Abstract:To meet embedded multimedia applications, a media-enhanced and reconfigurable RISC microprocessor is designed. Media-enhanced extension, pipeline controlling strategy, bypassing unit and exception handling are studied. By parameterized and module design, the microprocessor can be configured easily. The RISC core is simulated in Xilinx X2CV3000 FPGA successfully and an MPEG-4 AAC decoder based on the microprocessor has been implemented. The result shows that the core can be conveniently integrated into SoC.

Abstract:A novel and two-staged ALU architecture is developed in this paper, based on analyzing the traditional ALU, according to mathematics principle of equivalent transformation transform the original instruction.Using adder as the second-stage, simplify the generation block, which is the first-stage.It can decrease the number of controllers and scale of the encoding circuit. As a result, the area and power expenditure have been improved.

Abstract:Features like ultra-dense structure and ultra-low power consumption of the quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) have made this nanotechnology a viable alternative to complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The arithmetic logic unit (ALU) is the fundamental and inseparable part of each processor. This paper presented a new reversible ALU which is made up of three Modified Fredkin (MF) gates and a novel coplanar reversible full adder relying on the HNG gate in QCA nanotechnology. This structure consists of 350 QCA cells are arranged in a 0.411 μm 2 area and is implemented using the coplanar clock-zone-based crossover. Also, this layout can execute 20 distinctive arithmetic and logic functions, and its outputs are produced in three clock cycles (12 clock phases). The QCA implementation of the proposed structure is simulated and evaluated by QCADesigner version 2.0.3. Simulation outcomes authenticate that the proposed QCA reversible ALU has a 60.62%, 38.47%, 27.08%, 20%, and 14.28% amelioration in QCA cost, area occupancy, cell count, latency, and quantum cost, respectively, compared to the prior best coplanar structure.

Abstract:Currently the hardware design of adder and multiplier is quite mature, the principle of which is to map addition or multiplication operations into a series of logic computations. While the various optimization approaches have reached their limits, and hardware divider cannot be achieved still. The ancient Chinese abacus operates based on pithy formula, fulfilling kinds of computations including division fast and accurately. Yet the essence of it is not fully exploited. In this study, the hardware adder in view of the principle of abacus algorithm and operation prototype has been designed, verified on FPGA and superior to existing adders that are fully optimized. This offers broad research space to further optimize hardware multiplier or even achieve hardware divider.

Abstract:The amount of occupied area and energy waste are among the salient indexes that are important in designing and implementing digital circuits. Hence, the inherent properties of the quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA), like ultra-dense structure and ultra-low power consumption, have made this nanotechnology a viable substitute for complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor technology. The arithmetic logic unit (ALU) is each processor's operational and inseparable component. In this paper, a novel reversible ALU is proposed, which comprises a double Feynman gate, two Fredkin gates, and a new coplanar reversible full adder based on the modified TSG in QCA nanotechnology. This structure is implemented by 247 QCA cells in a 0.332 μm 2 area, which uses the coplanar clock-zone-based crossover. This layout can perform 20 various arithmetic and logic operations, and its latency is nine clock phases. The proposed QCA layouts are evaluated and simulated by QCADesigner version 2.0.3. The simulation outcomes indicate that the proposed coplanar QCA ALU has a 14.28%, 40%, 48.54%, and 50.3% improvement in quantum cost, latency, cell count, and area occupancy, respectively, compared to the prior best coplanar architecture.

Abstract:The structure of a low-power 16 bit by 8 bit two's complement multiplier unit in the design of a DSP (digital signal processor) chip was proposed based on standard cell. The multiplier used modified Booth's algorithm to generate the partial products, a Wallace tree structure to achieve the high-speed partial products addition, and finally, a high speed carry lookahead adder to finish the carry propagation. The delay of the carry propagation plays a very important role in the whole delay of the multiplier. To solve this problem, the LRCF (left-to-right-carry-free) algorithm was applied to complete the MSB (most significant bits) result calculation partially parallel with the Wallace tree addition. The power consumption distribution within this multiplier was analyzed and some methods were applied to reduce the switching activity of the Wallace tree structure to reduce the power consumption. Based on the UMC 0.18 μm CMOS technology standard cell library, the reports of Design Power showed that the multiplier can achieve the speed of 2.80 ns, an average dynamic power dissipation of 0.089 mW/MHz at 1.62 V and 125°C.

Abstract:AbstractQuantum-dot cellular automata QCA is an emerging technology with the rapid development of low-power high-performance digital circuits. In order to reduce the wire crossings and the number of logic gates in QCA circuits, this paper proposes a full adder named Tile full adder based on a 3×3 grid module, a Tile bit-serial adder based on the new full adder and a Diverse Clock Tile bit serial adder DC Tile bit-serial adder based on the new full adder and a DC multiplier network. Based on previously mentioned circuit units an improved carry flow adder CFA named Tile CFA and two types of carry delay multiplier CDM named Tile CDM and DC Tile CDM DC Tile CDM with different sizes are presented. All of the proposed QCA circuits are designed and simulated with QCADesigner. Simulation results show that these circuit designs not only implement the logic functions correctly but also achieve a significant performance improvement. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Quantum Dot Cellular Automata (QCA) and reversible logic have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional CMOS technology, offering several advantages, such as ultra-dense structures and ultra-low-power consumption. Among the crucial components of processors, the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) has witnessed significant advancements in reversible computing, leading to energy-efficient and high-speed computing systems, particularly beneficial for Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications. Conventional ALUs, reliant on irreversible logic, encounter energy inefficiencies due to information loss during computations, resulting in increased power consumption. Moreover, they may face limitations in processing speed, impacting real-time processing capabilities, especially for complex DSP tasks involving intensive arithmetic and logic operations. In response to these challenges, a research paper presents a pioneering approach, proposing a novel reversible ALU design using QCA nanotechnology. The proposed design ingeniously incorporates Modified Fredkin (MF) gates, and a coplanar reversible full adder based on the HNG gate, skillfully leveraging the unique features of QCA nanotechnology to optimize the ALU's energy-efficient and high-speed performance for DSP applications. This revolutionary QCA reversible ALU comprises 330 QCA cells arranged in a compact 0.41 μm2 area, skillfully realized through the coplanar clock-zone-based crossover approach. Its core computational elements, the three MF gates, and the innovative coplanar reversible full adder empower the ALU to execute a remarkable array of 20 distinct arithmetic and logic operations, showcasing its versatility in handling diverse DSP tasks. The proposed structure undergoes extensive simulations utilizing QCADesigner version 2.0.3 to confirm its performance. The evaluation results manifest substantial improvements compared to previous designs, boasting a 30% reduction in area occupancy, a 20% decrement in cell count, a 10% reduction in latency, and a 10% decrease in quantum cost compared to the best-known previous structure. These compelling outcomes solidify the potential of the proposed reversible ALU as a transformative advancement in energy-efficient and high-speed computing for DSP applications.

Abstract:We present the design of a 32-bit ALU using multiple input floating gate MOSFETs. Using the reconfigurable surface potential applied on the device, Boolean logic operations such as addition, subtraction and sequence comparison can be performed in the feedforward path. We have built a feedback loop to guide the ALU to implement the error detection. Using TSMC 180 nm CMOS technology, the post layout simulation shows that the power dissipation of the proposed ALU varies from 0.0394 W to 0.207 W when the frequency varies from 0.5 GHz to 2 GHz. The computation delay in this design is less than 10 ns under 10 fF load. Compared to the same ALU built in static logic, the proposed one using multiple input floating gate logic has the advantages of energy saving and large tolerance in fan-out. Besides, introduced feedback loop does not bring large overhead to the ALU.

Abstract:A new implementation of a 16 bit self timed ALU for asynchronous processors is described based on DCVS. The design meets the low power,high performance requirements of embedded processors. The ALU performs very well, taking area, speed, power consumption and statistical distribution of the instruction set into consideration.

Abstract:Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is a candidate alternative technology for CMOS technology in VLSI circuits in the post-transistor era. QCA can be implemented in molecular and nanoscale structures. In VLSI circuits, the Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) is one of the most critical units, which is an optimal design with low latency is essential for better processing speed. In this paper, an ALU is designed based on the needs of the one-dimensional clock. The proposed ALU has only 1.5 clock cycles latency, supports 12 instructions, and uses 443 cells in three layers. In addition, all inputs and outputs are in the same layer to make connecting the proposed ALU to other blocks simpler. To achieve this latency and the one-dimensional clock capability, AND, OR, XOR gates are fully redesigned to work in the one-dimensional clock structure. The one-dimensional clock enables the design of the clock bed and QCABED separately. Besides the proposed ALU in this paper, design rules are also proposed for one-dimensional clock circuit designing. Proposed designs are confirmed by QCADesigner, a well-known QCA layout design, and verification tool. QCADesigner-E was used for power estimation.

Abstract:Quantum dot cellular automata (QCA) technology is considered as one of the most suitable replacements to reduce the CMOS-based digital circuit design problems at the nanoscale due to its tiny size, fast, latency and very low power consumption. One of the main components of microprocessors is the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and in other words, it acts as the heart of microprocessors. This paper presents a QCA technology-based reversible ALU unit using basic reversible blocks and a novel reversible block namely BS1 Block. The proposed block performs logic and arithmetic operations in the proposed scheme. The simulations of the proposed design are carried out by QCA Designer. According to the simulated results, the proposed structure has a 35%, 27% and 30% improvement in quantum cost, the number of cells and the occupied area in comparison to the previous conducted researches, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, a design constructing the Arithmetic Logic Unit(ALU) based on reversible logic gates as logic components is proposed. By using reversible logic gates instead of using traditional logic gates such as AND gates and OR gates, a reversible ALU whose function is the same as the traditional ALU is constructed. The presented reversible ALU reduces the information bits' use and loss by reusing the logic information bits logically and realizes the goal of lowering power consumption.

Abstract:Purpose In this research work, brief quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) concepts are discussed through arithmetic and logic units. This work is most useful for nanoelectronic applications, VLSI industry mainly depends on this type of fault-tolerant QCA based arithmetic logic unit (ALU) design. The ALU design is mainly depending on set instructions and rules; these are maintained through low-power ultra-functional tricks only possible with QCA-based reversible arithmetic and logic unit for nanoelectronics. The main objective of this investigation is to design an ultra-low power and ultra-high-speed ALU design with QCA technology. The following QCA method has been implemented through reversible logic. Design/methodology/approach QCA logic is the main and critical condition for realizing NANO-scale design that delivers considerably fast integrate module, effective performable computation and is less energy efficiency at the nano-scale (QCA). Processors need an ALU in order to process and calculate data. Fault-resistant ALU in QCA technology utilizing reverse logic is the primary objective of this study. There are now two sections, i.e. reversible ALU (RAU), logical (LAU) and arithmetical (RAU). Findings A reversible 2 × 1 multiplexer based on the Fredkin gate (FRG) was developed to allow users to choose between arithmetic and logical operations. QCA full adders are also implemented to improve arithmetic operations' performance. The ALU is built using reversible logic gates that are fault-tolerant. Originality/value In contrast to earlier research, the suggested reversible multilayered ALU with reversible QCA operation is imported. The 8- and 16-bit ALU, as well as logical unit functioning, is designed through fewer gates, constant inputs and outputs. This implementation is designed on the Mentor Graphics QCA tool and verifies all functionalities.

Abstract:Low power techniques are becoming more important as portable digital applications expand quickly and demand high speed and low power consumption. The ALU is the most crucial and essential component of a central processing unit, as well as numerous embedded systems and microprocessors. Designing a 32-bit ALU that combines an arithmetic unit and a logical unit is the task at hand. The logic unit will do logic operations AND, OR, XOR, and XNOR with the aid of the recommended CMOS technology, while the arithmetic unit will do the arithmetic operations addition, subtraction, increment, and buffering operation. The arithmetic unit is constructed using the 4x1 MUX, 2x1 MUX, and full adder, and the 4x1 MUX, required logic gates, and 4x1 MUX are employed to create the logical unit. Using Cadence Virtuoso Gpdk 180nm Technology, the results of the simulation of the 32-bit ALU, the ideal delay, and the Power were calculated.

Abstract:Based on the Virtex2-Pro ML310,it realized the dynamic reconfiguration of FPGA in ALU using Module-based partial reconfiguration.The experimental results show that the size of the file using normal method is 5.82 times to the file using partial reconfiguration,and the partial reconfiguration can realize the whole function of biggish time sequence system by using less hardware resource;the area of the ALU is decreased;the download speed and the utilization ratio of the board are also greatly improved.

Abstract:This paper proposed a feedback shift register structure which can be split, it is based on a research of operating characteristics about 70 kinds of cryptographic algorithms and the research shows that the “different operations similar structure” reconfigurable design is feasible. Under the configuration information, the proposed structure can implement the multiplication in finite field GF(2 n ), the multiply/divide linear feedback shift register and other operations. Finally, this paper did a logic synthesis based on 55nm CMOS standard-cell library and the results show that the proposed structure gets a hardware resource saving of nearly 32%, the average power consumption saving of nearly 55% without the critical delay increasing significantly. Therefore, the “different operations similar structure” reconfigurable design is a new design method and the proposed feedback shift register structure can be an important processing unit for coarse-grained reconfigurable cryptologic array.

Abstract:Gate diffusion input (GDI) is a new technology of digital circuit design for low power. Compared with traditional CMOS technology, GDI technology can reduce the power consumption, the propagation delay and the circuit area. This work uses the GDI technology to build a 16-bit arithmetic logic unit (ALU) to perform logic operations (AND, OR, NAND and XOR), and math operations (addition, subtraction, adding 1 and subtracting 1), and finally compares it with traditional CMOS circuits.
