchers have been trying to make wooden surfaces more practical for the past century. This study has gradually gained popularity in the field of wood material science over the last 10 years. This paper provides an experimental reference for research on wood surface functionalization and summarizes the most current advancements in hydrophobic, antibacterial, and flame-retardant research on wood surfaces.

Abstract:<p>Plasma technology is an eco‐friendly way to modify or fabricate carbon‐based materials (CBMs) due to plasmas' distinctive abilities in tuning the surface physicochemical properties by implanting functional groups or incorporating heteroatoms into the surface without changing the bulk structure. However, the mechanisms of functional groups formation on the carbon surface are still not clearly explained because of the variety of different discharge conditions and the complexity of plasma chemistry. Consequently, this paper contains a comprehensive review of plasma‐treated carbon‐based materials and their applications in environmental, materials, and energy fields. Plasma‐treated CBMs used in these fields have been significantly enhanced in recent years because these related materials possess unique features after plasma treatment, such as higher adsorption capacity, enhanced wettability, improved electrocatalytic activity, etc. Meanwhile, this paper also summarizes possible reaction routes for the generation of functional groups on CBMs. The outlook for future research is summarized, with suggestions that plasma technology research and development shall attempt to achieve precise control of plasmas to synthesize or to modify CBMs at the atomic level.</p>

Surface Modification of Fabrics Using Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma for Improved Antifouling Performance

Abstract:Abstract Surface modification of fabrics is an effective way to endow them with antifouling properties while still maintain their key advantages like comfort, softness, and stretchability. Herein, an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma method is demonstrated for the processing of silk fabrics using 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDS) as the precursor. The results showed the successful grafting of PFDS groups on the surface of silk fabrics without causing damage. Meanwhile, the gas temperature is rather low during the whole processing procedure, suggesting the non-equilibrium characteristics of DBD plasma. The influence of processing parameters on fabrics was systematically investigated, like the PFDS concentration, plasma treatment time, and plasma discharge power. An optimum processing condition was determined to be PFDS concentration: 8 wt%, plasma processing time: 40 s, and plasma power: 11.87 W. However, with the prolonged plasma processing time or enhanced plasma power, the plasma-grafted PFDS films could be degraded. Further study revealed that plasma processing of silk fabrics with PFDS would lead to the change of their chemical composition and surface roughness. As a result, the surface energy of the fabrics was reduced, accompanied by the improved water and oil repellency properties as well as enhanced antifouling performance. Besides, the plasma-grafted PFDS films also had good durability and stability. By extending the fabrics to polyester and wool against different oil-/water-based stains, the DBD plasma surface modification technique demonstrated good versatility in improving the antifouling properties of fabrics. This work provides a guidance for the surface modification of fabrics using DBD plasma to confer them with desirable functionalities.

Abstract:Research progress in physical and chemical surface modification methods for fibers in biodegradable plastics/plant fiber composites was reviewed in this paper. The main physical methods included heat treatment, electrostatic discharge treatment and steam explosion. The main chemical methods included surface grafting, surfactant treatment, alkali treatment, esterification treatment, and coupling agent treatment. It was pointed out that the steam explosion and low temperature plasma treatment constituted the development trend in the future.

Abstract:This article simply introduces the properties and applications of several high performance organic fibers and describes studies on the surface modification of these fibers by using the low-temperature plasma technology.It's shown that plasma treatment well modifies the properties of fiber surface by physical etching and chemical modification.It can not only roughen the surface of the fibers,but also implant some active polar groups on the fiber surface,reducing the surface energy,both causing the enhancement of the adhesion between the fibers and the polymer matrix;Meanwhile,it is a simple process without any pollution,so it's an effective and environmentally friendly way to modify fiber surfaces,especially to the high performance organic fibers.

Abstract:The effect of argon (Ar) and oxygen (O2) gases as well as the treatment times on the properties of modified bamboo fibers using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma at generated power of 180 W were investigated. The plasma treatment of bamboo fibers with inert gases leads to the generation of ions and radicals on the fiber surface. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that the functional groups of lignin and hemicellulose were reduced owing to the removal of the amorphous portion of the fibers by plasma etching. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) results in an increased crystallinity percentage. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed the oxygen/carbon (O/C) atomic concentration ratio increased with increasing treatment time. The fiber weight loss percentage increased with increased treatment time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that partial etching of the fiber surface led to a higher surface roughness and area and that the Ar + O2 gas plasma treatment provided more surface etching than the Ar gas treatment because of the oxidation reaction of the O2 plasma. The mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced epoxy (FRE) matrix composites revealed that the F(tr)RE-Ar (30) samples showed a high tensile strength, whereas the mechanical properties of the F(tr)RE-Ar + O2 sample decreased with increased treatment time.

Abstract:Fibers of aspen chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP), spruce CTMP, bleached kraft pulp (BKP), and kraft pulp were treated by low-temperature plasma (air) aiming at the detection of the relationship between chemical components on the surface and the properties of sheets. The effects of plasma treatment were investigated by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The results show that the strength properties of sheets, especially the wet-tensile strength, were significantly improved, while optical properties were scarcely affected. Aspen and spruce CTMPs with abundant lignin and extractives were sensitive to plasma treatment in that the O/C ratio increased and lignin or extractive contents decreased. However, the crystallinity of BKP evidently decreased after plasma treatment owing to carbohydrate enrichment on the surface. Compared to the partial removal of noncarbohydrates through a laccase/mediator system, plasma treatment did not remove them in large amounts but created more carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, which improved the strength properties of paper sheets.
Surface properties of different natural precious decorative veneers by plasma modification

Abstract:Five kinds of typical natural precious decorative veneer rosewood, teak, black walnut, northeast China ash and red oak were treated by plasma at different discharge powers and speeds. The surface property changes of the treated and untreated wood were studied via contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The measurements showed that the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma could improve the surface wettability of all five kinds of natural precious decorative veneer, and improvement effects mainly depended on the discharge power and feeding speed. The SEM results showed that the DBD plasma gave remarkable etching on the decorative veneer surface and increased surface roughness. When the feeding speed decreased, the etching was heavier. The XPS results indicated that the carbon element content decreased, while the oxygen element increased. The O/C ratio concentration reached a balance with a higher discharge power, and many carboxyl groups were formed. It was found that the contact angle of teak decorative sliced veneer had the smallest drop and the element ratio of O/C decreased with DBD plasma treatment.

Abstract:The pre-treatment of wood surfaces using a radio-frequency (RF) discharge is attractive for various wood applications, mainly because of the high efficiency and low production cost of the process. The main advantage of this technique is that the bulk properties of the material remain unchanged while the surface properties are enhanced. Samples of wood pellets were exposed to a late afterglow RF plasma flow at atmospheric pressure. Experiments have shown that the argon plasma flow contains a number of long-lived active particles that can destroy the cellulose shell of the granules. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphological changes on the surface of the wood granules resulting from interaction with plasma. The optimal range of operating parameters is discussed, as well as the main active components involved in the processing process.

Effects of surface characteristics of wood on bonding performance of low-molar ratio urea–formaldehyde resin

Abstract:Low-molar ratio UF resin was used in bonding veneers of five wood species. Significantly different bonding strengths were observed among the used wood species. Much higher bonding strengths were found for cherry, sapele mahogany and black walnut, which would be attributed to their natural roughness that allows formation of more mechanical interlockings. After 60s Gliding Arc Discharge (GAD) plasma treatment of wood surface, the wet bonding performance was significantly improved for most of the wood species. The SEM images of wood surface indicated that the roughening, micrometer-scale peeling or etching effects of GAD plasma treatment would be related to the improved bonding performance. XPS characterizations showed that plasma treatment resulted in remarkable increase of O/C ratio for all wood species. Detailed analysis of C1s spectra revealed that drastic oxidation induced by plasma generated high content of oxygen-containing groups, while degradation led to exposure of more oxygen-containing components like cellulose and hemicellulose. In contrast to untreated surface, stronger interactions can be formed between highly polar wood surface and UF resin. GAD plasma appeared to be an efficient tool in both physical and chemical modifications of wood surface.

Abstract:This paper considers the effect of RF plasma on wood in improving the adhesion of binders to wood by increasing its surface wettability. Our study reveals that radiofrequency (RF) plasma treatment causes a greater than threefold decrease in the marginal wetting angle of wood. The greatest effect is achieved in RF plasma treatment in argon, which is on average 5% greater than that of RF plasma treatment in air or in propane/nitrogen mixture. In addition, the power of the RF plasma torch has the greatest influence, and the main influence comes from the voltage applied to the RF plasma torch; current does not have such a significant effect. To achieve a significant effect, the duration of exposure should be at least 5 min, with a total power of 4.05 kW. Studies have been conducted to determine the adhesive strength of wood. An increase in the strength of laminated beams made from RF-treated bars in relation to control samples was found. The greatest impact on the adhesion strength was revealed when using PVA-based glue, compared with the use of polyurethane-based adhesives and urea-formaldehyde resin.

Abstract:Plasma treatments for black spruce wood (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), a widespread forest species from Canada, were carried out in order to waterproof the exposed surfaces. Experiments were performed using inductively coupled argon plasma with carbon tetrafluoride as the gaseous precursor for plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition of functional fluoropolymer coatings on wood. Analysis of the wettability through water contact angle measurements showed water-repellent characteristics, with static contact angles up to 130° depending on plasma exposure time, CF4 concentration in the Ar/CF4 plasma, and plasma source-to-substrate distance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigations of plasma-treated wood surfaces confirmed the growth of a thin, fluorocarbon layer with fluorine atomic concentrations close to 50 % on highly hydrophobic wood surfaces. Estimation of the thickness of the coatings by stylus profilometry revealed that a minimum layer thickness of about 80 nm is required to obtain water repellant wood surfaces with minimum water uptake. This complete set of data indicates that fluorocarbon-containing plasmas represent a very promising approach for improving the durability of wood products in wet and humid conditions.

Abstract:Mechanical properties of plasma-irradiated and surface-coated wood plastic composites (WPCs) have been investigated in this paper. WPCs were developed by injection molding technique using wood fiber (WF) as reinforcement and polypropylene (PP) as matrix. The short, discontinuous WF was compounded with thermoplastic PP at varying weight fractions of 0 wt%, 25 wt% (WP25), and 50 wt% (WP50) to yield tensile test specimens in accordance with JIS K7139-A32 standards. Subsequently, plasma treatment was performed on the test-pieces, followed by surface coating by immersion in acrylic resin liquid containing homogeneously dispersed TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (CNF). The results indicate an increase in surface roughness after plasma irradiation, but surface coating of the specimens with acrylic paint and CNF decreased their surface roughness by ∼50% in comparison to the untreated specimens. Plasma treatment and surface coating also increased the tensile strength of neat PP, WP25 and WP50 specimens by 5.4–7.1%, 3.5–3.7% and 3.0–3.6%, respectively, whereas their fracture strains tended to decrease. Compared to the untreated specimens, the surface-coated specimens generally displayed higher tensile strength. This finding is a corroboration that the observed increase in strength is highly contingent on the adhesion between the specimen surface and the coating layer than on the improvement in surface roughness. Thus, it is inferable that surface coating could be of great importance in enhancing the mechanical performance of WPCs.

Abstract:Abstract As a green material, wood is widely used in building decoration, railway construction, and other fields. However, the wood itself has inherent defects of being easy to absorb water and deform, rot, and decrease in strength. The physical and mechanical strengths and stability of artificial fast-growing forest wood are even worse. As wood modification can improve the dimensional stability, durability, strength, and other properties of wood, it has been widely used. Chemical modification is the main method of wood modification. The development of nanotechnology has brought more possibilities for wood modification. Owing to the extensive literature available, this article summarizes the representative achievements of wood chemical modification and nanotechnology. The principle, production process, advantages, and disadvantages of various wood chemical modification methods were analyzed, compared, and evaluated. Finally, according to the application status of wood-modified materials, the problems existing in the current wood chemical modification methods and the application of nanotechnology, and the development trend in the future are analyzed.
