Abstract:Capillary electrophoresis (CE) presents a promising possibility for analyzing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) due to its low reagent consumption, high analysis speed, and enhanced efficiency. Herein we review the employment of CE for analyzing the effective components in TCM and identifying TCM via a fingerprint. Furthermore, we discuss the application of state-of-the-art capillary electrophoresis modes for screening enzyme inhibitors and investigating the interactions between TCM and plasma proteins. The review concludes with recommendations for future studies and improvements in this field of research. The general development trend identified in this review indicates that the application of CE has significantly improved TCM assay performance.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) are generally mixtures of herbal plants or extracts which comprise hundreds of different constituents with widely difference in the content and physiochemical properties. In order to analyze bioactive compounds in TCMs and control the quality, a large number of analytical tools have been developed, among which capillary electrophoresis (CE) has become a powerful technique with increasing importance. Some formats of CE, including capillary zone electrophoresis, micellar electrokinetic chromatography, non-aqueous CE and capillary electrochromatography have been widely employed for the analysis of TCMs. The general characteristics of these formats are briefly described, and their applications to the analysis of TCMs during the past five years are summarized.

Abstract:This paper reviews the recent advances and the key strategies in capillary electrophoresis (CE) with electrochemical detection (ECD) for separating and detecting a variety of bioactive constituents in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs). The subjects covered include the separation modes for the CE analysis of the constituents in TCMs, the CE-ECD system, the sample preparations of TCMs, the ECD of TCMs, the applications of CE-ECD in the determination of various bioactive constituents in Chinese medicinal materials and their preparations, the identification and differentiation of TCMs by CE-ECD, and future prospects. It is expected that CE-ECD will become a powerful tool in the herbal medicinal fields and will lead to the creation of truly routine devices for TCM analysis.

Abstract:Capillary electrophoresis electrochemiluminescence has the potential to be a powerful analytical tool that combines the inherent properties with the powerful resolution of Capillary electrophoresis and the sensitivity and selectivity of Ru(bpy)32+ electrochemiluminescence detection in analytical chemistry and biologic analytical chemistry. A minimal sample pretreatment and small consuming reagent can avoid environmental pollution. The micro analytical technology possesses the advantages of short analysis time, high separation of ciency and simple experiment operation. In this paper, the micro analytical means were successfully applied to determine the amounts of alkaloids in real Chinese traditional medicine samples.

Abstract:As a high efficiency separation technique, capillary electrophoresis has been widely used in various fields of analytical science. This review discusses the applications of electrochemical detection systems combined with capillary electrophoresis in pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis. These detection methods mainly involve amperometric detection but also include conductivity detection and potentiometric detection. Its applications in the field are divided into six parts, including catechol compounds, thiols, amino acids and peptides, carbohydrates, general pharmaceuticals, and other related compounds. A relatively detailed discussion is described for each compound under the current studied. On this basis, we have suggested several conceivable directions for capillary electrophoresis with electrochemical detection in the future.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) have been widely used for the prevention and treatment of various diseases for thousands of years in China, due to their less side-effect, proven efficacy and low cost. But the complexity of the components is still a bottleneck for its modernization and globalization. This paper reviews recent developments in liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (including quadruple, ion traps, time-of-flight mass analyzers and hybrid instruments) and data processing techniques in the qualitative and quantitative analyses of TCMs. In addition, several hot topics in TCM research such as quality control, fingerprint, multi-component qualification and quantification, pharmacokinetics, and metabolomics are also discussed. Finally, future directions of LC/MS for research on complex systems, such as multiple ionization mass spectrometry strategy, multiple dimensions LC and nanospray LC are also discussed concisely.

Abstract:Chemomics, the methodology for the study of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) on the substance basis, and chromatographic fingerprinting, the crucial technology of quality evaluation of TCMs, are introduced. The applications of chromatography as well as some related techniques in the information acquisition of TCMs are summarized. Guided by chemomics, with the results of chromatography and multi-component quantification, this research mode is of great significance to the establishment of the quality evaluation system of TCMs.

Abstract:The modernization and the internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) bring both opportunities and challenges to analytical chemists.The investigation in this field calls for high-performance techniques with both high separation efficiency and the ability of structure identification,as a result of the complicacy of traditional Chinese medicine both in composition and pharmacology.Two advanced analytical tools,liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(LC-MS) and capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry(CE-MS),are most favorable to solve this problem.This review covered the applications of LC-MS and CE-MS in the analysis of traditional Chinese medicine,including the analysis of the chemical constituents,quality control,drug metabolism,pharmacokinetics and compatibility of medicines.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) with many unique functions for treating diseases have attracted the interest of people worldwide. They have been popularly utilized for therapy and health promotion in most Asian countries and even in many European and North American countries. However, it should be clearly noted that TCMs are mixtures with complicated composition usually containing hundreds, even thousands of chemically different constituents, and it is the multiple constituents that work synthetically to determine the ultimate effect of a formula of TCM. Meanwhile, some components with toxicity in some TCMs, having various negative effects on different parts of body, may do serious harm to people’s health; such harm in particular requires our attention. In this article, applications of different chromatographic and electrophoretic techniques in the analysis of toxic components in TCMs in recent decades have been comprehensively reviewed and some hyphenated procedures (combinations of two kinds of measurement) applied in this field are also summarized.

Abstract:As a novel micro-separation technique, capillary electrochromatography (CEC) has the merits of high efficiency, high selectivity, high resolution and rapid analysis. However, the small-volume injection manipulated in capillary dimensions poses a great challenge for detectors in achieving high sensitivity. Currently, one of the major researches into CEC involves the development of some sensitive detection modes. The general introduction, which includes the historical perspectives and the principles of CEC, is briefly described. The recent advances about CEC coupled with various detectors and its applications in the separation of complex samples are summarized. A total of 141 references are reviewed.

Abstract:So far, the potential of capillary electrophoresis in the application fields has been increasingly excavated due to the advantages of simple operation, short analysis time, high-resolution, less sample consumption, and low cost. This review examines the implementations and advancements of capillary electrophoresis in different application fields (environmental, pharmaceutical, clinical, and food analysis) covering the literature from 2019 to 2021. In addition, ultrasmall sample injection volume (nanoliter range) and short optical path lead to relatively low concentration sensitivity of the most frequently used ultraviolet-absorption spectrophotometric detection, so the pretreatment technology being developed has been gradually utilized to overcome this problem. Despite the review being focused on the development of capillary electrophoresis in the fields of environmental, pharmaceutical, clinical, and food analysis, the new sample pretreatment techniques of microextraction and enrichment fit excellently to capillary electrophoresis in recent three years are also described briefly.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have been used for preventative care for thousands of years. The active components are the basis for the pharmacodynamics of TCMs, and they can be an important source of lead compounds. As a bioaffinity chromatography technique, cell membrane chromatography (CMC) has been developed for almost 20 years since 1996. It has been proven to be a useful method for studying drug-receptor interactions and screening active components from medicinal herbs. In our review in 2007 (Drug Discov. Ther., 1 (2007) 104-107), the preparation, identification, evaluation, and preliminary applications of CMC stationary phases were presented. In this article, we briefly review some of the latest progress and applications about CMC including instrument development, research on drug-receptor interactions, screening active components from TCMs, and quality control of TCMs.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) are getting more and more popular nowadays in the whole world for improving health condition of human beings as well as preventing and healing diseases. TCM is a multi-component system with components mostly unknown, and only a few compounds are responsible for the pharmaceutical and/or toxic effects. The large numbers of other components in the TCM make the screening and analysis of the bioactive components extremely difficult. So, separation and analysis of the desired chemical components in TCM are very important subjects for modernization research of TCM. Thus, many novel separation techniques with significant advantages over conventional methods were introduced and applied to separation and analysis of the chemical constituents in TCM. This review presents just a brief outline of the applications of different separation methods for the isolation and analysis of TCM constituents.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a complex system, containing hundreds of components. The chemical profiling of TCMs is an important task and still facing great challenges. In recent years, the on-line two-dimensional liquid-chromatography (2D-LC) methods, emerging and powerful separation techniques, offer new possibilities for the global analysis of complex TCM samples. Recent advances of 2D-LC, including heart-cutting two-dimensional liquid-chromatography (heart-cutting LC-LC) and comprehensive two-dimensional liquid-chromatography (comprehensive LC x LC), applied to TCMs analysis are reviewed. Design and application of 2D-LC combined with turbulent flow chromatography (TFC) or cell membrane chromatography (CMC) applied for TCM bioactive components screening are described.

Abstract:Capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (CE-MS), developed on the basis of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, is a new hyphenated technique that combines the advantages like high separation efficiency, short analytical time, low sample consumption in CE and the high sensitivity, powerful molecular structure elucidation in MS.It has been paid great attention by analytical scientists and become a powerful tool for analysis of active components in Chinese medicine, in vivo drugs and bio-samples like amino acids, peptides, proteins and polysaccharides.In this paper, a brief review was given on recent advance in CE-MS and its applications, including advance in sheath-flow and sheathless nano-spray interfaces and applications in analysis of pharmaceutical and biological samples.The first part of this review summarizes the development of stable and efficient interfaces to improve the feasibility of CE-MS technique.Several interfaces like coaxial sheath-flow, electrokinetic sheath-flow, liquid injection and sheathless interface with etching emitter have been reviewed.The second part introduces the application of CE-MS in the past few years.The applications are categorized according to the types of analytes, including the analysis for active components in Chinese medicines, in vivo drugs, amino acids, peptides, proteins and carbohydrates.Coatings for capillary inner wall, online processing strategies, sample preparation methods and other experiment methods have been discussed in each category.In the last part of this review, a perspective of this technique has been discussed.
